Kid-Aggressive Canines
You may wonder why some dogs are very comfortable around adults, but exhibit aggressive behavior towards kids. The truth is that many dogs perceive children differently from the way they see adults. They move differently, walk differently, smell differently, and sound differently. It's in their nature to react to any energy that to them, seems unbalanced or unstable.
The reality is that most parents don't teach their children the correct way to act around dogs. We teach our kids that it's okay to get excited when they see a dog. Children often run to the dog and look him square in the eye, invading its physical space before the dog is ready. Remember, in their natural world, animals attack instability and excitement can be perceived by a dog as instability.
I often bring my sons Andre, 11, and Calvin, 7, on the job with me when dealing with a child-aggressive dog. Mind you, I'd never, ever put my kids in even a remotely dangerous situation. Any dog allowed near my boys has to be under my control. Growing up around my pack, my boys know that it's vital to always project calm, assertive energy when they are around animals. That's why Andre and Calvin are such assets to our family business! They also turned out to be valuable assistants when I dealt with Hootie, the kid-phobic agility dog.

Ceasar,
You never cease to amaze me. You talk about the way children should respond around dogs. As many times as I have watched each and everyone of your episodes, there is still SO MUCH to learn. Often when we go to pet store, I tell my kids to ask the owner if they can pet their dog. I haven't even stopped to consider what the dogs want out of all this! I have to also remind them to stay calm around the dog and not start being affectionate and making eye contact right away. Keep sharing your expertise Ceasar. We are listening.
Thanks!
What a great show! Good luck with it!You have so much wonderful & helpful infomation. It is true that many dogs perceive children differently. Children walk and do smell differently. As a daycar owner and a yorkie owner of 2 yorkies. I do a daily so and tell with the dogs. Childern sit at a circle time and stay sitting and they pat, sing and just love to interact with the dogs. The stay sitting so they dogs feel safe, Mini yorkies get scared, as they are so tiny. Thanks, Cheryl~

I am addicted to your show. I don't have a dog (2 cats - and wish there were a Cat Whisperer!) but your show is a fascinating look at animal behavior, causes of misbehavior, and even human psychology. I have learned so much and been fascinated by your calm, caring approach to dogs and owners. And I have learned some tips that can apply to cats! Many thanks!
"The reality is that most parents don’t teach their children the correct way to act around dogs."
Isn't that the truth!! I could not tell you how many times complete strangers, kids and adults, want to invade my dogs' personal space. It has gotten to the point where people ask, "Can I pet your dogs?" and my response is "No! I'm still working on clearing up the nasty skin fungus they have. I wouldn't want you to catch it." Or "Their cadaver training does not allow them to interact with live people."
I have a 5 yr old collie. Since she looks like "Lassie" many people assume she is just like her. Sometimes kids and adults want to reach over the fence and pet "Lassie" even though she barks like a maniac when unknown people stop. Several times I have put her on her leash, taken her out of the fenced yard where she immediately calms down, and talked to the neighborhood kids and adults about how to meet a dog and respecting their area. It nice to see kids interact with her and both having a good time. Lana and I attended puppy school when she was 4 months old and she was such a good student! She has a dominant personality but with respecting her "dogness" and being as consistently alpha as I can we have a pretty good relationship. I also have an 11 yr old mini Schnauzer who likes to roam. The best way I have found to get him back is to do the opposite of what you would expect. I start after him and once he knows I am there I call his name, turn around, and start walking away from him. He usually goes nuts and runs after me. Most people are amazed. Well, if someone is following you, you must be the leader! Right? I can't say that all is perfect at my house, but I have seen how amazing it can be when you and your dog understand each other. We still have issues to resolve, but we're going in the right direction most of the time.
I bought my husband the cutest beagle/terrier puppy, she is so adorable except for one thing she bites constantly and when I say no she barks or growls, I know she is just a baby 8 weeks old, but I have to stop her now or I think it will get worse, does anyone have any suggestions.
Growing up I was very afraid of dogs (Any size dogs). Then I adopted Lucy a two year old lab from the Animal shelter. When we took her home and petted her she would growl at us.....I thought I had adopted a mean dog! We learned through our vet she had been beaten and was very scared. That was over 8 years ago and Lucy is the best dog! I teach children when the approach her to hold out there hands so she can smell them. NOT to bring their hands down on the top of her head (She might think they are going to hit her) I do explain to the children How we adopted Lucy. Lucy now has a Little sister 4 moth old Lillian a Lab Husky mix we adopted from a animal rescue. Lillian and Lucy with you all a Happy 2006!
Cesar - I've enjoyed watching all the reruns last year here in Wisconsin. I was happy to hear you have new shows to watch. I just finished watching this episode. I am also excited that you have a dvd out.
I know I have a problem like everyone else on how I treat my dogs (two German Shorthaired Pointers - female & male). I treat my boy differently then my girl - I let him get away with more. Even though I know this it's hard to change but watching the episode with the Aussie really made me think. I have things I need to let go from the past and work on the moment. There's nothing I can do to change what happend - just deal with it and move forward. Be the pack leader and calm assertive.
As you can see you have a lot of admirers so please continue with your show - there will always be a problem dog- I mean owner to help.
Thanks
Linda
We just wanted to say that WE love this show. My husband and I have a 1 year old boxer. We are HUGE dog fans!
We believe that my daughter's Jack Russell may be deaf, as she doesn't respond to verbal commands or loud sounds (even when asleep). Any chance that you might address the challenges of training a deaf animal on one of your shows?
Regards,
Larry
Caesar!! My husband, 7 year-old-daughter, Emily, and I love your show!!!!! We are so excited you are now showing on a regular time and day!!! We have learned sooooooo much from you and your family!! I am a licensed master social worker - advanced clinical practice, and truly appreciate your skills with both people and dogs!! You are fascinating!!!! Please keep your episodes coming!! Thank You, Linda, Gerry and Emily Kelly
Thank you for the episodes with the chihuahuas. I have an 11 year old chi who I used to treat like a fashion accessory, but since I began watching your show last season, I understand he is a dog, albeit a tiny one. He definately has behavior issues which I now know were caused by me. I saw him as a forever puppy which contributated to some of his negative behaviours. So, I am trying unravel 11 years of positive enforcement to uncoming behaviours of barking when the doorbell rings and growling and snipping at guest who visit our home.
Thanks! Keep up the good work!
FRAN
I think that you should make sure that you are in leadership first. Cesar always emphasizes that you be the leader. So when your dog bites you tell her "NO", I think you should do that and then when she starts to bark and growl you "shoosh" her. Keep doing that if she doesn't stop. When she stops and is calm you give her a little praise (calm and short praise) this will hopefully solve your problem.
~Chantel
Dear Caesar,
I wanted to tell I LOVE your show. I’ve learned so much from watching you. I especially like the tsssst sound you use when correcting a dog. I’ve tried it on my four Chihuahua’s and let me tell you it works like a charm!!! As soon as they hear that sound they stop what they’re doing. We are now working on barking when someone enters our home. It’s slow going but I have confidence that all will turn out fine. Thank you for having such a great show and teaching so many of us dog owners so many of your tricks of the trade. Keep up the great work.
Lyn
I too am a dog owner (collie) and big fan of the show. It's amazing to watch Cesar work, and there is always some bit of knowledge that I can take away from the show. I'm glad Cesar is getting the additional exposure and hope it continues for a long time!
The show was NOT on the National G Channel on 6 th of Jan 2006 as stated.Did anyone else have the same problem??????
I absolutely love your show! I don't have a dog but I desparately want a couple of cavalier king charles spaniels. I have learned so much about what not to do and how to be. I had planned to treat these dogs like kids, but I now know I must respect these animals as dogs and treat them accordingly; but loving them at the same time. Keep up the wonderfuly work. When I see you being featured on The Insider it scares me that you'll become so big that you won't have time for these shows. I hope that never happens! But I love that you're receiving the recognition you deserve and that you're able to offset some of the terrible training and advice given by some vets and dog 'trainers'. I'll always remember - train people - rehabilitate dogs. Thank you Ceasar!
We love your show. I have 4 rescued dogs. One is a pit-bull. He is the most loving gentle dog and gets along well with other dogs. When I can I rescue dogs and find them homes. You have helped me deal with these dogs as well as giving me knowledge on how to utilize my behavior when dealing with them. I admire you for giving your pack of dogs a good and loving home. You need a medal. Keep up the good work. Thanks Cesar.
Hello. I am from Singapore. Although you may not know where Singapore is, I would like to ask your opinion on something. My female Jack Russell gave birth to 4 puppies. 1st was a male which we named Lucky. 2nd was a female which we name Niki. 3rd was a male which we named Russell and last of all was a female which we named Teri. They were together since young but the probem started very soon...The two males starts to fight and the two girls would bark. It is very hard to stop the two males and we have tried many things but it still doesn't work. Now that they are saprated, you can't let them see each other as they will start to growl and will want to fight. Soon after, the two females will fight. The dogs fought very hard and sometimes either one will bleed. The males especially. They are brothers and sisters yet they fight with each other. We are already using choke chains for our dogs. I would like to ask you if there is any way which i can settle this problem and put them together again? Thank you!
Best Regards,
Grace
The show was on National G. as promoted - were you watching the right channel? Are you watching in the U.S.?
I think the "seeds" we plant with young children are very important. Children understand a lot more if we also give them the reason WHY they shouldn't stare at, run up to, or touch a dog...from the dog's point of view.
If you just say don't do this or don't do that, you are not only missing an opportunity to educate, but also miss making a connection of understanding between the child and how a dog thinks. A lot of times kids can "get it", a lot more quickly than adults!
With my very hyper neighbor kids, I've found that if I tell them how their behavior helps a dog feel comfortable, it gives them a good reason to comply.
Sometimes you just never know, what one small seed will grow into...reminds me of reading how Cesar's Grandfather taught him to "Never work against Mother Nature".
Signed,
A grateful grandchild, of a wise Grandmother. :)
Cesar,
I was clicking through the channels and stopped on "The Dog Whisperer" because my daughter loves animals, especially dogs. I was only half-watching the show...initially skeptical that this would be some lame spoof of the Horse Whisperer. In less than 2 minutes I was totally engaged by the show (Episode 1, the ferocious chihuaha).
Endlessly fascinating and insightful show. You are truly brilliant and entertaining. The Sigmund Freud of animals.
Mike
I love watching your show and learn so much from it. It's amazing how perceptive you are. I have three females dogs: a chow-chow and 2 mixed breeds. The information gained from the show helps so much with keeping the peace!
Having your children in the last episode was very touching. It shows that in addition to being a brilliant Dog Whisperer, you must also be a wonderful father.
I am not the pack leader for my 5 month old Queensland Healer. She has my pants in her mouth every step I take. We are working on it, the schoosh works good with the two fingers, it gets her attention. She is very smart, my dalmation is completely lead by me, I don't even have to talk to her for her to be near me, she is always next to me and never in front of me and sahe does this all on her own, I hope her influence will be good for Maly Panna Pies..That's her name
Caesar,
I am a huge fan of your show! I watch every episode and learn from them. I am the proud owner of 5 Italian Greyhounds and 1 Eskie. I was delighted to see that you have a couple of IGs in your pack. So many of them end up in rescue because people don't know how to care for them properly. I am also touched to see Calvin and Andre in some of your episodes. They are beautiful boys and it's quite evident that you share a fabulous relationship with them. I wish you much sucess with this new season of the Dog Whisperer. Thank you for all of your expertise.
Margaret
Hi Caesar :)))))))
You are amazing!!!!!!!! I LOVE YOUR SHOW!!!!!
I have a 2yr old Chocolate Lab and he is "food aggresive". I have tried taking up his food when he growls, let him take a breather and then putting down his food again. he is so mean about his food, otherwise he is so good. WISH THAT YOU WERE HERE IN PHILLY :))))))))) KEEP UP YOUR AMAZING WORK!!!!!!
Caesar,
I have a German Shepherd and Golden Retriever. I was told about your show by my son (who has a rotty, mixed Lab, and a mixed Great Dane). He told me how amazing you were with dogs, and after watching your season premier, you are now a regular on my TV schedule! My daughter and her husband have a Rotty and a Saint Bernard. (BIG dog lovers.)
Her son is only 17 months old, and we have introduced him to the dogs very slowly. He loves them, and while they are all good dogs, and very gentle, dogs will be dogs so we supervise his interaction with them very carefully. (You can't tell a 17 month old not to look a dog in the eye). Sometime, can you cover at what age do you, and how do you, teach your dogs that the children have a higher ranking in the pack than they do? We don't assume that just because my grandson is "human" the dogs know this, since children are bitten by family dogs too often. I was bitten at the ages of 4, 5, and 11 by other people's pets. (Don't ask me why I still love dogs, except I understood it was what I had done wrong that made them bite me.) I would love to hear what you have to say on this subject.
Looking forward to your future shows!!
We love your show in my house, and actually arrange our schedule around your show times ! I especially love " Daddy" and the way he enjoys going to certain sites to assist you in helping other dogs.I would love to hear more about him, and how you rehabilitated him. Thanks !
Hey Bev do you ever tape his shows at all? you should watch the one with the food aggressive dog that he had to work with. Watch Cesar and see how he delt with it. And for scott do you have a vcr you could record his shows that way just in case you end up missing them. bye for now Danessa
I too love Daddy with his big head!
WELSH CORGIS.....HELP!!!!
I have a male and female, and they are crazy. I can't feed them together, and even apart they make circles, growl and bark when they hear each other. If the male barks, the female attacks him. And he barks at doorbells, cars, other dogs, hole punchers, computer printers, phones ringing, reflections on the ceiling, electronic sounds, can openers, words (bath, clip nails, outside, Maggie (the cat)), the cat itself, cameras (big problem), etc. Are all Corgis this neurotic or am I the lucky one? I think I need to be trained.......
Yes Barb--Daddy has such a personality, he is so funny !! I love the episode where Ceasar says he is submissive and Daddy lays upside down. He is a laugh riot. If Ceasar was in New York I'd adopt that dog !
Cesar - you have truly been blessed with a gift from God. I have a 4yr old Rottie, Ciara. She is 157lbs and at 5mo had a serious back injury that was misdiagnosed as cancer of the blood. 1 yr later and over $10K spent it was found she had cracked her spine near her tail and an infection had set in. They said I would have to put her to sleep as she was so big and unable to walk to go to the bathroom. They said she would never walk again, but I found a wonderful dr and after taking massive amounts of antibiotics, etc, she recovered but was unable to use her back legs. I began walking her with a towel under her tummy for several months and she began to walk on her own. If you didn't know she was injured you would not guess by her walk. Since that time she has become very aggressive towards other dogs. She has had puppy training and knows her commands but when another dog is near she barks and lunges as if to attack them. She will not obey a voice command once she has taken this stance. I am afraid to walk her because she drags me down the road and terrifies other folks walking their dogs. She will even sit and watch out our windows and bark and lunge at dogs walking in front of our property. If the other dog is passive she will start to whimper and want to sniff and be friends. If the other dog is aggressive she will try to attack. She also has a terrible habit of barking at microwave towers. This is awful when we are on a trip - she will jumb from a sound sleep and start barking wildly until the tower is out of view. She is the queen of the house and we love her very much. Please help -
I have been a follower of the Dog Whisperer for about a year and a half and am thrilled that it is now on prime time television and is a whole hour. As a dog lover and owner the show has provided me with many useful tips on how to keep my two HUGE Rottweiler/Mastiff/Pitbull mix dogs happy and in line. We have a lot of work to do and since I've just ordered Cesar's new DVD from his website I know it will be easier for us in the near future. My biggest problem is getting the entire family on board with discipline, boundries and limitations but we are a work in progress and I know as things improve with our dogs behavior they will begin to see how our actions, attitude and energy affect our dogs.
I want to thank Cesar for his championing of dog breeds typically consider by the general public as dangerous breeds. I accept that there are no vicious dog breeds and it saddens me when I hear other dog owners declare that they don't want their dog near mine because of their breed mixture. A neighbor recently told me, as his dog ran into my yard barking and growling at me, that I didn't need to worry because she wouldn't bite because she is a Lab. I simply asked him if she had teeth and when he said yes I told him then she can bite! Ignorance is a dangerous thing indeed. Hopefully Cesars message will be heard by those who need to hear it but in the meantime I do my very best to make sure that my dogs ambassadors for their two main breeds of Rottweiler and Pitbull.
I also spread the word about The Dog Whisperer show to my co-workers and friends who own dogs. I'm afraid I'm a bit of a walking talking advertisement for Cesar's show and his methods and what they need from us in order to be good pets. My family says I'm obsessed because I'm always saying, "Cesar says to do this and Cesar says not to do that." I don't think they understand how much I want our pets to be the joy I know that they can be even though they are not anywhere near problem dogs...they just have a few annoying issues I'd like to eradicate and I will.
An Alpha Female and Leader of the Pack Still in Training,
Cheryl
Fabulous tips, I adopted two six month old American Pit bull terriers a month or so ago and they are awsome puppies, very good with my kids. My problem is that they play to rough with my kids and it scares my two year old he goes from calm and collected to a bundle on the floor covering his head when they get excited, and of course then he gets trampled. I am working on his behavior around the dogs but even if the dogs obey every other command I give they will not play without the jumping, growling and nipping at eachother no matter how much I inforce that I am the leader, what now?
I have 3 dogs at home, 2 big, one small, all to be classified as disastrous canines (white lab/shepard, siberian husky, and terrier/pitbull). Thanks to you, good long walks in the morning and more of course, and I can leave them at home, have them around visitors, inside my house. My dogs are a total joy, thanks again Mr. Millan.
I have worked rehabilitating animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, horses...) for over 30 years. I never realized what it was that animals respected in me until I saw your show. Now I am teaching it to their owners (Calm Assertive) and am having more success with the owners.
I am so pleased that I can now refer people to your DVD for a deeper understanding of their animals.
My kids have always liked going and watching me, and when I wouldn't give THEM enough attention, they would get down on all fours and act submissive. I always got the point and treated them more like my prizes. Now they are older (10 yr old twin boys), they are watching your episodes and asking me questions that reveal their interest and understanding of dog psychology.
You are a blessing to us all.
Thankyou!
I am with an animal rescue group. I have been rescuing dogs before I started school. I take the "problem children" and the other volunteers can't believe the difference in the dog a few weeks later. I have 5 of my own that were all abused and now my beagle that was going to be put down for being “vicious” is one of the biggest babies I have. However, I think I have my hands full with bear. He's a really big guy, sometimes he's OK sometimes not. I admit with him I have taken a few steps back, but I am determined to get to him. We have so many that others say we should just have put down, But I just cann't do it! Some are kid aggressive, some are man aggressive and some simply don't like anybody! Please keep up the great work, I learn soooooooooo much from watching you. Because of your show YOU have saved many lives! I wish there was a way I could get you to come to Traverse City Michigan to give just a few pointers on our "extremely difficult" cases. But as a non-profit organization we simply wouldn't be able to pay very much. If you or anyone else has any suggestions PLEASE let me know.
My husband and I have a German Sheppard dog with severe fear/aggression. He is 15 months old-neutered-we've had him for 1 year. He is very protective of us & house to the point that family and neighbors are afraid of him. He shows qualities of a good police K-9. (My husband is a police officer).
Can you help me-I love this dog and want him to be with us always. Will he outgrow this? Can you suggest anything?
Thank you
Nancy Steele
Hello - I have a 6 month old Italian Greyhound and a 5 year old son and 2.5 year old daughter. The puppy is great with my husband and I, but constantly nips and chases my children. My 2 year old is always running from place to place and is guaranteed to have him nipping at her the second she starts to run. Even if they just come into a room or have a toy he will immediately run to them and bite at the toy and their clothes. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Cesar,
I love your show. I'm crazy about my dogs. Most of them I pick up at the shelter or on the side of the road. All of them already have problems that I'm never sure how to handle. You've helped me alot and I can't wait for your book. I've recorded all your show times and want to know are you going to have a video sometime in the future. Also where did you get the name Cesar, if you don't mind my asking.
Sincerely,
Marie
I am learning so much from watching your show! I have a 4 yr old, slightly possessive, insecure, beautiful, mixed breed female dog named Chloe. I love her to death! When we go to the dog park she stays right next to me, she doesn't like it is a dog gets in between her and I. If a dog looks at her the wrong way or gets in between us, she becomes agressive, and I also see that she is full of fear, really. Recently we brought home a sister for Chloe, a female, Dogo Argentino puppy, named India. Chloe has slowly accepted her as a part of our family, bust still doesn't let India play with her toys, sleep on her bed, or even look at her food - as she has never had to SHARE! However the funniest thing happened at the dog park last week. India who is now 6 months old, was horsing around with another puppy about her same age. When the other puppy jumped on India's back, Chloe ran over and barked at the puppy and gave the puppy a little nip. It seems to me like CHloe was trying to protect her sister India from this other puppy. I wish I were more experienced in dog psychology so that I could understand understand what is going on inside the mind of my little Chloe. Chloe is not a nightmare at all, but I would like to help her become a more self assured dog, and by watching your show I think that I have started to look at my relationship with my girls - a little differently and hopefully for the better... Love to watch! Thank you!
I have worked with Rottweiler Rescue for years in the Houston, Texas area. I love your show, especially when you say that you love Rottweilers. I try to be a good pack leader every day. My husband and I work with new and reinforcement training every day. My female Rotts are working girls and they work for every thing they get, food, treats, toys, etc. They love it!
I have moved to Fredericksburg, Texas, ironically between two neighbors who hate Rotts. These women believe all the mythology, that Rotts are vicious dogs. My dogs have never shown any aggression to any human, not even at the vet's office.
I will not change their minds, but I will make sure that my girls are good citizens and stay in my fenced yard and my house, for my dogs' safety, not my neighbors.
Thank you for your good works and good words concerning Rottweilers.
I also like your new follow up stories. That is the best! I like to hear from your former students, both canine and human.
Cesar's show is the best, I watch the old ones over, and always get something out of them that I missed the first time. I'm so impressed with how he handles the owners, with total respect, he always impowers people with such great ability, which seems to cross over into other areas of our lives. Cesar, your truly a blessing for all! I look forward to each and every episode. Michelle
I just discovered this show. I can truly appreciate it, having two mixed breed dogs, both of whom became severely dog aggressive at one year of age. I searched for two years looking for a trainer who could work with them. Even PHD's in Animal Behavior, and thousands of dollars, had no impact. I finally found a trainer who worked wonders with them. She used many of the same techniques I am seeing Cesar use. I could actually take them in to a pet store under control. Unfortunately, living in the country, we had a mentally unstable neighbor who poisoned most every dog in our neighborhood. I will never get over my loss. I now have a Golden Retreiver pup. He is easy to work with and is learning well because of the training my other two dogs provided me with. I am wondering if Ceser would ever consider expanding his business to other states and teach new trainers to represent his techniques in working with dogs under his name. Horse trainers have done this. I do not find clinics valuable with horses because they are often "set up". This is why it would be great to work with dogs one on one with their owners, using Ceser's techniques.
Can you do a show about introducing a new puppy in the family with small children. to train the children correctly so the puppy will not bite them and think they are playing.
Cesar: you have change my life, I'm very proud of you as hispanic, please don't stop, finally many people are realizing that dogs are dogs and not people.
hi i have a puppy that is a old english bull dog my qustion is when they get older to they get mean can they bit do i have to watch out for my kids a round it.
Hey, we just wanted to say that we love your show and have watched re-runs numerous times and still get new insight. We're excited about the new shows coming up. I'd love to see a show about dogs fearful of adults. We have a couple of great rescue dogs both under two and over seventy pounds each. One is scared to death of other men. He will stand on the other side of me or even between my legs if one of my friends or neighbors is around, but he stands in between my wife and others. It's nice to see him protecting her, but I don't want his fear to move to aggresion and I think that's the direction it's heading.
Whatever the topics I'm sure your new shows will be great and we'll see them several times each.
Don't stop -- you've helped so many.

My family raises Guiding Eye puppies. Currently we're raising a yellow lab named Ophelia. We also have our own dog named Spirit, a very sweet Brittany Spaniel. Just like any puppies, Guiding Eye puppies exhibit some of the same problems mentioned by many of your viewers. A technique that helps us when Ophelia is getting a little too rambunctious around us, Spirit, or the kids is to hook her leash onto our belt. She then follows us around as we do the normal things of the day. It completely calms her down. She gets the idea that although she's special and we want her to be with us, we're Alpha dog not her. It's something we learned in Guiding Eye class. What is stressed in our classes is a variation on the old adage "catch your (child) dog being good" then praise them effusively (or if they're made too agitated by that calmly).
I've seen your show a couple of times and enjoyed it very much. I intend to watch it more when I can.
Hi, Cesar!
Like all the other post writers, I absolutely love your show. I have always been a pretty good pack leader, but my new puppy, a pembroke corgi is a natural 'cattle dog' and a heel nipper. I 'shhhh' him and correct him. Should I be doing anything else? I have a very large yard and he is getting plenty of exercise. As I mentioned before, I am a pretty good pack leader and my dogs are quite well behaved, but this little bugger can't seem to help him himself. He's good about everything else, and obviously very, very intelligent.
I saw the your one show where you brought the dog to a herding pen and let him do what came naturally, but I don't think that kind of thing is available here in NJ where I live!
I would really like to see a show that specifically demonstrates how you walk your dogs. I notice that you sometimes use what looks like two leashes. How exactly DO I get my dogs to 'heel' properly? Do I have to walk them to my left? I'm right handed and that is not really a comfortable position for me.
By the way, your little boys are beautiful and they and their mom are most definitely an asset to your show!
Regards and best wishes,
Willa
I thought your article was great! I have a male yellow lab Guide dog and kids AND even adults will grab my dog out of the blue and he might get a little of course for a few secs because he's trying to work for me and when I tell them as nice as I can although at times I don't feel very nice cause I say it so much they'll say "oh, I know, or I knew that." And my boy gets stared right in his eyes. And ppl call him and then if I say please don't do that it will distract them then they say, oh well he came over to me first. Any way I loved your article. Just figured I'd tell you why.

THANKS
Yes, I need help. I have a mini-pincher almost 2 years old. He bites me. Like for instance the other day he vomited. I was trying to clean it up & he jumps up & bit me. If he has something, & if I try to get it from me. He will bite me. Now, I am wandering what to do. I am tired of getting bit. He does not do any of this to my husband. Please help!
Thank you
Janie Lovelady-Iglesias
Love your program.
We have a cute 4 month old poodle/rat terrier mix who was trained to potty on paper by the breeder. Now I can't get her to do her duty outside. I stay with her outside for 15-20 minutes, and nothing. But as soon as she comes in the house, she heads for the paper. I also put her used papers outside hoping that she will get the hint, but nothing. What can I do? Thanks.
i have an eight month old lab mix. my husband and i have had her since she is 9 weeks old. she housebroke in one day. she sits when told and when we use the four paw rule it most of the time works but she still has a mouth problem. she likes to nibble on us. we had a sixteen year old which we had to put to sleep due to illness. is it her that has a problem or is it us that just no longer has the patience. please help because if it keeps up we are going to have to get rid of her i would like to add that she does not do this at all times. she seems to also when she wants to play try to impose that fact on us we do run with her in our back yard and she does have a lot of engery all in all she is a very good dog and a loving dog we have tried all the ways that we know to offset this problem and so far nothing seems to work
HEY I UNDERSTAND THE FEAR OF BIG DOGS BUT REALLY IT IS NOT THE DOG. JUST BECAUSE THE DOG IS BIG IT IS NOT ALWAYS GOING TO TURN OUT TO BE MEAN. NO DOG IS BORN OUT TO BE MEAN IT OWNER OR SOME SITUATION IN ITS LIFE IS WHAT MADE IT BE MEAN.... BECAUSE IF SOMEONE DOES NOT TEACH A DOG WRONG DOING THEN THE DOG WILL NOT BE LIKE THAT. IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE DOGS LIFE STLE. IF THE DOG HAS BEEN TREATED RIGHT THEN IT WILL NOT BE MEAN OR HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO TO THEN BITE OR HURT SOMEONE.IT WILL BE NICE,BUT IF THE DOG HAS HAD A HARD LIFE AND IT OWNER TOUGHT HIMORHER TO BE MEAN AN OVER PROTECTIVE THEN THATS WHEN YOU MIGHT WANT TO WATCH OUT!!! BUT THE MAIN POINT IM TRYING TO MAKE IS DONT ASSUME THAT A DOG IS GOING TO BE MEAN AND AGRRESSIVE ITS WHAT THE DOG HAS BEEN TOUGHT IT DIDNT TEACH ITSELF..... BELIVE IN THE DOG AND IT WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE MUCH MUCH EAISER..... HAVE TRUST!!!!!
Hi Ceaser!!!! I love your show. We have a 1 year old German Shepherd named Tahsa. We are crazy in love with this dog. Beautiful dog with a good disposition. Loves people, but barks, jumps, tries to get away when she sees other dogs on walks. We take her on regular 2 mile walks at least every other day (probably not enough). She has only been exposed to other dogs a few times and it did not go well because the dogs were scared and too small. She is not very affectionate and jumps on us conastantly. It hurts because she is so big and so energetic. I've tried turning away, saying "no", but it doesn't work. We have received a few lessons from a private instructor at our home. I've read several books. I know it is something I am doing, because the dog is so smart in other ways. Plus, it is hard to keep her out of the kennel because she wants to tear up the toilet paper, socks, rags etc.... It really is like having a 2 year old. I've tried discipline before affection. Maybe I am not consistent enough or I am not exercising her enough??? I would love a suggestion. You are amazing to watch. Thanks!!
hi ceaser, love your show.my question is my ywo year old collie mix.when my neigbor takes him out.hes good until its time to put him back in the cage.he growls shows teeth and jumps up.any tips? THANKS FOR ANY HELP.
Ceasar, You always amaze me with the way you rehabilitate each and every troubled dog that presents a problem with the owners. As I stated earlier I love Daddy. I'd really like to hear how you found him and what type of rehabilitation he went through. That dog has such a character to him. Thanks, Scott.
I have an Eskie who is fearful of children and will bite. Using Cesar's tips and teaching kids the correct way to pet and interact with dogs is making him less agressive. We are also using the tips on my mother's large lab mix. He is still a puppy and 60 pounds but is learning fast. We still supervise the dogs around kids and i have actually told kids not to touch my dog. If their parents are with, they get kinda upset about it. So it is not always the kids fault. Sometimes the parents need training too.
Many people ask me if my dogs (I have 8) are good with kids. I always ask them how their kids are with dogs . I try to use it as an ed op and show folks how to approach a dog....let the dog come up to you...no eye contact etc.
Many people are offended when I tell them this, but my dogs are not used to children. We do not have any but I do try to socialize them when they are young.
Folks need to remember that Lassie and Rin Tin Tin are constructs and not real.
Lara
Can you do an episode just on "Daddy" and "Willie"?? Everytime they are on the screen, my pup wants to play with them.
My dog has a digging problem. So what do I do when my dad says he will beak her neck when i'm only 9yrs old.And how do I stop do I stop the digging when i'm at school for 6 hours a day.
I recently started watching your show and I am amazed at what you do for those dogs and their owners. My husband and I just brought a new addition home a few weeks ago. A 10 week old Alaskan Malamute. I am watching every episode I can to learn more about helping him become a better dog. I am a little worried that he is already showing signs of aggression. He is going to be a very large dog and I'm hoping to keep him under control as much as possible. Thank you so much for teaching us so much.
Whew--have watched one show and a bunch of archives and this is sooooo messed up--claw hand, choke collar, old, outdated "dominance theory", and any notion that a dog thinks a human is part of their pack--nonsense and damaging in the long run. Positve reinforcement is the only way to achieve good behavior and harmony with no damage to either species. Change your ways--you are teaching from bad information.
I missed the episodies 1 and 12 of your program and would like to recieve the information about chihuahuas, I have just became the owner of a four month old girl and I don't want her to become overprotective of me or snap at my children. Also this was the first time I have seen your show Feb. 24th I dont" know if we have this program in Ohio. Please send any help you can, I will pass your show on to my friends. Thank you. If you can't get me through my E-Mail please send inoformation to Debbie Gingrich 1315 Northfield Ct Springfield, Ohio 45502
To M J Moss,
I would like to say one thing "What planet are you from.
Dogs live in a pack group. Have you ever seen a wild pack of dogs, I have and it's not nice. Dogs have no fear of man like wolves do. You better establish yourself as head of the pack or you could be in for unhappy surprises.
I have a border collie/ blue healer. I came to have her after I was dog sitting for '1 WEEK"( She has been with us 7 months now). The owners called me and said they did not want her any more and if I wanted her I said "No I have a dog" ( a 3 year old well behaved golden retriever) They then told me then they were going to take her to the dog pound or have her put down. The dog was 12 weeks old and abused at the house I later found out each time she went near the kids. We do not have small children but we do have neighborhood kids. Each time a child comes near her she shows her teeth and growls. I am afraid that this summer when she is outside a child will come in our yard and she will bite a child. I do not know what to do I have had her and I in dog school. She is learning what needs to and listens well. But growls and shows her teath at children.
Do you have any suggestions???? Please help I do not want to get rid of her, but I can not risk the children in our neighborhood to be bite and I can not fence in our yard.

Hi,
I have two toy poodles. One is submissive in every way.
The other is dominate. How can I take things from her, when I need/want to without her growling and coming at me?
I am from Venezuela and it is the first time I am in this website, I haven´t seen the program on TV but I am looking forward to see the next one. My best friend told me to check this website because I have a problem with my dog, he is aggressive with children and he bit me once because I wanted to touch him while he was eating something. I know it is very difficult that you answer to me but I would like to know how can I get help with my dog. Is there any number I can call or any other way I can get in contac. My dog SUNNY is six month aprox. I got him from the street when he was one month aprox. and he is a mixed dog. This is my last chance, I have tried many things with his behavior but this week he bit my husband dougther. So I have to have a very good solution to the problem so he could let me keep the dog....and I love my dog with all my hart. I thank you anyway, (I am a spanish speaker..sorry about my mistakes). Hi! I a have 2 female littermates, who are about 10 weeks old. I would like some advice on training, when to start, and should I keep them seperate as much as possible so they don't become too dependant on each other? I would LOVE to see Cesar do a show on the right way to start out PUPPIES! Thanks!!! Pam
Hey Caesar, Ajay here. I have to say you're the best I've ever seen rehabilitate dogs. Also, you're techniques have worked when I tried the on my dog Tommy. We had to stop him barking at others. So I used your technique and it worked. Keep up the show and your work.

Where have you been all my life? I watched your show last night for the first time. I have a 7 year old Newfoundland/great pyr.mix. The absolute love of my life, now. The first year was torture. 100lbs at 6 months. come home from work, puppies play time was grabbing my pant leg and tearing holes, or the whole side of my pants off. I payed people to come to my house to find out what to do. I read every book I could get my hands on & talked to everyone I knew about dogs. I had been to puppy kindergarden & nothing anyone said, taught me, or showed me was anything like what I learned watching just 1 of your shows. I will never miss another show, I will have every cd you ever make & I hope someday I can go to a seminar. thank you!!!!!
hi cesar and congrats your show is awesome, I also have a question i have a yorky dog he was nice with people and i never had a problem with my dog being agressive but all of sudden my dog turn violent and agressive even with me , two days ago he attacked a ladie thank god nothing bad happend to her but why this change and what can i do to make my dog to be the nice dog like it was acouple weeks ago ?
Michael says:
I have a 9 month old Boxer/Pitbull mix. He is such a sweet dog in our house but he has real issues especially with other dogs most troubling, with kids. I have watched every episode of the dog whisperer and I take Jacob on walks regularly and he walks beside me and does ok in that aspect. But the other day he jumped at my neice and he snapped at a young boy who wanted to pet him today. I understand that my attitude has to be calm and assertive when I am walking and I try to show that while I am walking but at the same time I can’t get the fear of other dogs walking up or kids running or walking by and I have learned that by watching Cesar’s show that he will feed off of this. The trouble is no matter how hard I tell my self to not feel this way I can’t help but get this deep seeded nervousness as I’m walking. I used to think that as long as I looked the part it would be ok but apparently it’s not. Therefore I’m going to have him scheduled to be put down because I can’t risk him harming another person especially a kid. I know that with a new owner that knows how to train dogs that Jacob would be fine. He is a beautiful and loving dog but he is extremely insecure. Please help me save my dog’s life by either finding him another home or with some support. Thanks so much.
Dear Cesar your show is number 1 in New York and all over the countries.I watch your shows everyday . I know you are the greats dog whisper I know on tv. Keep up the great work! I have a friend in L.A, who has a Tiban-Terrier dog and her name is Sophia, shes a few years old,.But I love her dearly so. My friend, he doesn't walk her alot,so when I go to L.A to visit them I will take her for a nice long walks. When I walk her,she barks at neighberhood dogs and they make noises back.she pulls and yanks me when walking.Could you give me a good vice. Jessica

i regretfuly have to give my cats up for adoption. My maltese and my cats won't stop fighting! i have tried to find help but nothing seems to work. I love your show but I think i shouldn't go against nature!
Cesar, you really must STOP...using the handle of the leash as a collar.Only dog trainers know that their is a right way to put is choke collar on the right way!!!!!!Maybe you could talk about the right way to put collars on.... P.S. pat daddy on the head for me.Janis
Hi Cesar,we just got this cute 3yr old yorkie who warms up to women pretty quickly at first, she growls but after they pet her she's fine with them and will even come to them but, whenever a man comes she'll growl and after they pet her she's fine but as soon as they walk away and come back she'll do the same thing. My brother who lives with us she still growls at and if we leave her with him she hides from him i think she may have been abused before we got her but i feel bad that she loves me my mom and sister but she won't even go close to him i don't know how to help her to not be afraid.

Hey, I got a rottie pup when he was 1 month...I had a rott/lab mix before so was a lil familiar with the breed...you must be the pack leader, with this breed. You want to treat him as if he were your best friend, socialize him...let him meet everyone and everything...when he does wrong let him know it at that second...use the 'tsssst' sound Ceasar talks about. ALWAYS stay in charge..or your rottie will take charge. Other than that I found they are the best dogs around, contrary to what people say about them, they are BIG babies
Hi Cesar,
I own a 11 month year old male rat terrier. Who has not been socialized very well. I am walking him everyday now. I have noticed he is intensely afraid of people. to the point where he nipped someone today. He isn't as afraid of other dogs. but he still pees when aproached to be petted by a human and gets stiff. I really need some tips on dealing with his aggressive and skiddish tendencies! We have bought a muzzle so when we are out and about with him he can't bite. Is this the right choice?
Thank you for your time,
Katelyn
To Grace from Singapore!
I have no idea when your blog regarding your 4 young Jack Russel's was first printed, but I must ask a question or two. First, are they spayed and neutered? If not, I feel you might get rid of some of that hostility if they were. Secondly, are you sure its the males that start the fights? Cesar says that the animal language is silent. You have to learn who is actually doing the talking and if the males are being set up for their encounter. Could the females be at fault?
Cesar just recently worked with 2 Bull Dogs and a Cocker Spaniel from the same household. If you have not seen this one please do your best to find it. These dogs fought so fearsly, that for me, it was hard to even watch the show. After spending some time and a couple of visits with this family Cesar found out it was the female Spaniel who was actually getting the boys going. I can't remember how he determined this but look for it. There is a blog on this show.
Dear Mr. Millan,
I wish I had read your book Cesar's Way before we got our dog Sky. She was a gorgeous year-old Keeshond mix that we got at the animal shelter. She was in there because she "didn't get along with other dogs." We discovered that she was fine with dogs unless they tried to exert dominance. Then she would fight with them. After we got her we also learned that she would run off and not come to us and had intense hunting instinct. She killed my mother's duck, chickens and a stray cat. We resorted to keeping her in her pen (it was a large one) and I walked her every day. But I didn't realize that I should have made her walk behind me. She didn't jump up on us or show any other behaviour that indicated she didn't consider us the pack leader. Now I know better. She got away from us one day and attacked a neighbor's cat so we had to put her to sleep. I can't help but think that if I'd read your book before all this, we'd still have her today.
Dear Cesar,
My husband just bought your first season on DVD for me. I picked up your first book weeks ago, and I can't put it down. I have learned so much from you. My husband and I have two shih-tzus, Misty and Chelsea. We love them so much! Our world revolves around them and keeping them happy and balanced. I am moving towards becoming a calm and assertive pack leader with my dogs. We just want to thank you for what you do. You have inspired me in many ways. I am working towards becoming a Veterinary Technician. But, I have also seriously considered becoming an Animal Behaviorist. I know I will never be as good as you. I have always had an undying love towards animals. You are like a role model for me. Thank you so much for coming into our lives.

Cesar,
Let me just say right off the bat, your show is quite possibly the best show I have ever watched, or ever will watch. Currently, I am working on convincing my friend, who has an overweight and bossy dog, to watch your show, though she doesn't seem to believe that she is at fault for her dog's behavior.
I just have a question to ask you, and this may not have anything to do with your blog but, how can I stop being afraid of dogs? I am 16 and I haven't had any pets, save for a few fish so I truly do not know how to behave around dogs. I also don't know where my fear stems from, as I have never been bitten or attacked by a dog. I know that I should behave calmly around them, but for some reason, I can't. I really love animals, especially dogs, but I can't seem to get over my fear. What's worse, I KNOW they sense my fear and think that I'm weak. I would REALLY, REALLY appreciate it if you could give me some pointers!! I volunteer at a shelter, the ASPCA, where I socialize cats and I am looking forward to walking dogs when I turn 18, though I know I can't (especially with shelter dogs) if I can't trust them.
In one of your episodes, you dealt with a woman who was mortified of dogs, and brought Papa with you, to show her that pitbulls are not aggressive. I can almost relate with her, but I am not just afraid of the characteristic "bad dogs." I am afraid of dogs both big and small. I really wish I could project calm energy. Please help!!
I am currently trying to find a puppy (blue Heeler or Australian Shepard)for a watch dog as I just recently had a man come in on me and my daughter. I am pretty good with dogs myself but my daughter is only 2. I know she needs to be a pack leader but is too small to really understand. I recently seen a show where you put the baby in the stroller out front to insert him/her as a pack leader. My question is how do you do this with 2 year old?
Cesar,
I watch your show all the time. Each time I see them again, I pick out something I missed before.
I have 2 dogs. I also have a Jeep Wrangler that I ride them around in with the top off. They make, and I have doggie seatbelts, that they have learned to wear, thanks to some calm assertive, power of intention, owner training. The dog seatbelts were put to the test one unfortunate night. I am so very glad they were wearing them, as we are still one happy family. I see that you have a Jeep Wrangler for this season. Could you show a dog with one on? Train a dog to wear one?
Or if any one else that reads this, PLEASE buy one for your dog. You will never, ever, ever, regret it. I tell everyone, and anyone who will listen. I just couldn't live with myself, if I had to walk away from a wreck without my dogs.
dear caeser,
We love our little 9 month maltese puppie so much ,but there's 1 problem it is that he hates other dogs not just little ones but big ones too he thinks he's a pitbull or some big dog.He growls ,barks, and, snaps at any kind of dog but he would never do this to a person. He's the gratest thing that has ever happened to us and we wish that he could conqure this little peculiaritie
Thanks a lot your fan

Many Dogs are getting a bad rap.The underdogs and\or look alikes are being sentanced to death with out due cause. In many states and provinces by-laws that prohibits certain breeds of dogs. They are put down because of what they are not who they are. If happens with people it called genocide when it happens to dogs it called legislation.
This is a very good topic; dogs with kids! I have three daughters and a mi-ki dog. The dog loves the oldest daughter, who is very strict on rules and the dog's behavior. He also listens to her more and never shows agression towards her. But with the smaller ones, he will not tolerate much. Even though they can be strict on rules, too, he snaps at them whenever they tell him to do or not to do somehting. I think he thinks that the children rank lower than him in the pack because they are smaller, or they act differently.
The dog is always growling, barking, or snapping at the smaller children, which I read meant that he thought that the children ranked lower in the pack than he did. So, basically, the dog thinks that he can boss little kids around and they can't make him do anything.
Hi Ceasar! I just wanted to let you know that I love your show (like everyone else!) and my favorite dog is Daddy. Pitbulls are my most favorite kind of dog in the world, and Daddy is like the greatest pitbull. Last night I had a dream that I found a pit like Daddy, looked a lot like him too. In the dream I was like Daddy? And then I adopted him. It makes me so happy when your episodes include pitbulls because then I can learn about the breed and how to handle situations. They are my dream dog, and one day I will get one, but for now while I live at home (I'm 14) my mom won't let me get one because she's afraid and believes all the horrible myths about them. What she doesn't know is that during the summer I stay at my aunts most the time, and take care of pits there (sort of like baby sit, and I do it for free because I enjoy it so much). See ya!
Ceaser my man!!!!!!
I really like your show I was actually watching just a minute ago........
Well I have to go and go to our family reunion....
I haven't seen my family since last summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well talk to you later.....
Rachel Riley
Cesar, You never cease to amaze me! How you have helped so many people and so many dogs with your knowledge of their behavior similar to wolves, dogs wild ancestors. Being twelve I have understood how dogs can react to kids so when petting a dog I always let them sniff me before I pet them. Anyhow I watch your show whenever possible because I love dogs dearly and have three german shepeards. I am hoping to get a dacshund. One of my dogs, Haley, is very sweet but can act hyper. We have nicknamed her Hudini dog because she was the first out of the whelping box and the first one past the gate and the electric fence. Your love of dogs and determination awes me and that is why you are every dog lovers role model including me. I now understand that there really is no bad dog, even a pit bull or any other breed that gets a bad rap. I will look forward to more new episodes and best of luck with your career.
