The Runaway Dog: Sonny, Chocolate & Cinnamon, and Boo
There are dogs who could give Houdini or David Blaine a run for their money. You know what I'm talking about -- those dogs who are unbelievable escape artists. They'll run away at the drop of a hat! Some of them are truly Vegas-quality magicians. I've known dogs to unlock doors, open gates, unbolt locked doggie doorways, and even leap out of moving cars! Most owners of "escape artist" dogs admit their secret fear is that their dog doesn't like them.
But their actions have nothing to do with dogs' feelings for its owners. It may just mean that the dog is bored and frustrated. Most of the "escape artist" dogs that I have dealt with are active breeds that don't have enough to do. Dogs like this need day-to-day activity and I try and remind owners who have these problems that no matter how beautiful or luxurious their homes and backyards, it's still just a big kennel to a dog - a fancier jail. All dogs, particularly active ones, need to be mentally and physically exercised every day. If they're not given healthy outlets for their energy, they will find unhealthy ones.

Cesar,
I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your show! I discovered it sometime last month and found myself watching as many episodes as I could. Really looking forward to the episodes in 2006.
Is there any way you could come to NYC and do some episodes about dogs here? Keep up the great work!
Cesar,
First let me say, I was astounded when I was able to apply and reap quick rewards from my limited knowledge learned from several Dog Whisperer episodes I've recently found on our cable network. I can't wait until your book is out.
Before I saw your show, I thought walking my 2 year old femail Lab consisted of running along with her in what ever direction she wanted to go. Don't get me wrong she has been through basic training and will take commands and is very submissive. It is just the walking that was a continuing challenge. I did invest in a choker chain and a short leash and began walking her versus her walking me by being very dominate and using shush sound and pulling her back at the same time. I walked her for days and the technique has paid off as she now walks beside me with no pulling and stopping where ever she wants. She even stays calm when the odd cat dart across our path as I usally make her sit until the distraction passes by.
Now for our last hurdle with her. When we lived out in the country (since moved to a large subdivision) I would let our Lab pretty much run the fields and woods behind our house as she wanted. Now that we are in a large subdivision, we are contained to walking paths and communial areas so when I do take Buddy out to the country and let her go off chain she runs wild and will not come back until good and ready. I have tried whistles and all types of begging with no success. This is our one last big hurdle with Buddy as I do want to give her the ability to run free sometimes and do what hunting dogs love to do.
Any suggestions on getting her to come when she gets to far off or we are ready to pack up an go?
Many Thanks
Tim, Charleston SC
My husband and I recently found your show and we both love it!
We have two poodles, one who was rescued from absolutely deplorable conditions and another who was spoiled-rotten by my mother-in-law.
We're concerned about the rescue dog. He is extremely submissive and seems to be absolutely terrified of my husband (or any male who is within eye-sight of him). Any ideas on how we can make him feel more comfortable with men (and strangers, he's terrified of strangers)?
The female just needs to learn that she isn't queen of our castle and we've been utilizing the techniques we've seen on your show (walking a lot, making her follow as opposed to leading, etc.) and we've seen quite a bit of improvement within the past few weeks.
Thanks, Cesar!
Cesar,
I love your show! I TiVo each episode so that I can review, as needed.
I grew up with dogs, as my father was a Veterinarian, but never really understood their pack behavior until seeing you show. I presently have three dogs and began applying your teachings. They are well behaved and content, since I am now their pack leader. I was treating them as small humans.
Thanks so much for enabling my dogs and me to fullfill our roles and enjoy one another even more.
Regards,
Jim
Cesar,
Enjoy your show a great deal. I am in awe how you get an out of control dog calmed down. There are so many good dogs dumped in high kill shelters by their owneres simply because their owners didn't know or take the time to train them and the dogs are out of control. A good dog doesn't just happen and your show will definitely save a lot of good dogs lives by raising awareness of what it means to be a responsible dog owner.
Hey, Somebody deliver this message to Caesar. This is a Plea for him to educate the humane system in the country. Send them videos or something to teach them how to train people. They are saying there are only bad dogs when the truth is we all know it's only bad people that fail to train good dogs. PLEASE somebody save my dogs of the world. Do something. They are killing them by the hundreds of thousands a day. Right after his show I saw a dog that was perfectly loving and content and just beautiful but they put him down because he would fight for his food bow. That was just wrong cause that's a correctable trait, so Sad. Please help. Those who have the knowledge also have the obligation to do something.
I agree with Cesar and with so many people who have posted here: there are NO BAD DOGS just dogs that need to be rehabilitated, and most importantly, people who need to be trained.
I was lucky enough to get my hands on an advance copy of CESAR'S WAY, Cesar's new dog training book, and it is SOOOO good! It captures the flavor of the show and give step-by-step examples of how to train your dog and deal with all kinds of issue.
Now if I could only learn that most important lesson: #1 Exercise #2 Discipline #3 Affection
Anthony, I couldn't agree more. Part of Ceasar's message is that we all have to contribute somehow...we can do so by spreading Ceasar's word. We can do so by contacting our own local humane societies and pounds. We can encourage them to take a pack approach with difficult dogs. Each and every shelter should have a copy Ceasar's video on hand. Rather than seeing a dead end when troubled dogs come in to the shelters, the dogs can be trained to interact with humans differently. Those ideas would have to be conveyed and taught to the new owners. This could start a more positive cycle as opposed to the negative one that has been allowed to carry on.
I wish some how there was a way to get ceasar to help these dogs in the shelters. So many good dogs, put down because of people not knowing what they are doing !
Cesar has taken many dogs from shelters and dogs that were on "death row" into his center for rehab, but Cesar is only one man, people...he can only rehab so many dogs at a time! Change happens with each and every one of us! Why not volunteer at a shelter working with dogs (walking them, etc). Most shelter employees I've seen are not at all knowledgeable about how to work with dogs.. they just feed them and occassionally take them for walks. These dogs can only get one on one attention with volunteer help.. so instead of putting the onus on Cesar, how about each person that is concerned with this take an active role in making a change in the world! Unfortunately there is a lot more than just "aggressive dogs" that are being put down. There is simply more supply than there is demand as far as pet adoptions. A good start is to take part in spay and neuter clinics or volunteer at your local shelter's adoption fair.
Cesar,
I am in love with you and your show! You are awesome with dogs and make everything look so easy! I have had great success with my present and past dog, training them on my own with a gentle, yet firm, touch. I believe a well-trained dog makes a much better companion and family member. I have been watching your show since early last year and have been waiting impatiently for new shows! keep up the great work!
Hail Cesar!!!! What an awe inspiring man!! I haven't had this much admiration for anyone in my life! I saw his show advertised on another station, adverising that it was on National Geographic. I only had basic cable. I couldn't get to my cable company here in town to upgrade fast enough. Fridays episode was the first one I've ever seen. Beyond amazing! I usually watch Animal Planet and wondered why his show was not picked up by them.
His teachings would apply to wolf-dogs too, I assume. Although wolf-dogs are altogether a different animal to train his principles must be the same for them.
Looking forward to purchasing your book and dvd. Thankx again!
hi cesar
just wanted to let you know i love your show, been watching for the last few months now. i have a 5 yr old lab,rot and pointer mix. we have tried alot of your tech's out who said you cant teach a old dog new tricks?.. i would really like to see a show on how you take a dog that was socialised around people then to have a different familey member take the dog out of the circle when people are around and try and bring the dog back to being social .can it be done?..

Hello Everyone,
Cesar, what you have to say about working with Mother Nature, really applies to how a dog is designed to walk with their family, (or pack), and have a purpose to their day. Where does this energy go, if this very important part of a dog's design is neglected?
I can draw a parallel with horses being grazing animals, spending their days foraging for food. When we put horses in confinement with no exercise, they develope bad habits, many of which involve chewing on their stalls.
With no constructive outlet for a natural behavior, the energy which drives that behavior must go somewhere. I've seen a dog's natural "drive" towards the hunting of prey, guarding territory, competing for social status, etc...go over the top in the form of what we call behavior problems, when a dog's basic needs according to design, are not met.
I don't think you can "train" a dog out of venting frustrated energy by shaping their behavior. The energy must be put where it was intended by nature, in a productive way. Mental challenge is also important.
Thank you for showing how the use of a backpack, not only helps bring a dog's energy level down, but gives them a purpose, or "job" to do at the same time. This one tip, has been so helpful to both myself and my clients.
For those fellow bloggers, who are asking about how Cesar's methods can help shelters. There is a facility in Templeton CA, called Second Chance at Love Humane Society, which uses Cesar's methods with great success.
:)
Cesar,The world needs more people like you! I am an Animal Control Officer in Upstate NY. I get many aggressive dogs that are running loose that I have to capture & care for until claimed up to five days. Then I take to our county Humane Society. There we have a guy who they call "Dog Whisperer". He is such a gentle man. Always calm no matter how out of control the dog is. Before him, they would just have me automatically take any aggressive dogs to the Vets Office where I had to sit and hold them while the needle went in. I would cry all the way back to work. I know that money has lots to do with the shelters being able to take the time with these dogs. They are all run on County funding (or lack of) and donations and volunteers. Hopefully our whisperer sticks around!
I have done some research regarding shelters.
It seems to come down to liability, funding, and realistic implimentation. Many shelters are not privately owned, and must follow strict guidelines.
The liability issue is a big one. If a shelter adopts out a dog which is known to have bitten someone, they run the risk of being sued.
Funding means there is a limited amount of resources available to help a certain amount of dogs. Many times only the dogs with the best chance of being adopted are saved. Dogs with special needs, behavioral problems, or in need of extensive rehabilitation are sometimes put down in favor of saving the more adoptable ones, with only "X" amount of funding available.
Until more people understand and learn to use the methods Cesar is pioneering, not many people have the knowledge and experience, to go into a shelter, form a rehab pack, and rehabilitate the more troubled dogs.
I am glad to hear there are a few "whisperers" out there, starting to make some changes.
AHA! Runaway Dogs! I never thought my dog didn't like me, but she still would run away. I can understand that she is bored. She is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi that I herd with and she doesn't get to work all that often. She needs to keep her mind busy. Thanks
I too have watched, learned and applied much of the lessons learned from Cesar's show. LOVE IT!
I currently have a Jack Russell Terrier and a Beagle who are both rescues. Believe it or not, the JRT is a therapy dog. the beagle leaves a great deal to be desired....The current dogs are female and I am consisering getting a new JRT rescue who is a male. Am I crazy and asking for more trouble? Someone stop me!!

I have a miniature pincher who according to my friends was possesed by the devil. He would bark non stop if anybody knocked on the door (we keep him inside because it's cold in Massachusetts) or if we let him out in our front yard he would bark non stop if anybody walked by or if he heard any noises. If any of our friends or anybody who didn't live in the house would try to come in he would bark non stop and would actually try to attack. If any of the house members would try to stop him they got bit. He hated being picked up. He would growl and attempt to bite anyone who picked him up, including younger kids. We have to keep signs in front of the house that state: Beware of Dog because he's actually bit people who think that because he is so small he'll be nice. People would walk by and try to pet him, little kids would stick their fingers through the fence to touch him and often got growled at or attacked. He would lay on our couch and if you sat next to him he would growl and move and if you touched him while he was laying down he would bite you. We could not take him anywhere because he would get loose and would not come back to us. Catching him often took from 20 to 30 minutes, and he would get aggressive with other dogs or people walking by. It was a very dangerous situtation.
After watching the dog whisperer we learned how to control his aggressive behavior and have even taken him out for walks. We realized we had to buy a different kind of leash. Walks are wonderful. He walks right beside us now, doesn't stop and does not bark at any thing or any one. After the walks he is so tired, when we get home he lays down on his bed for a few hours. If we let him outside he goes and comes right back to lay down. He has turned into the perfect dog.
There's still one problem, but it's a small problem.
He still barks at anyone who knocks on the door but when told to lay down he growls, it takes him a few seconds and then he actually does it.
The show has helped alot and we got people hooked on it too.
Thank you dog whisperer.
Liberated! Or at least on the way to...
That's how I felt when I started watching Cesar's show. I have a 2 year old male German Shepherd and has issues with cats and other animals. Barking, excitment and pulling on the leash are some of the symptoms I have been experiencing when I walk with him when he meets those furry creatures around our block.
Thanks to Cesar, I have made some improvments in his behavior and most importantly, given me confidence to tackle my problem as a dog owner. Still working on it and the show has truly affected my life and my dog in a positive way.
Thanks Cesar
ANTHONY AND OTHERS,
I AM TRULY SAD AND MAD ABOUT THE MANY DOGS PUT DOWN FOR BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS TOO! IF WE ALL WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE THEN WE NEED TO TAKE A STAND AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS TERRIBLE PROBLEM. I AGREE THAT THE WORD SHOULD BE SPREAD. SO I ASK EVERYONE WHO CARES ABOUT DOGS AND THEIR WELFARE WILL SPREAD THE WORD TO EVERYONE THEY KNOW. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT IF PEOPLE THINKING OF GETTING A DOG WOULD CONSIDER ADOPTING BEFORE BUYING FROM A BREEDER. ALL THIS DOES IS SUPPORT BREEDERS AND THE OVERPOPULATION OF DOGS. ALSO GETTING YOUR DOGS FIXED WILL HELP TREMENDOUSLY.
I AM 13 YEARS OLD AND AM TRYING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY ADOPTING A DOG THIS SUMMER. I HAVE BEEN SAVING MY MONEY OVER A YEAR,AND HAVE EARNED 200 DOLLARS SO FAR. I CAN'T WAIT TO TRY CESAR'S METHODS ON MY OWN DOG.
I WISH WE COULD END THIS TRAGEDY, BUT WE CAN'T DO IT ALONE. AND NIETHER CAN IT BE DONE IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. iT WILL PROBABLY TAKE ALOT OF TIME FOR HUMANS TO MEND WHAT WE HAVE DONE. SO I ASK EVERYONE READING THIS THAT THEY MIGHT TRY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND SPREAD THE WORD!!! "THERE ARE NO BAD DOGS!"
~CHANTEL
I have 2 miniature pinschers.
Max(red male) was very dominant, but training turned him into the smartest dog and most well-behaved, is what people tell me.
Ginger(chocolate female with green eyes) was hiding behind a couch at a breeders' house. The breeder had about 13 minpins, they were all fat and attention hogs. Ginger was so skinny, you could see her ribs. She tried to come towards me when I called her, but those other dogs would not let her.
My brother, who was buying a puppy from this breeder, and his girlfriend saw how Ginger wanted to come to me, so they bought her for me. As soon as I picked her up, which I had to chase her to do, she was quiet as a mouse and she did not move an inch the whole way home.
She would not come to me and she ran out when I opened the door. If I touched her ribs to pet her or pick her up, she would scream. I did not hurt her, but I could tell someone did. So, calm assertive energy is what I did. She scared the dickens out of me when she was running across the street and I had to stop traffic.
Now, she will not run out the door. She does not scream anymore, thank God, even when I put her little pink sweater on when it's cold. She comes when I call her. She loves when I put my foot out and rub her tummy with my toes.
Max and Ginger are my heart and joy. Thanks Cesar! I love your show, your intelligence, your heart and your accent!
Also, YES, I HATE THE FACT THAT PEOPLE DON'T TAKE THE TIME TO TRAIN THEIR PETS AND JUST DISPOSE OF THEM OR LEAVE THEM OUTSIDE ON A CHAIN IN THE SEARING HEAT. I WISH I COULD ADOPT ALL THE ANIMALS.
I HEARD DR. PHIL SAY HE LOVES ANIMALS AND HE WOULD SAVE THEM ALL IF HE COULD, MAYBE HE COULD DO A SHOW ABOUT HOW THIS COUNTRY KILLS SO MANY INNOCENT ANIMALS.
IT REALLY IRKS ME THAT MY TOWN, SAN ANTONIO, IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST KILLERS OF ANIMALS. THE WORST PART IS THAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE PUT DOWN HUMANELY AND THEY ARE NOT. THEY ARE PUT IN PILES LIKE JEWS IN NAZI PRISON CAMPS AND GASSED.
Thanks for listening to my story and my ranting......:-)
It is interesting to see two Min Pin owners posting blogs here. Gladys and Luis' comment could have been written by me a few years ago. We had a female Min Pin that was so aggressive to anyone outside the family we needed to lock her in the bedroom when we had visitors. When we have a son who have lots of friends, it was not easy. She was very unhealthy also. We did not give obedience training to her, we did not walk her and worst of all we purchased her from a pet store that is known to use a puppymill. When we bought her, we had no idea what a puppymill was. Now, I know better.
We still loved her and she was great to us. She passed away two years ago and in a few months we had another Min Pin puppy. This time, I was not going to repeat the same mistake. I looked for a reputable breeder and found a great lady. She shows and breeds show quality Italian Gray Hounds, and breeds pet quality Min Pins. We took our puppy to puppy kindergarten and more obedience training. We walk her more than one hour a day. We give her structure. She is sociable, loves people, and is obedient most of the times (although my husband has some problems controlling her). Best of all, she is very healthy.
I love Cesar's shows and I am so happy he is back. I hope his shows will raise more awareness among dog owners how to be the real owners. We are responsible for the well being of the animals.
Cesar... I am awed everytime I watch you work with a dog. I love your show and all the things it has taught me. I have a 1 yr old male shih tzu and he is a wonderful dog... except he does run when he gets loose outside... not too far just around the house and stays out of reach. I know he likes a little freedom, but this behavior is unacceptable and we are working on retraining him.
I watch your show whenever it is on... even the repeats just to learn more. I love dogs, I've had several in my lifetime, even a beautiful red-nosed pit (she was the most well-mannered of them all) and I believe strongly that their are no BAD dogs, only bad behaviors and irresponsible owners.
I love my dog to pieces and he is a part of our family, but he knows he doesn't run the show... since we brought him home at six weeks of age I had my two children hold him in a submissive position so that he would know they are above him in this dog pack... I believe he is very well-adjusted, even if he is a bit spoiled.
Please continue your outstanding work, and I hope to watch your show for a long time to come.
Tammy
I love the show, I hope you continue to do it. I am looking foward to the new season.
Cesar
My dog won't listen to me and i cant train him.All he wants to do is sit.He won't move or anything!I've bought evry training book and obedience book i can find. But nothing works! Can u give me tips on training my dog?
Thanks
(p.s u don't have to come to my home.)
We really need Cesar to visit the East Coast. I am in Jersey and have a real problem. My german sheperd, Mack, is the most loving dog but he has some issues. First, he chases cars, well just about anything on wheels. Now that he got hit by one he still tries to chase them with the cast on his leg.... This causes a major danger since we are on a working farm and have some dangerous equipment that he chases. Second, he doesn't get along with other animals. This is a problem because he is not the only dog, and we also have horses. He even has to wait in the car until its his turn at the vet.
One problem is that he is 5. We tried numerous training techniques when he was a puppy, and even received advice from the vet, but nothing really ever worked. He is really stubborn. Is there any hope?
I am 10 yrs.old I waited along time for a dog. Maxx is 1 yr.old still has no teeth in front but chews on anything left on floors or coffee tables.and whatever is outside which is dangerous for him. What can we do. the BIGGEST problem is he runs away to the busy street. We lost him once but found him. I chased today and was so scared! A telephone man stopped him as he was steepping off into the busy street. It was like an angel being in the right spot. I am afraid my maxx will die. please help me and maxx. chad
I have over 30 years experience with animals. If I run across someone that is having a problem with their animal, I help them for FREE.
Cesar is only one person and it will take a lot of us to help people, so the pets don't end up in shelters. I won't work with the animal unless the OWNER takes responsibility and will work with me AND the animal.
I also tell people that if they are not going to SHOW the animal, have it fixed.
These are some of the things I do to decrease the number of animals that end up in shelters. I don't blame the shelters! Even kill shelters have contacted me to help them so animals don't have to be put down. There are too many unknowlegable owners who let the animal run the 'pack' and then turn the pet in when they are at wits end. Most can't afford to pay for help, but are able to get their hands on a shelter to take the out of control animal.
We are all responsible for doing our part to help the shelters!
Thankyou Cesar for doing your part to help us all with your insite wisdom and ability to train the population.
I want to tell you how much I love your show. Our last rott was a rescue, but this time around we ended up with a rott puppy. He is now one. We have taken him to all of the classes our dog trainer provided, however, I have learned more about other behavior problems that he does have that our trainer did not provide us with, which has been successfull! We are still in the process of training him. He is a frinedly dog, and wants to play with other dogs, however many dogs become aggressive around him, and they have bit him and caused him harm. I feel it is the way our dog approaches other dogs, he tends to rush up to them. He doesn't jump on them, and he always goes into the "play stance". All of the owners of the other dogs, say that their dog has never attacked another dog, and gets along with other dogs well. If you could ever do a show or mention about how to handle this situation would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Cesar-
My husband love your show. We have it TIVO'd for every episode. I actually used one of your tactics at our dog park with my hound-mix. She was a bit aggressive with a puppy and I got her to calm down and play nicely after using your method. But what I'm really interested in is knowing how to keep my dog from jumping the fence! Once she's over the fence, she runs all over the place and won't come back. I saw your show about how bored she probably is especially since she is a hound breed. Anyway, love your show! Keep up the awesome work. :)
About aggressive animals in shelters:
I used to work at our local SPCA. We had 2 pit pups, around 6 to 8 months old brought in. They were "wild". Evidently, they were born in the woods or whatever and had not had any human contact. These sisters would not let you touch them or come too close to them. I have, evidently, a dog whisperer nature and had never had a problem with ANY other dog at the shelter until these two arrived. I tried, very patiently, to tame these two little sisters and had gotten to the point where they were comfortable, though still a bit wary, with my being in their pen. I could VERY briefly touch one of them though the other would still act as if she would nip if I tried to touch her. After three weeks, the board members decided that these sisters were unsalvagable and needed the pen for other incoming dogs. They had these girls put down without asking anyone's opinion. They just decided. I quit the shelter and will not go back. There was plenty of room for more dogs. They just didn't want to use up any more resources (free donated food from Eukanuba) for these pit pups. That was their excuse. Sometimes, you can't change things as one person. We all definately need to educate MORE people. I will try again, one day. Maybe when the board members have changed with other, more humane and intelligent members.
I was reading the comments on the humane society and how we should all do our part. I plan on it :) My one goal in life is to own a center to rehabilitate dogs. I've had this dream since I was a little girl. It came from going to the local animal control shelter and I wanted to take home a 4yr old German Shepherd female. The shelter refused to put her up for adoption because she hated men . She was taken away from a man that used to beat her how can she not hate men from an experience like that? She just needed help. :/ They put her down and I cried for a week. Cesar has shown me that my dreams are possible. I am at this moment saving every penny I can to attend one of his seminars. As a starving college student this is going to take me awhile to be able to pay for the seminar and all the costs to get down there and hotels and food. lmao but it will be worth it :D
HI Pam I think it's neat that you guys have your own dog whisperer:) in your town. I wish a dog whisperer would go help out Ainmal precinct they are in new york also. Pam do you know any other dog whisperer that could help out animal precinct? I seen about 15 to 20 dog put down because of food aggresstion. Now if cesar was there he would of had it fixed right away. bye for now Danessa
Cesar, you are the DOG MAN, you are amazing. I live in Houston, TX. I own a Vizsla and a GSP. The Vizsla I have had since she was a pup. The GSP I adopted from a kill shelter when he was 1 1/2 years old. He is the best dog. Your show has helped me so much with training my dogs. I know you don't answer emails so I was wondering if you would address some questions on one of your shows (I watch all of them). My adopted dog appears to be very well trained. The one problem I have is while walking him and the Vizsla (1 hour every) on lead, he will take off 10% of the time when occasionally I have him off lead at a park. Is there anyway to prevent this problem. I always make coming back to me a positve experience. My Vizsla never strays to far from me. Thanks, Lori
Talking about escape artists...
My cousin had wanted a dog for a LONG time and a few years ago she got a small Beagle mix only to find out the mix was a large hound and now her dog is huge. They named it Shiloh and let's just say if Shiloh were my dog I'd have been far past frustrated by now. Shiloh's problem is from the beginning she was babied from a near death experience. Her dog has Beagle Pain Syndrome and has medication for it and she also had to have hip surgery and she was under a year old. Now, the dog is HUGE and terrible because they are so timid they can't keep her in line. Shiloh needs a yard to run around in, but all they have is a cord because they have a neigborhood that doesn't allow fences.
Anyway, once this dog gets loose you have to run for hours to get her. The only reason they end up catching her is because her hip surgery slowed her down. Once they about missed their Myrtle Beach trip because they needed to take the dog to the kennel by a certain time and the dog got loose!!!
I know their problem, but they don't listen. The family grew up not understanding dogs and now they don't know how to control Shiloh. If they could learn to control her they could easily take her walking and help expell some of her exercise, but so far no success!
Caesar-
My husband I watch you regularly as do our 2 male goldens. Although we have few behavior issues with our dogs, you have helped "jumping on guests" with the stop line,in minutes! Also "leashing pulling" was corrected in a session. Thank you.
We have a question, one dog(2yr old, litter of 12) nurses his stuffed animals, twice a day regularly since he came home. If we take the stuffed animal away, he finds something else to nurse, ie; paper. We do nothing, should we stop this behavior
Cesar,
I can't thank you enough for the wonderful gift that your sharing w/dog owners. The hardest part for me has been not treating my dog like a child. The more I watch you the more I realize how selfish this is. What can I say your right. I have been walking my dog Cesar style and the results are nothing short of a miracle!!! I've had my shepard terrier mix for almost five years and am lucking he hasn't broken my arm. That's all changed now. He is perfect both inside and out. He has obedience classes when he was a pup but nothing changed his ways until I took my role as a pack leader. Thankyou a million times over. Your not on tv enough!!!!!!! We need you out here to in Detroit.
we have a new German Sheperd puppy. he bit a lot is this commman? what do we do?

Dear Cesar, I love your show!! I've been watching it for the last year. (2005) Your a genious, keep up the good work! The fact is though I have a shih-tzu named Chino and he's a real handful. We have no fence in our backyard and Chino loves to run away all the time. He can never play outside without a leash on or something holding him down because I'm afraid he'll run in the street and get hit by a car. I would love to play outside with him one day. Could you please help me?
Elena and Chino
Cesar,
I just found you show do you have a scheduled time slot I found it a about 3 or 4 a.m.
How do you stop a dog from eating pants.

I love your show Cesar and I believe you could help me with my Carin Terrier. How can I get ahold of you in regards to dog barking? I know you can't answer all questions but I really need help with my Daisy Mae she out barks my cock-a-poo.
Thanks

I have a 2 year old Boarder Collie. I don't know what to do with her. She jumps on you all the time. She herds and bites my hores till she draws blood and had bit the vet (twice), the mail man and the neighbor many times. We have to keep her locked up when we are gone. I feel so bad for her because she is such a loyal dog and she is the only dog that was able to get my daughter over being scared of dogs. She is very smart and very loyal. We have tried everything from kindness, leashes, harsh words to schock collars nothing seems to work. I even tried to see if Boarder Collie Rescue will take her and they said no because of the her problems. I have been advised by more than a few to put her down before a lawsuit happens. I also have a very pricey foal due next spring and I don't the dog running it through a fence. I am at a loss as to what to do. My vet said he would but her down and my husband said he would save me the cost and shoot her. HELP if you can her time is running out.
Thanks Gina

Cesar,
I found your show by accident and now try not to miss an episode. I have been a dog lover all my life and used to do some obediance training when I was younger.
I lost my beloved Lab Kaycee 1 year ago and have not gotten another dog yet. I wish I would of seen your show when she was alive. She was a great dog but by changing my behavior in certain siuations she could have been a happier dog.
I will eventually get another dog when I am ready. In the mean time I will continue to watch and learn from you.
You are the only person that has really made sense about dog behavior and training humans. Keep up the good work, you are truely a gift.
I love dog whisper . I just got done wacthing it.I love yah because you help people if there dogs have bad behavoir or bad atatotods.

I just wanted you to know how much I enjoy your show. You have such an incredible wisdom regarding the animal world. I try to use all your techniques with my 2 small dacsunds, Maggie and Pippin. So far, teaching them to walk on the leash with me in control has been wonderful. Now, I'm working on them not barking whenever we say "hello" to someone walking in the door, hearing the garage door go up or the doorbell ringing. It's working thanks to you. I can't thank you enough for all the insight. Keep up the good work. We humans need a lot of training!
Hi Cesar:
I justed to say that I really enjoy your show and want to tell you how inspirational it is for me.
I have learned allot, and I feel you are a very intelligent person and believe in your animal teachings. In turn I have used your guidelines in the teaching of my two Rottweillers (one I did get from a dog rescue).
I hope someday you will be in the chicago area so I can have the pleasure in meeting with you.
Best regards,
Lisa & Ken Smith
We're thinking of giving our Bernese Mountain Dog up for adoption in the newspaper. He is a very loving dog but he's very big and needs lots of attention. We've got a baby on the way and can't imagine dealing with the big lug and all his shedding hair, along with the baby. He's an inside dog and many probably believe he belongs outside. We'd rather give him to a good home than seperate him from "the pack" and put him out in the heat/cold. Any suggestions or feelings on the subject?

Good ideas will try em out.
I have a hyper and I mean very hyper jack-russell terrier and he's about 4 years old now. He was 6 months old when we adopted him from the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, and they said the previous owners didn't treat him very well, but I showed him kindness and got it back in return. He is a very affectionate dog. His only 2 problems are he likes to get his nose in the trash can by my bed & he has a bladder problem. He was fixed too young; I think. i really don't what to do about that. Do any of you?
I am fostering a Katrina rescue lab who is about 5 yrs old.
Where do I go to find information to get help in solving some negative behaviors. The 1st is nite time. He wakes us at 3 am just ready to go and play. He jumps and actually will crawl in bed with us. He also seems to possibly be afraid of the dark. There are two of us in the
household and if I go to bed 1st he follows. When my husband comes to bed later he seems to forget he is in the house and will jump us and aggresively start barking. He does this in the morning darkness also. Help...and thankyou
HOW CAN I GET CESAR TO COME HELP ME WITH MY 3 DOGS.
Cesar --
First of all, I want to tell you that your show is AWESOME -- you truly have a gift!!!! That said, can you please help us?! PLEASE ! ! ! !
We have recently had a new addition to our family, a female beagle. We also have a male (fixed) chocolate lab; he is 6 years old and has been the "only baby" until January 5, 2006. He has "friends" in the neighborhood, they are German Shorthairs, and he plays with them very well. The problem is -- he is SOOOO aggressive with the beagle puppy. He bit her ear, taking a chunk out of it, the first night she was here and tonight, she was trying to play with him and he bit her face, very hard -- her eye was bleeding. There is no damage to her (some bruising), but we are at a loss as to what to do. Any help you can give us would be very much appreciated. Thank you!
Hello Cesar, I really enjoy your show. I have recently started my own dog training business. I have studied books and practiced with my own dogs, and strays, since I was 10 years old. It's been 17 years. Finally I am getting into a profession that I truely love. I enrolled in a course online recently to become accredited and get some professional education. Dog training comes pretty naturally to me, and several of my blog veiwers and clients are happy with my advice. I'd be honored if you'd like to stop by and check out my blogs.

Regarding female dogs going into heat who are bleeding and how to keep her from bleeding all over your house?
My answer: If your female dog is bleeding and she is a house dog ... I buy cheap baby pull-ups, or baby swim pull-ups, cut a hole in the back for her tail and put them on her. When I take her outside on a lease, I just snip off the pull-up while she goes outside during her walk and put a fresh one on before I bring her back in. Sadie is a pit bull and very sweet natured.
About time someone else in this business thinks with their heads and not their heart. To many trainers and people treating people like humans rather than dogs. The old saying is true, Treat your dog like a human, he will treat you like a dog. I have been training for 25 years and I hope that other dog trainers start teaching about animal behavior and how to properly handle dogs instead of putting costumes on their pets and other crazy things. Keep up the good work.
I am fostering a Katrina rescue dog who I sure was trained
for hunting rabbit and squirrel. He is a very well behaved
dog and a big love. However, when taking walks in the country or even wandering in our back yard he is on to
a scent and continues following it. Is there any way to
break this so we can enjoy him while camping, hiking and
just sitting in the yard? We take him to the lake and he
is fine with the ducks and birds but the minute he sees a
squirrel its over. Need help here....aNY ADVICE
Dear Mr. Millan,
I know you have heard it a million times, but let me join the crowd and say that you are truly the best. You have a gift that is remarkable.
I just purchased 2 beautiful german shephards who are about 9 weeks now (2/5/09). Keys and Sax are... well, dogs being dogs I guess. Wow, I thought getting two would ease the pain of them leaving their parents. Yet it seems as though out of the whole litter, I must have chosen the only two dogs that have very little love for each other. I know they are trying to establish pack leadership and dog domination but somehow I can't figure out how I can become a part of the equation. They fight and forget I am anywhere around. Please tell me how I can solve my dilemma before they are so big and yet out of control. Please help me help Keys and Sax find harmony. Thank you.
We have a 1 year old German sheperd,he weights 110# he is so aggreive when someone comes to the door,we do not know how to hold him back, and try to answer the people how are scred to death!we would like any help you could give us, he is very good with the rest of the family, and our 4year old grandaughter.please help us .thank you Evelyn and Lou.
Hi Cesar. You Rock!!! My Fiance and I havn't missed an episode since they started. We can't get enough. Thanks for a great show that actually teaches us something useful. Now for my problem. My mother has a 3yr old german shepard named Buddy that likes to run away from home and visit the neighbors. My mother is in her sixties and can't be very active with them. It started when she got another dog, a black lab pup named Milly. As a result she has to place them in the garage. When she lets them out they stick around for alittle while but will disappear at random. She hates having to lock them up. All of our previous dogs, which we have always had at least two, have never behaved like this. Its become a real problem as the neighbors are getting tired of having to catch the two of them and bring them back home. I hope, wait... I know you can help with this problem. We hate not being able to let them roam freely in our farm yard. Thanks for everything Shawn.
Cesar,
I have searched high and low to find any book you may have been a part of. My gf has a pit bull/lab mix that has some dog issues and we really would like to correct it. If there is any way for you to get in touch or even guide us in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.
I intend to further my studies after I graduate with an undergrad degree in Pre-Vet to go on to get my masters in animal behavior. Are there any suggestions on where to go or websites that could possibly help me out?
I love your show and thank you for all the good you are doing. AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THAT DADDY IS A PIT!!!! WAY TO SHOW THE WORLD THAT THEY ARENT MEAN OR HORRIBLE DOGS!!! Keep up the great work and I hope to someday follow in your footsteps.
Dear Mr. Millian,
Please, we need your help!! We have 2 beautiful dogs. One is a 3 year old cocker spaniel named cooper, and the other is a 6 month old pitbull named bo. Cooper I saved from the animal shelter it was his last day and I couldn't pass him by with those beautiful eyes.. Anyway, our problem is with our pit. He pee's in the house. Not only in one spot he goes as he is walking, spraying it everywhere. We have taken him to the vet thinking maybe he had a bladder or kidney problem but all was well. We had him trained professionally, still no help, we even had another trainer come talk to us about him, but they wanted to start obeince all over again and then they still couldn't be sure he would stop peeing. We crate trained or well tried and failed still, he pees in his crate on his bedding and still lays on it while it is still wet. We love this dog very much and don't forsee ever letting him go, we just don't know what to do about the peeing. Please help us. I have tried every way I can to get in touch with you. Mybe this time I can you..

Hi, 2 of my friends told me about your show. Im going to start training this one guys dog so i think your show can teach me a lot about training dogs.
Thanks,

Hey, my pambroke welshcorgi dog is 11 months old and has been bleeding from her behind for about a week. Since she is so young, I am worried if there is anything wrong with her. Please help me figure out what I should do to help her and what exactly is wrong with her.
Thanks,
Sarah
Ceaser....I soooooo enjoy and learn SOOOOO much with your training BUT PLEASE.....I have not seen a segment on potty training! I have not had trouble training other dogs (crate training) but have a 12 wk old female Scotty and she is "IMPOSSIBLE" to potty train!!!!! I probably started off wrong by trying to train her on puppy pads BUT EVEN with the pads she is IMPOSSIBLE"...also trying to train to go outside since THAT didn`t WORK and still yet she will outwait me! the only time she will potty is at rising up in the am....she "does" sleep with us at the foot of the bed and "holds ALL night!" In her crate she pees right on her blankets! I REALLY am at my wits ends! I also have a pp Chinese crested who is a 1 yr old wonderful dog. ....never any problems... ANY suggestions are so welcome! THANK YOU!
Cesar,
I have truly mastered control of walking my dog which is very important after moving from her previous freedom in the woods to being an apartment dog...
She used to actually respect our carpeting in the apartment, it seemed. Now, all of a sudden, Bailey urniates on our carpet daily whether she's walked extensively or not.
Once upon a time our family could leave for 48-hours, come home and not find a "Bailey" accident.
I've never seen you address behavioral urination and bowel problems Cesar. Please do, Thank You, Robyn
i have a 3 year old dog and i can't get him to stop peeing in the house i put him in his cage and he pees in there too he pees on the floor too when he pees in his cage he drinks it befor i can clean it what do i do help help ???????????
I have a 3 year old female Jack Russell terrier that is the joy of my life. I took her to puppy training classes when she was a pup & she performed beautifully; in fact, she won a blue ribbon. The only problem with her is every time the door is opened she tries to run away. She comes back when she is good and ready. I swear she laughs at me while darting across streets and across neighbor's yards. Nothing will entice her to come back. I am absolutely terrified that she will get hit by a car. Someone, please help us!!!!
My Mom one night came home while I was doing my homework with a 4 month old pitbull and pug mix who (since she had been out in the rain so long) was now scared of it and wouldn't go back outside. she's stayed with us for a while now but were trying to look for a suitable home for her. Nobody will take her just because of her breed. We don't want her to go into a mean home where she will be ignored of used. any idea's? She is super active and loves to play tug-of-war with my other dog. That gets alot of her energy out. She's so tired after a while of doing it she lays down on the sofa and falls asleep (she snores really loudly) really quickly.
My GSD is a runner and does not come when called. On 3/08/06. My dog caught sight of the mail carrier he struggled with me as I tried to get him in the house, but he slipped thru the collar and ran after the mail carrier.
There was no physical contact(thank god), but he gave the carrier a run for his money. The carrier is also to blame because he kept running and screaming. All Caesar did was run circles around him barking then ran into neighbors yards. My dog has spent 2 weeks at doggie boot camp. He did ok for a short while. I get stern with him but he seems
bullheaded. He destroys everyrhing in the house. What I'm
really afraid of is that even though he did not attack the
carrier I believe some day he will or a neighborhood child.
I love my dog and I'm willing to try anything I don't
want to lose him vie court order or otherwise. Can you help?
What is the best food for minpins? My son has 2 minpins, they are 3 yrs. old, and he is constanly having trouble with his dogs having digestive problems, to include vomiting, foul smelling breath, and constipation. Should he make home-made food for them, such as ground turkey and rice? The dogs are not as active as they should be, because my son works during the day,so the dogs spend a lot of time in a crate. I have heard that food that is too high in protein acts like a shot of caffiene with dogs. Is this true? Any advice you have to offer would be very helpful. Thanks
After watching the TV show, I thought to come to this site to see if I could be steered toward some advice on how to get my dog to return when I call him. He walks along nicely on the leash and is a cooperative and obedient dog in the house or back yard, but.....
When in the front yard (where there is no fence) he runs away and does not respond to my calling him back; and if I let him off the leash at the park, he runs off, and calling doesn't work. He usually returns in an hour or two. Any help for this?
We have a German Shepherd who will be 2 in July and overall is well behaved and very loving. The issue is that he chases and barks aggressively at pretty much anything that moves especially: cars, people on bikes, treadmills, etc... He gets a "crazed" look on his face and his eyes glaze over and he will not respond to any commands. I am open to ANY suggestions. Thanks
I have a 1 year old dog that we picked up from the animal rescue. We brought Casey home when he was 7 months. This dog is a border collie cocker spaniel mix breed. His major problem that he has since ovrecome was submissive urination. As he adjusted to his new life here at home he stopped doing that....but other behavioral issues have developed. We got another puppy from the rescue recently and they are both best of friends. Casey has become very destructive recently. He rips out the sprinkler drip lines, and eats the plants. We just installed this backyard at the house (Casey got to see it from dirt to finished product). When we leave the house we normally put him in his crate (which he loves) but occaisionally when we expect to be out for several hours we leave the dogs out so they can play. This has only happened a couple of times and I think we have seen the last of it. When we left them out of their crates last night they must have went crazy when we were gone. Casey ripped out the new sprinkler lines I put in (they have been replaced maybe 6 times due to him pulling them out of the ground, destroyed the roses we planted that day, and somehow got up on my brand new desk and destroyed the surface of it. I think we are dealing with a terrible case of seperation anxiety. We are runnng out of patience with this dog and dont know what to do. We feel we have given him a great chance here and love him dearly, but we are at the end of our rope.
Hello, I am very interested in finding help with my Pom, Austin, he goes extreamly crazy at the sound of a pin drop, if someone even as much as gets out of a chair, he starts barking, PLEASE can someone Please contact me on what are the options as to getting him some help, just to give you some back ground, he has gone through different types of training, from going to pets smart, to actually having a personal trainer come to my home to train him, and still nothing, also I myself have read quite a few books on Pomerainians and there back grounds & different ways to train them, and so far nothing has worked. I also have a female Pom, she is six months older than he is but she is half his size. I would really appriciate your help! Thank you for your time, Sonia Velez

I have a long hair dauchsund that will pee on my foot when she first greets me after not seeing me in awhile. I take her out first thing in the morning - she is in a crate. She will pee outside when I take her, but I can not control her when she is inside. She also will pee on my area rugs. How do I get her to stop doing this? It is very annoying to have to wash the rugs all the time. Thanks!

Hello,
I have a 10 month old Cockapoo. It's a good thing she is so cute, because her peeing issues are making us crazy. My husband wants to get rid of her... I have to make sure that I've tried EVERYTHING before I agree to his wishes. She is for the most part house trained, although she still sleeps in her crate at night because I don't trust her. We have two major issues. #1: She likes to pee right outside our door, on the concrete. We can't get this to stop, even though we've trained her to pee at a designateed spot in the backyard. #2: (and most importantly) She pees, what apprears to be a full bladder, when she see anybody new, or anytime we go near her with any excitement. I know this can be common in Cockers, but I thought she would grow out of this. It almost seems like it's getting worse. I did take her to the Vet. She did have a bladder infection. But it didn't change anything when she was done with the medication. PLEASE, PLEASE HELP. I don't want to get rid of this dog. You are my last hope.
Thank you for your help.

Cesar,
My husband and I are using the things we have learned from watching your show with our 3 year old Syberian Husky, Princess. We rescued her a year ago. She is a runner. Once she escapes she is gone for 6 or 7 hours. If we track her down she runs from us. She has a chip implanted and a collar ID. We walk her daily. She either returns home on her own or walks into a store with her foot pads bleeding and waits until I retrieve her. She also chooses not to come when we call her in the house most of the time. She is a beautiful, gentle and loving dog, but as independant as a cat. What is your take on shock collars? She is missing at this very moment for the first time since last fall. We have had great successes with many different breeds but never this problem.
I have a three year old german shepherd who has been crated since he was a puppy - he LOVES his crate - has no problem going in there - I have a dog walker that comes during the day to take him out while I am at work. About two months ago my dog had an injury to his leg and had a bandage - I started taking him to work with me two days a week - which he loves. Since I have started taking him to work he has peed in his crate a few times on the days that I leave him at home. I have had him tested for a UTI - negative - I think at this point it is a behavioral thing - I have steam cleaned the carpet in the area where he urinated - there is no smell left there - but he is still occasionally peeing while in the crate - does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to get him to stop this?
I have a great dog'Gizmo".part border Collie and part Australian Shepard..he will mind me and do almost everything i ask of him BUT he is a door darter..if im not real careful he is gones in a split second..he did this the other day..im 62 and he caused me to fall and i got some injuries from it...i need some help on how to stop this other than tieing his feet together..j/k..
i love this dog..hesalso agressive to people when he gets out and will not respond to comming back...but in the house hes a dog with wings...
any help will be appreciated

we have two Great Danes and we live in Bayside Wisconsin. Our dogs are a little over a year old and are going CRAZY lately. We dont understand how this happened. Berry our female has run away and bit about 4 dogs to the point where they have been paralized of fear. She has also bit a little girl which is our next door neighbor. It is so hard to manage these dogs and 3 young kids. Diesle our male dog is mostly calm but can get out of control sometimes. They are very friendly towards people they know but other dogs lately after she had her heat has been tough. Please contact us as soon as possible. I watch your shows all the time and constantly get yelled at from my wife because i wont come upstairs! If there is any how possible that you can come and help us you dont understand how much we would all appreciate it.

Hi Cesar
We would love to watch your show, unfortunatly we can not watch anything on TV that has animals in it! Our dog barks growls, charges and will bite the TV screen. We have tried everything short of a shock collar yelling, talking, spanking, leashing him, and our vet suggested throwing rolled up newspapers(now he barks and ducks). Anyone have have any suggestions on what to do?
Thanks
Hey i have a germen sheperd and its about 12 weeks old and is a little skinny.thats not the problem...i fed it some dog chow like the hard round ones and later he vomits it...wat do i do???
Cesar,
I love your show & how you handle both owner & animal. You're always positive.
I have a question that I am very serious about, I volunteer at our local shelter, I'm foster mom to kittens who are in need of extra care from more food to behavior - I wasnt to adopt my little kitten, who's a little over one month old. He and his sisters had a rough start, the girls are back at the shelter - he's still with us. Very happy well adjust kitten considering he was very ill with infection from his leg that went thru' his whole body. I want to keep him forever HOWEVER, I'd like to rescue Duke a chocolate lab from the shelter also. Is there a resuce group that would help ??? I'd like funding to help with all the animals that can't find homes right away. Duke is 5yrs. old & neutered. Kitten Rocky needs to be at the right time.
Thanks for the great pack you have & help us to be good pack leaders.
LUV, Nan
