Actually,I made a mistake in my previous entry. Our Corgi died in April, we found out about his illness 6 weeks before that.

In my opinion, when we try to "replace" the beloved dog who had passed away with another one is an error. Specially when this new dog is very, very similar in face,complexion,way of look at your eyes. I losed my Bassett Hound long time ago, and he filled all those empty love spaces we had due to a broken family relationship. We decided not to buy another one never. Chester, our beloved one, will never born again. Thats the point.He was pretty unique, not to be replaced as a thing. The problem
is, why, sometimes, when we recall him due to a picture or a dream, sometimes we cry. We realize is a selfish reaction. so, is better not to have a dog again so better to have cats, birds, even a frog. The only thing that remains me of Chester is the dreams that I have, but knowing inside the dream he is deceased and resting at our own home. Now, our beloved ones are only cats.

Just a thought for some that might be in the position of having lost a beloved pet recently....what helped me when i lost my 2, was volunteering at an animal shelter...its what saved me actually, because for the time i was there i couldn't think about my loss, only the doggie face in front of me...it was live changing as well, and educational...dogs are more resilient than we think...(in most cases)...many people can't deal with being at an animal shelter, but dogs are so in the moment...the first day they arrive, for many it is traumatic, but when day 2 is exactly like the previous 24 hours, that's what makes them comfortable, a consistent routine. so it is harder on the people than the dogs, actually, with our emotions and imagination, which have no place there...
the other think i learned, even if you can only spend time with 1 dog, that is time the dog would not have otherwise gotten that day...shelter workers are stretched so thin, they and the dogs so appreciate any help given.
and it so helps the grieving process...
i did it for myself, and in the name of the 2 i lost.
i eventually did adopt as soon as i was in position to, but took several years before i didn't feel like i was betraying the 2 i loved...
at any rate - volunteering can be a help for those that have lost, on so many levels and for so many on the receiving end!!!

Is a good advice what you have experienced. Sometimes, I think about getting involved in an animal shelter, but I do know that i would suffer because the pain, physical or emotional of the animal, goes directly to my feelings. Recently, I healed a cat who came into my house near death. He had a terrible cut, inflamation and etc., but, praying and doing what i suppose I did good, this cat is now alive and near from me. The days of the cure process,almost a week and a half, the first thing which came into my mind when i awake was "the cat, the cat, I have to save his life". I got deeply involved, he was suffering and I suffered with him. Thanks God Frenkie is now almost healed, he only needs to be a kind of a Garfield. But when you know day by day what routine you will have, you forget about your pets lost or your own human pain. Care for the animals. Be a human shelter. Theres no need to be a vet. Its the force of Nature which guides you and tells you, somehow, what to do.

Although I may only be 12 years old, I have been watching your show for a while and I have applied your techniques to my dogs, Angel and Rosie, and even my pony, Huey. Being a competitive rider in the AA hunter jumper circuit, I am in high pressure situations. He used to get fast when I rode him and by watching your show I figured out that I wasn't being the leader at times and he didn't know what to do. Also, I used to hunch over and look down at the jump while I was riding and I figured out that that was affecting his behavior. And with my dogs, they used to pull on my mom and I when we went on walks. We figured out, by your advice on the show, that we weren't being the leader and that they scattered because of it.
Also, in my 6th grade class we train dogs to be service dogs. We are training a dog, Star, and he is afraid of people crowding around him or even coming near him. He backs away and we have to put our feet behind him so that he will not run off. What should we do about it? Would you be interested in coming down to our school and helping Star? Episode 4 in Kansas City aired 01/27/06. The story on the two great danes was cut. Did anyone else see that? Nat'l Geographic(?) spliced in an epsiode from the first season, with the redheaded "Cleopatra" Texas woman and her dog & husband? Does anybody know what happened with the great danes when Cesar showed up, and what the problem was, & the cure? Thanks! Any idea when the complete great dane story might air again??

The Great Dane episode was cut here too. I wondered what was going on. I would also love to see what happened in that situation.

Regarding Episode 4 and Buford/Daisy/Honey

It was a joy, and a little eerie to watch this episode as we also have two VERY bonded boxers, who are remarkably similar in many ways to Buford, Daisy and Honey. They look, act, and are treated alike (embarrassing as this is to admit)

I do not know if this is possible, but if the moderator of this board would consider passing along our email to Bonita, the owner of these dogs, we would be interested in corresponding with her about our shared love of these dogs, and the many similarities between us.

When our GSD Shandra died suddenly at 3 of mesenteric torsion, her lifepartner Krunch was inconsolable. They did everything together! Shandra came into our home when Krunch was a year old and they bonded instantly. We were devastated, to say the least; she was SO young and had been totally healthy up until that point. No inclination to the EPI that caused her torsion.
We waited a week before beginning to think of another friend for Krunch. He moped around SO much and kept looking for Shandra every time we opened the door to the yard, or took him for a ride. He would get so excited and then upon realizing that she was not comming home, slink off to a corner and put chin to floor.
It was about 2 or 3 weeks when Kizzy waltzed into our lives and Krunch was never the same again. INSTANT love. She was a 5 month old GSD bitch and he was her slave. He lived to the ripe old age of 10 (good lifetime for a GSD)and they spent every waking minute of that time in each others company. Kiz now has a new Krunch to keep her company and is absolutley devoted to him...its her SON!!!
We have a saying in the German Shepherd world...
"Anyone who thinks a dog has no soul, has not looked into the eyes of a German Shepherd".....

I have read much regarding grief and dog behavior, but I have not seen the issue that I am concerned with. We have 2 dogs: a 14 year old golden retriever mix (Kady) and a 2 1/2 year old lab shepherd mix (Annie). Annie kind of fell in our laps, thus her name "little orphan Annie." My concern is this: Annie absolutely ADORES Kady. We can't take Kady anywhere without Annie or Annie will howl and cry, like someone is ripping out her heart. It's pretty intense. Kady needs to go to the Vet every month for shots, and every time Annie goes into hysterics. We have taken Annie with us, hoping that would solve the issue, but the moment Kady is out of Annie's sight, Annie begins to "freak" ... We have tried to seperate them by taking one for a walk or car ride, but it hasn't seemed to help; whether Annie is taken or left, she still gets hysterical if Kady is not with her. The inevitable will come, and my sweet Kady will leave us. This will be devestating for us, but I'm more worried about Annie. I understand the pack mentality, and I am definitely "alpha dog" in our household, but I'm stumped on how to deal with this issue. Is there anything we can do to "soften the blow" when it does come???

I found out first hand how right you are when you state that animals grieve. My husband suffered a major heart attack and was hospitalized for a month while he underwent several extensive surgeries. We have a 3 year old Maltese who was (up until that event) a very well adjusted and trained pet. Since I was gone every day and she wasn't coming along, and since my husband wasn't returning every evening as usual, her normal routine was interupted. Although I had family and friends come in to care for her during the day, she felt the stress in the household and literally crashed. She became so depressed she stopped eating and dropped so much weight so quickly she could no longer stand. After 2 weeks at emergency care ungoing every test in the book, it was determined that she was malnutrioned and had dangerously low glucose levels because she was too depressed to eat. There were no physical causes of her condition! The magnitude of this was overwhelming for me. I now truly understand my total reponsibility as a pet owner. It's been a month and she has returned to the happy companion she always was. I was awe-struck that this little dog could experience this kind of emotion. Unlike a lot of people, I've always believed that our pets are attached to us for what we provide them and hugs and kisses were for my benefit. I always assumed she loved me for my food! So yes, I certainly do agree with you. Dogs grieve!

My Mother recently passed away and she had lived with us after my father passed away in 1997, until two years ago when she had to go into a nursing home. She had a poodle names RAGS that was her main concern of her life she always worried what would Rags do without her. I acsured her I would always take care of him. After the broken hit and surgery she did not remember RAGS, I took him to see her many times until it was to sad for him. He got ok. But two weeks before mother passed away the entire week rags motted around with the sadest look on his face, I even made a comment to my husband don't rags look sad to you. "He is never serious he said oh he' just woke up from a nap." The next week Mother went into the hospital she had not been ill and died in about a week or so. A day or so after her funeral rags started crying and whineing for two days and breathing heavy I took him to the vet nothing was wrong with him. During the time this was happening my young poodle would jump on him to fight with him. I had to separate the two of them, that had never happened before. He's OK now and seems to be doing great. We are spending alot of time with him. If you tell some people stories like this they think your nuts. I have always had many animals and I am a true animal lover.

Four years ago I had to put my Mandy our 9 year old golden to sleep. She left behing our 10 year old siberian husky. A week prior to her passing, Nanuk just gave up, he litterally was looking for a place to go and die. After mandy's death Nanuk would just cry and would not leave my side. I was devistated myself as she was my baby. The very next day after her passing we took Nanuk with us and brought home our little Maddison. She was a 9 week old golden retriever. This little girl had some really big shoes to fill and let me tell has she ever filled them. She has been such a blessing to all of our lives. Well 4 years have gone by now and on thursday 2-16-06 we had to put Nanuk to sleep. Because of maddison, nanuk had 4 more wonderful years. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about my mandy, but Maddison has got me thru everything. She has helped me to wake every morning and open up the day to the gift that it is. She has given to me "reason" for being happy, to love again, the desire for many things. Now I am faced with a huge responsibility. Maddison has lost her life mate. She is only 4 years old and has never been without her mate. She is very sad and when I look in her eyes I can see her heartbreak. My husband does not want to get another animal unless we have to. I have to ask myself "what is fair to her?" Am I enough for her? no, because I can't be with her every moment and she shouldn't have to rely on me. She is still somewhat of a puppy. Is it fair to expect her to go it alone? I believe that we never can replace anyone. But I also believe that our animals have loved us so unconditionally and that they want for us to love again. There should be no guilt to love another animal. The loss of a companion is extremely devistating, but I believe that the animal we have lost would grant us this wish to love again, because then they know that they were loved and missed and would want us to love again then to never love again at all. This woild be their wish and gift to us. I want Maddison to have a new life mate because I know that she does not want to be alone and frankly neither do I. God gives us so much ...love is one of those things... and in love some times we have to send our friends back home to him. They are our angels watching over all of us. Open your heart to a new angel because there is no guilt in loving!!!

My husband is a long haul truck driver, and gets pretty lonesome being on the road 4-8 weeks at a time. So we decided to get a dog to travel with him and keep him company. We thought that a fairly young dog would be better because he would be able to get used to the noise and so forth of the truck. A lady who raises pit bulls gave us a dog that belonged to a homeless family and they decided that they could not take care of him. She thought this dog to be approx. 1-1 1/2 yrs old. He is a great dog, very friendly, and my husband adores him, trouble is..... when my husband isnt inside the cab with him, he chews EVERYTHING. He has chew toys, and chew bones, but this doesnt seem to satisfy him. The last object he chewed was the remote to his Sirius Radio. Very disturbing to my husband. He puts the things up but the dog manages to find them. PLEASE help us to learn how to train him and break him of chewing things up. I hope you can help, and it will be greatly appreciated. I just came home from Cesar's Seminar in Kerrville, TX, and I want to tell everyone that it was worth every cent I paid and more. This man has more knowledge and common sense in his little finger than most "educated" animal experts do in their entire collective bodies. Anyway, I need help. I have a heartwrenching story. My dog has been taken to a "jail" and needs to be registered as a Dangerous Dog. He is a black lab, rottweiler, pit mix. He is very sweet (to his family) and very protective. Although he hasn't hurt anyone, our small town has convicted him as a Dangerous Dog and says he has no business in the neighborhood. Why or how can they do this if he hasn't hurt anyone. He is pretty much a convicted criminal for being a puppy...I am at my wits end as well as the rest of the family. Jake-Jake is a great family member and does not deserve this. Where he is being kept is quite horrible for him cause he doesn't understand why he can't come home. What do we do or what can we do? He can be reviewed in a year, if we can get him out, and prove he is no longer considered dangerous. We need serious help with this and don't know where to turn.
