Are Dogs Natural Predators
Here in the United States, we often refer to our dogs as our children, our brothers and sisters, and even our soulmates! So if they ever display severe aggression towards another animal, we're shocked, sad, or may even feel betrayed. We think of that dog as a "bad seed."
My French bulldog Scarlett was once very animal aggressive. She once severely injured a Chihuahua and maimed a pet rabbit. Her previous owners were aghast--if a person committed these acts, they would have been sent to prison. However, after her rehabilitation, she is now my loyal companion and I take her everywhere. She helps me rehabilitate other dogs.
The truth is we tend to forget that dogs are natural predators; that is why so many dogs have the desire to hunt and we need to remember that when we bring the dog into our homes and families. It's up to us to be strong and consistent pack leaders who set very clear rules and boundaries. Good pack leaders make those rules clear from the beginning, before things get out of control. It's fine for him to run and retrieve a tennis ball, after all, that predatory energy must be released somewhere. However, it's not fine for him to run and retrieve the family cat.

Hi Cesar,
I love your show. When are you coming to south Florida?
I'm ordering your DVD. Can I ask your advise on something ...
My 6 month old MS which we are still potty trainig has developed a nasty habit he knows he can't potty in the house , but I've caught him eating his evidence. Yes eating his feces two times I've caught him. yuk.... What should I do. I've tried giving him a piece of pinneapple everyday which is suppose to make that least appealing to him. Not working well. He only eats it inside the house he doesn't have a chance outside because I pick it up right away. I hope you address this behavior in any up coming show or on your DVD.
I"m afarid this will harm him with time if I let it go to long. HELP!!!///
In response to Marilyn's problem with her puppy eating feces, I think she might want to talk to a vet since there is a disclaimer on the main blog page stating that Cesar is not available to answer individual questions.
There is also a lot of information regarding this problem available right on the net. I researched it when I had an adult dog who occasionally snacked on my cat's litter box leftovers.
I found information indicating that the problem may be caused by the feeding of high protein, low residue food, irregular feeding schedules, feeding inadequate amounts of food, an under-stimulating environment, and/or inadequate attention or supervision.
It's really not an unusual behavior in puppies and has nothing to do with the dog "hiding the evidence" from humans. Most puppies will outgrow the behavior just as toddlers eventually stop sucking their thumbs. In the case of my adult dog, I found changing my cat's diet stopped the problem. Basically, the cat was eating a rich diet that he wasn't fully digesting and absorbing and as a result, his feces actually tasted good to the dog since he was for the most part passing the food in its original state.
In comment to Cesar's original post on this date regarding whether or not dogs are natural predators, I am constantly amazed that people somehow "forget" that, of course, dogs have natural predatory instincts. Bringing a pet into your home and giving it a cute name doesn't change inborn instincts. Imagine if the tables were turned and dogs were the ones who adopted us and kept us as pets. They surely wouldn't try to adapt their behavior to accomodate ours...they would very quickly take the lead and establish the rules despite any fondness they might feel.
HI
I think that you are amazing. Such a gift you have.
I have a blended family. My female shepard who is 4, My spca hound who is 4 and My husbands 7 yr old female lab/chow mix. Since we have moved in together the lab and shepard have bloody battles every time they are near each other. I have consulted with other trainers and they say I must let them fight it out. Well I am afraid if I do that one will die. I keep them seperate, I just wish I could help them to get along. Any suggestions?
Fighting in Sacramento.
Cesar,
You emphasize the value of positive reinforcement on your show, so we are providing some here for you. We LOVE the fact that you clearly have an innate knowledge of your personal color palette. Many TV personalities don’t get that certain colors make you look fabulous while other colors make you look like a dog pile … but you obviously do. Those vivid blues, purples, true red, navy and charcoal gray you’re sporting in Season 2 are fabulous. And a person of your coloring can only wear one yellow — medium lemon — which you demonstrated so well in the “Daisy” episode. Can’t wait to see you in shocking pink, black-and-white, and a vibrant emerald green. Keep it up, and keep staying far away from browns, golds and orange (you’re not a redhead!).
Woof,
Robyn & Eileen
P.S. The work you do with the dogs? Good stuff.
I do think people forget a dog's natural prey drive. For a bored dog, this can be disasterous.
Unfortunately, I had to witness a very sad situation with a dog having to be put down due to his owners refusal to provide exercise, boundries, and leadership. These folks believed a dog should be loved, spoiled, and overindulged to the point of such inbalance, that his only joy and challenge, was to break out of their fenced backyard and kill their neighbor's animals. They absolutely refused to listen to anyone about where their dog was headed. This dog was "loved" to death. Their other dog is being "loved" to death with food. Two years old, and already very obese.
When I brought Tia home from the shelter, she was introduced to the rest of the "pack" on my mini-farm, by staying behind me as I exchanged greetings with the ducks, chickens, and our bunny. I stayed in between her and the other animals at all times, until she got the message. I've never had a problem with her around other anumals because she knows it is not allowed.
Loving an animal is doing what's best for them, not what makes us feel "good" in our moment of self-indulgence.
Deb
Thanks for the reminder! Our dog, Senji, gets rough when playing with our 4 year old. She has tackled our little girl and bites her clothing. I can see now that besides the daily walks (something else we've stepped up on b/c of watching Dog Whisperer), we need to throw the tennis ball around some-- but on our terms as pack leaders.
Trish, I have the same problem, three dogs, two of them fight each time they get together. I have kept them separate since last May, it's working most of the time, but mistakes happens. We had a fight this morning, when Blacke charged and opened the gate. I was told that I should let them fight too, but it is too scary. They used to be best friends.
Cesar, please, can you make more shows on this subject? I loved the one with agressive Alice, I wish there were more, because it is such a dangerous and scary thing.
I am struggling with the same problem (2 boxer that fight). Cesar seems to be able to solve ANY problem, I am desperate for an episode on this issue. I don't believe letting them "fight it out" is the best policy, everything I have read says obedience train, obedience train, obedience train (You need to teach them that YOU are top dog and you don't allow fighting), and I have done/am doing that, and it did help quite a bit at first, but they are back to their old ways and fighting again and I am just at wits. Both are rescues and we adore them and can't bear to give them up. I don't know what else to do but to keep them separate? WHEN oh WHEN are you coming to South Florida?!
I would also love to know if Cesar will ever come to South Florida. I have an 8 year old mlae Boxer and I adopted a 3 legged lab/hound mix..her background is shady. The shelter said she was attacked by an alligator and all of her puppies were killed as well. The leg was cut off at the knee bone and the vet says it was something tramatic that happened. I tend to think she was used as a bait dog for pit bull fighting. She gets along well with the boxer and has been very good understanding her limitations and leadership roles. Our big problem is she doesn't like people of color, bikes and when we walk her she becomes extremely agressive when she sees another dog...one time she even turned back at me for holding her back although she did not touch me. I am very worried about this as I don't want her to hurt someone else's dog or for another dog to hurt her. My thoughts is that it is fear agresssion. Cesar, we are following your techniques and are grateful that she has come so far but this is worrisome and I am too nervous to introduce her to other dogs (and of course she senses this). I will continue to watch your show as it is something every dog owner should be required to watch!
Thanks for all you do!
I have had two Miniature Pinschers, one dead, and one living with us. Min Pins were used for vermin hunting. Boy, it shows in what they do. The one that passed a few years ago was not really athletic, being bred at an awful puppy mill. However, she waited and waited and waited for about 30 minutes in front of where a mouse was hiding (we once lived in a house where there were mice) and finally caught one. She did not know what to do with it once she caught it and let it go.
The one that we have now is really athletic. Once we went to our son's baseball game and I was walking her on a field. Out of the blue, she caught a field mouse in her mouth. She would not have let it go if I had not said "leave it".
I find it rather strange that some people think it is awful that dogs have this instinct. I think the instinct should be directed to the right direction. I let my dog hunt crickets in our basement. She has fun and I can get rid of crickets. We both win!!
I have a problem with my 10 month old Lab/Retriever{I was told recently that she has chow in her too,} whenever we go for walks. She does fine until she sees other dogs and cats and then she goes absolutely beserk. She starts biting on her leash and yelping like I just nearly beat her to death. I've been watching Ceasar's shows and trying to implement what he suggests. She's recently been through alot!! We adopted her from the pound so naturally they had her spayed. She became ill and we found out she had parvo so she's been recovering from that. She sits and stays when I command her to in the home, but outside?, forget it!!! I don't know what I'm doing wrong. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. Thanks, T.Roberts
Cesar, I just finished watching your episode with a dog agressive lab mix (wearing a gentle leader). As usual, I was impressed with your magic! I having been working with my dog who developed dog aggression after she had been ambushed twice by an unleased neighborhood dog. I noticed that you did not use a food and verbal reward when the lab ignored the other dog(s)and focused on you. Obviously, it works!! Can you explain why you do this? I usually say "Leave it", and when she focuses on me, I give her a tiny food reward. But, I would prefer that she focus on me because I am the pack leader, not because she gets a reward. I am learning sooo much from your show!
We kept a friend's 12 year-old mixed breed for a weekend and our sweet 8 month-old shih-tzu terrorized her the entire time. The older dog is 12 and didn't want to be bothered by an active puppy. We're crate training our dog and didn't want to use the crate for disciple but what should I do to help him adjust to being around other animals when they come over? I'm desperate!!Thanks so much--JM Jones P.S. He has been neutered for a month now.

I currently have two MinPins. A female which is 1-1/2 yrs old and a male who is 6 months old. Both are in Obedience classes. My problem is that my female gets very nippy at all the othere BIG dogs in class. She is fine with the smaller dogs but she will just go after the big ones.
I am working on correcting her behavior, but what I am doing doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions???
Thank you
I have a 7 month old Yellow Lab. She is such a wonderful dog with everything...except for when she comes in contact with other dogs or people. She rears up and does everything she can to get to them! I know she only wants to play but there are small children and smaller dogs who live near us and I'm afraid that she will accidently hurt them. I do everything I can to hold her back but she is so strong that I'm afraid if I don't stop this behavior, I won't be able to stop her one day. I've tried just snapping her collar at the first sign of interest in another dog or person but it is not helping.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Lorri,
When you are with the female at your training place with all the other dogs(On a leash) and she tries to nip at another dog say a "shoosh" sound and make a quick tug on the leash(the way Cesar does)Make sure she is not fixated on the other dog too. I think this will help.
~Chantel
Jessica,
When you are walking with your lab and you see a dog or human, stay calm and pretend they are not there. Your dog can read your emosions. If you stay calm and walk with your dog to your side it should help(you should be walking your dog the way Cesar shows, dog beside you not in front). Also when your dog starts to show the least bit of interest and resistance give a quick tug on the leash (away from the dog or person) and give a quick "shoosh" sound it will direct her away from them. If you watched the most reasent Dog Whisperer, the first dog he helps, the one crazy about other animals. He uses the tecnic above, that's where I got it from. It should help sence Cesar is a genious, even though I might not have explained it very well. Good luck! :)

I have a eight week old female boxer, she seems to be very prey driven. she came from a litter of sixteen . I have not had her week. I also have a 10 year old poodle mix the poodle attacks her when she has had enough, or chews our belonings the boxer does back down from her, for now , I have tryed separating them but the pup howls when crated, then gets agressive to poodle because she is not crated. The boxer corners the cat I,m afraid she will hurt her , if I crate I get complaints from the neighbor, so I have been leaving the two dogs together, the cat has a cat tree in which to climb , but also teases the dog into chasing her and she goes to a corner behind a door the the dog easily corners her.I have been stern and reinforcing her but she is only a pup, but very stubron, she seems to prefer my 13 year old son over me , she is dileberatly ignores me, once she settles down out of what I call the terible horrors which lasts about an hour of racing around to burnoff energy she is fine. the vet does not want me walking her until she gets her second shot, will she settle down as she gats older? The miniture poodle has her under control for now in fact the boxer seems scared of her , but as the boxer gets bigger this may change , the poodle is a spayed feamale , we had a 12 year old lab that had passed away the poodle was dominate over her two, it seems thst she is correcting the boxer for silly behavior that she finds unacceptable , in fact the boxer was chewing a visitors coat and the poodle scolded her for it , should I separate them? They seem to get along otherwise and look for one another and even want to sleep to gether
I live with two APBT dogs. Kato, 4yrs, is referred to as the king of dogs by people who know him. He is great and I think well balanced in most ways. He insists on being the pack leader when we all go walking and will literally turn blue in the face and choke himself to pull on the leash. We've tried the choke collar, I would love to run with him but at 65lbs, it can be difficult when he spots something worth running after! He was gotten from SPCA and his weeknesses are squirles and kitties.
Then there is Duke who is now just over a year old. Last week we left both dogs at my fiance's parent's house while we went out of town. We have never left them before, at least one of us is home with them every evening. The parents own a beautful pappillon, who now has a broken leg and puncture wounds thanks to Duke. I have seen him be dog-aggressive at our house, with the intent to dominate, but never has he attacked a dog. I admit, Duke has not been socialized nearly as much as he should have been his first year. I have read that early sociallization is critical for this breed. Duke gets extremely stressed out when we go anywhere in the car. We are talking major anxiety. The very day we took him from the breeder he vomited and had a bowel movement in the car! Its so bad that we could hardly drive the mile distance to the vet's office without an incedent. Even if the car is off he still salivates, blows bubbles and hates everything about it. His doctor said to try Dramamine, that he would eventually grow out of it, but the drug doesn't work and I still cannot take him anywhere with me. So he always has to stay home while his brother gets to go places. I love this dog, he is truely a beautiful sweetie who is socially deprived. How can I get him socialized and to be nice to smaller dogs, I worry about having this guy around children.

I just adopted a rescued, 2 l/2 year old Female Bichon Frise who had been abused by the owner's children. The children threw stones at her and hit her, causing her to become terrified of children. When a child comes into my presence when she is with me, her entire body trembles; and she growls and barks. Can anyone suggest anything that I may be able to do to try and bring this poor dog around? I know it is going to take time; but I need suggestions from knowledgeable canine fanciers.
Our 10 month old Lab/Husky/Shepard mix has become very protective of our family. When friends come over she barks viciously and will try to bite them. What can we do about this aggresion? I am so worried she is really going to hurt someone. My kids will just die if we have to get rid of her.
Cathy
My 2 yr old Black Std. Poodle, Baloo is very agressive when it comes to his two brothers Lewis & Blackie and one sister Violet, he attacks the door trying to get to them, his normal behaviour is timid and scared of other dogs outside of my household but he seems to hate these three in our home. He get along with his sister Bambi and with our collie Isabelle, but not them we keep them seperate. At my home we have three seperate fenced in areas to keep them apart. I have even emailed Oprah to see if she can get me some guidence.

I am finally ready to replace a dear siamese cat i lost years ago. i have applied to the siames rescue. problem? JEALOUS dog that is also chase oriented. He is not dominent in the household so i am sure i can correct him but i would really like to make the introduction as easy for both as possible. suggestions? thanks, LOVE the show.
Cesar,
I just finished watching your show that focused on a rescued Jin-dee or Jin-do korean dog and that he would be fine outside but would'nt be submissive inside. You amazed both me and my sister with how you took care of the problem immediatly. Well, I have a black lab that's just under a year old. She is very, very strong & head strong. There are two other dogs at the house, one she does'nt mess with Bogart, & one she just wants to dominate almost to the point of tearing Vinny apart. I just moved in no more than 2 months ago and it's getting worse. She won't do anything when there by themselves but when you start paying attn. to Vinny or scold him she attacks him immediatly no matter if it's me saying anything or my roommates. Vinny is a little smaller & younger and loves to play with layla, but Layla still wants to dominate. Bogart is the oldest and largest of the dogs but is the most submissive, and I can't figure out why Layla attacks vinny and not Bo and how to keep here from attacking vinny so I don't have to move again. Please help, I'm starting to go insane because i don't know what to do
I have a 100-pound, 2 year old female German Shepherd.
When we go for walks, much like the topic of this blog posting, she walks me instead of the other way around. I try to pull her back and make the "psst" sound I often hear Cesar use to get her attention. Still she continues to pull on the leash causing it to be constantly tight. I make sure I remain calm understanding she can read me. How can I teach her to walk beside or behind me without dragging me? What am I doing wrong?
Please advise.
Thank you!
Cesar is the best! I have used the mind set he teaches to help manage my 90 pound rott-golden mix. It's amazing how well calm assertive and be the leader ideas work.
When Teddy is in the back yard, he catches quail. I didn't believe it was him until I saw him with a bloody wing in his mouth. I really don't like this behavior. I worry he will forget himself and chomp his toy fox terrier housemate. He's not aggressive about food (well, not to me anyway), toys, play, balls, bones or anything. The birds are wild and I can't figure out how to teach him not to hunt them.
I have a jack russel 11 months old and my son has a beagle 11 months old. He's moving out and doesn't want to take his dog with him, but his x girlfriend wants the dog. What is the proper way to seperate the dogs to different homes so that they are not sad all the time?
Cesar's demonstrations are amazing. It's interesting that he does all this without treats or lavish praise, as my doggy school and other pros have recommended using treats for reward.
I am waiting for him to tell me how to remonstrate my female border collie-lab mix (fresh from a shelter) that is a doll inside the house. We call her the other cat b/c she cuddles and cleans the kids. She sits/stays/down, even learns new tricks from the children in a matter of minutes. She even has great table manners.
Outside she can be a terror - chasing after the children, biting their arms and pulling them down. She has even growled alongside my son when he was running down the drive. I would love for her to play nicely with other dogs and my children and leave my poor cat alone, but she seems to want to control anything smaller than herself.
We have tried yummy treats whenever the cat walks through the room, tried yanking the choke when she goes after the cat (she won't go after the cat unless he is running, like the children), but she is just fixated. I am afraid of what she will do if she ever catches the cat.
I think we got lucky with this shelter dog, and there's no way the kids will part with her now, but I cannot have a dog that bites kids, no matter if it's just a little firm. Any advice would be appreciated for this first time dog owner.
Pearl,
I had a similar situation. When we got our first dog, chow mix, she was only 5 weeks old. Someone found her wondering on the road with her brother. She growled at the man who found her, so he kept the boy, and we took Blackie. Soon we found out that she didn't like kids. Especially my neighbor daughter. She bit her twice, and had to be quarantined at the vet. She bit my kids too, we all have bite marks from her. I think if she was in another house, she would be put to sleep because of her behavior. But we love her very much, and she could be a sweet girl too.
Then, when she was almost two, we decided to get a friend for her. We adopted another girl from the Humane Society. Since that moment Blackie never got agresive with my kids. There was never any more bites. It was three years ago, and no agression since then. She still growls occasionaly, but will not bite.
Cesar & Friends,
Your show "The Dog Whisperer" is by far the most educational dog show that has ever been produced! I have recorded every episode, and thanks to you, I was fully prepared before I rescued my 2 year old Jack Russell Terrier, named Max. This was a truly a blessing as his previous owners, though friends of ours, had made several mistakes. First off they didn’t know the breed until they had him and by nature he is a very hyper and dominant dog. They did take him to obedience classes, but never had “time” to enforce anything or exercise him. Consequently, they were going to take him to the Humane Society because he “took over the house, ran them out of their bed, and was just too wild.” I told them to bring him to me and I’d find him a good home. The first week was a challenge as he struggled to enforce his dominance, but thanks to Cesar, I knew what to expect, what to do and in the process, I fell in love with him. In the 3 months that I have had him, he now happily sleeps in his kennel beside my bed, gets along with my 2 inside cats, has remembered his obedient training, and is learning to jump through a hula-hoop! My husband is planning an agility course in our backyard for him, so soon we will be training that. Now, my friends want him back but I found him a good home – mine!
There is one problem that I can’t seem to correct. The area that we live in is zoned for agriculture, therefore there is no leash law. Max is always on his leash when outside of our yard, however, there are about 10 dogs and about 15 chickens and roosters in our area that just run free. The chickens and roosters seem to love my front yard. This makes it very difficult to walk Max outside of my back yard. Following Cesar’s guidance from the show, I have been working with Max, but the problem is that the other dogs have claimed the road as theirs. They don’t want to move even for cars to pass. So when we walk they constantly charge us, some barking and snapping. We have tried talking to the owners of the other animals, but since they refuse to keep their animals penned up, the only option is teaching Max to leave them alone. How should I handle so many loose dogs at one time so that Max is completely secure and confident in me as his leader? As far as the chickens, Max just wants to chase them. How should I get him over this since, of course, they run away, which reinforces his behavior? I have tried using the “leave it” command, which does work any other time, but he goes ballistic wanting to chase the chickens and play with the dogs! If anyone has had a similar situation or advice, I’d love to hear it! Thanks!
Calmly and assertively awaiting Cesar’s next episode,
Susan
Just a short note to thank you for having a show that truly educates dog owners. We are new "parents" of a 15 month old German Shepherd name Ginger. A rescue dog that found us and has one health issues (demodectic mange) but we are hopeful and we are doing (and our vet) our best to cure this "evil" mange. By following your advice (we've been watching you for a long time now even before Ginger came to our lives), we are so amazed by how easy it is to handle a dog. At the park when we see other dog owners struggling with their dogs (pulling, barking, etc.), your name just automaticaly comes in mind: "They need to watch Cesar's show."
Thank you! Salamat! Gracias!

I fostered a dog with demodex mange from the humane society clinic, where i worked at the time, she was the for a year living in the clinic. my boss and the vet techs there had her on many different things at different times to try and clear this skin problem, but her skin was always flared up and pink. finally i was asked to take her home and care for her in a stress free environment. so, i took her home and started giving her garlic tabs for dogs as a daily suppliment on top of her cephalexin and it was a matter of 2 weeks and i brought her back to work with me and the vet techs and my boss could not beleive how quickly her demodex had cleared up, and her fur had started to grow back in the places where her skin was raw and pink, and her skin was a normal tone. please try this for your dog, they usually like the taste of garlic anyways, and i have no doubt that it will only help. you can get garlic tabs at any pet food store or health food store. i can only promise you that you will be amazed with your dogs change in skin conditions.
Hey, i just got through watching one of your episodes about aggrestion, and well i have a lab/dalmation/white english/rottweiler mix, yea some kind of mix, and anyways, he is a great dog towards people, he has never been aggresive towards and person at all, but when it comes to other dogs, he goes after them to kill them, there is not run up to the dog and try and show his dominance, he just goes and jumps straight on them, and i hate him to be like that because, we have to keep him chained up all the time and he never acted like this untile he turned about 3 years old, and not to long ago, he killed a Jack Russel for no reason just ran after him and grabed him and shuck him a couple times and he was dead and i just dont know what to. i need some advice, please help.
I have a been a dog training breeder and handler since I was 12 years old. I have worked with every kind of sporting dog and personally owned 8 english setters and 1 cocker. I now have a Chihuahua named Norman and everything I thought I knew about dogs has gone out the window. I need help!! he is GREAT with ME and only ME he bites he growls he barks and nothing nothing I have doen works!!!
I just moved to LA I forgot to mention Norman has a brother who is a Bobcat hybred whcih he actually does get along with we got them both a month apart when they were only 8 weeks old. i did that right but I need help finding resources in the valley, dog sitter and trainers so if anyone reads this and can point me in the right direction that would be greatly appreciated. Norman (chihuahau) and Monty ( the bobcat hybred) would make a great show series!!! I so admire what Cesar does and I just wish all my training worked a on the chihauhau I reaspect how Cesar can handle all breeds the same becuase I am at a loss i thought mu knowledge would crossover.. Silly me!
Hello Cesar,
I love watching your show. I have two Jack Russell Terrier's (Dash 11 months old) and (Bevo 9 months) Dash is the one that makes a growling noice when Bevo gets near him he seems to be in control at all times, as soon as Bevo hears that noice it does something to Bevo that makes him attack Dash and a fight breaks out, immediately I put them in timeout in their crates. Also, they go nuts when I have a sprinkler on or when I am watering the yard with the water hose, they become uncontrollable. Please advice. I invite you to come to Texas, it's really funny to see how they react, but I need help with them. By the way they are excellent hunters, they have caught 13 ground hogs/moles all around my yard.
Keep up your excellent work,

My Max is a chow hound. I got him when he was 8 weeks old. Even then he wanted to eat all the time. I could walk him then, but I have a back problem that won't allow me to walk very far, so we are both getting pretty hefty, How ca I get him full? He will be 6 in June. He is a Yorkie Pom that is 22 lbs. At a good weight he is 16-17 lbs. He didn't turn out as small as they promised. But I love him very very much. What am I to do? BJ
We just adopted 2 dalmation puppies. We are trying to get them to urinate/bowel movements in one loctation, instead of all over the yard. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks
Hi, I am learning so much from your show, Ilove it!!
I, like Susan posted above have the same problem with loose dogs running at us on walks. I have a 128lb king shepherd who cannot abide these dogs running at her. We went to puppy classes and were not allowed to let the dogs touch eachother. ?? I know she feels she has to be in charge when these dogs come at us. I do get angry and fearful, not at my dog so much as toward the owners of the other dogs, who continously call their dogs, and get ignored by them, and tell us 'Oh, he won"t bother her! When she is obviously VERY bothered. I have manage each time to get away before one acually makes contact with us, but I live in fear of what will happen if one finally does. I know I need to confrnt this problem to fix it but I don't know what to do during the confrontation . I hope you will have a show concerning this sometime soon. I never miss one so I would be certain to see it :-) . thank you again, Karen
Dear Dot,
The best thing that we have found about getting our dogs to potty in the same spot is: 1) Anytime they potty elsewhere take it to the spot where you want them to go and let them smell it and 2.) Carry them to the spot that you would like them to use insistint that you stay there until they finish. If too big to carry then leash them and promptly take them to their spot.
Good luck,
Susan
Hello,
I have a Wonderful 4 year old yellow lab named chewbacca. He is great in every way except walking on lead. He pulls like a madman and is strong as an ox. I am 6'3 and he drags me all over the place. We adopted him from a couple in town so he was not from abused home. They just walked him on longer leads. I tried popping his lead( I went through obedience with my old dog as a puppy) but it does not even phase him. I was considering another type of collar ( pronged ,or the one that goes over the snout as well)
Any suggestions?

I have a 13 wk old Pitbull pup that is a great dog except when I walk him he likes to have his leash in his mouth. Then if I just ignore him and continue to walk it turns into a tug of war. I've tried to take him outside without a leash and he does really well, but with his breed I'd rather keep him on a leash. I've never had a dog do this, any advice?
Hello. I recently found a 2 year old Sheppherd/Collie/Rott. mix and I am in desperate need of some help with his terrible habbit. He jumps 6 foot fences!! We have him as an inside dog, but we cannot even let him outside to go potty without a leash on or he just hops right over the fence and runs like the wind. When you attempt to get him back he acts like it is a game of chase. If you get near him he runs, if you drive the other way he runs after you until you look at him. All I know about him is that in his past home he was always chained up until he broke free and then would roam for 2 or 3 days at a time until he got hungry. Other than that he is a great dog, but this problem must be eliminated if I am going to keep him because I have 2 other dogs to attend to. Thanks a million!!!
HELLLP!!! my silly basset hound won"t stop whining, trying to dash out the doors and most importantly jump on the couch when there is a visitor please give me some advice!

Have a 6.5 yr old toy poddle since she was 3 weeks old, spoiled, but will become very agressive to my husband if sitting on couch with callie laying next to me with growl and jump up and not attack him but acts like she will .help!!!
This last Saturday my 6 pounder Fox Terrier, 11 years old, was viciously attack by the two females (one, Yorkie-Chi 11 pounds and the other a mut 28 pounds; 4 and 5 years old). It happened suddenly without warning. My poor guy is having a bad time at ER and looks horrible; probably will have a neurological problem in his rear leg. I can't figured out why it happened; they have been leaving just fine for years. Thanks God my husband could take away the Lab mix 60 pounds. Anybody has an explanation. We are afraid that it will happen again. Thanks!
Hi Cesar,
Fairly recently i got a bichon puppy who is a little over 3 months old. I also have a 10 year old chocolate lab who is very calm and loving. But since Toby(the new puppy) came into the home, Vegas (the chocolate lab)hasn't been the same. He growls at him all the time when he comes by him. Toby likes Vegas, but Vegas hates Toby. What do i do to make them like eachother?!!?

hello!!
we had adopted a shitsu (houdi) not even a yr ago, and a few months back adopted another shitsu (ori). when i walked houdi when he was the only dog he never barked at dogs, and now that ori is there we noticed he does. plus, ever since we got ori houdie has been growling at me, and in fact yesterday he bit my arm. its like he has multiple personality or something! i can tell when he will growl just be looking at his eyes, he looks really upset and as soon as i tough him he growls. i dont get it! can you please help us by giving us any advise you have, or a reason why he would act this way? we figure he might be a little jelous of ori. we are very concerned. thank you so much for your time. i look forward to an email from you soon.
I have 9 and a half month old golden retreiver that jumps on his hind legs when I turn on the seiling fan it is getting warmer and I need to put on the fans. WHAT SHOULD I DO, How do I stop this behavior. I look forward for an e-mail from you.
I have a 5 month old Golden Retriever. When I give him a bone he won't let you touch him until he is finished with it. If you, do he growls and nipped at me once. What can I do to stop this aggressive behavior?
We have a 4-year-old poodle who did not have an aggressive bone in her body until she had her first litter this past December. She was a gentle, attentive, loving mother while the puppies were nursing. She warned the other animals in the house one time to stay away from the puppies box and they all honored that warning and kept their distance.
But since she has weaned the puppies when they were about 5 weeks old she has become very aggressive, even attacking the other dogs/cats in the house very viscously (sp?) if she feels they are infringing on her space or her attention from us. She even attacks her puppies and our Old English Sheepdog! She will also growl and snap at us if we do anything she doesn’t like now. WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO HER??? Has anyone ever heard of this abrupt personality change following the birth of a litter? And what do we do to get our previous mild-mannered poodle back?
Thank you for any info/ advise anyone can offer.
Barbara
Well, my old Minituare Fox Terrier Rocky passed away 2 weeks ago. His liver was damaged in the fight and the antibiotics and pain killers did more damage. It was painful his departure, indeed. We will never know what really happened but now I see my other dogs differently but I love them all.

Hi,
My sister and I and our two 1 1/2 yr old puppies recently moved from Ohio to Indiana. They have always been inside dogs, but currently they have to be outside. They are showing severe signs of separation anxiety. They won't hardly even touch their food anymore, wining, barking and shaking. To top it all off, our female is due with her first litter of puppies in 2 1/2 weeks. Shd looks as though she's starting to lose some weight. We are really worried about them. Please help us!!
I have a Boxer that was attacked by a pitbull through a fence. He was bit above the nose and under the jaw. it seems after that incident he is less energetic and confident. He even saw a dog and whimpered and try to run the other opposite direction. Is there anything I can do to get back his self-esteem? Courage?
DOES ANYONE KNOW OF AN EXTREMELY DURABLE CRATE THAT A PITBULL COULDN'T GET OUT OF? HE IS LIKE HOUDINI. HE GETS OUT OF EVERYTHING. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
I have an 8-month -old Shih Tzu that is a very picky eater; I feel that he is not eating enough and is loosing weight, I have tried chaging his dog food twice, and I'm only giving it to him dry; I need help badly on his eating. I just took him to the groomers on Saturday, June 17th and she cut him all the way down to his skin I kid you not I'm very upset by this and truly feel that she has traumatized my son, know it's really hard to get him to eat unless I'm sitting on the floor with him and coasting him to eat. I need some suggestions on what to do.
Thank you
A scared mom!
Hi Cesar,
I have a Siberian husky, 5 1/2 yrs old, that was attacked by a Pitbull several months ago (3-4 months). Directly after the attack, she seemed unfazed when it came to other dogs. However, most dogs she met after the attack (75% at least), were aggressive towards her and tried to attack her, as if they could smell fear on her. Now she's petrified of any new dog (the dogs she knew prior to the attack she's fine with), even if the new dog is calm, obedient and wants to meet her, she backs up and tries to run the other way. She was even scared of an elderly greyhound yesterday! Please help, my dog used to be so friendly and fun loving, and now it seems like the life has been sucked out of her.

We have a boxer mix dog that snapped at a child tonight. He was lying on his side. The child came up to our dog from behind & reached accross him to pet his stomach. Our dog raised his head up & looked started, however, once he saw the child he layed his head back down on the floor. The little boy continued to pet him in the same way. Unexpectedly, our dog barked, growled horribly & snapped at him. He just barely nicked the child in his hairline. This could have been so much worse. I'm concerned that he will do this again and could really hurt a child or kill them. He has bitten me once while I was trying to break up a fight between he & my nephews alaskan malamute. He'a always been really freindly with kids & hasn't minded them at all, even if they played kind of rough with him. He's always been so gentle. He is dog aggressive & we can deal with that, however the fact that he may attack a child has us feeling like maybe we should move him to a home where there are no kids. Our boys are 11 & 14, so I'm not too worried about them. However, we have other kids here all the time. My vet told me after he bit me, that he will do it again. Should I be concerned that he may attack or bite a child that is visiting in our home? My plan at this point is to crate him anytime anyone visits. I just don't want to take any chances. He is a rescue dog, we've had him almost 2 years so all this has come as quite a shock to us. anyone know what we should expect in the future or have any suggestions? Would you give the dog up to a home that doesn't ever have kids around?
Thanks,
worried in Memphis, TN
We've rescued and live with many dogs and cats and recently 2 small mixed breed dogs killed a one of our own cats. We had the dogs for about 5 years, they were indoors with cats all that time and we never experienced a problem--we made very clear their place in the pack and are diligent about controlling even the slightest sign of aggression. Now, I don't feel I can trust these particular dogs, and my husband feels they can not be rehabilitated and should put down because they can not be trusted. I am torn as to what I should do. I have considered trying to find them another home with no cats, but with so many dogs needing homes, I am not sure what to do. What have others done who may have experienced this tragedy.
Hmm I love the idea behind this website, very unique.
Ich can mich an dich uberhaupt poker nicht errinern.jbb
I have a 3 year old 3 lb yorkie that is very agressive. No one can get around me at home when I am in bed. I would like to know if any of your dvd's contain a segment on agressive behavior. I really love my lil dog but it is really getting out of hand. Love your show.
