Are the Rules Different for Puppies
As the father of two boys, many parents would agree that they can be a handful in a small house. I admit, sometimes it's easier for me to control my pack than my kids, but my boys Andre and Calvin are growing up to be wonderful human beings and I credit that in part to teaching them rules, boundaries, and limitations from the start. Every child development book you read will tell you kids crave structure and rules, and those rules have to be applied early and consistently! You can't just start setting rules when they are teenagers, right? So why do we let a litter of puppies do whatever they want, then expect them to obey? Pups six months and older are already in their "teens!"
The second you bring a new puppy home, start implementing rules, boundaries, and limitations so they understand what is expected of them from the beginning. Puppies are much easier to balance because, although some pups do show dominant tendencies, they don't seek a leadership role at that age and would much rather follow. So no matter how cute they are, give your puppies proper rules from the get go. They will love you for it later.

Thank you for this one. I just crave so much more information from you. I have a Corgie puppy, and a German Pincher puppy that I have been working with. I just don't know where the line should be drawn. Do I allow them to play rough in the house? The Corgie seems to be more aggressive right now, should I let allow her to be? She is five weeks older. We walk them everyday, along side us for forty five minutes a day. We let them run in the dog park for ten minutes prior to the walk, is this ok? What do you think of dog parks? I know you can't answer this post, but could you add more info to your blog. These two pupppys are my first on my own and I want them to have a dog life. I want to do it right the first time. I record your show everyday and watch it over and over again to pick up everything I can. I do want to say thank you, and I cannot wait for you seminar this weekend.
Hopefully I can get some help with my puppy.
We recently got a 6 week old Rottweiler pup for Christmas. I had a male and female Rottweiler years ago and they had pups together so I have been around this breed a while. While I am no trainer, these dogs were very gentle, great with the kids and respected me.
This new puppy has a mind of her own!! I have tried “no”, growling, biting ears, shaking a can with the penny in it. I’ve tried the gentle pull up on the leash, holding her down…..everything I have been advised to do.
She is very good with dogs, cats and children but tries to push her way around me. She is a pup but when I do say no to biting and healing me she growls and bites. She really gets wound up when she is tired. I then put her in her room and she is asleep in seconds.
What else can I do to achieve the dominant role?
I am really tired of growling. Does Cesar have a puppy training books? I really want to curb these bad habits before they become dangerous.
Kelly
Hi Cesar,
My family and I enjoy watching all of your shows. We are learning from all the mistakes that us humans make in not being dominant with our dogs. Also training your puppy since the minute you get them. I couldnt believe how inporatnt it is to exercise your dog daily and be consistant in what you do. I was reading about your life in Mexico and its a coinsedence that my father which is 65 was born and raised in Culiacan tierra blanca,Sinaloa.
I wish one day we could actually get to know you at your place in LA i was raised in Gardena and Now i am 26 and have my home in Palmdale,CA my parents live with me as well as my wife and 2 kids.
My wife and I absolutely love your show Cesar. We discovered it about a year ago, shortly after we were given an English Springer Spaniel puppy for Christmas by a relative. Sounds like a bad start, but it actually was welcome.
We had been training the dog, and he learned very quickly, you know, the basics; sit, come, stay, down. After he mastered those, we started on a few other things. And boy is he smart! He knows so many words that we now have to spell them when he is nearby. It's like having a toddler.
Luckily, we found the show while he was a puppy, and we were able to correct some of the things we were doing wrong, like we were giving him affection before discipline and excercise.
Just as we give our children boundaries and rules, we give our pets rules to. I grew up with dogs that had the run of the house, and I didn't like it. I never liked dogs on the furniture/beds (nor does my wife), and we stand firm on that. Once you set the rules, even if it's just one rule, you establish yourself as the alpha member of the pack. Once that is established, everything else is easier. I have even "bitten" my dog on the neck, and occasionally do so now, when he needs reminding who is the boss. We even taught him that he is below the cat!
We have learned alot from you, Cesar, and we will continue to watch your show, to help reinforce our training techniques so that our dog is happy and balanced.
Now, the only question remains is do you have any advice about cats?
Kudo to Cesar!! I was just thinking about how similar it is to raise a child and to raise a puppy. Setting balanced boundaries works for both situation, although children could lie to parents. In other words, some kids seem to pretend they are following the rules in front of the parents and violate the rules when the parents are not around. Dogs do not do that. Maybe that is why I am more patient with my dog than with my child. Ha.
I think all episodes are filmed in California. I wonder if that affects that way many owners in the show feel about their dogs. I live in Midwest and there are a lot of folks whow grew up in the farms here. Many of them seem to have different ideas about owning an animal. (I am not criticizing!) Dogs are dogs no matter where they live, but humans could have different ideas/attitudes depending on where they live. I am curious.
what is the best method of introducing a second dog (same breed-same sex) into home//////////
I whole-heartedly agree with Ceasar on this. We have learned the hard way that a puppy should have the same rules, boundries, and limitations. When we first got our now 9 yr old Lily from the animal shelter, we had another, older, dog. She was a very playful puppy and she would tug on the older dog's tail and fur. When he would get tired of the playing, he would snap at her, letting her know that it was time to stop. We made the mistake of correcting HIM. We did not want him to hurt her. We did not understand that he was letting her know about the rules and limitations of the pack. (We didn't have Ceasar back then.) Eventually, the older dog decided that he was tired of putting up with her, so he actually ran away! Now we have learned how to show her the pack order. She now sees us as the pack leaders. Sometimes. The challenge is not over. She still tries almost everyday to become the alpha female, but I am not giving up. Thanks to Ceasar we have been able to correct some of the remaining quirks that she has. If you do not mold a young tree to grow straight, you cannot correct it when it is larger. Thankfully, a dog is able to be molded into whatever the alpha leader wants it to be with consistent rules, boundries, and limitations.
I have a new puppy coming home on Saturday. I have Cesar's DVD, which is great! But I do have one question.
I plan to paper train this puppy, an Italian Greyhound. If I do plan on doing this, should I, or CAN I also take her out to go to the bathroom?
My reasoning for the paper is so that if I am working late, or out with friends, she can be comfortable.
Thanks a lot!
If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a pack to raise a dog...:)
Well I hope everyone is correct...I have lived with dogs all my life now I am married and my wife wants to have kids. She has been teasing me latley saying Our kids will be the first to sit-stay and come when called.
Here's a little cautionary tale on how important it is to give puppies rules, boundaries and limitations:
Awhile back, my aunt got her first Lab, a puppy she named Godiva. She was under the impression that puppies grow out of "bad" behavior, especially "perfect" dogs like Labs.
I tried to tell her, from 2600 miles away, that even 2 month old puppies need rules, boundaries and limitations -- and the biting, jumping up and using her as a toy was not just a "puppy thing," that it was establishing Godiva as the pack leader. Of course my aunt blamed the "stupid dog" for not responding to her; my aunt wasn't using the calm assertive energy she used throughout her 25 year career as a nurse. I worried that the situation would get dangerous.
I'm a fan and bought myself a copy of "People Training for Dogs." I know that I'm not a perfect dog owner; I still have much to learn. I have a passion for learning and it's a joy to watch Cesar work. And I've had dogs all my life, and feel a strong rapport with them, so the more I can learn about them, the better. His techniques work when applied consistently.
After I watched the DVD, I knew she needed to watch it, over and over, because this is exactly what she needed to hear. So, I ordered one for my aunt -- who has plenty of time to watch it and learn now...
Why?
She's now on medical leave, recovering from a broken leg, after she lost control of her dog and the leash wrapped around her legs. It could have been far worse. Ironic timing... I'm hopeful she'll learn from Cesar's DVD and be able to become pack leader.
I can't wait for the August 19 seminar. I am SO going to be there. :-)
I am happy for Cesar Millan shows, I have seen them all and still watching the new ones on Friday nights. I haven't have a dog since I was a teen, I am a mom of four and 2 of my kids are gone for good to college and work, and I have 2 still at home but they dont need my attention since they are teen adults.,,,, I am so ready to have a dog again, it is been a long time, and I want a puppy, a small breed, I hope that all that I have learned from Cesar Millan be applied to when I finally get a puppy, wsh me luck.
We got a Shih Tzu/Yorkie mix puppy at 6 weeks old. We are setting the rules, boundaries, and limitations, however even after several months with us (he is now 4-1/2 months old) he continues to have what we see as a serious aggression problem with people. He takes the submission role when around other larger dogs. However, with us he thinks he's a 150 lb monster. He's good on leash, sit, stay, etc., and plays great, but when he wants his way to jump up on the couch, try to eat the remote instead of chewing a toy, or decides our toes and fingers are much more exciting than his Kong, he bites and he bites hard without giving up when we verbally correct him. We have been told to muzzle him and put him in the down position, which we do. When we first starting doing this he would assume the submissive role very quickly, we would let him go, and he'd bite again (he knew that "acting" submission would equal him being let go). Now we are holding him down longer which seems to help, but this is an ongoing daily struggle. He was bit by a dog at about 8 weeks and scratched by a cat at about 11 weeks and we are wondering if this has contributed to the aggression. Any help or response would be so greatly appreciated. One vet told us we should just put him down. When I heard that I couldn't control the tears. We switched vets, have him in puppy class, and are trying to be very consistent but would appreciate any words of wisdom which would prevent this blessing to our household from becoming a nightmare who hurts someone.
Several of Cesar's articles can be found here for those of you that would like to have something in writing to study or print for quick referencing.
KCC, thank you so much for that link.
I am in Taiwan and don't get to see the program, but the method Cesar demonstrated is priceless for the work we do here. That link is going to be a great resource for me.
Many thanks,

Sean,
You're welcome! I'm glad you found it helpful!

we got a st. bernard puppy about two weeks ago and she is now about ten weeks old.all she wants to do is bite us our ears our clothes... we have watched a video that says to stop all play for ten seconds and then resume to show that it is not acceptable...however this does not seem to be working! all she does is go off and find another toy or bark until we turn bac around...im so lost as to what to do! HELP! one more thing...she doesnt like to walk on a leash and no matter how hard we try she just wont walk beside me! how do i break her and get her to do what i want?! please help me!
Three weeks ago I picked up my 7 week old german shepherd.About 2 weeks ago she started to bite.People have said she is teething. If I try to stop her,by holding her muzzel or holding her down saying no it does not work and she seems to even get agressive. What do you say I should do.Also my 14 year old border collie is going nuts. The shepherd is driving her crazy. And I have alot of barking in my home. What should I do for this situation.
Hi Richard-I have had 3 German Shepherds over the years, and to correct unwanted behavior when they are that young, you start by firmly grabbing the scruff of the neck and shaking them at the same time firmly tell them "no", their mothers do this naturally (well not the saying "no" part) obviously) when she wants to correct their behavior, I"m not saying shake the dog like you hear about when women and baby sitters shake babies too hard-just a quick firm side to side motion.
Just keep in mind GSD dogs are very tough and stubborn-mostly because of their high intelligence, but I still use this practice on my dogs now who are 5 years old and 3 years old and it still works.
I have a 9 week old border collie named zac he really is a lovely puppy i have been training him each day and he gets plenty of attention but lately he is showing signs of aggression and biting and nipping we have tried to distract him but he becomes quite hyperacted so we end up putting him in his kennel please can you advise me on a appropriate method i could use to try and stop this behaviour it feels like zac is trying to be the dominant one any help would be appreciated
We have a puppy that will not stop chewing on our eldest dogs ears. How can we make her stop chewing on his ears? Please help.Thank you
Every thing you say is true about bringing in a "pound" Puppy! I have worked in shelters for many years andcurrently do rescue work with german shepards and I always make sure the new owners understand the rules of bring home a new dog! Before your show came along I had a hard time getting people to believe me when I would give them instruction on bring them home. I have been using your way for along time and until the owners actually saw the results of what I was teaching they couldn't comprehend pack leadership. Now that I have your show to refer to they have a better understanding. Thank you Cesar for help the humans and dogs live as a happy pack!!!!!!
well, after 2 weeks I got a puppy, she is a pug, tan color, and named her Moly, she is almost 5 months and she has shown stuburness as a good pug, well, I have been practicing alredy boundaries and limitations, like the shhhhhhh and pointing finger, and she responded to submission, like she follows me everywhere, to close that I can trip, so I did the shhhhh, and indicated and claimed my space,,, and now she understands by keeping her distance from me,,, pretty cool, huh? I saw her a few times spinning around chasing her tale, and I shhhhhh to her and snapped her out of it,,, she literally stopped it,,,,, or saw her grabbing shoes in the mouth to play with them and did another shhhh and she dropped it, the shhhh works well, is a sound that gets her attention inmediatly,,, and I tell you when I raised my kids back 18 years ago, I shhhhh my kids when they were putting a tantrum, and they stopped it. the sound is powreful, hahahaha..... I have been practicing putting my fingers in her bowl when she eats and she doesnt do anything, meaning she is not agressive, obsviously she is a new puppy, no issues, I hope never, well the only thing is she whines when she is confined in the kitchen, I leave her 4 hours alone during the day, and there's nothing I can do about it, I guess she will get use to it. so far so good, and all thanks to ceasar millan my hero. god bless you ceasar! many many years of Dog whisper, my favorite show ever!!!!
I'm 64 and have been around dogs all my life, I just lost my girl at 15 and the heart is still healing. I watch Cesar (Tivo) all the time and it is warming to find someone who believes animals should be treated as such and with respect. Ceasar has shown a middle ground where there is give and take on both sides forging a bond built out of respect, not fear or love, but trust.
Ceasar, I am a huge fan of the show! My parents who live in southern cali, have a big problem with their english springer spanal. She has a problems being around kids and other dogs. They need guidence on how to be great pack leaders. If somehow you could help them they wouldn't have lock her up everytime there grand childeren come over. I never miss a show and I think you are great, and I hope I can meet you... excersise, disipline, and effection
Joel
Cesar Millan is amazing!! I never miss an episode of The Dog Whisperer unless absolutely necessary. I have used some of his techniqes on my goofy dogs. They rush the front door & overwhelm guests with their eagerness. It's getting better. I wish we had a "Cesar" in our area I could use some help!!!!
I have a 13 year old Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso mix.
He is very aggressive. Lately, he has started peeing on everything. There is no excuse for it, because he has
always gone on pee pads when we are not at home to let him out. He can be very mean. He has slept on the bed with us
for several years. My husband goes to bed earlier that I do
and the dog goes with him. When I go to get in bed, he growls at me and shows his teeth and snaps at me. I'm actually very much afraid of him and he knows it. He barks at me all the time. He has been banned by most groomers. I have found one girl to groom him but he is
quite a challenge for her. He has to muzzle him and put a hood (lamp shade) on him. Do you have any suggestions.
We have 2 puggle pups at 13 weeks old have had then since theyve been 6 wks one female and one male they were from the same litter theyve been at the vet 4 times and are getting their shots and check ups question is my male at times I wonder if he has all his hearing how can one tell? they had earmites and were treated by the vet and seem now no itching or drainage or smelly ears how can I find out or is he ignoring me? Also what do you do when he grabs on to my clothing so he stops it Ive tried giving him chewys or toy but will not budge a inch what are puggles like do you have an answer for me ? help. thanks Debra from Madison Wi.
As Kelly noted above I found a pit bull puppy in the Bronx, NY and rescued him. The first thing I did is take him staight to the Vet and get him checked out, thank God he's fine, but he is a loony. He is now about 5 months old I found him a month ago, I got him neutered, but he is out of control. I've grown up with all types of dogs from Pomeranians - Rottweilers and this dog has no manners. When I try some of your techniques with the hand to push him away he sometimes comes at me at barks and growls. But as soon as I stand up he runs to his area and just wags his tail. I am trying my best with him and I will not give up but he is giving me more grey hairs than I need. He's also very aggressive with other dogs, he thinks its playing but the other dogs get mad and I had to pull another pit bull off of him several weeks ago and as soon as I did that he went right back after that dog. He's got an attitude that will end up getting him killed.
My husband and I started watching the show before we got a 9 week old German SHepherd puppy. We watch it every time it comes on. We have learned so much. We have two girls one 11 and one 2 and "Duke" is just like having a second 2 year old. The show has taught us so many things that we impliment into our pups life. We have had him a short time, but are able to establish a wonderful form of discipline the Ceasar way. He will be a very large dog, but we are setting ground rules now while he is a pup and he is accepting his role in the family very well. We catch ourselves doing things the "traditional" way and quickly think what would Ceasar do. I believe this show will help people see dogs and their roles in the family in a new way. He has not chewed one thing up in our house since we have had him, if I notice him starting to chew something he is not supossed to have I just make a chhhh sound and he gets a toy, if he bites on us to play, (which is cute now but not when he is 100lbs) we confront it also. Thanks to this show we will have the best dog ever. My hats off to you ceasar for showing us dog psychology and allowing us a good way to have the dog of our dreams.
I started watching this show and I feel has helped alot with my method of training. Iam VERY curious to know and people have scolded me for doing so, why shouldn't you correct a dog for growling. People "seem" to think you are teaching the dog to avoid warning signs when you do this. I feel this is very untrue and Cesar seems to correct them on the show by a simple poke with his fingers. I correct my dogs but word has seem to got out that it is wrong and you should "never" do it. So what....we wait for an attack and then correct?? I feel a dogs growl bring tense energy to human and dog. Doesn't this grow to aggresion and an attack?
Mina sweetheart like cesar says you need to set rules bountrys & limations for you puppy. Why are you pushing him away for? when you push him away you say no in a firm voice say no and shh sound. You also need to show him that you are the packleader not him ok. You need to be alway calm & need to have possitve addatude & engry. I hope this helps Mina. cya Danessa
B Riley you need to get those puppy training pad to go pee on. You also need to teach him or her when they have to go pee they have to sit by the door and whine to let you know they have to go potty. Also if you hear them whining & looking for a place to go takie them out side right away. I hope this helps you out for now B bye for now Danessa :)
We have a 14 yr old Shih-tzu. Recently a new shih-tzu puppy was brought into the home to stay. The older dog seems to avoid the younger one and sometimes seems afraid of her, letting her back him into a corner.. He tends to try and avoid her. We have set stricter limitations on the puppy than the elder dog. Is there any advice toward allowing them to get along better rather than just avoiding each other.
I have four horses and a small farm. I just got a 12-week old Golden Retriever puppy and my greatest fear was how to teach her that she needed to stay out of the horses personal space without her getting hurt. After watching the episode with the Potbellied pig and hearing Cesar verbalize the communication between the pig and the dog, I realized that I should observe...and let my horses teach the puppy. I had to trust them because I couldn't watch her every second. I kept the puppy on a leash around them for the first two weeks teaching her stay back and no if she got close to the horse's legs. I set clear limits for her. After two weeks I let her go. She decided the barn was a great place to run around until the dominant horse in my herd gave her a little bite when she ran by his stall. Another horse did the same. She stopped running in the barn. She tried to grab the tail on another horse. He stomped his foot at her, she dashed away and didn't try that again. The horses seem to understand that she is a baby as well. She wasn't paying attention in the pasture and dashed headlong into the back leg of the herd leader. He swished his tail and gave her a look. The puppy lowered her head and slunk off. My horses have been together for over 5 years as a group. They have a clearly established herd structure and watching them allow the puppy become part of the herd has been amazing. She also loves finding and chewing sticks and will sit near the horses and chew her stick while they eat their hay. A horse will walk up and due to its proximity the puppy believes the stick is being claimed by the horse. She drops it and dashes off, sits a distance away and whines. What still amazes me the most is that when dogs show submission they will lie down and expose their belly. But horses show submission by moving away from the dominant horse. My puppy has learned to be submissive to the horses in the way they want her to, by moving away. I thought that I would have to be the one to teach the puppy how to behave around the horses but actually the horses have taught her how to be one of them.
I have a very nice German Shepherd. He is the large German/German type. He is usually well mannered and is about 4 yrs.old. The past couple of weeks he has continued to obey his commands, but for some reason sometimes looks a bit sheepish and growls. He can be shaking hands or giving you a kiss on the cheek, and he will make this grumbling growl, but no attempt to bite. I don't like it, and worry that an "alpha roll" type correction will make it worse. Any suggestions? He plays as normal, loves to run, but this I can't figure out. He used to act this way with strangers only. Thanks, JT

I have a 6 to 7 week old cocker spaniel. She loves to nibble and naw on our hands and feet. Should this be allowed?
I have a new puppy and my older dog is now not eating. He does not want to be around her and grawle at her all the time. I don't blame him. She jumps at him and nips at him wanting to play. They bark at each other. I heed help!
I have a new chihuahua puppy and hes just and wonderful, obidiant and playful pup, but one thing bothers me alot. He wont drink water. He eats just fine, but the only time I can get him to drink is if I put a litte chicken broth in his water, even then he seems to not be interested in it. Whats the matter?
Hello i hope you could help me.. We are a family of 6. My husband, myself a 10 year old, 8 year old and two 3 year old twins. We had just bought a little puppy to join our family. She is a lapso apso x shih tzu and is 11 weeks old. Since we got her a week ago she has been really good with the kids and she always follows me around the house and i find she is very close to me, for when i leave the room she cries when she can not find me. Anyways today i went outside for a minute and my little 3 year old boy opened the window in the living room so that he could talk to me when i was outside and the puppy (Zoe) was at the window with him and was crying cause i was outside and she was inside. When my little guy bent down at the window she turned and bit him in the face. So i told my older son to put her in her kennel until i got in the house and when he picked her up she started to growl at him...I have not seen her like that... she is very loving...so i dont know what to do..I told her she was bad for bitting and then kept her in her kennel for awhile...So i guess what im trying to say is...Is she going to become mean to the kids because she is so close to me and how can i stop that from happening again????
Hi, I have a nine year old rat terrior who is an incessant barker. He will bark all day long at anything and everything. Nothing gets him to stop. I've tried shaking pennies in a can, spray collars, muzzles, etc. People come over and I can't even have a conversation with them over his barking. I love him to death, but he would be such a better little dog, if he didn't drive me crazy! Is he too old to train not to bark now? Or is there something I can still do?
I live in Slat Lake City Utah. I was thanking about doing what you do when I grow up. Is it hrand to do what you do.
I am a newcomer to the show but I love it already! We have a new puppy and are applying Cesar's techniques and what a difference they make! And such simple easy things! My only problem is house breaking. He stays in the crate all night and part of the day, however as soon as he is free he has an accident, right in front of me. I always take him outside immediately after being crated and he still will go soon after on the floor. Will there be a show on housebreaking soon?
Thank you for your wonderful show!
What is the best way to housebreak an older dog or puppy?
I have a 3 year old female part chow, part Austrailian Shephard. My husband and I trained her with the paper method. Now, we still have to put paper down for her to use the bathroom, when we are at work and at night. We have tried moving the paper during the night first in hopes she would hold it all night. She does not. Is there Any way we can break this habit at this point. She does cry and beg when she wants to go out to use the bathroom, and we do take her out often. The times we have removed the paper, she will use the bathroom in that same spot, even when the paper is not there.
I just found your show this evening. I just got a new puppy thats 2 months old. Its part Pit part rottweiler. Jet is his name, the question is how to best go about potty training him. He uses the rest room outside most of the time, however he goes in the house some times. How can I get him to come get me when he needs to use the restroom.
I have a five month old Italian Greyhound. I think he might be teething. (His back molars are huge!) However, he is not eating regularly and only wants to drink water and chew ice. He has also been house broken for several weeks, but now he is having problems with accidents in his crate. Help! Is this normal behavior for IGs? Any info is appreciated! Thanks, Ann
A great way to deal with teething is to give them frozen vegetables (carrots are excellent for dogs). But you should really consult your vet, if your dog is not eating. Ceasar is the best at what he does, however, having a good relationship with your vet is the best thing you can do to keep a healthy dog.
Kelly I have found out that if it is a puppy that you want to housebreak is to pick the puppy up and as you are going to the front or back door to go out is to say "do you have to go out". Get them outside as soon as the get up in the morning, after they eat, after play, and when they get up from a nap. Watch out for signs that they are trying to tell you if they want to go out like going to the door or barking at you. Pay attention to these signs because if you don't and they have to go they will come in front of you and do their businees in front of you. Don't let the puppy have the run of the whole house until they show that they can be trusted. Our Springer is 11 months old and she has just been able to have the run of the whole house except our bedroom. When we are gone she still goes in a kennel but at night she sleeps in the bedroom with us in her own bed. Do not let the puppy sleep in the bed wtih you. We made this mistake with our last dog that we had put to sleep last year. I hope that this helps you out.

Has anybody ever thought about animal healing? It seems to have an effect on a dog's sensitive psyche as well as on its physical well-being.
I just thought I'll let you know about a truly gifted animal healer: www.distancehealer.net
-This Lady has been doing healing work on my Schaeferhund, it's really amazing work! A little off topic (sorry), but I am truly amazed about the healing work she has been doing. I recently moved to New York City, and was a little afraid about pollution, etc. The healing sessions really strengthened his immune system, he is more joyful than ever. I think she can help with other issues also.
Hi Cesar,
I was recently "given" a 5 month old pug...my niece who is in college owns him but is unable to take good care of him. I am very excited and want him to be happy in his new home. I have started training him to sit, laydown, "leave it" and also potty train him. However, I work about 45 minutes away from the house and am away for 8 a day five days a week. Recently I have noticed when I get home that he is fine for the first half hour, but later becomes aggressive by pulling hair and biting non-stop. I have tried being firm and saying "no biting, putting him on his back, ignoring him for a few minutes and praising him when he is calm. I've read so many things about positive dog training....what am I doing wrong???? I know its me, but i'm not sure what it is?
we have a 2 1/2 month old pitbull puppy and when she is around people she starts to chase her tail and bite on it till it bleeds. how do i correct this behavior?
This is for Henry about his puppy nibbling and nawing on the hands and feet. Try to break the habit of this now if you can becasue right now I'm having a problem with my Springer nipping and running because I really didn't stop her from doing this when she was a puppy. She thinks that it is a game, but my arms are marked up from it. Tell the puppy no bite and give him or her something that you want him or her to have. Don't ever hit you pup with your hands no matter what people tell you because they will become hand shy. I have found that nylon bones are the best for mine to chew on. I have heard stories about "Greenies" not being good so I don't give them to her. I hope that this helps you out and enjoy your puppy.
I absolutely love your show. My 12 year old male Shih Tzu's are well behaved and happy. My only comment is I
love your philosophy of life and how energy makes a difference. I didn't know animals were so intuitive. Do they really understand your moods and feelings.
Please expand your practice to include people. Every technique in your arsenal works on people too. When will
we see your show on TV again. I have not missed an episode.
Thank you

My 9 year old daughter got a 6 week old female Bichon Shih Tzuz puppy for Christmas. Her name is Honey. Honey pees everywhere. On the bed, couch, wood floors, ect.... We put her in crate at night and during the day now. She goes in the crate. The other day she was out and I let her in and in 3 min. she went. I tried the puppy pads. Sometimes she goes on them and other times not. My husbands want to get give the away. It would break my daughtes heart. Can someone please help me.
I have a 4 month old Westie that is very sweet, but hyperactive. I walk him 4 or 5 times a day, and it helps. His housetraining is going very well. But, he bites/nips constantly when we try to show him affection. The pokes to flank and taking to ground for submission, and especially the shhh'ing with the pointed finger has no affect whatsoever. He bites the pointed finger. He just goes right back to what he was doing before. Nothing seems to calm him. We are trying so hard to get him into a stable frame of mind, but nothing seems to work. When people come to the door, he goes ballistic wanting to jump up and lick them, and it doesn't stop until they leave, and I have tried the techniques that I have seen Caesar using on the show to no avail. I have to finally remove him from the room. Can someone help us? He is driving us crazy.
I love the show! The dogs are very lucky Cesar's out there rehabilitating us mere humans.
I have an eleven month old minature poodle albeit he's a large mini. My question has to do with his incessant barking. Our walks are 1-1 1/2 hrs. long. He walks. I ride an electric scooter. He barks at people, dogs, inanimate objects. I live on a very busy street and I've tried sitting outside with him. When people etc. pass by I tell him "quiet" and if he's quiet I praise and give him a treat. That's not working. Any help is greatly appreciated
Hello Cesar,
Next week I will be bringing home a Chihuahua puppy. I was interested in litter training the pup because I work full time and I know this breed is not fond of the cold. The only thing I am concerned about is if I litter train her she will not know that she can also "do her business" outside. I'm afraid if I try both I will only end up confusing her. Do you have any advice on this? I would really appreciate it. Thank you.
I just found a website for Westies that explained a lot. I guess his hyperactivity is common with this terrier breed and mouthiness is just one of their common puppy behaviors. Who knew? Otherwise, he is doing great on his housetraining and he is very intelligent and loving. This was just a case of the owner not understanding breed. I love the show, watch it every week, it has taught me so much. It is so inspiring that it makes you want to learn more.
I have a small chihuahua... very hard to potty train please help..
In the day she has no accidents but at nite their is always pee in tha carpet!!..
Please help.
To Gloria Mesa, I was wondering, is your Chihuahua allowed unsupervised free roam of the house at night? If so, this could be the problem with her having accidents at night. Your little one should be confined to a bedspace at night, it usually will not foul its own bedspace, wherever that may be. Just a suggestion. We gave just the opposite problem, an accident once in a while in the daytime, but never at night because he is confined to his bedspace. Hope this helps you.
We have two westies 4 months old that we cannot housebreak we take them outside and they do their business but once back in the house they go again on the floor, we cannot take our eye off them for one minute the male does it worse then the female he will go on your lap no sound to get down or go outside he just pees. We have a doggy door that they use during the day thats caged off so they can go in and out but if we leave them to much room the male will pee and poop on the floor instead of going out the doggy door. We tried crates but the male will just do it in the crate even if there is just a little bit of room. Please help Thanks
I've been around puppies and dogs all my life, but I have never come up against such a challenge my 10 month old Jack Russell Terrier Mix has gien me! I've tried every method to house train him that I could think of! Crate training, walks, scedules, showing him the mess and saying bad dog, i even changed his diet. What am I doing wrong? He knows when he's bad too, because when he sees that I've found the mess, he'll lay on his back and raise his paws to his face.. why does he do that? I don't want him to be afrais of me! Please Help!
i reallly enjoy your show . i am surprised at how most of his traning guides are so simple. i have a 12 week old malltese/shihtzu mix. we have had her for about 4 weeks now.
katie is still going to the bathroom on the floor. she also chews everything in sight. mostly chewing on hands and feet (mostly feet) how do i get her to stop. i watch her as much as i can for signs of potty time. generally ican see when she has to go. but sometimes when i bring her back in in a few minutes she potties on the floor.
what am i missing??
Animal Cruelty Heartline of El Paso is aimed at rescuing, rehabiliting and finding loving homes for animals (pets) that suffered from animal cruelty or neglect. Just recently ACHE rescued an emaciated pitbull from somebody's backyard and is now in a loving home enjoying the comfort of owner's that properly care for him. In just 2 months he has gained over 30 pounds and is a healthy - loving animal. ACHE received an abundance of media coverage from this one incident and continues to get it with every case it encounters. Sad to say it is a constant scene in our community. ACHE has successfully gained the support of the Police Department, District Attorney's Office, and other local departments in the mission to STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY AND NEGLECT in El Paso, Texas.
ACHE is still waiting on the non-profit status to be able to get more donations for this mission - all vet bills are being paid by the founder of the organization - which is a huge strain in her budget, one that she does not have. That just shows the commitment and love for these animals!
We are organizing a fundraiser this year and would love for Cesar Milan to be a part of it. There are many animals that need this training, but more than anything the OWNERS are the ones that need the lecture. Please let us know if this would be something that can be arranged - thank you for all that you do!

Hello Cesar,
WE just got a 2 yr old female shih tzu about 2 weeks ago. The family we got her from didn't have time to spend time with her. Or when she did get attention it was from their child who would carry her around by her neck. And she is great with everyone. Esp,when having to tolerrate my three kids. LOL But she has a very annoying habit of licking all the time. Which isn't too bothersome most of the time except when your in the middle of trying to type or write a letter. And when told no or sent off lap she will jump back up several time before finally giving up. Is there a med reason or is it just the way shih tzu's are? I guess it could be worst like she could bark all the time. But she rarley ever barks and when she does she sounds like a mouse.
I have noticed when sence we got her she will go pee in front of me however will not do the other unless she is put on her cain and left alone for 5 to 10 mins. Could that be caused buy being punished for doing in the house (by previouse owners)?
Dear, Mr. Millan
My dalmation has turned aggresive and last night he kiled my cat. He is extremly hyper and I was wondering if I could do anything to help him not be so aggresive with others animals and children. thank you Jackie
I like your site
Your site is very cognitive. I think you will have good future.:)
I have two miniature dachshunds. how can i set rules to them if they dont listen to me.helppppppppp
Hi, I have a 7 mth old puppy that I rescued when he was just over a month. He is my second dog. I am having some concerns with him and I am not sure what to do. At first I thought he was having "night mares" but it turned out he was anemic. So we have that problem solved. But he is now chewing on parts of his body till it bleeds. He is leaving horrible scabs all over his legs mainly. I am not sure what to do. The vet suggested oral medication but I am not comfortable with that. We go for a walk at least once a day. He does a major amout of swimming once we are there. I think he is very stressed out and I am not too sure why yet. But if I do notice he has exessive energy I will even take them both back to the off leash park for another walk. I just keep thinking there has to be a logical explanation for his behavior. But I don't know how to correct it? Do you have any advice for me without drugging my dog?
thanks.
hi, i was wondering what to do with my 9week old puppy when were gonna be gone for half a day/ do i leave it with our 2 year old dog or seperate them durin thi time ? weve only had the puppy 2 weeks.
For me, the rules are NOT the same with puppies. My 10-week-old spaniel puppy bites. Bites a lot and really really hard, too. So I tried Cesar's techniques that he uses on other biting dogs, but they didn't work. I wondered why, then I thought, "The rules must not be the same for puppies". But then I thought harder, and I think that the reason that puppies bite is because their gums hurt because their baby teeth are coming in. So my spaniel puppy and I lived happily together until he began to attack people. Now what am I going to do????

Running your dog pack IS easier than children partly because our children end up with too many poor quality "handlers" with conflicting ethics and rules in the schools and are often left to the "bully rules" mentality in the school yard. Been there done it! Running a large family is a lot easier than dogs for me. I have one fairly good, calm GSD male and a 1 yr old GSD pup who wants to take over not just on the family but on the whole planet. She is attacking other dogs even though she was socialized since day 1. This is a new one for me. She's "strong", not fearful. Luckily she is good with children

Ceasar, I watched your show for the first time last night. I believe you could really be a miracle worker on my dog Nirah.
( red nose pittbull )
I have Nirah & Rajah, both females and Nirah attacks Rajah any time she comes in contact with her or even any other animal. Dp to the attacks I have been bitten and so has my boyfriend. I love both of my dogs with all my heart and I just wish they could be friends again. We actually have to keep them seperate at all times and cover Nirah in her kennel when we let Rajah out. Nirah has busted the kennel door down and attacked Rajah.
I am just curious if you have any advice, or if you could help?
Please!!! Thank you

Sheesh.....can't people read?? All these questions and it clearly says "Cesar is unable to answer individual questions"
Anyway. I just wanted to thank Cesar for everything I have learned from him, just watching him on the National Geographic channel. He is WONDERFUL to watch and is a great teacher. The part where they show him roller skating with all those dogs is TOO MUCH!! I made the mistake of doing that with a dog I had a long time ago. Of course he cut me off and I was lucky to live through it! Ha!!
We now have a 9 week old red Lab. I had never seen a red one before. Adorable, but a mind of his own. He will walk beside you with a leash but his head is continuously knocking into your leg. If I let him go, he just wants to walk through your legs. Not sure what that is about but I will be getting a different kind of leash after watching Cesar. Not the kind that hooks to his collar, but the kind you slip over his head and tightens behinds his ears. I am looking forward to that making a huge difference in being able to control my little on. The good thing is that is aware he is NOT the boss in this family. :-) But he is incredibly loved.
Thanks again. Cesar, for all you do for everyone!

The show is fantastic. I have two four year old Chawawawas brother and sister. The male is very obedient, but not the female. But after watching a few episodes of your show I trained the female to listen to directions. It was unbeliebale, in just a few days she was trained, and I had been trying for four years to make her listen. The only problem I have at all now is getting them house broken. They go outside several times a day. But they still go in my home. Help!!!!!
I have two Westies, Beau and Baxter. Beau is two, and Baxter is one years old. Im going to get right to the point. beau is sweet but agessive, he will try to put Baxter in his place by attacking him. He also barks at the TV when he see's an animal or anything really. I love him so much that I would hate to see him gone fron me, when there is someone who can do something for him, what should I do?
Samantha.
My girlfriend have a 14 week old Yorkie. We have had him for 5 days now. He is doing great with going potty outside and remaining in his crate at night and twice during the day(3.5 hours each interval) at my place. He has cried and whined/barked the 1st couple of days when we close the door to his crate for the day or night, but has gradually gotten better - almost to the point of no noise. We followed some training advice to speed this portion along. We intend to introduce him to her apartment next week. Since she lives 5 minutes away from work, she can spend 1 hour with him during lunch. We plan on keeping him at her place Monday-Thursday and at mine the remainder. Since he is already familiar with my living quarters and going potty at my condo complex outside where there is plenty of grass, is it possible for him to acquire her surroundings and not get confused. We don't want to ruin what we have taught him thus far. She has a very small piece of grass and various planting beds with mulch immediately outside her apt. where he can go potty. The rest is asphalt.
