Soggy Doggy
Brady the "Pool Dog" reminds me of so many obsessive cases I've handled. His behavior probably seemed funny or cute when it first appeared, but as silly as it may have looked, for Brady and other obsessive dogs, the situation wasn't funny at all. Dogs who become obsessive are usually frustrated and bored, then one day they find something that attracts them, leading them to download all that pent-up energy into that one object or activity. Wham! Suddenly, it's all they can think about. It becomes a very unhealthy way to release tension, sort of like negative human addictions like drugs, alcohol, food, or gambling.
A dog can become obsessive over practically anything--a Frisbee, chasing a skateboard or the cat, chewing a stuffed toy or your best Manolo Blahniks--even your dentures! The most dangerous thing about obsessive behavior is that his mind doesn't recognize limits. An obsessive dog will pursue his fixation regardless of pain, hunger, or other dangerous signals. So if your dog's charming little habit is beginning to get out of control, consult a professional. It may look funny, but trust me; your dog isn't having fun.

This is 100% true. I made that mistake with my first dog (a beagle). And traditional obedience training didn't help the situation.
Cesar, your show has helped us tremendously to be better pack leaders with the dog we got after our first one passed on. I look forward to learning more from you in 2006! (P.S. I am always very impressed with how brave you are. How do you stay so calm when you know they might bite you?)
My dog seems too excited to see us whenever we go back home. How does one remedy this problem?
My boxer will not stop licking everything she sees, touches, smells, and hears. It gets embarrassing when company drops by. Her previous owner left her at the vet and never came back. We have had her for over 1 year. Could this possibly be abandonment issues? Thank you!
My carin terrier becomes a monster, biting everything in sight and constantly barking when he sees another animal or person. He has my window sills and panes all chewed. He is two years old and is very good and lovable, but this problem is driving me crazy. I have tried everything and nothing has worked. My carin needs help and I need help. PLEASE HELP!!! Barb Angelo & Tucker
My dog has many obsessive behaviors; some are bizarre. I consulted one obedience instructor about one habit that is dangerous. His response was what I expected. The problem is my nine month old American Bulldog, Chloe swallows socks whole and digests them (thank God they pass through). I don't understand this behavior and do my best to keep them out of her reach. She will even open my dresser drawer if it is left open an inch to dig around. She was blind the first three months of her life; experts told me to return her to the breeder. Of course they would not take her back; I didn't want to give her back to them anyway. I knew they would simply shoot her, she was of no use to her. Her eyesight did develop (which is rare).
She is very strong-willed to say the least. Dealing with her on a daily basis is exhausting. When she was four months old, she would go nuts biting me when I tried to make her behave. I thought she outgrew this. We just had an episode while I was walking her today.
I have socialized her from an early age and bring her to the local dog park. She has a lot of fun. Once she stole a frisbee and didn't want to give it up. She tried to bite me when I was trying to retrieve it for the owner.
Seems we make a few steps forward and take two back.
Chloe cried a lot a night when she we first got her. My daughter was having finals, so in order to allow her to sleep I would get up and hold the dog in my recliner. She still thinks she is a lap dog. She leaps in my lap every chance she gets. She is very friendly with dog owners at the dog park. She jumps in their laps too. She weighs at least 85 pounds and is still growing.
I hope to learn from this show and website. She has the potential to be a good dog. Wish I were in Southern California so I could submit her for the show.
Mr. Millan:
I walk my Bischon Frise only a couple of times a week but I do play with him a lot inside the house to keep him active trying to tire him out. For example, I have a hallway that I roll a ball down and he chases it and brings it back to me. After running back and forth about 10 minutes, he is tired. But every time I have to leave him at home by himself, he barks, whines, cries, and scratches at my door (all of which is excessively loud). When I go to work, he carries on for about 8 hours at times. He won't stop until I come home. I live in an apartment building that has 3 floors in it, plus a basement. I live on the 2nd floor and I can hear him all the way down into the basement. I have been getting dirty looks from my neighbors and I am afraid I will be evicted if he continues to carry on like he has been. Other than this behavior, he is a pretty well behaved dog. He is 1 1/2 years old and has been neutered. He is the small size Bischon.
I know I must be doing something wrong. How can I help my little guy feel comfortable with being by himself? Is he still not getting enough exercise?
Cesar,
First off, I wanted to tell you that your AWESOME. My husband and I can't get enough of your show; it's very entertaining and educational.
We have a 7-month year old lab. He's a smart, magnificent dog but -- there is always a but -- he's defintely a chewer and a biter. He chews on what ever he can get his paws on. So we end up giving him 24" bones so he could keep himself occupied.
I realize after you said it becomes more of an obsession, we probably should correct the problem instead of feeding it. We just don't know how. So, how do you get him to stop chewing on things and biting on hands?
Mr. Millan,
I have four mini dachshunds, 2 female & 2 male. The females are fixed but the males are not. Our first dachshund to come into the home is Scooter. He was a pup, as were all our "kids," when we first acquired them. A year later we got Sassi. Scooter tried to mate with her, but we realized that it would not be a good match and had Sassi fixed. One year later, we acquired Cricket. As she got older, she established her dominance over the pack. When Cricket turned 3 years old, we let her and Scooter mate and kept the male of the litter, Bowdy.
Bowdy turned one-year-old and now both boys will pee on corners of the furniture and other places in the house and that is my problem. With both females fixed, is there any way to stop them from marking after each other in the house? They will also do this in the yard, but outside is ok.
Please, please do a show on potty training!!! My little shepherd/bulldog mix needs all the help she can get.
I love the Dog Whisperer show. I have started using some of the tips on my border collie-mix (don't know what the mix is). He eats everything before I can grab them out of his mouth and we have to watch him like a 2-year-old child. We have dog-proofed the house as much as possible. I have started walking Buster like Cesar talks about on the show. This is helping.
Hi Cesar,
I've really enjoyed watching last seasons' shows. I've used your ideas to retrain my dog and myself. Our golden retriever/lab mix is 2-years old. When we got her at 2-months-old, she had a large scar running down her back around her tail and partway down her back leg. The breeder told us that she had no idea what happened to her. A few months later we realized that she is afraid of people. She is fine with us, but she is scared of other people. I took her to puppy training where she did very well (she ignored the people). The teacher told us to wait for her to grow out of it, which she has not done. Currently, we put her in her cage when people first arrive and then put her on a leash and "walk" her, keeping her with us until she calms down. After around 1/2 an hour we can remove the leash and she will stay with us. She will even sneak up behind people and smell them, but if any one looks at her or reaches out to pet her she barks and runs away. Should we just give up and know that she will be a scaredy cat for the rest of her life or is there anything we can do? I really think she wants people to touch her -- why else would she sneak up behind them to smell them?
I just watched your show the other night and was amazed at what you do. I have a 5 1/2 month old pit-bull which I found when he was 4 weeks old. He is good most of the time but is very strong-willed when it comes to being submissive, but I do not give in. Last week out of nowhere he has become terrified of skate boards and wheels. I don't know why this has happened, but now he shakes so badly he can't move or pass them. It didn't bother him before last week. I make him sit when they come but I do not comfort him, I have the skate board beside him so he can sniff it, but as soon as someone steps on it he shakes and tries to bolt the other way. I live in NYC so I can't go a block without a skateboard passing me. Walking him has become a challange. Even with the gentle leader, he will fight it. I just don't know what else to do to get him over his fear. He is such a wonderful pup with people and other dogs and cats.
I really appreciate the show Dog Whisperer. We record every episode and watch them. I have learned a lot about being an assertive pack leader. The only problem with my little yorkie, Pucchini is that he is obssesive about water. I don't really know what to do since I can't stop giving water all together. Anytime I put water down, he gets excited and drinks all the water every time. I have started to make him sit and stay when I put down water, trying to get him to calm down before he drinks. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I have a 2-year-old female boxer who has a major problem with being alone. I've tried to leave her for a couple minutes at a time. She has used my bed as her restroom (she has never had a problem potty training) she has busted though my back door she bark and whines non-stop. I have to take her with me everywhere I go lately and she has started to go to the bathroom in my truck, which she had never done. She spent the first year and a half in the truck and never went to bathroom in there. Any ideas?
Are you crating your dog? I am a boxer rescue volunteer. I have experience with separation anxiety in female boxers. You should crate her when you have to leave her alone. I think like Cesar prescribes you should often take her on long walks with a leash. Get that energy out of her.
Cesar,
I just want to say how happy I am to see a new season of The Dog Whisperer coming in January. You have a tremendous gift and I have learned so much from you. It's wonderful to watch you help so many dogs and their owners to lead happier lives. God bless you.
The Dog Whisperer was recently introduced to me from a friend, and I watched my first episode yesterday. I'm very much impressed and can't wait to watch another episode, as one technique can be used for many other issues. I'm hoping to learn more about what I can do for my 5-year-old Shih Tzu, Millie, that is terrified of other dogs (large and small). I recently learned it might be because we have held her every time she was around a bigger dog, which is true. We were afraid of her being attacked so we would pick her up. Ugh. Now how do we go about fixing this problem? We recently had a 6-week-old Shih Tzu puppy, Penni, staying at our house temporarily. For 7 weeks, Millie never got use to Penni. Millie spent 7 weeks on the back of a couch out of reach of Penni. Millie is NOT afraid of any other animal and especially loves our ferret.
My dog Molly, constantly "scoots" around the house and outside. She also,at times, licks the area where she scooted. Her anal glands were expressed by the vet, but she scooted again when the vet was finished. She has allergies - could that have something to do with it?
I love your show and have watched every episode. I have a 2-year-old Jack Russell that continually pulls when we walk. I have tried your advice when it comes to walking, but she is so stubborn. By the time we are done walking, my right arm is aching so badly that I get spasms at night and for days. Help! I love walking her, but my arm is always hurting.
Cesar,
Thanks for doing this show. Like many people, I'm dealing with an ultra-stubborn, and pretty neurotic, obsessive dog. He's a plott hound and as hounds go and definitely one of the most stubborn ones, since they are bred for their tenacity.
Because we live in New York City, the only place to exercise him is the park by us. He doesn't go off-leash since his natural tendency is to go smelling and hunting.
I have used some of your methods, especially about showing him that i am the dominant one when we go out. I have to say that I have had days of success and days of failure. He's the ultimate sweetheart, but it doesn't matter how much exercise I give him, he's still crazy on the main avenue where we live and when people come to our apartment.
Still, I thoroughly enjoy your shows and it has definitely given us hope that our 5-year-old plott hound's future can still be filled with hope and promises. Keep up the good work with the shows! Maybe you can do some episodes in NYC???
Having grown up with dogs, I have a fairly good understanding of how dogs interact with people and how the pack dynamic plays out, but I get the feeling that most people just have no idea how dogs think. Your show is helping to educate dog owners about simple dog behaviour, which is fantastic. So kudos to you, Cesar. A great show and a wonderful social service.
Anyway, I have a great dog who is extremely sweet and well behaved, except when there's a cat around. Or even the thought of a cat. She remembers every place in the neighborhood where she's seen a cat and is eager to return to those places. When she sees a cat, it's like her brain switches to a different place, a place of total obsession. She becomes frantic and shaky, her heartbeat goes crazy and she stops paying attention to me. After months of work she'll listen enough to sit, but I have to drag her away from the cat (and I mean DRAG). It usually takes her many minutes to return to a semi-normal state of mind no matter how I try to reset her.
What makes this interesting is that a friend has a cat who isn't afraid of my dog. After some initial getting to know each other, they seem to get along. The cat will play with the dog and let my dog lick him and chew on him. My dog is excited, but controllable, not shivery and panting. The only thing I can think is that the cat has established boundaries about how much he'll put up with from my dog. Or maybe because the cat doesn't put up the normal fear responses my dog doesn't get triggered. Dunno.
I am a trainer who specializes in crate and housebreaking and my husband specializes in obedience and aggressive behavior. It may seem easy, but like Cesar says, you need to establish yourself as a pack leader and show an alpha role before you start any type of obedience training. I have learned much from him, as well as integrated some techniques into what I already use. It's basically common sense, but it takes someone else to tell us for it to sink in -- kind of like teenagers.
I have many satisfied customers and it makes me very happy to send knowledge off with someone who can teach someone else! Share the knowledge and you share the world!
Nyeah... Let's see what you can do with a cat.
I have a deaf dog and would love to see a show in which Cesar deals with a deaf dog.
Cesar~
I'm so glad your going to have another season! I have been involved with dogs for over 30 years and finally someone who truly understands dogs and their unique behaviors gets some national airtime.
I have owned many kinds of dogs: Beagles, Doberman Pinchers, German Shepherds, Airedale Terriers and good old mutts. I showed dogs in comfirmation and in obedience. My two grown daughters were raised with dogs and both of them learned to walk with a doberman under each arm.
I believe that there are no bad dogs, just bad owners or owners who don't take the time to learn about what they are getting into when they decide to own a dog. I don't think people spend enough time educating themselves about owning a dog, and don't spend enough time researching what type of dog is best for their lifestyle. They give more time into choosing their next pair of shoes. They certainly wouldn't buy a pair of shoes unless they fit right, but will get a dog because it's in fashion.
Owning a dog is a lifetime commitment, for the lifespan of the dog. I wish more people understood that and I wish they didn't treat dogs as disposal property. If they think that, then they should get a fish.
Watching your show reminds me of John Lyons who trains horses; you could call him the horse whisperer. I attended his seminars several times and found his approach to horse training really inspirational. I hope that you will consider doing some dog training seminars around the country. So many people and their dogs would benefit from your knowledge, your widsom and your commen sense.
Here's to your continued success and to many more seasons on TV!
Happy New Year!
~Sara
Hi!
I have a Pomerainian and she has an extremly annoying barking problem. I have tried everything to control her barking. She totally freaks out when I grab my coat or walk near the door and getting her to stop barking or crying in the car is even worse. Misty is almost 2-years-old now. It is deafening to some! I am deaf and I can hear her even without a hearing aid on. I tried that finger snap technique you mentioned and it does NOT seem to work on her. Any way I can control this ?
Cesar,
Thank you for all your insight! We are anxious to get our first dog once our house it finished being built. We are adopting an older dog, from the shelter and a puppy. You have given us so much insight already and we don't even have a dog yet! I will certainly follow your advice about when you adopt a dog from a shelter, the best thing you can do is take him for a long walk before bringing him home. Otherwise, he is going from one shelter to "another." You are helping us to start on the right foot... or should I say paw? Thanks!
P.S. Love your show!

My husband and I have a black lab who is 2-years-old. She is absolutely obsessed with humping our pit bull and our 9-year old-boxer (both female and spayed). Needless to say, it has become bothersome to both other dogs. We have tried to redirect her to no avail. Then we started watching your show and became better pack leaders for her and now it's rare that her obsession even surfaces. Thank you and bless you Cesar and your family this new year! (We are currently fostering a rescue pit bull, Bogey, who says your pack is beautiful!) Happy Holidays!
Dear Cesar,
I love your shows and I have seen all of them. They taught me a lot. I can't wait until January 6th. I have 3 beautiful mutts, two of them don't like each other and fight. I have been keeping them separate since last May. They used to be friends before I found Sparky, my third dog, who was not spayed then and went into heat. That triggered the fights, which cost me around $2000 in surgeries. I love my dogs and am not giving any of them away. Is there any help in having them live in peace again?
Cesar,
I am really enjoying the show. I have a troubled dog named Elvis. I rescued him when he was about 5 to 6 -weeks-old. I heard that his mother is part-hybred while his father is not. I discovered very quickly that he was born with a congenital heart defect and a constricted esophagus. The vet said that he needed to have heart surgery or he would not survive. He was 5 pounds. He needed to be at least 20 pounds to have the surgery. Because of his esophagus problem I had to hold him upright like he was standing on his hind legs and spoon feed him a mixture of pureed food. I did this 4 times a day and at three months he was ready to have the surgery. He was 27 pounds.
At 6-months of age, he was neutered. At about 7-months of age, he began to display aggression problems. He is dog aggressive and although not as aggressive with other people, he is not friendly with people either. He is terrified to go to the vet, and just today due to his fear he lost control of his bladder while the vet was removing stitches. I have taken him to see a behaviorist and I am clicker training him. I am reading books about training and aggression problems and of course whatching your show.
I am glad that you will have a book available in April. I will be getting it. I hope that I can get him past his fears because if I can't fix this problem, I have been told that I will have to "put him down." That will break my heart. Wish me luck.
This show came to my attention the same week I adopted a one-year-old golden retriever out of the local shelter. I have used the dog walking and other techniques I have learned from watching Mr. Millan and it has made all the difference in the world. I love the way he never yells, hits, or gets frustrated. One short sharp yank on the choke chain and a firm hiss gets my dogs attention everytime. I now have her walking respectfully at my side instead of jerking me down the road. I am looking forward to many years to spend with my new friend in a respectful partnership. Thanks Cesar!!!
Cesar,
I love all the episodes and try to learn something everytime. I have dogs and would like to get another one, but they all become runners even when they are walked frequently or are let out in a fenced-in yard. I feel like they just want to run away all the time. I worry that they will be hurt or be bothersome to neighbors or cause an accident. I hope to see something related to this problem on your show. Thanks.
The two things that seem to have made the best impression on my terrier-mix (shelter rescue) puppy has been the "shhhs" sound (just like a mommy dog will make) and placing the pup in submission. He barked constantly at our 3 cats until I learned the shhs and the submission techniques from this show. The results are almost immediate. Now he's a good pup.

I HAVE A CHOCOLATE LAB AND SHE CRIES A LOT. SHE HAS BEEN DOING THIS FOR WEEKS. SHE ONLY CRIES FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES, BUT CONSTANTLY. SHE GOES FOR A WALK EVERYDAY FOR AT LEAST 45 MIN. SHE ONLY 1-YR-OLD.
PS. SHE GETS LOTS OF ATTENTION-------- LOVE THE SHOW

Cesar,
I have been watching your show lately, and I cannot believe the difference you make with these dogs. I am going to get a dog soon (which will be my first dog ever) and I will be watching your show every Friday night for more advice. I want to make sure everything goes perfectly with my new dog because I will be paying for it with my own money that I have been earning for a year now. I have learned so much and can't wait for the new season. Thanks!
~Chantel
I just started watching the show, and am amazed at the results! Two weeks ago I got a 6-week-old chocolate bab, Australian shepherd-mix puppy. He's now 8-weeks-old. The housebreaking is going pretty well, but to try to get him to walk outside of the yard is proving difficult. The first week he followed me everywhere. Now he's fighting the leash, and I'm half-dragging, half-coaxing him to walk. I drive a truck, and he rides with me everyday in his open-door kennel, so he needs to walk! I play and run with him several times during the work day, and he's fine. Any advice would help! I'm also getting the nipping under control. Happy New Year!
Dear Cesar
Our family (seven kids) owns two German Shepherds a 3 yr old male, and a 6 mos old female. They are relatively well behaved and don't have any significant problems (outside of normal puppy stuff in the 6 mos old), EXCEPT that the grown male goes insane when something like a flashlight is turned on.... and digs fiercely at the floor and barks as though there's an enemy underneath it.
This is clearly our own fault, for when he was a pup, we thought it was cute to have him chase a laser pen light, and ended up getting him to pull up the linoleum in the kitchen for us so we could replace it with tile by pointing the laser where we needed it up. We then discovered he could rototil a garden area with the same method. He did a great job -- he's a hard worker -- but now he is a menace to flooring when ANY light beams present themselves. He chases shadows and reflections now, too. He is 120 pounds and has run through windows, although he's learning not to. Can we undo the damage?
Thanks!
Virginia
hi
i just started watching your show, and i hope to be able to learn from it . i have i have a sheltie name angel she is almost 5 yrs. i have three promblen, 1 when i take her for a walk she is fine for about maybe 5 or 10 seconds, and then she sit down, this will go on till we get home , i will start walking and then she will walk and then sit down again , is there anything i can do to get her to keep walking , it is only around the block. also her barking . she is not bad in the house except when she wants me to let her out and then she can drive you up the wall , and yes she is spoil rotten .also getting her to come when there is other animals outside . she is fine in the house , i only use her name when i want her to come.and how to make her lay down and stay there ,
I love your show. I watch it everytime I can. I have used several of your techniques on my three dauschunds and it is amazing how much control I have over them now. I am working with my son's two dogs now on walking and not jumping up on people. They too are improving. You are a blessing to watch. Keep up the good work. I am from Alabama and wish someone like you were here to help us! Are you mentoring anyone out this way?
I love the show and Cesar is wonderful. I learn so much from each experience. Maybe someone can give me some advise on my problem pup.
I have three dogs and a cat. A mini Schnauzer, a mini Daschound and a Westie. The Schnauzer and Doxie are the oldest and got along great. When we got the kitten the Schnauzer was very motherly and even let the cat "suckle" on her chest and kneed her like she would her mother. With the Westie she loves having someone to race with and wrestle as the doxie does not like to be roughed up.
But recently Schnapps has become very jealous of our attention and will attack the others if they try to greet us or a visitor before she has had the time and calmed down. She has become a bully at times to her flock instead of their shepherd. she has also always had a problem when someone comes to the door. Barking and jumping for a long time. We cannot stop her unless we remove her from the room. She also barks at people she sees in the neighborhood or when in the car. What could have triggered this change?
I saw the show for the first time last night and plan to be a regular viewer for the next season.
I would like to see some tips on "potty training" and also introducing a new pup to an established "pack". I have a seven year old yorkie, a five year old yorkie, and recently brought home a 16 week old yorkie pup. All are females and while the seven year old seems to be taking things in stride, the five year old is having a difficult time with the newcomer.
I love the show and Grandfather's advice is right on target! You certainly have a gift.
my 4 year old shih tzu teacup poodle mix wont stop peeing all over the house i walk him and five minutes later hes going to the bathroom in the house can you help me please?
My standard male poodle visits dog parks regularly and constantly is chasing the dogs around and nipping at their back feet and heels. Some of the dogs respond to him like he just nawed their leg off and others just run from him. We were asked to leave today. How do I get him to stop chasing every dog and bitting at thier feet and heels?
We have a Chi who's 5yr's old, he's a house dog who loves to sit on grandmas lap all day if it's allowed, the problem is that when someone hands her anything he goes nuts and barks and snaps until she puts her hand on his head and tells him to stop. He sleeps with grandpa at night and if anyone walks into the room while he there, it the same reaction. Barking and snapping until you leave!
Any ideas on how to stop this and get him to know it's ok to touch grandma and come into grandpa's room??
Dear Cesar, I have a 7 month old German Shepherd and could not for the life of me figure out what I was doing wrong with him because he was listening to my husband and not me. He wouldn't even let me pet him without him trying to bite my hands. He thought that I was his toy. Our walks were disastrous. He walked me and pulled me and I would end up with a sore shoulder and hip from trying to pull back. He weighs 87 lbs. so he's not small for being a pup.
I have been watching your show (it's wonderful) and finally figured out that he thought that he was my alpha leader. I have been walking him everyday since he was 6weeks old(we don't have a fenced in yard) and never realized that I didn't have control of him at all.
Your techniques with the way you walk dogs has helped immensely. As long as I keep the collar right behind his ears, high on his neck he can't seem to hang his head down and pull. When we walk he now walks beside me and we walk for about 45 minutes 3 or 4 times a day. He "smells" the grass when I say it's ok. It's on my terms now and he seems to be responding well. He still tries to take over once in a while but I remind him of the "pack" rules.
Thank you so much for being a "dog" life saver. I will be a fan of your forever! Patti N.
Cesar,
We are very interested in knowing if you have any books published on raising puppies? Congratulations on a great first season!! We look forward to this next season and look forward to poosible episodes on raising puppies.
Cesar,
Our family looks for your show listings when we plan what to watch every week. There aren't too many programs that can grab the interest of every member of my family...hats off to you,Mr Milan!
I have been around animals all of my life, and admire and respect the surety with which you handle dogs. We adopted a very sick puppy from a terrible situation 5 months ago, and now I am wondering if I lost my mind. Jorja is a 7 month old pit bull/lab mix who has cost us nearly $2,000.00 in vet bills trying to get healthy after being rescued from a jockey-lot kennel. She was so sick that indoors was the only option for caring for her at first, and now my husband resists putting her outside. Because she is already huge, naturally wired, and hardheaded, she has destroyed my house. I have used several of your techniques in getting to the 'head of the pack' and insisting that she submit to me and be patient for food...now if I can just get the realization across to my husband that she will be happier when everyone admits she's a dog!!
We are so pleased that you will have a new season starting in January. We enjoy your show, and we enjoy the attitude of serenity you bring to it. Thank you for sharing with Joe Public bits of yourself and your family!
we have a 10 year old male boxer. had since 8 weeks old. very trained extremely intelligent. very obedient. we aqured a 2 yrar old female and bred them. we kept a large puppy, so that now we have this nice family. the problem lies in the male puppy, oscar, he is now 3. we live in the country and i trained my dogs to be aggressive towards strangers and other animals that wander up. the mother, eve, and son have a close bond. thet play fight as most boxers do. the father, buster, loves to be frisky. sometimes the father and son get so aggressive in their boxing the larger oscar ends up on top of poor buster with his ear in his mouth. well we walk them together and make each one lay down while the other smells them but we still have instances where they end up locked together in this death grip kind of stalemate. some times i have to choke oscar until he would passout and let go of buster's head. once oscar lunged and bit me in the forearm as i grabbed up buster when they were getting to aggressive. i grabbed buster to remove him and oscar lunged in to bite buster but iturned and got it. it was too late for oscar to stop the assault. we're at the point of having to muzzle the dogs so we know they're not going to fight. they sleep in the living room of our house while eve sleeps with me and the wife in the bedroom. in the mornings they awake and lick each other and kind of spar a little before going outside. no problem. it's always in the evening after me and the wife get home that these instances happen. we sure woulds appreciate ant help. i need for them to be aggressive just not towardss each other.
Dear Cesar
My husband and I have 4 dogs, nikki a female skipperkee 20 yrs., lucy chihuahua jackrussell mix about 4 yrs we found her by a dumpster as a puppy, bear a pitbull puppy 18 weeks old and chico chihuahua puppy 18 weeks old the 2 puppy are only a day apart. all very unique and all very storng minded dogs. The one thing that they have in common is; they love affection and want it all the time and they suffer from separation anxiaty. the two male puppys love to play but the female dogs dont want to play and I'm affraid to let them play together because the difrence in their size. they have only seen each other a few time while i was holding chico and walk by bear. we find ourself issolating bear the pit bull from the other dogs and it breaks my heart bear is just a gentle giant. i'm also having a hard time potty training chico. i think because theirs an other male in the house the chihuahua wants to makesure he claims his place. I would love for my dogs to be in harmony with each other.
I have a mini pin and she seems to be getting more neurotic everyday. I don't even know where to begin.
Her biggest problem is that when anyone tries to go out the door she barks and bites at their ankels. She wants to go. I wear dentures and she knows that when my teeth are in that I am going somewhere and she goes beserk, barking, trying to get her leash down. Needless to say when you get her leash she tries to get it on herself and will grab the end to walk herself. In the car she sits on my shoulder and has her head out the window. She knows when we arrive at the park and the barking begins again. Now...if I try to get out of the car(or my daughter) even to pump gas she goes ballistic, trying to nip at us and then stops when we get back in the car.
There's more but I would end up writing a book. I live on a very limited income and obedience classes are a little to steep for me.If there is anyone out there who can help...PLEASE...I am at my wits end. Her name is Thunder and I love her very much. My boyfriend and I got here a month before he died and she is so very special to me. She is a very loving dog when she's not being all crazy.
Thank you for listening and everyone have a great New Year!
Dear Cesar
I have 3 Lhasa Apso's one male and two females. The Male (Pudgers is 5 years old) barks nonstop during storms. Which means no matter what time of the day or night, I have to get up and stay up to quiet Pudgers down so he doesn't wake every one in the house. Currently I have found, picking him up and holding him stops all barking. Just putting my hand on him will lower the barking but there is still lots of growling. My females remain quite and may only bark once or twice during a storm but the male barks from the time he can hear the thunder until the storm has long past. How can I quiet him down and still get some sleep.
Eva
All I can say is WOW!! I am so impressed with Cesar and his way with dogs. We had a pitbull/shepard mix for 11 years and just recently had to put him to sleep due to cancer. It tore me up so bad I had to go right out and get another furry friend. We now have a 5 month old German Shepherd that we rescued from the shelter. She is an awesome dog, and I have been watching the dog whisperer and using ideas I learn from the show to make her and even better dog. Thanks for making the show and letting the world see your talent. Thanks from Angie and Sadie.
Happy New Year to everyone. We have litter mates Siberian Huskies. They will be one on 1/21/06. Both the male & female have been neutered. Our problem is they have alot of energy and jump up on any guest that visits our home. They have both been through puppy class & did well. I then became sick & for a couple of months could not train them or myself. Another problem is walking them. The dog that is in the lead walks just fine but the dog following is really hard to walk, he/she just pulls & pulls. I should also tell you that when they were younger they did not jump. They were very well socialized. Now, they seem out of control. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you
Dear Cesar,
I have a 3 1/2 year old rat terrier named George W. He is very energetic to say the least. He love to play and jump. I have learned so much from your show. I only wish that you could come to Fairburn, Georgia to work with me and George. I am one of your biggest fans. I tell every one about your show. I have been working with my George W using your techniques and am seeing a big improvement in George and myself. I love your show and never miss it. Please keep up the good work.

I have a 1 year old jack russell that has developed the habit of peeing as soon as she thinks you are taking her out or just to speak to her she will curl up and pee, and it is where ever she is, like the bed or couch. can anyone offer some help?
My wife and I took a 2 year old male Doberman named Zeke in from a rescue league and he is overly aggressive with his biting. He will not stop jumping and biting even when placed in a submission hold on the floor.I had 3 Dobes prior to Zeke and he's more hyper then all of them put together.I can't get "no" across to him no matter what I try.We watch the show regularly and my wife doubts Cesar could even help him.Does Mr.Milan travel to Pennsylvania by any chance? If not where do I need to go to meet him?
Dear Ceasar.
We adopted an 11 year old Golden Retriever in Sept. He is a very gentle dog and is very easy going. He adjusted very well to our home and our 3 grandchildren...the problem..we have an 12 year old english springer spaniel and she is not handling the change well...every time we try and play with Logan she barks non stop, if we try and quite her she just gets worse..she takes his toys and hides with them. Also, when he walks past her she snaps at him and growls and barks...he is hesitant to walk by her and jumps when she goes for him..Logan weighs about 80lbs and Cassie weighs 45...we would never give up Logan and Cassie has been with us since she was 8 weeks old..Help!!!!!
In crisis at home..

I adopted a one-year-old male shepherd-mix from an animal shelter 3 weeks ago. He (Wylie)was a stray so I don't know his background. He is wonderful when I am around - potty trained, does well on a leash, very loving. I found out immediately that he has severe separation anxiety. He has broken out of 2 different kinds of crates and barks/howls all day while I am at work. It is nearly impossible to get him to go into his crate - he seems to know when I am leaving no matter how I try to vary my routine. I am afraid to leave him in the apartment because he has eaten through part of the front door and surrounding carpet. I feed him every meal in the crate but he seems to know which times he is going to get locked in. I can't lure him in with treats either. When I am home he is like my shadow - always underfoot, trying to get on my lap or at the very least staring at me and wagging his tail. He is so dependent and needy. I really do not want to give him up but neighbors are starting to complain about the noise and I don't know if I can handle the stress of having such an unhappy dog when I am not around. I feel like I need to do some major "re-training" or behavior modification but I don't know where to start. Do you have any suggestions?
Cesar,
We have a 4-year-old chow mix Polar Bear, like the one you recently featured in an episode where the subject barked non-stop and really disliked the postwoman. Polar Bear regularly takes bits of her dry dog food and deposits them on the floor near the front door. In the past, she used to eat the food left at the door, now it just sits there until one of us cleans it up. What's going on -- is this some kind of offering? PS - GREAT show!
Love your show. Ihave just started watching and you are amazing! I grew up around a lot of dogs, but the situation my son has with a Katrina rescue puppy has me stumped. The five-month-old, spayed female Shepherd-chihuahua (she looks alot like a mini-Pinscher) was adopted at three-months-old and loves going outside to take care of business. BUT, when they come home after leaving her, she cowers and becomes very submissive and leaks every time they greet her! Since they're in an apartment upstairs, they have no way of letting her go out on her own. They tried leaving her in the kitchen with a wooden baby gate, but she went ballistic, chewed up the gate and peed and pooped all over the floor several times. When they stopped that, she calmed down and is fine - until they return, when she cowers and leaks. I've started calling her Squirt. They don't want to have to replace the apartment carpet. Any suggestions?
I would love to see something on how to get your dog to stop chasing cars. My Jack Russell loves to chase cars. I am terrified that he will get killed if he doesn't stop.
Great show! Keep up the good work.
I'd have to say I am so glad to finally see someone who understands dogs and sees them for exactly what they are...DOGS! I am the "rescuer" for a lot of my friends and family. I help them with all of their doggy dilemas and puppy problems. I have gone as far as to take their dogs into my own home to "rehabilitate" them and then "train" the person before I send the dog home(Sound familiar?). It irks me to no end when I hear of another person getting a puppy(or adult dog) without first researching the breed. The first thing I tell them to do is get a few breed books and read them cover to cover BEFORE getting the dog. KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GETTING INTO! There is no one breed of dog for everyone.
A co-worker recently got a border collie/collie cross puppy because she was "cute". Of all breeds she had to get the obsessive compulsive dog of the world. I've been giving her tips and pointers since she got the puppy and she has all but eliminated the "problems" she began to experience. House training, nipping, whinning, barking and crying when crated are no longer issues.
I hope to continue helping her and others head off future problems and fix the ones already present.
I have to say this....Ceasar, You are my HERO! Keep up the great work of keeping families together with their canine companions. The world could use more people like you.
Hello, I am just wandering if you have any videos that you sell and where to get them if you do? I have a heeler/doberman-cross who is way too protective of me and will not even let my older lab-cross come near me. She is smaller then my lab but has taken over as pack leader. Something my lab is not used to and he is 9 years old. She is 1 1/2. I am worried about how it will affect him. He doesnt look too happy. I have to muzzle my heeler when taking her out as she is aggressive with all dogs; taking her for a walk is more of a pain than enjoyment. She is excessive in everything she does and feel she is constantly fighting me so she can be the leader. She scratches excessivley at my sliding door to get in the house; I throw water on her, tell her no, but she still comes back. She jumps all over me and other people and is constantly wanting attention. If you have videos that you sell and can recommend one to me, I would love to buy one that will help me as my dog is more of a nuisance then an enjoyment. I am not the type of person to give her up, so will go on enduring it, but she is exhausting and friends have said sell her to a farm. She would probably eat their chickens. Do you think if she got beat up by another dog that it would smarten her up and bring her down a notch or make her more aggressive and needy? Thanks for any help you can give me!
Cesar,
Just a note of appreciation for your show. Your techniques are often discussed with respect among dog professionals in my circle. After discovering your program, I often refer the select individuals who get a puppy from me to watch it. It's wonderful to have a resource full of quality ideas that educate the family about how to interact with dogs that is not full of 'silliness' and 'hype'.
Please keep up the quality effort. Best Wishes~
I have a 10 year old Choclate Lab mix. Within the last 12 to 18 months she has started barking at me VERY Loudly when I am on the phone. People can not even hear me talk sometimes. The only way I can get her to quit barking for just a few seconds is to give her cookies. If I raise my voice to her she just barks louder. I have tried going outside and she will follow me and bark if I go to another room in the house she follows me and barks. Once I hang up the phone she will calm down. Any suggestions????????
Thanks
I have a Pug/Chiuahuh mix who is a pain to say the least. Potty training has been quite the obstacle. He's got to the point of hiding under things and around things to do his business. (How he gets it under folded blankets is beyond me.) Someone told me to "crate" train him when I can't watch him and keep the crate small because they won't go where they sleep.... Not this little guy!! He manages to still go and proceeds to track it all over the crate walls and floor. (It's more of a punishment to me than it is to him!) I will take him outside and leave him out there for 15 mins at times (until he goes potty) before I crate him, but nothing helps. He is good sometimes and others he is just a hassle....
Please help!
Wow, reading all these comments makes me feel a lot better about the problems I am having with my dog. I have a bichon/cocker and she suffers from terrible separation anxiety. I was reading someone elses post and the behavior is so similiar. I actually have 2 dogs but I am only having problems with 1. She tears the wall apart with incessive scratching. She is 8 years old and it seems to be getting worse. We live in an apartment and all her barking and scratching are probably driving our neighbors nuts. Cesar we live in Irvine and could really use your help!
Hi, I love your show!!!!!
This is to ANYONE who can help me!! I have a 1.5 year old GSD who is not fixed as I may breed her in the future. My problem is that she is SPASTIC! I can NOT walk her as she is aggressive with other animals. I have 60 acres but can't let her "run" on her own because she'll go to the neighbors house as they have dogs (on both sides of me and across the street from me). She does NOT listen to me. She did learn a few commands but only does them when she "feels like it". PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!!
Cesar, We cannot tell you what a difference in Chula since you came out,we can now leave the door open and she does not race out,we also have been taking her on the pack walk everyday and that has made her an extremely happy dog.Thank you so much for showing us that we were not satisfying her needs now that we are we are all alot happier. I surprised my husband for Christmas with your DVD as a refresher and we have gone back to it several times. Thanks Cesar you are the greatest. Rita & Jack
Hi,my name is vighnesh Iam 8. I am obsessed with pets mostly dogs. I really like your episodes. I really want a dog more than anything.
Hi Cesar,
I think your show is great, can't wait until the new season starts. I have an American Bulldog that weighs 95lbs.which I love, but have a problem with him around other dogs,he is to rough with them. At first it seems like he's playing but then ends up biting at the face. He's ok when i'm walking him and another dog walks by he doesn't try to go after it, it doesn't faze him at all. wish i could see something about that on your show. Your show has really helped us in other areas!! Thanks again
As a father and as a dog owner, I see so much that entertains and educates in what Cesar does and I look forward to the episodes to come. If Cesar gets his way, his show will spread better parenting, better dog ownership, and better people just from the lessons he displays
Cesar is like a "Mexican Monk" with all of his wisdom.

Hello Cesar,
My husband and I just adopted what we thought was a 6 year old chi/min pin. Turns out she is probably about 2 and purebred chi. She loves him, and loves me most of the time but has taken to biting me. It seems to me it is pure fear biting, but I dont know what to do. She attacks me when I am sitting by her and try to talk to her. The rescue organization (Waggy Tail Rescue in NYC) told us nothing of these problems, despite direct questions. I have called the Humane Society and a pet behaviorist in the city and am getting desperate. Please give me some advice. Thank you.
BODY LANGUAGE . . . I WOULD LOVE TO SEE AN EPSIDE SOLELY DEDICATED TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF BODY LANGUAGE.
My 1.3 year old min pin seems like he has alot to say but does it with his body and while somethings I feel I do understand (or so I think), others I'm totally clueless on.
The different tones of moans and grows I'd love to be able to understand. There's the low pitch wine. The snorking foot stomp.
What's is up with him rubbing the side of his face against things? In particular, if I've given him a new treat . . . he rubs his face with his mouth open making these moans.
He has his first introduction to a 1.5 year old and I feel it went better than expected. The child left behind an article of clothing and Chico immediately ran to it and wiped the sides of his face on it and rolled around on it.
I'll have to admit I was a dog hater and it was because I always thought they were dumb sappy dogs. Boy did Chico prove me wrong.
Hi !
I have a 4 year old cockapoo. she is the sweetest little thing you ever met, but she licks the hardwood floor through-out the whole house.!! We then noticed she licks everything from the bed, carpet etc. Is this normal? Is she lacking something? Thank You, Carly
I love this show! There are so many people who get dogs not knowing what to do with them or how to properly care for them. I hope this show helps a few people get their act together and be responsible pet owners. I so agree with Cesar, "Exercise, obedience and THEN affection." If people made any effort to educate themselves BEFORE adopting a dog, we wouldn't have shelters filled to the brim with unwanted animals. Thank you.
Nat'l Geo has been showing your program at all hours of the day and night in blocks. Thank God! That's how I found it and I'm sure many others will, too. I'm all caught up and I can't wait for the new season. Your theories reminds me of "Uncle Manny"..Don't know what happened to him. By the way, I have a Westie and a mixed poodle..perfect people, I mean pets..Have a bridge for sale!
To Jackie Ratliff and the 10yr old Choc. lab barking while you are on the phone:
First, stop giving her cookies. You're rewarding the barking and achieving what she's looking for which is attention. It's a dominance thing - my female black lab had similar behavior issues when I adopted her.
Key to fixing the problem is Cesar's motto: exercise first!! I walk my dog just as Cesar says and it made a huge improvement. I noticed it within the first week of consistently walking her at my side, in the appropriate 'Cesar' way. If you're not the pack alpha, you're always going to have trouble with gaining their confidence in you and following your lead.
Hi Cesar,
My parents have 2 Bichon's, both male, a 3 year old and 9 month old. Actually, we are not certain the 9 month old, Magoo is 100% Bichon even though his papers say he is. He is much bigger than Gus. Our problem is Magoo chews everything from Gus's ears to the doggy bed. I can't tell you how many doggy beds we have purchased and sprayed with the green apple which doesn't work. We tried not giving the dogs a bed but the floor gets cold and then they whimper and poor Gus pays the price for Magoo's bad behaviour. Gus used to sleep on a doggy bed in my parents bedroom but Magoo doesn't stay still. Even when he jumps up to sit with you he is always moving around and won't lay down, so he is putting all his weight on your legs with his front legs which is painful.
Any help you can give would be great! If you take your show on the road, please stop in Roswell, GA as my parents can really use your help.
Thank you,
Samantha
I second the motion: PLEASE do a show on potty training! My 9 month old Doberman, Gypsy, is going to have to be taken to the animal shelter if she doesn't learn! I love her dearly, but she is ruining my house!!

I love Mr. Milan's shows. I will be happy and sad to see him go to Friday evenings. His philosophy is so right on.
My two year old dobie/lab mix is "mama's" baby, but she only listens to dad! I know about the Alpha dog thing, but how infuriating! I am the one who feeds her, plays with her, but...still "daddy comes homes" and she is all about him!
I love this show. I watched the full first season and was amazed. I recently adopted a former puppy mill Cairn terrior. Have the intital 2 months of regaining her proper weight, spaying, breast mass removal and shots she is finally healthy. I like the show because I am prepared for the 'brat' stage she has entered into recently. I knew to increase her excersize and play time, and was able to communicate 'pack leader' to my son.
Thanks
I have seen a lot of people comment about potty training. This may not work for everyone, but it did for us. Our problem was communication, we didn't know her "outside" signals. We hung a large cowbell by the door where we let her outside and we would ring it every time we let her out using either her snout or her paw. It took a couple days but she has been accident free ever since. We took bells and hung them at all the houses that she visits so we will always know when she has to go out. Our problem now is that our "alpha" cat has figured out that ringing the bell means go outside and now he rings it. Who says cats can't be trained! We love the show. It's our dogs favorite too!! Thanks Cesar!
my dog also takes a swim and is very good at it, so good I decided to teach her to ride a bike, she can run too. So I entered her in the Kona Ironman Triathlon. She did very well but she kept falling off the bike. She came in 500 out of 2000 and 1st in her age group.
Hi Cesar...
I love the show, and have discovered that at least 1 of my 3 dogs have a symptom from every episode. There is Raven, who is doing MUCH better on walks. He now has the ability to ignore other dogs, fences with other dogs behind them and bikes(he hated all 3.)We are now walking perfectly in a heel. (HE used to pull and hes a 150lb rottweiler) However, I can't make him stop obsessing about food. All food is his(the other two dogs are not allowed to eat, and he will guard all 3 food bowls, and try to swollow all of the food as fast as possible. He does get agressive about it. Any sugestions to what I can do, besides locking him up while feeding toe other two?
The next one is Puppy...he's a 6 year old hyper mutt (rott/german shephard 65lbs) And he's neurotic. He cleans his paws ll the time, you can't touch them, and he has licked all the fur of more than once. His fear of fireworks and thunderstorms/rain is escallating. He starts of iyperventilating while running back and forth about an hour besore any rain shows up on the radar. He makes himself soaking wet with slober and then he tries to run through the door. Nothing I have tried has worked. Also when he starts escillating Raven the other male will attack him when he's frantic. Walking him works until it's over (45min to an hour or more. doesn't matter as soon as we come home he panics again.) What can I do?
When we see other dogs his firs instinct is to try to attac them. HE has in the past been attacked by a pack of dogs, while we went on a walk, and since then he's acting crazy. However once he siffs them he calm down and don't car about the other dog ever again. We can meet it 3 weeks later and he'll just ignore it. His behavior when seeing a new dog is like the pitt bull emily.
It seems like you can not excercise him enough. He runs back ansd forth every day. You can take him running in the park for 2 hrs, but when he gets out of the truck at home he wants to go for another walk. Treadmill a good idea??
My third dog is Kaos, 99% good, but she wishes she was an only dog. She'll outsmart the other two to steal treats, toys and blankets. Her bigges problem is that I have to pay her in treats to have her do tricks. For strangers, she acts like the ferfect dog... she LOVES the attention!!!
If anyone has any suggestions, let me know especially with puppy...the vet said he'd grow out of it, but he is 6 now...
If you are ever doing a show in austin TX....PLEASE let me know!!!!
Thanks
Linda
Cesar -
My husband and I love watching your show, and have learned a lot to be better parents to our 3 dogs. One of our dogs has a HUGE problem with destroying our house when we leave to go to work. We used to leave the 3 dogs to roam our partially finished basement when we were gone. Our Husky has always been destructive, but as she is getting older it is getting worse. In the last 6 months she has ripped the carpet off of several steps in our basement, chewed the molding, and was working on chewing on the subflooring. She recently figured out that she could claw her way through the interior door and has destroyed 2 doors in the process. My husband and I have been forced to crate her in order to try to stop the destruction, and now she has just finished chewing the bars off the side of her carrier. This alarmed us as in the process she was cutting her muzzle up terribly, and would have fresh cuts each day we returned from work. She then proceed to break the front door on the crate, (how, we have no idea!) and once again chew up a portion of the door/steps. This has become a obsessive behavior to escape every day, and we do not want her to continue hurting herself, as well as we can not continue to replace costly flooring and doors. Please do a show on seperation/obsessive behavior. Now she has begun shaking and howling when we leave, and even with a new crate she is still managing to move it slightly and chew on another piece of carpet. We both feel like we have failed her in some way and perhaps you could do a show concerning this behavior when the owner leaves and give us some tips. We are desperate to make her happy once again.
My 4 1/2 yr.old shepherd mix that we adopted from a shelter in August suffers from separation anxiety. He has torn down vertical blinds, torn up carpet, and scratched through the sheet rock on the wall next to the front door. The trainer we are working w/ suggested crating him. Murphy broke out of his wire crate several times, resulting in a broken tooth and bloody chin. We switched to a Vari Kennel, which he also broke out of and punctured his side in two places while doing so. I've given up on the crate! I'm scared he will seriously injure himself.I leave stuffed Kongs and other toys, but he won't mess with them when he's alone! The vet has prescribed prozac.HELP!!
For all of you asking for help with all the problems you have, I suggest the following. Buy and watch Ceasar's DVD available at his website; watch EVERY episode of the first season; get a phone consult with one of Ceasar's trainers available at his website. The phone consult is a little expensive but worth every penny! Every problem you have can be solved, believe it. The daily leadership walk is going to help more than you can possibly imagine. Ceasar's principles are few, simple, and absolutely effective. Do the three things I said and you WILL see results!!
I have the perfect dog in the yard, in the home, and on the leash......but if given the opportunity to be loose, she bolts and never looks back. She runs away if the door or gate is ever left open. She does not respond to bribery of any sort to be caught. We can only catch her when she is good and ready. She does receive walks daily up to 45 minutes. Is there anything in particular I can do? We have been through basic training already. She passed with flying colors....but is was on a leash.
I have a 6 month Rot who has been eating poop, both hers and my other 2 dogs, what can I do to stop it.
Mr. Milan,
You are the best, I love the show and you are so logical and work magic. I am addicted to your program and love to see all the successes. I am interested and benefit from all the programs. Our family Vizsla, Buffo of 14 years "went to the rainbow beyond the bridge" in Aug 2005. Our youngest son came home from Cal Poly so he could personally place him on our three acre property. It is now almost six months andd I want a tiny tiny Maltese (female, because I have three sons). I have been online, spend time looking at dog rescue, going to the shelter. Our family has enjoyed very well behaved dogs. "The Dog Whisperer" deals with problem dogs with great successes. I would like to see a show on, "Things to do and NOT to do when you bring home a new puppy, chosen breed, rescue dog. Even though I enjoy all the successes, perhaps a program in the beginning would be helpful. I expect there are others who would benefit from such a program. Thank you for all you do to help people enjoy their doggie family members. Renee Slarve, Walnut Creek, California
P.S. I am also having a terrible time convincing my husband that I NEED a puppy addition to our family. I so miss our Buffo who cannot be replaced but I want a new little puppy so bad. Our three sons are grown, and in college.
Please Help!!!
i have a 1 yr old Jack Russell named Ginger. Recently my husband i had a baby and ever since we brought the baby home, Ginger has become super aggressive to my parents dog (who she is often around) and super sensitive to any attention. She may be being protective of the baby but she is so mean to the other dog, biting him for no reason and jumping on him. Whenever we call her name, say come or try to take her outside to the bathroom she pees.
Prior to bringing our baby home, GInger was perfectly potty trained, even going to the door to let us know when she needed to go.
I have three Rottweilers who, like all family members, get into occasional arguments. I have been bitten several times trying to separate them. Does ANYONE know of a safe method to break up these pouting pooches? Turning the hose on them is not an option as it invariably occurs inside the house. Thanks.
congratulations caesar on a great show.we adopted a black lab from paw safe (she is now 5mos.)because she is so cute, i think she has become the alph. how can we correct our errors?if anyone is eating she will try her darnded to get at the food and if we push her down she will bark continueously, until i finally have to put her outside. then she will stand at the door and bark.(i'm sure the neighbors love this).
her other problem is she will not let us cuddle with her. she can be calm and lying on the couch, and if we sit down next to her she will see this as an invite to start nibbeling on you.now that she is getting older she seems to be getting more aggressive. she is great with other dogs and strangers, it seems to be just us that she likes to bite. we don't know if she thinks she is playing or just doesn't like to be affectionate.HELP!!!!!
thanks,
mary
p.s. please consider coming to boston, ma.
p.s.s. keep up the great work
We have a 3-year old male German Shepherd. He is an awesome dog EXCEPT for one thing - he eats items (whole) like socks, hair scrunchies, any type of paper product (papertowels and toilet paper) and yesterday I found (thank goodness, so far he always passes everything) a baby doll outfit, a sock AND a mini baby doll blanket!! We try very hard to keep things out of his reach, keep the doors closed and crate him when we are not around to watch over him. My husband and I are very concerned over health issues that may come about due to this behavior.
Any and all suggestions are welcome.
Mr. Millian,
I have a 6 yr. old Blue Heeler. He stays in the house most of the time and outside he is fenced in. The problem is, when he gets in the car to go somewhere with me, he bites at the door handle and then the dashboard and his eyes bug out and all the way to where Im going and back his tongue thickens and he drips and slings saliva all over my dash and windows. I assume he is too excited and trys to absorb to much at one time. He has been ridden in a car since he was a pup. So, what gives?, and what should I do??? Thanks, Donna
Mr. Millian,
My parents have a Shetland Sheepdog that was attacked by a large dog while she was a puppy ( less than 8 wks old when this happened ) and she was potty trained up until that point. Now she is afraid and refuses to go outside to use the bathroom. My parents have walked her, placed puppy pads outside, scolded her and even if the dog has been outside for over 2 hours - the dog will come inside to use the puppy pads every time. This is very frustrating and embarassing for them especially when they have company. I will say one thing, the dog hits the pad indoors every time. This is costing my parents, who are on a fixed income because they are retired, puppy pads can get very expensive when you are using 10 a day. She is now a little over a year old and we have thought of everything we can to fix this problem. My parents love this dog dearly, especially my father - who has had many strokes and was very inactive/depressed before the dog came to live with them. I'm sure this little dog has added many more years to my fathers life.... this is why my mother tolerates all of the soiled puppy pads in her house everyday. She has stated that if my father passed away, she would probably have to get rid of her if she doesn't stop. My mother has alot of work looking after my father, please help ease her burdens by giving us some tips to try. By the way, the advice from the Vet. did not work either. Thank you, J.Redden
Cesar,
Thank you for such a terrific program. I've not missed one episode you make it worth turning the TV on. I have an English Bulldog and especially enjoyed your Bulldog episodes. Cesar, you are definately AWESOME!
Dear Cesar,
I saw your show for the first time last night and was truely amazed at the work that you are able to do with these dogs and more importantly their owners.
I recently brought home a 2 1/2 year old Miniature Schnauzer that was ignored, neglected and abused. He is doing great so far living with us, but there are a few issues I have with him. I will definately keep watching your show and learning all I can. Thank you so much.
Hello Cesar,
I so truley enjoy your program and have learn alot although I am really hoping to see a future show on run away dogs. :)
I have a 2 1/2 year old Blue Brindle pitbull and at first chance she will bolt through ANY opening weather she has created it or if its just there and be gone. Then when we try to catch her she thinks its a game although if we try to be stearn she will run also. What to do. I will keep watching to see if I can learn anything about this. You are truley great! God Bless You.
Rebecca & Run Away Kylee
my dog wont get potty trained and we might have to get rid of her :(
First of all, I am so amazed at the work that you, Cesar, have done with dogs especially Pit Bulls & Chihuahuas. I've always said that if Chihuahuas where as big as Pit Bulls, they would be the most dangerous dogs on the planet! I was very much amazed when I saw that your one Pit Bull, Daddy, isn't even neutered & you can keep him in your pack without a fight!
Secondly, Lauren Snider with the 4 yr old Shih Zhu & anyone who has an older dog who has the same problem. Which is the dog drinks excessive amounts of water & pees like a lawn sprinkler. Please take the dog to the vet to see if the dog has Cushing's disease. It is a disease of the adrenal glands, usually with a benign tumer that causes the overproduction of cortisone. The tumor can become big enough to crowd out the other organs or destroy the adrenal glands. This can be fatal if not treated.
I know because one of my Pit Bulls got it at the age of 7 yrs, which is a little old to come down with it. She was drinking water all the time, peed in the house & still demanded to go outside! After a series of tests she was diagnosed, she gets pills twice a week for the condition & lets us know when to take her out without an accident. The only thing that we can't train her to do, is to not need to go out when we are watching a movie. But I guess that is what the "Pause" button on the remote is for! Perhaps it should be renamed: "Paws"!!!
Cesar,
First, I would like to commend you on an awesome show. I believe you are a true friend to dogs. You respect them and understand their nature, but you also understand HUMAN nature which is the key! I think every dog caretaker should watch every episode. Your advice is invaluable to novices and seasoned trainers (as I am) alike.
Secondly, I would like to commend you for rescuing and rehabilitating pit bulls and rottweilers, especially. I co-founded a Rottweiler Rescue group and also a small pit bull rescue group. These are 2 of the MOST difficult breed to responsibly rehab and place into loving, responsible homes. I just love DADDY! I own a rescued pit bull. We live in an area of dog fighting and he was very lucky to have been saved. Thank you for potraying these breeds in a positive light. You are a true hero to them!
I do have one "bone" to pick with you. On the episode involving Bandit, the announcer says that "SOMETIMES" your personal dogs are allowed off leash when working. The episode shows you, Bandit and his family, a Lhasa?, another Chi and Daddy the Pit Bull walking down the street. Daddy was off leash, next to a road. I would assume the road was blocked for filming, however, it still is not a RESPONSIBLE action to show your viewers. Dog owners MUST follow the law at all times. MOST communities require dogs to be on leash in public. Many communities also have additional requirements (though unfair) for pit bulls (muzzles, etc.). Though Daddy was very well behaved and a gentlemen and stayed by your side for the most part, I did notice him urinating on a tree in someone's yard. This is not being a responsible owner! Actions such as this perpetuate the hate some people have for dogs. You are quite familiar with pit bull bans and that is why pit bull handlers have an EXTRA BURDEN to ALWAYS act responsibly. Yes, Daddy is expertly trained, however, even the best trained dog in the WORLD can still become frightened or frighten a child, even though it is the nicest dog in the world. I assume the set was controlled, however, I would like to have heard a statement from you saying that the setting was closely controlled and reminding people to obey the leash laws. No dog, however, expertly trained and reliable should be allowed off leash in public, especially so close to a road. Too many times, "things" have gone wrong. No matter how well behaved, well trained and stable the dog is, there is always the chance of an accident happening. Possibly, a driver could think the dog is going to dash out in front of the car and thus swerves or slams on the brakes causing an accident. One mistake, such as if the dog ran in front of a car, can be fatal. Please reconsider showing a bad example like this on your otherwise outstanding show. Having worked in a veterinary hospital, I can't tell you how much pain and suffering could have been avoided if ONLY the dog was on the leash! IF I had a dollar for everytime a client said to me "he never did that before", I would be a rich person.
Thank you.
Hello Cesar,
I have a seven year old Boston dog named Lucky. He has a problem with marking his territory in the house. It is something he is doing all the time. During the day while I am working he is in his house(cage)and in the evening-night he sleeps with me. What would you do in this situation.
Cesar, you are a BRILLIANT human being! My biggest dream is to become an animal rehabilitator or the animal expertise of animal reconditioning like you do. I would be a vet assistant at the same time, maybe.
Your show fills me with such hope and happiness!
I really hope that Nat'l Geographic will air your show a lot more! ^-~
Hello,
I have a 15 month old cairn terrier, who is admittedly strong willed and now is being very obsessive with chasing shadows. I have tried so hard to train him, and now his neurotic behavior has me at the point of despair. I took him to training class, but he kept barking at the other dogs...the trainers (if I could call them that) could never tell me what to do to correct the problem, and at the end of it, told me that it was not a good idea to come back for more training. Since then, I have watched him go downhill even more. And now with the chasing shadows to the point of ignoring everything else, I am scared that I may not be able to help my dog. I called in a dog behaviorist, but I'm not sure she has given me very good advice- she wants me to give him "flower essances", which even if I believed that they would do him any good, I wouldn't want to give him anything like that for fear of any side effects (although I really believe it's a placebo affect). She also did not seem to have a good presence with the dog, or any real plan of attack for helping him. I have seen your show, and if there were any advice you could give to someone who wants to take control of her dog back to help him past his anxiousness, I would be greatly appreciative. Thank you.
Greetings, Mr. Millan:
Boy, do I miss my dog, Boo Boo!
For the urinary tract problems mentioned above:
The very first thought when your dog has inappropriate urination is to rule out the physical. Is there a urinary tract infection? Is there kidney disease? Is there any endocrine gland problem? So - discuss this with your vet ASAP. If there are no physical causes, your vet might be able to recommend a good behaviorist in your area.
For the thirsty dog, is the dog getting enough water to begin with? If it is eating only dry food for some reason, it will thirstier than if eating wet or raw food. Is the dog extremely active? Ask the vet assistant how much a dog should be drinking per the dog's weight. (Sorry - I only know about my kitty.) You might be surprised at the normal range! Also, there are other conditions besides Cushing's Disease that cause thirst. Urinary tract infections feel less painful when one drinks a lot of water (even so, the vet should still treat the dog). Another condition FAMOUS for causing excess drinking is diabetes. (Very treatable.) Drinking too much water can also be dangerous. It's called water intoxication.
So find out how much the dog should be drinking (30 milliliters or cc's = 1 ounce; 240 ml or cc = 8 oz or 1 cup or 1/2 pint; 1000 ml = 1 liter or approximatrely 1 quart; 1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds). If it really IS drinking too much, get that poochy to the vet ASAP.
I also agree with Denises's posting #103. My husband and I watched the episode while seeing the loose dog pee on every tree he passed by in the background. It's a good thing for the show's intern that he didn't poop in that neighbor's yard. Perhaps the show needs a continuity editor! Keep that dog leashed if only to keep the local Dog Warden happy. I think you should acknowledge this glitch in the next episode you film and add an addendum to this one regarding leash laws and traffic dangers.
Otherwise, sir, keep up the 99% good job!
I have an Old English Sheepdog - 14 months old. He has panic attacks when I leave him. He loves to ride in the truck but if I get out and don't let him out with me he barks and almost screams excessively. Even when I'm outside the vehicle gassing up and looking at him straight in the face. When I go to work (part time a few hours a day) he almost chokes himself on his rope trying to follow me. Does anyone have any suggestions?
To Leigh B
Regarding your request for Cesar to do a show on potty training, Cesar is an behaviorist not a trainer. He deals with issues. If you need to potty train your pet, hire a trainer not a behaviorist.
I watched your show on Jan 6 and was very impressed with the way you got Hootie over the fear of children. I have a little blue heeler that is terrified of people in general with the exception of my husband, myself and a neighbor who we walk with daily. I wish I could get her over that fear as well as you got Hootie over his.
We have a 10 month old Bichon. She is well behaved except for one thing. She won't stop barking or crying when she is in the car. We are planning a trip to Florida in a few weeks (we live in Michigan) and I am dreading the ride. Any suggestions?
I have a 3 1/2 year old Chesapeake and Lab mix. I use to own a 1995 HOnda Civic and for the past 3 years and 4 months he would sit in the back with either his head out the window or between the seats next to me. This caused all kinds of trouble in the car, not to mention the danger. I recently got a new SUV and now he is confined to the back of the vehicle with a gate that seperates us (Much Safer), however, he is constantly crying and whining and he has also gone as far as ripping the gate down upon himself and in the mean time riped the top of my new vehicle. I have since roped off of the gate but he chews through it and constantly cries. Nothing i do will prevent it. I find myself frusterated as i will be moving to Arizona from Minnesota in 9 months. If he does not quit this behavior, i will have no choice but give massive drugs for the trip. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I am more frusterated by the day. I just thought he would "Get use to it" But it has been getting worse. Thanks for any help!
Ceasar,
When are you coming to the East Coast? We need you too!
We have a wonderfull dog in Tyler, in the house that is. He knows who ALPHA is in the house and yard, however, last winter while walking on a leash on an trail w/ my husband the two of them were attacked by a large PIT BULL, knocking my 250lb husband to the ground, Tyler took over and was able to get the dog off my husband and prevent him from being mauled. BUT Tyler sustained many injuries and when the police arrived on the scene and fired ther guns to break up the dogs Tyler ran home(across a busy street and about 1-1 1/2miles) since that time he has always acted w/ aggression towards all dogs outside the family. He is fine w/ us in the house, yard and car. His aggression is now extending to humans on the other side of the fence, especially when I or my husband are around. Any ideas to let this great family pet know we are greatful for his protection but we don't need it 24/7, are neighbors are afraid of him now because of the look he gets in his eyes-"glazed-over" and his barking at them. Anyone have anyideas on how to help this wonderfull over protective pet. THANKS!
Hi I love your show just discovered it a couple of months ago and love it love it. Would like to ask a question I have a yorktease about 2 years old and she is soooo afraid of thunder she trembles and runs around and I can not do anything for her until it stops. What can I do for her when there is thunder??
Sincerely,
Marie
I met my husband and his female pomeranian 2 years ago. His dog was excited to have me around until we got married and I moved into "her" house. She is house trained but we have found lately that she has started to use the carpets in the house instead of going to the door when she needs to go out. From watching Cesar's show, it is evident that she is dominant over my husband. He caters to her every whim. I, however, have set boundaries and limits. Is she using the bathroom in the house as retaliation against me or is she confused about who is now dominant. HELP! My carpets and my nerves can't take much more.
I have this dog and he barks non stop!!!!! he is a really good dog. I love to train dogs but he is not trainable!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To Geri it sound like your dog might have worms. what you should do next time when your dog goes poop put one poop in a plastic bage take it to her vet or the vet and have it tested to see if your dog has worms. ok bye for now Danessa
I have a three year old female mix breed. I do know something about her early year as I adopted her when she was little over a year old. I know that she was left alone way longer during her early days than I think was appropriate (12 hr days). She now has tremendous seperation anxiety issues, which are getting worse with time. She is distructive, and urinates and defecates inside the house daily. I have read that I should try retraining her, by leaving her alone for very short periods of time (less than 10 mins to begin with and then longer periods of time up to 1.5 hrs). Withholding attention on departure and return. Does this sound appropriate?
Dear Dog Whisperer,
Thank you for enlightening America's love for dogs. We have learned a lot from you.
My loving husband has gotten for us a lab, we live in NYC and have wanted this dog for years. Her name is Olive and she is 8 weeks old. She is a breeder dog and since her fist night her stool had a little bit of blood and has not stopped . We took her to the vet and he is doing some test on it to see if it is parasites. We also thought it was ok to start taking her out to potty and she was doing great, but the vet said we had to wait another two weeks until she receives all her shots so now she is going inside everywhere! In addition she soiled her crate and seems a bit sad and now she wont go near it. We are a bit frustrated because we were of to such a great start and now is all gone down hill. How do we get her to sleep in her crate again?? and should we praise her when she "goes" inside the apartment? or wait 2 weeks to praise her when she goes outside.
I am trying to work from home as much as possible so we only leave her alone 2 hours max, please let us know what to do, I really do not want to mess up my puppy , I know this first months are crucial!
Again thank you and hope you come to NYC soon, a lot of us could use your wonderful wisdom.
Ana
My hound, a 5 year old English Coonhound, is trim shy. I understand why, but I also know that it's important to keep her nails trimmed. I've taken her to several vets and groomers to have her nails trimmed. She behaves badly -- she howls, it sounds like she's being tortured, and she wiggles, and needs to be muzzled not because she bites, but because she makes such a racket, it scares anyone within hearing range. I believe that her behaviour is learned, as no one has hurt her during these trim sessions. Taking her to the vet or the groomers every couple weeks or so can be expensive for me. I would like to know how I can help her overcome her anxiety and groom her myself. Please help!!
I have spent the last several years rescuing Dachshunds and rehabilitating their bad behavior. Until now I have had great success. Molly, Mambo, Moses, Mango and Moxie the Doxie were great pets.
Now I have Miggy, who is a monster. She came to me as "Peanut" from a woman who paid $900 for her and maybe that's part of the problem. I'm not used to dealing with such an expensive Doxie. If I didn't have the papers I'd swear she is a bat/cat. She literally flies all over the house- a big no, no in my Doxie household. I do not encourage ANY jumping and certainly no flying.
I have caught her in my clothes dryer, on the kitchen cabinets, the dining table... It wouldn't surprise me to walk in and find her hanging from the chandelier and I have no idea how she gets up on these things.
She is truly out of control. And at this point so am I. I'm in Vegas and have tried to find a "Cesar" person here but most are about my level in obedience training.
Does anyone have a suggestion before she kills herself? She's 1 1/2 years old.
Thanks.
To everyone who mentioned their unfixed animal:
STOP BREEDING DOGS WHEN MILLIONS ARE EUTHANIZED IN SHELTERS YEARLY!
i have a seriouse problem with my seven month old yorkie, he humps me like crazy, he has started marking his territory in the house (which he never has done untill recently),and is chasing other dogs and neighbors. he hasnt had any of these issues untill recently, he was doing really well with his potty training. i need this pee peeing in the house to stop, we are moving into a new house in two weeks. i dont know if this makes a differance, but we did just loose his friend big jake (our lab we adopted, he passed on Dec 26), bentley did mourne him, and is still sad a little, but i dont know if that is what is causing his humping, and peeing in the house. anyone with suggestions please help:
thank you
To Bentley's Mom:
I don't know what Cesars stand is on neutering a male dog but I had the same problem with a male of mine. He was a year old when I got him from a shelter. His name was "Humpty" for obvious reasons. I had him neutered & the humping went away. He didn't mark territory but I think that neutering might take care of the situation also. Unless you are going to breed him, neutering will calm him down & keep him from getting certain types of cancers. It will also keep him from biting someone as 67% of dog bites come from unneutered males.
I would also go to the local pet store & see what products they have to take care of urine problems. Some have a phremone that keeps from remarking the same spot & some have enzymes to break down the urine so the dog can't smell his "spot".
I have a 3 yr.old rescue neutered male Doberman who is not happy with our recent move to Newfoundland, where it rains a majority of the time. I will take him and my Boxer out on walks and the Boxer will go, but he will not...until he gets back in the house and then pees and poops all over. He's done this right in front of me on multiple occasions. I've tried ignoring him, scolding him immediately, enzyme odor remover, crating, and nothing is working. I am at a loss and am renting the apartment and am afraid of the permanent damage he's causing. Any suggestions?
Mr.Cesar Millan, we wish you were on tv more than once a week, but realize how terribly busy you are!!! We have a Chihuahua, Pepe, that when out in public he's almost idental to the little one on your program last Friday. Unfortunately I came in on the very tail end!!! I'll never give up hope on Pepe but he has a true mind of his own even though I'm trying to be a human alpha of the pack. Is it possible to repeat the show on chihuahuas or have more concerning that tiny but mighty breed? Thank you so much for caring about all the k-9s in the world. You & your family are truely a gift from God. Sincerely Cindy Toney & Pepe
I've been thinking about the problems with housebreaking & I have realized that there are many fine books that deal exclusively with that subject. (They even include an Idiots or Dummy's Guide to Housebreaking.) I would recommend a copy for any dog owner whether they have problems or not.
As to my earlier entry about the subject of humping, I just found an article on that very subject. It says that dogs who do that are for dominance, control, attention getting (!!!) or stress reliever. Wolves do it in the wild to establish their heirarchy.
I can't type the whole article but Cesar has dealt with the situation by telling you that you are to be the pack leader.
I would appreciate any help anyone could give me. We adopted a rescue greyhound 2 years ago. He is the best dog we could ever have recieved. He was in the prison training program and is completely housebroken and does not have any behavior problems. We even have a cat and they get along. He loves other dogs. The problem is he is so afraid of people. I walk him everyday and try to get him around people as much as possible. I am forceful when we encounter strangers and make him continue in their direction and show him no harm will come to him but he panics. We go to meet and greets at the pet store and when he is around other greyhounds he relaxes and allows people to pet him after awhile. What can we do? When someone rings our doorbell he charges to the door barking and stays there until they leave. When we have company he totally ignores them, allowing no one to pet him. Once he gets to trust you he is your friend for ever. He is fine at the vets or getting him groomed. Please help, he is so interested in everything that goes on. He loves to lay on the porch and watch everyone but that is as far as it goes. Thank you
I have an 8 year old border collie/great dane mix who has grown into a really wonderful dog. He's been through obedience training (twice),responds to basic voice and hand commands, great with people and plays well with other dogs.
My problem is that he is cat crazy. From the time I got him at age 8 weeks, he has become completely insane whenever he sees a cat. When he was a puppy we lived in a complex with a lot of cats. I tried every sort of exposure, from one on one to having him in a friend's house with multiple cats. He does not attack or attempt to harm them; he will simply go up an let them scratch his face off without moving. He walks wonderfully on a leash until he sees a cat, then it's as if his brain short circuits. He becomes so frantic it's all I can do to pull him away. We become entangled in a really embarassing dance on the sidewalk. If anybody has dealt with this, please respond.
Hi Ceasar:
I have a 2 year old daschound/chihuahua named Odette. She is a very sweet dog. My son got her use to sleeping with him every night and I want her to sleep in her own bed. HIs bed is gets very dirty beacuse of her sleeping with him. The problem I have is, when she does not sleep on someones bed, she will poop in the living room or hallway. Again, this only happens when she does not sleep on someones bed. We have taken her outside before we all go to bed and sometimes she will go to the bathroom and other times she won't. She is a very sweet and smart dog. We have a doggy door but do not leave it open at night, it's too cold. Please HELP!!!! Last night I got very upset with her (no spanking of course). She urinated in the living room, pooped in the hallway and in the living room. What do you suggest we do? I don't want her to sleep outside, but don't want her to continue to poop or urinate in the house.
Previously I had worked as a veterinarian technician at a local humane society located in Oceanside,California this is where I happened to adopt a 5 year old French Bulldog a female who is not housebroken and seems not to want to be some days and nights we are lucky but I would say 50% of the time she is having a accident. She was on at least 5 different medications for her allergies which also include food. She has been off the medication for about 2 months and it has gotten a little let me stress that a little better I really need help I've only had the dog since last August and I am on the verge of giving her up.
Any ideas on why my 12 year old, healthy, english cocker has decided that she should use our home for pottying? She does it right in front of me at times. Only the carpet, not the flooring. She has never exhibited this behavior before. Now I find I'm cleaning up messes and pouring enzyme to deal with the smell constantly. Help! She does it when we're home and when we're away. Any ideas on fixing the problem?
Got alerted last season to your show by my daughter, and was amazed at the gift you have concerning dogs, and probably animals, in general. What a gift! I watched last season's episodes over and over, and have applied certain techniques to my Terrier mix, and they have worked. Still working on the barking/yelping and excitability when doorbell rings, or someone appears at door, or even just is walking on our street. I have earmarked Fridays to be my hour with Cesar and am just amazed at all the different problems people have, and how easy it seems for you to just make things better. You are truly blessed. And Thank You for having such a different approach to handling dogs, and training people.
love the show! the realism is key. I read the other two messages on "chasing shadows". I recently brought a 4 month old english golden retriever into my home with my 3 year old existing golden. I had them meet outside of the home so that my 3 year old martini, would accept her better and not have the new one preceived as an invasion. My brother, recently had my 4 month old "sambuca" buca, chase a laser red pen light. BIG MISTAKE! Since that night, buca now chases "shawdows" in the home obsessively. Up and down the stairs chasing her own shawdow. I have filmed it and meeting with a trainer from Metamora Canine Academy in Michigan today. I am considering enrolling her in the 6 week off-leash in-kennel program they offer. Both my dogs are exercised regularly on and off leash. socialized at dog parks as well as we take them with us most places we go if weather conditions are ok for being in the car. Buca will shawodow chase until she is completely exhausted. last night she did it until 11 pm until we had to shut off all lights. the fireplace created movement...and she still stared at the cealing. I need help with this and some advice as to how to help her. The trainer told me she knew of a dog who chased shawdows until her pads were bloodied and her nose. I am so afraid of buca getting this obsessed. I put up a gate to stop the up and down at the steps....and try to re-focus her attention...doesn't work. Potty training is also difficult with her. Are you ever in Michigan??? -Deanna

HELP! My 2 month old Australian Shepherd "Rocky" is living up to his name...he is obsessively eating rocks. He is an inside dog but each time he is outside, he finds a rock, if it is not laying there for the taking, he pulls one out of the grass and swallows it. If i try to take it away, he gulps it up even faster. It has gotten to the point that he is going for the cement bases that are holding in the fence posts, trying to find a loose piece of concrete. I have taken him to the vet and the x-rays showed at least 10 rocks in his large intestine, we are working on "lubricating" them out. I have been taking him out on the leash, but he is not interested in going potty, just rocks. I thought maybe he has a vitamin deficiency, so i'm now giving him supplements. I think he is possessed i think hes going to start spewing green vomit!! Can someone please help???????
LEIGH ANN,
Regarding your adopted shepard mixes separation anxiety. I too just adopted a 11mo old shepard mix from the shelter and could not get him into the crate without picking him up and shoving him in, which he hated and I felt terrible. Treats didn't work for me either. My husband read about taking a Kong and filling it with cheese or peanut butter (both work well) and letting him lick it and put it into crate. This gives the dog something elso to obsess over while you are gone instead of obsessing over you. I couldn't believe it, within 1 day, he was RUNNING into the crate and waiting for his Kong! We switch off what we put in to keep it interesting, we also hide treats (bones, chicken, etc.) inside the p.butter or cheese. Please try this for a bit before you end up giving him up yet again. That is probably his worst nightmare. Good luck!!!
To Terri Millard--
Give me a break. Taking your dog to a shelter because of some pee or poop is irresponsible. Have you been to a shelter lately. It is disgusting how many dogs are there. There is no reason a pup should be there for such a minor problem. We as pet owners should know when we get a pup that there will be damage to our homes, unfortunately for us there is usually something we don't like but it is unfair to just cast them off. There has to be something YOU can do to correct this. Crating, letting dog out immediately upon waking or getting home, don't let it have full run of the house at night, etc. I just adopted a 10 mo old pup from a loaded shelter because the owner left it alone in the house for 8 hours and it chewed up their precious shoes. Who's fault was this? Well, I lucked out with an awesome dog with some issues we are working through together. God luck and please keep trying!
Any suggestions to get my dogs to quite digging holes all over my backyard? They have 1/2 acre with toys, sticks, balls to play with but continue digging like crazy.
Hey Ceasar I learned so many things from your show I watched it since day one your really amazing!,
BUT! I have a little problem ! I have a 1 1/2 yr un nuterd male (chich)mix and hes a big problem. Like a couple of months ago he bit two of my family members, both had stiches on the lips. He gets along with other dogs but when it comes to us (humans) hes physco, his hairs stand up, he shows his teeth and barks like hell. The ASPCA attempted to take my son away but they didn't. !!HELP!!
Hey there ceaser,
I think everyone who owns a dog has 1 or more problem to deal with.
I am disabled so my wife wanted me to have. a house dog. for companionship. I've never had a dog live in the house so I just said no. I've always had dogs that lived outside.
My neighbor poisoned them. That was 12 years ago.
I finally caved when she brought home a boarder collie. She was 2 mos. old . Now she's 4 mo. some of the problems she has are, uncontrolable excitement Since I'm here all day. I give her plenty of exersize. she likes to jump up on me and lick me all over. My forarms are all scratched up. That with the heal comand are some real issues. she'll go to her pen on comand, sit,lay down. I've watched your walk beside method ,she tries to take off with me. when i let her off the leash she won't listen to any thing like come. she gets plenty of excersize. can you provide me with some insite. i've read some books These issues sounds like a lot of people. I want to get her under control before she's older. thank mr.b
I adopted a black lab from a shelter in October. He suffers from separation anxity. He doesn't like being left alone. He chewed his way out of a kennel, breaking off both bottom canine teeth. He chews on door knobs, trying to get out. He's uncontrollable when I leave - howling and drooling all over. I can't leave him alone. Other than this, he is a perfect dog, great with other pets, other people, riding in vehicles, he stays in the yard without being tied up, he comes when he is called. I can leave food out and he doesn't touch it, even when I go away. My vet suggested sedation therapy which Shadow has been on for two weeks. All he is now is listless and droopy. He still becomes riled when I leave.
I heard about Cesar Millan yesterday from a friend. I'm hoping you have some suggestions to help my poor dog.
Dear, Mr.Millan,
I have three large Dogs all is well except lick, lick, Lick with the youngest. Annie is a pound puppy I was wondering if this was a inferior problem with her and how to make it stop, infact I've seen her toung come out of the side of her mouth to get a lick of the Grand kids she's a sweet rott, in fact can learn tricks with in minutes and also copys tricks my 14 year old dog can do. Like you I have established my self as pack leader.
Thank you, Sincerely Sidney Plummer
We have a 5yr old Chocolate Lab. He is exercised daily. Lately he has been barking at my wife, when she is in the living room and I am in another room. It is like he is trying to tell her something, but we don't know what it is. The tone does not seem aggressive or frustrating. The other night for the very first time ever he was standing and turned and tried to grab his tail. He didn't chase it, but the action along with the barking are unusual for our dog.
What could be the cause of this behavior?
I have the sweetes golden doodle pup. She is 8 week old and loves to play. The pup is always chewing and loves to nible on my fingers. When I repremend her she backs off and barks back at me. It seems to me that she's doing it in a playful manner or to look cute. I'm worried that it could be a dominance problem. Can you please help me and give me an idea on what this lovable pup is thinking before the problem gets out of hands. Or do you think that I'm over reacting?
Thanks, Estevan.
Bless you, Cesar. I have learned so much from watching your shows. I have 3 dogs and the problem I have, is how to control them all at one time. My husbands' office is in our home, and when he's on a conference call or walks out of the office, it sounds like we are at the Humane Society. And if one barks, they all bark. Same goes if he's on the phone and the doorbell rings. It is really annoying behavior and maybe one of the upcoming shows could deal with this issue.
Thankyou Kindly,
Teddi T
I have a 1 year old Chihuahua that cries and whines for attention. I work from home so he is used to me being around. i try to ignore the crying but it just gets louder and louder. If this does not get my attention he barks at me and then begins to scratch and dig at my legs.
Any suggestions?
Thank you
Scooter
I read about the dogs that chase shadows or reflections and mine is also having the same behavior. We have a Jack Russel Terrier. We also did play with him using a laser pointer pen in the past for few times. But once the laser was turned off, the dog would calm down. As I mentioned, we haven't done this again for months, and the dog behavior was normal. All of sudden, he began licking any light relfections in the walls, at the point when his nose is bleeding. I don't know what to do. I'd appreciate any suggestions.
Thank you,
Luis
Response to #109, Tini:
I disagree that potty training does not fall within in the "realm" of a behaviorist's expertise. It most certainly does. I am an accomplished dog trainer and hold an Associate's Degree in Applied Animal Science. Dogs inappropriately urinate for a vast number of reasons, which a behaviorist can surely assist with. By showing people how to PROPERLY potty train their dogs, Cesar can show people how to do it CORRECTLY (i.e. shoving your dogs nose in it is NOT correctly). "Failed" efforts to potty train a pet is one of the reasons pets are turned into shelters. I also do rescue work, so I know. I am sure Cesar could do a show on a dog that had issues with potty training and he could work in how to properly train your dog to begin with. I STRONGLY recommend veterinarian check ups for any dog that is inappropriately urinating first and foremost. The problems could be with humans. First, letting ANY dog go for much more than four to five hours without the opportunity for relief (to go potty) is unfair (even if the dog successfully holds it). This is especially true in the case of young/old/sick dogs. Other reasons for inappropriate urination could be medication, diet, territorial, boredom, fear, nervousness, etc. Therefore, other than a vet, someone like Cesar could greatly assist with potty training.
Response to Marian, #114.
As a pit bull owner, I would like to sincerely say I am glad Tyler survived the attack. You had stated he is alpha and dog aggressive before the attack. In all fairness, it is likely he began the attack on the pit bull, however, the pit bull due to its history of dog fighting won't back down. Unfortunately, it is what our ancestors bred these dogs to do. HOWEVER, regardless of who started the attack, I assume the pit bull was OFF LEASH, therefore that dog's owner is to blame and he should be made to pay for any injuries to Tyler, your hubby (glad he's ok too) and also to pay for a behaviorist for Ty. Ty does need a behaviorist in person to visit him. I strongly urge you to get professional help. Please read my post number 103 regarding off leash issues. I can't tell you how many times I have walked my leashed and trained Rotties or Pits (I always walk where I know dogs are required to be on leash) and a loose dog has run up to us. A behaviorist can teach you how to handle these situations. I carry a throw chain to scare the dog off (one of my rotties was very dog aggressive) if urging the owner to leash the dog does not work and I want to "avoid a confrontation". It is funny that with the bad reps on both dogs and both breeds are easily recognizable by the average joe that people still don't respect me when I asked them to leash their dogs. In closing, I would urge you to ask the Chief of Police in the town this happened to train their officers in properly breaking up a dog fight. A stray bullet could have injured a person or Ty could have been killed in the street by accident. Did they try pepper spray first. Good Luck, I hope it works out and I hope you got the pit bull's owner to pay up!
I didn't realize Daddy was not nuetered or I didn't notice. Shame if that is true! Unless there is a medical reason for Cesar NOT to nueter his dogs, shame shame on him! Having raised and trained (never bred) Rotties for 13 years, unfortunately, because of showing in the breed ring, I could not nueter my dogs. As soon as they retired they were altered. I no longer show and none of my animals are intact. Having been involved in rescue work, I am now opposed to all breeding of dogs and cats, no matter what, until we get the population under control and then only qualified breeders with qualified dogs should be allowed to breed their dogs to continue the breed. Strict criteria, including genetic screening and regulations should be applied if criteria are met. It makes me so angry to hear scientists are cloning dogs...why so we can kill them too?
When innocent dogs and cats are murdered every day simply because there are not enough homes, there is absolutley no reason to breed your dog or cat and no reason for "accidents" to happen. My first involvement with "rescue" was when I was eleven years old and I volunteered at a humane society. A litter of 3 english setter / pointer mix female puppies, 8 weeks old (probably what the backyard breeder couldn't sell) came in. As son as the shelter manager verified they were females, which no one wanted he explained to me, he gave the order to kill them. I can still remember the looks in their eyes as I held all three at once and can still hear the sound of their last breaths as the lethal injection coursed through their veins. That was 30 years ago and shelters are doing better at saving lives. I cried all the way home and I quit the shelter because of it. I still feel quilty today because I could not save those 3. I guess many people won't agree with me, but I urge you to STOP BREEDING NOW! Teach your kids pets are not disposable! They are our future. Nueter and spay all of your companion animals.
Cesar, I really love your show. I'm not usually into many shows that my husband watches, but we both love this one. I have a 17-month-old pug, who we got when she was 10-months-old, from a breeder. She's a well mannered dog, except a little nervous and skiddish. I'm frustrated, because I watch your show regularly, but I have the opposite problem as most of the others. My dog will not move when she's on the leash. She's nervous and just lays there and shakes. She wanders out of my yard though, if I take her out without a leash. She's really hard to get back in the yard. I'm afraid she'll be stolen or hit by a car. She is spayed, so I know it's not to get to other dogs. Anyone, have any suggestions?
Hi I have a Yorkie and he is soooooo cute and adorable and affectionate and he is only 7 and a half months and I am only 12 but I am not sure at what age I can keep the collar on him without him loosing his hair around his neck?? Please help thank you!!!
Sonia and Jesse :)
My husband and I love your show and are so impressed with the way you are with dogs. We are both retired animal lovers and we share our home with an oversized Sheltie 8 years old and an 8 month old minature Pomeranian. The Pom, Benjie, does not like other dogs except for our Sheltie,Toby. When we are around other dogs he sounds like a Tazmanian Devil! When he gets like that he is almost out of control. We took him to obedience class to try to social him with other dogs and the instructor says it is to late. We should have done that when he was much younger. Do you agree it is too late? If not, how do we proceed with socializing him with other dogs? He loves children and most adults. He seems frightened with some people and growls but has never bit anyone. We promptly correct him so he knows that it is unacceptable behavior. Is there help for him? Can you suggest a tape or book for us? Thank you very much.
Best Regards,
Ilene and Howard Nutt
I inherited a blonde golden/chow I guess since part of his tounge is black /maybe lab mix at 9 weeks old and 13 pounds from a neighbor who kept him on a deck for a month until he ate her cable and dug holes. I had visited the dog when I saw her. She eventually threw the dog at me one day and said keep him or I will kill him after the cable incident. She had gotten him from a person giving away puppies at a local wal-mart in the parking lot and her granddaughters thought he was so cute. The neighbor never started him on vaccines or any kind of training and had a big flea collar for a big adult dog on the little guy. I took it off immediately and her grandchildren would carry him around like a toy sometimes when they visited and threw him hard down on the ground when they were threw with him. They also gave him people food or left overs.
After having the dog thrusted at me, I kept King and promptly started him on his puppy shots and trying to walk him on a leash. I also have to travel in and out of the country alot for work purposes and was planning on taking him with me once he has been neutered and had completed all of his shots. For some unknown reason, my vet says the dog has to be 9 months old before he is neutered. He is now six months old. I provide a dog sitter who stays in my condo for him when I am gone. I had him doing the crate thing but the dog sitter got him out of it. However, he has not had an accident in six weeks inside but I do walk him about two miles a day total or so. He is a great dog. He has chewed up a few things but not really destructive. He engages in some imaginary digging in his dog pillow with his dog treats. He likes to ride in the car and doesn't do the dog thing of hanging out the window and sits in a sphinx position in the back seat or lays down. He loves attention. I also last month had a male kitten thrusted on me when abroad who is now five months old. I brought the kitten (Duke) home. King who is now over six months old and over forty pounds and Duke who is less than five pounds get along wonderfully. They sometimes sleep together, they play together and they try to eat together but I have to make them not eat each other's food.
Now for the strange thing King and Duke do: King will let Duke nurse him and he cleans Duke and he lets Duke take his puppy chews from his mouth while he is eating them and doesn't get upset. The vet told me to ignore it but it seems strange and they are both male animals, not to mention different species.
As for the bad habits King has:
1. He retreives everything from sticks off the ground (which he carries proudly), pine cones, paper, beer cans, and anything someone has thrown on the ground. Inside he will drop whatever he has inappropriately in his mouth when I tell him but outside, I have to dig through his mouth and he has a death grip on whatever he is carrying and won't turn loose or mind outside when I tell him to turn loose what he has (this includes even when he is in Petsmart or Petco where I have to dig out what he tries to shoplift from his mouth). He only minds inside at home about dropping what is in his mouth. He has a death grip on whatever he picks up outside of the house.
2. He tries to eat dog poop even other dog's from outside.
3. He tries to greet everyone he sees by standing on two legs and trying to be eye level with them and almost knocks people down. He learned that when he was much smaller when people would go up to him and say old cute puppy and now he is much bigger it isn't appropriate.
4. He tries to chase cars (but happily so) when we are walking and he pulls after them and does his two leg thing of walking. The dog sitter I had last kept wanting me to buy a retractable leash to let him romp more but I am terrified to do so since he chases the cars or trucks most of the time that drive by and I am not a small woman but he is strong enough to pull me and I am afraid he will get loose and get hurt. I have the long nylon leash on him from Petsmart and his is on his third nylon collar since he keeps growing from Petsmart.
5. About forty percent of the time, he literally walks me and does his two legged backwards dance to pull me someplace he wants to go or when he tries to catch a car etc.
He is a great dog and most of the time he has no issues. It is the few things I mentioned above that I would like some suggestions on.
I would like to see the episode of the dachund on the bed--being agressive. I have the same problem and want to know what to do. My husband can't enter the bedroom without the dog racing across the bed to attack! J.
We have a six year old lab husky mix and we question the treatment she received from her previous owners because she has severe anxiety issues. She does not get along with most other dogs very well, she fights. She stays in a large kennel whenever we go someplace. When we are home she has the run of the house and continually has accidents in our basement. She is an older dog and had done very well with potty training but if we don't keep an eye on her constantly she has accidents. She doesn't always tell us when she has to go potty and just goes in the house. She was on amitryptiline for her anxiety issues and did well on it but she's no longer on it. We are going to be moving to a new home within the next few months and are very concerned about her having accidents there as well. Is there anything that can be done, or is this just a lost cause?
Oh where to start! I have a great 5yr old Rottweiler she's most the time very sweet and friendly. The keyword there is most the time. She is very aggressive to any other dog that comes around but she was very well socialized when she was a puppy! I can't let her off a leash at anytime or even leave the screen door open because if someone opens the door and she was to get out no telling if she would come back. The come word when outside doesn't mean anything to her at all even as a puppy if she was off a chain or a leash she would run away and she had lots of room to run. The thought of her getting out one day and not coming back scares me. Walking her is even hard because I am scared if she sees another dog her weighting more then me she could hurt a loose dog or she could get hurt... Anyone know away to help me??
Cesar I think your great. Just an idea for a change of pace u shuld do a puppy problem show.
I love the show dog whisperer, BUT was really disappointed when it wasn't on this morning . it was on 5 days a week in the mornings. what happened.
Ceasar you could help sooo many dogs at shelters with behavior problems. Keep up the wonderful work we can't watch you enough. thanks mia, winnie and katie, both rescues.
Hi, Ceaser I am the owner of two dogs. A 3 year old female shih tzu and a 2 year old male pittbull. I have no problem with my shih tzu, my my pitt bull's behavior has gotten out of control. He has become extremely submissive and aggressive. Its gotten so bad that when you approah him he starts to shake and growl. He doesn't do it all the time but he shouldn't be behaving like this at all. I try to prasie him as much as I can, but it seems it is only making him become more defensive. I am afraid that his aggressiveness is only going to become a bigger problem and that he is evetually going to snap at me or somebody else. I've had him since he was about 6 weeks so I do not understand why we would act so aggressive towards me. If im too affectionate with him he growls and his hair stands on his back. I could look him in the eyes and he begins to growl. He is a good dog but lacks confidence and I fear that his behavior is only going to get worse. Please give me any advice on how I can control and destory this problem. Thank You 17 Crystal
MY AMERICAN BULLDOG IS 15 MONTHS. HE HAS BEEN GROWLING AND SNAPPING AT MY HUSBAND AND I. FOR EXAMPLE THE OTHER DAY HE HAD MY DAUGHTERS LITTLE PURSE. HE LIKES TO PLAY "SEE IF YOU CAN GET IT FROM ME" WELL MY HUSBAND GOT UPSET AND CHARGED AT HIM WITH A DEEP VOICE YELLING DROP IT. WELL I KNOW THAT PROBABLY CAUSED HIM TO SNAP BECAUSE HE WAS SCARED BUT HE CAME FROM BEHIND THE CHAIR AND PRACTICALLY ATTACKED HIM. HE NEVER BUT MY DOG "ROMEO" CHARGED HIM BACK. ANOTHER EXAMPLE WE WERE TELLING HIM TO GET OFF THE BED, I WENT TO GET THE REMOTE OFF THE BED THAT HAD JUST FELL ON HIM. HE SNAPPED AT ME AS I REACHED ACROSS HIM, AND EVEN LEFT A LITTLE BRUISE ON MY WRIST. ITS VERY FRUSTRATING BECAUSE HE IS A WONDERFUL DOG, GREAT PERSONALITY AND GOOD WITH KIDS AND FAMILY, EVEN STRANGERS. WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT THIS OR TRAIN HIM. HE IS NOT SPAYED. I AM DEFENITLY CONSIDERING IT NOW TO POSSIBLY REDUCE HIS TEMPER. PLEASE HELP!!
MELISSA
dear Cesar,
I have a 3 yr old german shorthair/ pointer named eleele. he is very keen on digging holes in the yard especially right next to the house. i know that dogs have the tendency to do this to get comfortabole but mostly he is bored... however, my dad can't stand it. also, half of the problem is that we never can catch him in the act and every thing we do to break this habit does't work... putting dog doodoo in the hole and otherthings. i know he knows what he is doing is wrong cause i can point the hole and he totally grounds himself in his kennel. i dont understand if he knows that the hole he dug is bad, why does he still do it?
p.s. eleele means Black in Hawaiian, my dog is black and white.
love your show,
aloha, talia
Dear Cesar,
I have a 5 month old Schnauzer mix. When I first got Oscar from the shelter, we were ecstatic as he was very smart and never had any problems until about a month ago. He does not want to eat his (dog) food and prefers table food. We stopped giving him table food and I have tried several kinds of food but he still wouldn't have them. Oftentimes, I have to hand-feed him and give him a treat after every bite just to reward him for eating. I have also tried soft/wet dog food but with the same results. I tried to be firm and only give him sometime to eat, after which, I take his food away and not give him anything. The downside to this though is he will eat his poop because he is hungry. I am so desperate and really need your help. I had asked some people/trainers and they said to ignore him and take his food away if he doesn't want it. Please help...
I love my dogs and were planning on moving soon and if I don't train them then we have to give them away. And they are always there when I need a friend to talk to and there always there to make me feel better. Please I have tried everything but when can't take him to trainning school because we don't have that much money. So will you please help me so I do not have to get rid of them. PLEASE
HI! My name is Dana, I have a Yorkie that is 3 Yrs. old, and she has become obsessed with me. She is always looking at my feet and follows me wherever I go. Sometimes I trip over her, step on her, and kick her on accident. If I move she moves, I am really becoming concerned. This has been going on for about 6 mo. now, at first I thought she just wants me to sit down, and pet her, but even when I sat down, all she was concerned with was my feet and if they were going to move. What can I do?
Kudo's Ceasar,
I have a 2 1/2 year old female golden lab/husky mix she was a shelter dog who was extremely abused. It took me a year and a half to calm her down and break her of abusive situations. She was used as an asktray, kicked in the head, beaten with sticks, her dew claws were ripped out and she was full of lice, fleas and blisters when I saved her. Since then she has epilepsy and we have started her on treatment. Three months ago we decided to get another dog so we searched the shelters and found and Austrailan Red Blue Heeler she too is 2-3 years old and abused more than the shelter led on. I have had her for 3 weeks now and during that time the lab had a double grandmal seizure, the aussie was spayed so we have had them living seperately in the same home, we alternate them from the basement to the upstairs. At night each dog sleeps in a bedroom then we have to rotate them for bathroom calls and attention we have given them sniffing moments but the aussie shows her teeth and the lab wants to jump on top of her. They had two accidential meetings and both times it has ended up in a battle with the lab being victorious for the most part the aussie retreated and trying to hide. For the most part both dogs one on one are obedient and they mind their boundries, they are both sweet and loveable and they each have their unique personalty.
People tell me give it time some say let them battle it out but my gut feeling we need help from an outsider, I watched your show with insane dane and the match maker boxers that was the show that impressed me on how to try and deal with these two females. What do you recommend I do - the history of abuse I can deal with and make each dog comfortable but I want to find a right way to socialize these two do you have any suggestions. I have alot of patients and so does my family but I don't know how patient these dogs are going to be.
I appreciate your time and keep doing what it is that you do maybe some families who watch will understand that you don't have to abuse a dog to make it behave. I use the hands on method with the lab to calm her down I make her submit to me when she is having a wild moment and it works great keep letting people know that something so simple works so well.
Melinda,
To separate fighting dogs, you will need another person. Grab both dogs by their back legs and pull appart. This is the way we have been separating our dogs, and not get bitten. However I have no idea what to do if there is only one person.
Good luck
well my dog loves boys like i do well you should pamper yuor dog and take him too spas thats where i take my fe-fe to get his nails done and where he can meetother boy dogs socially
Dear Cesar,
As a member of rescue, I have a few suggestions for people with problem dogs:
1. Spay or neuter. Dogs do not need their hormones, it causes trouble in youth and cancer in old age. They are not human. Also, my vet always said that spaying and neutering changed their relationship with animals to the better, but does not change their relationships with people. The notable exceptions is the dominant aggressive animal. As we say in Texas, "Neutering takes the hair off his trigger." We have so many unwanted animals that are euthanized every year with for no reason other than they are surplus.
2. Invest in a good appropriately sized carrier/kennel. Dogs see these kennels/carriers as their "den", not as a "cage". They will naturally want to stay there if you make it a good experience for them. The experience is good for the human too, as a period of cooling off. If your dog does not like the kennel/carrier, watch "Dog Whisperer" and take notes on the parts about being the "leader of the pack" and then on my part about making the kennel/carrier a good experience for them.
3. If you have adopted a rescue animal, do not expect it to be perfect or to know what to do. Do not, as I saw, on one of the shows of animal rescue take an animal that has been abused and neglected and shower it with toys and put it in a kennel/carrier, then wonder why the animal misbehaves. This animal needs to know learn to trust you, toys mean nothing in the beginning. Be consistant always.
4. If you have a dog with housebreaking issues, please take the dog to the vet first. If the animal cannot control its bodily functions, please consider a dog door to a fenced yard. Been there, done that, it works. My six week old orphaned Rottweiler puppies figured that out after feeding time.
5. Always remember, a pet is work for the whole family. The adult humans are legally responsible for the dog's care and behavior. You cannot blame your child for not taking care of a pet or training it. It is a life time responsibility. Teach your children well by example.
Do the right thing for the pet not yourself.
If you find any of the above ideas disturbing, please get another pet like a gold fish.
Thank you,
MAM
Hi,
My black lab, ~7 years old, has developed an obsession with licking himself. It started with his paws and in between his toes, which we attributed to his seasonal allergies, but has in the last 6 months progressed to obsessive, frequent licking of his grown area as well as a worsening of his paw-licking behavior.
He has always been a licker (he loves my father's feet for some reason), and has had typical lab skin issues in the past, however it seems that lately his self-licking behavior has really gone out of control (my fiance' hates it when he gets into a fit of slurping and licking at 3am).
Could this be psychological?
Thanks!
DS
Cesar,
Your show and the technique you have with dogs amazes and fascinates me. I have a lab named Max who is obsessive with a tennis ball. He has become my husbands pack leader where this is concerned and controls his outside time with the ball. He also was hit by a car a few years back and will not go outside without us. I feel like he is in control more than we are and need some guidance as to a way to change this situation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hi,
My 2 year old cocker spaniel has recently started gworling at us when he has food. This is an agressive, frightening growl, with a mean look on his face. How can we stop this from happening again? He does not do this with toys, and is not an agressive dog. He has never shown this tendency before. Iwant to keep this dog the loveable one he is. Any suggestions, Please offer them.
Thank you.
I have a 1
I have a 12 year old greyhound, who weighs 103 lbs. She's not a fat girl, she's just huge. She stands 28" to the top of her shoulders, and is 32" from shoulders to base of the tail. She also has a very large heart, about 15% larger than normal, but we have had echograms, sonograms, etc. which confirm her heart is normal in all ways but size.
I adopted Elsie when she was 8 years old. We were told she had arthritis, and we put her on glucosomine, chondrotin, and MSM supplements, and I walked her daily; she improved immensely. Elise is undergoing treatment for cancer, she has an excellent prognosis. However, she cannot eat for 24 hours or so, and is very weak between treatments, and I cannot exercise her outside as we once did, and she has become lame in that right rear leg. We discovered she had a major injury which ended her racing career; her right rear leg has a large pin in it. I have consulted a vet orthepedist as well as a vet physical therapist, all agree she needs additional exercise. My husband and I watch the Dog Whisperer faithfully, and I recall one episode where Cesar taught a dog to use a treadmill. Could you please tell me if this episode is available? And are there are any recommendations as to the type of treadmill? Any additional advice is greatly appreciated.
Our 3 yr old toy poodle is a well socialised, well behaved dog,BUT the only thing he does which we cannot understand is lick, not himself, our arm if we are holding him, if we hide the arm he will try for the face when on our lap, and if all this fails he will lick the air. He does nothing to mutilate himself, has someone home at least 75% of the time, is part of the family and stays in and outside at will, is put to be in his own pen at night and allowed out again in the morning and always has been. He has a large amount of land to run on and gets all the exercise he wants. This is not disturbing for us but if it is a problem for him and needs to be dealt with we would like to know. CAN ANYONE HELP.
HELP!! I can't stop watching The DOG WHISPER,I think I am a bit obsessive, too!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE your show!! I never missed an episode.
For all those pleading for help...find a canine behaviorist in your area...
"obedience" trainers are *not* the same thing.
Cesar has given you the basic tools that are at the root of all issues:
EXERCISE! LEADERSHIP!
A tired dog is a happy dog.
1.) Humans need to control the resources....or take leadership role...dogs must do as you say to earn food...
have them wait for you to go through door first, etc.
2.) Separate dogs if you can't control them together.
3.) Reward dog for positive, calm submission--only give attention when dog is doing what you want.
You won't learn this stuff from most "trainers"....
its "behavior".
WILL LOSE DOG OR APARTMENT IF NOT HELPED SOON:
We just adopted a one year old german shepard lab mix from the shelter. Her previous owner kept her tied up all day outside by herself so she, Kirka, is not used to being inside. We live in an apartment so we don't have a lawn for her to play in. Kirka runs with me, about 4 miles, every other day and my wife comes home everyday during lunch to walk her. When she is with us she never cries or barks. But, according to the neighbor downstairs, as soon as we leave for work she goes crazy and cries all day. (We put her in a crate when we go to work).
She is a great dog and I've already become attached. But we can't afford to be evicted. Please Help soon
MY DOG IS A JACKRUSSEL AND IT DOES NOT STOP BARKING COULD SOME ONE PLZ TELL ME HOW TO GET HIM TO CARM DOWN
Hayley,
We have our 5 month old puppy in "puppy school" and there is another dog with the same issue. The trainers said to spray apple bitters in the dogs mouth when they bark. It has worked for the dog in our class.
We desperately need help with our 5 month old puggle. She has a terrible case of seperation anxiety and when we leave her in her pen, she poops and runs around in it. It's not that she can't hold her bowels because she makes it through the night just fine and it's not a matter of us leaving her for too long because it doesn't matter if we leave her for even 2 hours. We come home everyday to a poopie pen and puppy! We're doing everything we've read we should to help with the seperation anxiety and she is much better about not whining so much when we go. I've searched all over the internet and cannot find anyone else who has ever this problem. Even our trainers are up in arms. They are out of answers for us and we feel completely helpless. Has anyone heard of this problem and can you tell me how to fix it???
I really enjoy the dog whisperer show and wish it were on more often. I've gotten alot of my friends to watch it and are fascinated how quickly Cesar accomplishes things with the different dogs. I wish he would do a show on dogs urinating in the house and also on dental care.
I was wondering if you could help me with a question i have about my 6 month old doberman. I have seen many dobies lately and he is of a good comparison. sometimes i find them to be a little larger then him. how much should he way roughly at his age of 6 months. he is fed very well but sometimes decides he isnt hungry and then other times he is very hungry.
Hello, I was wondering if you can help me with my 3 month old German shepered/lab mix puppy. Taking him out when it rains and snows is a nightmare, he will not stop drinking water from puddles and or eating the snow. It has gotten out of control, I try pulling on his leash so he will not drink or eat the snow but I'm scared I will hurt her neck or throat by doing this. He is big and I am a petite person and can't pull him away all the time, I can't imagine what will happen when he is fully grown, please help!
This is a wierd one! My neighbour has a border collie that barks at everything!!!! And all the time. It is so annoying. I have spoke to them about the problem, but nothing has improved. Is there anything that "I" can do about this problem? I have tried walking up to the dog at a fast pase and sternly saying "No" but this only works for a few short moments. We have a chain link fence between us and he barks at us, the cat, our dogs, and everthing thing in between. I sometimes use the hose. ; ). Not sure what else to do . Please help. Thanks for your wonderful show. We love it!!!
I am wondering what to do about my 10 month old labrador who is afraid to jump in the back of my truck. As a pup she got her tail caught in the back gate as I was closing it, and now no matter what form of incentive I offer ( I have gone so far as an entire roast chicken in the back seat) she will NOT jump in. How can I assure her of her safety and remediate this behavior?
Patrick
By the back of your truck do you mean back seat in the cabin, or the trunk? I hope it's not the trunk, because it's a very unsafe place for a dog. When I adopted Ruffy from the Humane Society I had to sign a document saying that I will never let her ride in a trunk of a truck.
My hair stands up each time I see a truck going 70-80 mph, with a dog in the back. Sometimes the back gate is not even closed.
HELP!!!
I have a 7 month lab. She is very well socialised and loves other people and dogs.
She has started digging up the garden, chewing furniture, anf humping her bed sheets!!!!
But the main problem is that when we tell her off for something (eg jumping on the sofa) she goes crazy and runs around in cirlces and attacks us!... and i mean ATTACKS us!!! what can we do!!!!
I LICK MY MUMS ARSE!!! AND I FUCK MY NAN!!!
Cesar's show is the greatest that I have ever seen on dog handling.
Having said that, who ever came up with the idea for 2006 Loud music in the back ground, should be told that we want to hear Cesar and not the loud music.
Just turn it a little more down so that we can enjoy his comments and now the loud music.

The other day ago my dog was eating a bone and normally he's a very gentel dog, and the other day ago my 9 year old sister goes up and messes with him when he was eating his bone. Like I said he is a very gentel dog and anyway he growels and thats just warning the person not to mess with him at the moment. The next day he goes to get another bone and my sister the same one goes up to him and messes with him again, and he barks and fights with her to get away. Now he went under my moms bed and he wont come out and when we try to get him out he barks at us.It's very frustrating.
I have a 1 1/2 Labrador. He has always been good with people specially kids and also other Dogs. We also have another dog (a beagle) to keep him company when alone.
But just recently he is starting to be aggresive with other Dogs. He gets threathend when other people's dog at the park approaches him.
His aggression is not very wild. He would usually calm down when he thinks the dog is not a threat, or when my Beagle would initially approach the other dog.
But How can I make it go away, When I just want to walk
with him and get occassional approaches from other dogs.
Thanks,
Rommel
Hi Cesar,
I wanted to tell you first off that I love your show and the way that you handle problems even in older dogs. It has lead me to beleive that you might be able to help my mother and my niece with there problem. They have a little mixed dog that is about two years old but, he has a problem with wanting to use the bathroom on the carpet or chairs in other parts of the home.I guess he is marking his territory. My mother keeps him locked in the pantry at night but, when she gets up she lets him out in the morning and all through the day. He has a big back yard but, that does not stop him from using the bathroom on the carpet or on chairs when he wants.
Poodle rumble... I have a ten year old stndrd poodle (Q). Just adopted a troubled teacup(Ransom) 3yr old poodle. They do not get along. How do you introduce a new dog, to a established home dog. Its been over a month, and they don't get along... They constantly want to mount each other, which causes fights. I had to break them up the other day, and was bitten by Q for the first time ever. I worry for there safety. Its 30 pounds vs a 4 pounds. I wish they would just get along. There both very good listeners and fairly obediant, when not adrenalized. I can tell Q; no biting only kisses, and he will snarl while licking Ransoms face. Q doesnt want to be in the same room as Ransom. His tail not standing up. Looks depressed most of the time now. Am i trying to hard to force them together? Help... I love my dogs.
Dear Mr. Cesar:
I have an 8 (?) year old Shetland Sheepdog. We adopted her from some neighbors about 4 years ago. They were moving and couldn't have her anymore.
At their house, she lived outside and was never allowed to come inside. She was put into a shead during rain storms. (Come to find out, she's terrified of thunder.) They were, basically, afraid of her. From my understanding, the only contact they had with her was with a tennis ball that she'd fetch. When she'd return the ball, they would wait for her to drop it because she growls when they (and we) take the ball out of her mouth.
The owner before them was an older man who got to be too old to care for her.
Now, in our house, she barks (goes crazy, really) at the strangest things. To name a few, doorbells, kitchen appliances, and electrical cords. When ever anyone leaves (or enters) the house she barks like crazy. When ever I try to repremand her, she growls and bites. I don't know what to do with her.
We also have three Maltese. I refer to them as "yap dogs" because they also bark at the door. Could it be that Lassie (the sheltie) is teaching them (the Malteses) to bark? Or is it the nature of the Maltese to bark? (Now that I think of it, the Sheltie too because she's a hearder?)
Hi,
I recently bought a 2nd Basset Hound (November) who, at 1 year old was rather attention seeking and cried constantly when we brought her home. We already had an 8 year old very gentle loving Basset (both female) who recently has had problems with her hind legs and is on Metacam and a special protein diet.
However, we have noticed that very regularly our newer basset will attack our older basset Viciously, if the older basset get's any of our close-up attention... It's getting to the stage that it's quite frightening, even though the younger Basset (Daisy) is very gentle and fearful, due to the environment she had come from prior to our home... We're very frightened for our older basset who is a complete treasure and we love dearly. Would you have any advice for us?
Best wishes,
Clodagh.
i just recently bought a 12 week old chihauhau, and she goes potty on my floor, sometimes she will go outside but rarely, i tried giving her treats when she goes where she is supposed to but still frequent accidents, and also i cant leave a room for 30 seconds without her whimpering or crying, it seems as when im not holding her she cries more often, i feel like i have to take her everywhere i go, what can i do to break her of her bad habbits?
PLEASE HELP
thanks nikki
I have a two year old minature pincher by the name of Boobedoo. He was given to me during Hurrican Katrina. He is a wonderful little dog that brings joy to my heart, however I can not get him to stop marking the edge of my furniture with urine. This is the first male dog I have ever owned. HELP!
You are great with dogs!!! We have taken in a minnie pin that has had a hard time finding a family. We have no experience in potty training, we tie him up outsidefor 10-20 minutes until he goes, but he stil seems to pee and poop inside the house. He also runs away if he gets the chance to get out the door, and it takes awhile to find him. We want this dog to be a part of our family and if he continues on this road he will have to leave, he is just a yearold and we just had him nuetered a month ago.We have 2 Boys that love him to death and we need your help!! Come to Utah or do a show on potty training, PLEASE!!! Thanks and any advice or help would be appreciated!!! Tank You Again!!!!!! The Maynard Family
We recently got a Jack Russell Terrier for our son for Christmas…although we actually got her before the holidays. Everyone warned us about having such a “hyper” dog, but I just would go back and say, “Have you met my son?” Which would imply they’d be a match made in heaven. Besides, my parents own 4 Jack Russells, 3 of which they keep outdoors, and one which stays indoors. So I felt I could handle one as well. We live in a city, so we wanted an indoors pet. I watch your show and was determined to walk her and play with her and all the right stuff. Potty training was quite a hassle. After 3 months and 5 carpets shapooings later we almost never have any problems. But, I hate her. She has 50 chew toys, bones, etc to chew on and play with , but if I leave my shoes around, they are gone. The othernight, we left for 10 minutes,. I had not finished my dinner, and in that time, she broke out of her pin, jumpped on the table, and got a (9 West) shoe and got on the couch, and chewed it up. (She’s not allowed on the couch.) I have tried all the techniques all over the net to deter her behavior. Although we have papers on her, I doubt anyone would want such a terrible dog. I am about to take her off to a dump and drop her off, I like my shoes, and she has chewed up 3 $100 pairs. I liked her before she chewed them up, but now it is very dificult, when she consistantly poops and pees, with no attempt to go outside, and chews on my things, plus get on the furniture when I provided her with cushions and blankets for her to enjoy. Plus she has gotten attached to and only to my husband ands she growls at my son any time he tries to pet her; its supposed to be his dog. What do I do???????????????!!!!!!!!!!! Should I get rid of her?
HI

me and my partner have been fighting a lot when this happens my jack russell bars and jumps at us both,he seems very sad and un happy what shall i do.
Melissa,
Watch as many Cesar's shows as you can. It looks like your dog is not getting enough excercise. As you know this breed needs A LOT of excercise, he is probably never tired, with tons of pent up energy. Every time Cesar works with a new dog, he insists on walking more, excercising more. Try that.
One of my dogs used to be like that in the beginning. I cannot tell what a huge difference an early morning run (about 1 hour) does to her. She comes home calm, tired and ready for nap. I don't have to worry about any shoes or things me or the kids left on the floor.
My family has a golden retriever named Duke, and besides getting excited when people come over, he is a pretty good dog. Last may though, I found and rescued a Rat terrier/ chihuahah mix of the street and named him Tobi. The vet sayed he was about three months. When I brought him home, everything went good and the dogs love each other and play together. Tobi is now a year old and he has three issues that are driving me crazy. Despite numerous efforts, he is still not poddie trained. He will not urinate in the living room, but insists on bolting up the stairs and lifting his leg on my bothers bed. Is he marking his territory? He is not nuetered, so is there a chance that this will help? We also have a cat and I have tried everything to keep him out of that also. The last problem is that the dogs don't fight over food or anything else, but sometimes they will growl and get agressive over bones even though they always get the same special treats. I have tried everything for these problems including the spraybottle, shake cup, and using words like no and "huh, huh". I also try and take him for at least two 20 minute walks a day. Anybody that has any advice on how to correct these problems help me!!! Please, I am desperate.
Anyone that can help me with the problems in the above story, email me at purpleteen13@msn.com
ps. Ceasar I absolutely love your show.

Dear Cesar,
My family has a 1 year old black lab and he is a good dog until he is by the road. He has an obsession with chaseing cars. I have tried everything from chaining him up to a tree by the road to sitting out there with him correcting his every move. I don't know what to do. I don't think I can handle loosing another dog to a car.Do you have any advice???? HELP!!!!
Dear Cesar,
My fiance' and I rescued a 4wk red nose pit puppy (left off a side of a hwy). We had been told by the animal rescue that the pup was a pit bull/golden retreiver mix. 5 months, 9 collars, and 75 pounds later... "Granger" is a very large red nose (we believe now he is 100% staffoshire terrier-no mix)Is this a common size for a 6month puppy? When do they usually stop growing?
Our pup loves to be inside and is an emotional wreck if placed outside (when were not with him). Lately when I come home from work at lunchtime to relieve "Granger" there is some sort of disaster. We rarely have a problem with his potty needs (potty trained at 2 months)but when it comes to odds things in the house (too much to list)he thinks it belongs to him and eventually destroys it or hides it under his bed. When repremended, he gets so emotionally sad, and then so loving... we can't stay mad at him.
I am now concerned with his size and accessibility to almost everything (he can open doors but hasn't yet mastered the key to lock trick!) and safety of our two cats. He loves the cats and does not understand why? the cats spat at him when he comes close.
Please HELP!!
P.S. Is it normal for this breed to cry when he hears others cry?
HELP IN CASTAIC, LA County
Hello! I have had my 4.5 MinPin/Chi mix for about 4 years now (he is a great dog and finally potty trained). We just rescued a 3month old female MinPin and i'm not sure what her situation was prior to the shelter...but i'm guessing not so good.
We have had her for about 3 weeks now and she constantly goes potty on everything (in her crate (on her bed), my other dogs bed, their little play bed - everywhere. It seems she goes on the carpet rather than the hardwood floor or tile. I have been using Natures Miracles potty pads and every once in a while she goes on there but her excessive peeing is really exhausting and it's frustrating me. I know every dog is different, my other dog wasn't this hard to train, but she is truly tough. I'm not sure what to do. I don't think I can crate her yet because she is too young and her bladder is not strong enough... Any ideas on how to get her to stop going in her crate/bed area?! I have tried to keep it clean by washing it and even putting bed pads around it. I think her sleeping/relieving set up was probably in the same place prior to the shelter and coming to us. Any advice would truly help us i'm running out of ideas :-(
Thank you!
Maria and little Bella
I'm sooooo buying Cesars Book today!
Dear Caesar: I don't know if you will receive this e-mail or not, but I am desperate for help. Soon, too soon, I will be forced to consider whether or not I will need to "put down" my beloved Lab of 16 years. She is loosing the use of her legs.
I have already decided that I will not take her to the vet for the "ultimate" act, but let her go to sleep, here at home.
How do I project the calm energy you always refer to? This is my beloved Lab - a perfect pet - I've never had any problems with her. We've been together since she was 8 weekis old. How am I supposed to remain calm when the grim reaper comes to my home for her (My husband and I have already decided that I can't take her to the vet - it's too steril - too cold).
I simply do not know what to do.
Lynn
My 6 month old male Bichon Frise fights terribly when I try to trim his nails. He has given the groomer and his Vet a difficult time too. Any suggestions to remendy this problem behavior? Thanks

Aloha,
I would like to know how to stop my show sheltie pupsboth females . one 15 month the othe 5 months, from digging holes in my yard. I have done verbal and showed them that this is not good. I have put screens over the howles but they still will dig. They are crated at night. Let out in the moring and the are out in the yard most of the day. Do I crate them more during the day and remove all the barriers on the holes and just watch. Please give me some insight on how to correct the behavior. They have lots of toy and I do not baby them. I train for conformation, but this is driving me nuts.

We have a 4-year-old poodle who did not have an aggressive bone in her body until she had her first litter this past December. She was a gentle, attentive, loving mother while the puppies were nursing. She warned the other animals in the house one time to stay away from the puppies box and they all honored that warning and kept their distance.
But since she has weaned the puppies when they were about 5 weeks old she has become very aggressive, even attacking the other dogs/cats in the house very viscously (sp?) is she feels they are infringing on her space or her attention from us. She even attacks her puppies and our Old English Sheepdog! She will also growl and snap at us if we do anything she doesn't like now. WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO HER??? Has anyone ever heard of this abrupt personality change following the birth of a litter? And what do we do to get our previous mild-mannered poodle back?
Thank you for any info/ advise anyone can offer.

Help! I have a 2 1/2 year old Sheltie that is beautiful and a wonderful dog except for one MAJOR problem. She seems to have a type of separation anxiety when anyone leaves... She barks, howls, scratches, nips, runs in circles, and will do all she can to prevent anyone from leaving. Its not just my husband or I, she acts this way when anyone leaves her presence whether its at our home, or a friends. She starts this behavior as soon as she sees me put on makeup, pick up my car keys, put shoes on, etc. Once we are out the door, she may howl for a short time, but she is not destructive to the house or furniture, nor does she go potty in the house. It seems we have tried EVERYTHING... obedience training, treats when we leave, medicine, crating her, etc. My husband has to restrain her anytime guests leave our house. My one friend witnessed her behavior and called her "psycho." It causes anxiety for me and now I have a 4 month old baby to deal with too. Anytime our dog sees me packing his diaper bag or buckling him into his carrier, she starts to act this way. It makes getting out of the house almost impossible and I'm afraid how she will act when our son starts walking and goes outside to play. We love our dog so much and it breaks our hearts to think that we might have to get rid of her because of this behavior. What can we do???
Dear Mr. Millan,
Hi , I have a SUPER WELL BEHAVED DOG black lab mixed she is always chewing my shoes all of them she gets them when I'm away from home--RE: she is actually my fiance's dog --- she's great with the kids neighbors kids- all people doesn't poop- or pee inside and no matter what I try she gets them I actually put my heels up on the 4th shelf in my closet and she managed to get them down--! She is a great pet all around I just don't know what to do to make her STOP chewing my shoes !!!!
Thanks Jeanie
My husband planted evergreens along the fence, about 18 trees, my 4 year old Doberman Pincher constantely uninate on the trees, now they are all dried up. Is there any product we could use to prevent the urinating without harming the evergreens? We have bought some products from the pet stores but nothing works.
My dog Lady is a 3 year old Border Collie. She is a wonderful dog but she's really neurotic. She stares at shadows on the ground for as long as she can, sometimes just standing in one spot, on alert, staring at the ground for over an hour! She also never wants to stop playing fetch, she makes "yodeling" noises whenever we're not petting her, and runs "patroll" along our fence for hours, until there is a path with no grass at all. It gets frustrating. does anyone have any advice?
I have 2 english bulldogs, 1male and 1female. When they are in the yard by thereselves thay do fine they play. When one of us walk out there sometimes they are ok but sometimes my male which is the youngest will attack my female, for no reason. He does not do this all the time just every once in a while. I can i stop him from doing this? He also argues with her sometimes thru his crate. I think the dog has a split personality. They both love people to death, and would not hurt anyone, and my female does not everstar it with him. I tis always him. What can i do
Hi Caesar,
My husband and I have only started watching your show a few weeks ago, and your intuit and creativity for finding solutions is truly amazing. I am especially intriged by your make-shift collars and training aids. So much so, that I wish you would create a line of doggie products for us viewers. The double collar, for example.
We have two male beagles. They were purchased from the same breeder and are actually half brothers sharing the same father. Each has a personality and character of his own, and yes, their little quirks as well. One is a constant barker and has a need to say "hello" to any adult, child or dog that passes by our home. The other is a tree climber believe it or not and refuses to have his nails clipped or touched. So we are anxiously awaiting a show that deals with these two issues and how you deal with it.
Also, we saw a recent show of your dealing with a dog that refused to walk on slippery wood floors. At the time, you said to the owner, there is nothing for the dog to fear---well, I think that may not be so in every case. For example: A relative of ours has an older 15 year old beagle who had developed artritis in his front legs. In addition, the pads on his paws are extremely smooth. This prevents him from gripping properly, I do suppose. In other words, he has trouble shifting his body weight from one leg to another and becomes of balance and off center. Because of this, he will sometimes slip and fall down on slippery surfaces and prefers rugs or carpets overy slippery wood or vinyl. When he does fall his front legs tend to spread out and he must pull or tear some ligaments because he will yelp out in pain and for days or weeks after such a fall.
Interesting show!
I have debated writing you, I have smooth fox terriers and can not walk them in the manner you show (which I understand) can you give me any insights. Does the fact that they are front indepedntent animals have any thing to with my frustrations? When they go in the show ring they present their selfs as they should.
My friends just got a dog about two weeks ago, that is an estimated 6 years old, from animal control (the pound). He appears to be some sort of collie/border collie type of mix. Apparently, he was abused by his last owners because he seems to have a great deal of fear. He follows my friend's mom around from room to room and becomes very upset when she leaves for any length of time, chewing up a library book, having "accidents" on the carpets. I have been going over to visit once or twice a week, just to see how things are going. I bring him toys, pet him. Well, tonight, I brought him a peanut butter flavored doggie bone for him to chew on. He took it from me very pensively. A little later, it was behind him near the wall, and I thought I would reach over him to get it and hand it to him. Mistake on my part. The dog perceived my movements as a threat, and barked (the first anyone has heard him bark since they got him) and bit my upper arm at the same time. Now, I have puncture marks, with puffiness and bruising on my arm, and it hurts. My friend's mother was very sorry to me, but then she was holding and petting the dog trying to comfort it. I realize that Cesar is most likely not going to respond directly to this posting, but any input I could get on this would be appreciated.

I am sorry to learn about your physical pain, Teresa. From listening to a few of Caesar's shows PLUS my own experience with our dogs, in order to correct this problem is going to take team work. Firstly, as Ceasar suggest, dog's live in the now, so that past abusiveness can be corrected. Secondly, your friend made a big mistake by comforting the dog because the dog now has the control and dominance.
Third, we have one beagle who does not eat his treats when we give it to him. Instead he has a natural need to HIDE THEM. If we allow him to do that, whenever his brother beagle or another visiting beagle comes within 3 feet of it he will growl, lunge and *used to* goes into an attack mode--but only with other animals; never with humans.
So one of the easiest solutions is to make sure the dog eats the treat and not hide it; because if they hide it they will GUARD it with their life (if that is what they were used to doing previously or if they had to fight and fend for themselves with their previous owner); they being the territorial creatures that they are. In other words, they are not just being possessive of the item but of the place. To prevent this from happening in the future, *you* must dominate the room the minute you walk in. Easier said then done if it is a friends home and not yours. Especially troubling is the fact that your friend took sides and rewarded the animal for utterly BAD behavior. In in my opinion, both need to be corrected. So if your friend does not become a willing partner (which they should do); best to stay away until YOU learn how to handle yourself around this animal.
In the shorter solution: Two or more people may be required. First make sure the dog is on a leash and not able to slip out of its collar. One person holds the dog to control it. Under ideal circumstances, this would be the pack leader; but in this instance, the person who places the treat is also.
Put the food down on the ground---BUT---DO NOT ALLOW THE DOG ACCESS TO IT. They may see it, but not get close enough to smell it, and not go near it. The minute they attempt to do so, correct it the way Caser does. For example, a tug on the lead, the shuush sound or a human bite by brisky poking the dog with your curled fingers. Not to hurt but to simply get the dogs attention away from the food so that it does not fixate on it. And never, never give a dog a treat or reward when they have not worked for it. Dogs like a challenge. They will also associate the the food with what they were doing and within 2-5 minutes of that activity. So if you are still reading this Teresa; it is important that you not walk into your friend's home, and give the dog a bisquet not knowing what that dog had been doing before you walked in. If you do, you might be setting yourself up for a rude awakening. So best to walk into your frinds home, .... observe the dog for 15 minutes or so, and then, if you are so inclined give a treat, but only if the dog works for something. But never give a treat just because, or because you feel sorry for this animal, thinking, oh, he was an abused animal so I have to TREAT him well; or thinking, oh, how cute, how cuddly. No no no... those are human traits. But dogs.... they understand RESPECT. So get this dog to respect you. Make yourself assertative and deserving of it. IOW, that bisquet is *yours* and you should be guarding it, and not the other way around---see.
Disclaimer: All of the above written by a non professional. So may I suggest that you also await a reply from the Dog Whisper. At least watch some of his shows to see that human psychology is as much a part of training people as it is to rehabilitate dogs.

Dear Cesar,
I just wanted to drop by and tell you how big of an inspiration you've been to me and how much I enjoy your shows and books. It is a dream of mine to meet you someday! I've tried to stay UTD with your shows and news as well as I can! I reside in Ohio with my Saint Bernard and I'm turning 18 in Oct of '06 and plan on going to college to study Canine Pshycology. Please know that you are my hero and hope you never stop helping dogs train their humans.
Your forever fan,
Tiffany

Can anyone tell me where Cesar bought his skates? I have never seen anything like them and would be interested in purchasing a pair. Love the show!!
To I need help now: Put her in a crate when you are not there. But leave her more than four hours at a time, start her out slowly, 15 minutes leave the house when she is in the crate. Build up your time. When you feed her take her outside in the area you want her to relieve herself and walk her until she goes. Most dogs want to go shortly after a meal. She can't go all other the house if she is contained in a small area. Get a book on crate training. It's not cruel if you intoduce it correctly.
I absolutely LOVE your show! Recently, I saw you train a lab to not jump into the pool. I have two Airedales (male) and they love to run in the pool but only as far as their chest (it is a "beach entry" pool) I cannot get them to go any further. They WANT to but as soon as they get to the edge, they reach out with their paw but won't come any further. I read somewhere that they are bred for water. Is there a way I can get them to come in the pool?

I have a standard schnauzer. I've yet to see Cesar interact w/this breed. Anyway, first male dog I've owned and I guess the first dog to disrespect me. If that is truly what is going on. Dog goes for walks and is great. Bad attention span. Is calm submissive when put in that situation. Appears to be respectful "but" (like everyone else)likes to peeeee on my chair in the livingroom. My wife & I have been using Ceasar's methods 8 months and are true believers. However, can't seem to get Nicholas to quit peeing on my chair leg. Open to suggestions or comments. Thanks.

I have a pair of Chocolate Labs who are destroying our yard! They are 14 months old and we really thought they'd be grown out of their chewing and digging by now but they continue. Keeping them in their dog kennel only seems to aggravate the behavior. Our problem is that Cesar (our dog's name) jumps up on us constantly when we go out to feed him or play with him. I have tried "kneeing him" like I have been trained to do when I trained my other dogs. But he only thinks I am playing with him and continues to jump even more and then play bite at my knees. I have a neck injury and back injury and it is hard for me to hold him on a leash to try to stop him from jumping. Plz help !!! Deb

Cesar:
I have 2 dauschunds a female and male. I also have a new schnauzer male puppy. We replaced the schnauzer because a vendor came on our property without permission and left the gate open and Rudy ran out and God forbid got hit by a car. Please tell people on your show not to do this, it was obvious we had pets we had toys all over the yard. You need to desperately remind people like utility companies whomever come on to peoples properties to be respectful and to close the gate. I wrote and article in the paper and it was published. I too also have trouble with dauschunds peeing in the house. I treat them in a pecking order because if I don't the older one will get upset and pee somewhere in the house. Also, the female dauschund will get excited when we have been gone and when we get her out of her crate she piddles on the floor as if she's telling us she's harmless. I don't get it, but I sure keep my shampooer close. What causes this?
