I read this blog all the time and faithfully watch your show (which I discovered only about 2 months ago) when it airs on Friday nights.

As a result of watching your show, I have become much more committed to walking my 2 Australian shepherds every day and working to train them to walk like perfect gentlemen. (Prior to watching your show, I thought playing with them in our large backyard would provide a sufficient amount of exercise.) By "perfect gentlemen" I mean, alongside of me and not dragging me all over the place. I have been very pleased with the immediate impact your training techniques have had on them thus far. Now I can actually walk both of them, holding their leashes in one hand - something I never thought I could do.

Anyway, I was SO PLEASED with those training results that I decided to take it a step further and bought myself a pair of rollerblades a little over a week ago. (Something I had never done before, I might add.) The first day, I had a friend walk my boys while I got used to the blades and then, on easy parts of the road, he would give me one leash to hold as practice. After the first day, I was able to continue taking them alone for their runs (while I rolled) - but only one at a time (my youngest has a bit more to learn before I try taking both at the same time).

The point I'm trying to get to is, when I took them rollerblading the same rules applied as when we were walking - no pulling and no walking ahead of me. They willingly abided by these rules - probably because they were so happy to be RUNNING with me. I did this because I thought this was the way it was supposed to be done. Plus, all the pictures I see of you rollerblading are from the front, so it's difficult to tell where the dogs are in respect to you.

Imagine my surprise when "we" (and I do mean "we" - my dogs lay down and watch the TV when your show is on) saw the episode that was just on this past Friday and I saw you letting Booker pull you on your rollerblades down the city streets. I was thinking to myself, "I didn't know THAT was allowed!".

So, Saturday morning, I took each of my boys out individually and decided to let them pull me. However, every time I slowed down, they slowed down too to stay alongside me because those were the rules they were given. {Sigh} Oh well, I wish I had seen that show a week or so earlier.

Regardless of this, I want to thank you for your wonderful show. I enjoy watching it every week and always walk away with some new helpful tidbit of information. Please keep them coming!

Yes, I should add that both of my boys have harnesses which I purchased for them when I witnessed all the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Even though I live in New Jersey, it got me to thinking about how I would handle an emergency situation and what would be the easiest way to get my two dogs and one cat to safety. I find it's much easier to control my boys with harnesses on. I can't explain it, I feel as though I have more control over their bodies and they seem to respond much better to my "directions" with them on. Of course, I should also add, with all this training we've been doing, it's much easier to handle them - period.

Now, if only I could find a "Cat Whisperer" out there. :-) LOL - come to think of it, that could be an easy job. Every episode would be someone saying, "Your cat really doesn't care what you think or how you feel about such-and-such. Feed him, love him, serve him, and you'll get along just fine."

What can I say? I am a dog-person that happens to also love cats.

I'm so sad about my Goose and Marlow. After two years of not fighting, they have started again, since October, and now it has almost become weekly. I've been watching Ceasar only for a month as someone just mentioned his training to me.
I have Goose on Prozac and a nylon muzzle which he wears when I'm home and both he and Marlow are in the house. Today, I thought I would attempt to walk them together, Goose with the muzzle and a choke chain. Marlow with just a choke chain. We have walked together without incidents in the past, but as I live in the country, I've been able to let them walk off leash. When they got into the car, Marlow attempted to mount Goose and then the fight was on immediately. They just fought a week ago. I knew I had made a big mistake, letting Marlow in the car first, and Goose second with the muzzle on. They fought for about 10 minutes which is short before, I broke it up, only by bringing Beau, Shepard/Lab mix, the oldest and biggest male out. While he pinned Marlow, I was able to pull Goose off of Marlow who now had the muzzle off. I understand the Goose is in killing place when he fights. This was a short fight, they've fought before for much longer. The choke chain was the only way I could pull him off. I am 53, and my husband was not at home. Goose is a small 50lb Pit/Chow mix and Marlow is a 70lb.Dalmatian/Boxer mix. The dogs have lived together for four years. Marlow is 8 and Goose is 4. The first two years they would fight off and on. They stopped when Rosie a Chow/Shepard mix came to live with us off the streets. She seemed to act as a mascot to the pack. (I have 6 dogs, three since puppyhood and three homeless. I tried to foster and place Goose and Marlow, but was unsuccessful after a year and kept them.

Marlow has been sleeping with me since he was a puppy. Goose hasn't in several years since he has been banned from the bedroom for previously starting fights there. I've given him a job to guard the house at night, in the living room. They have a doggie door to a fenced back yard, which is about an acre. I walk them daily, two shifts, three dogs on one walk, three on another. They obviously hate each other. Marlow insults Goose in dog language. He can walk by Goose and raise his eyebrows at him, like he is saying, "go suck on egg, idiot dog," and then a fight starts. They are horrible, violent fights. My vet is saying, both of them need to be on prozac and muzzled. I am heart-broken. I'm trying everything I can think of. I have searched for basket muzzles and can't find them. All my dogs have been neutered and spayed. I think the pack is out of wack... especially since someone dropped Grace, a four month old Pit Bully puppy off during Christmas. Goose, I know is a red-zone dog as I stole him out of a yard where he was left tied on a three foot chain with no water or food in freezing weather. Animal control would not intervene. I had been watching his neglect since he was a pup and gave the people who owned him and his brother, dog-houses, long leads, and supplied them with dog food for a year. It was a crack house and they eventually moved and left Goose there without anything. The other dog disappeared.
And now I'm thinking that Marlow may be a red-zone dog too. I adopted him from children with a box of five-week old puppies as he seemed sick and small at the time. I guess I began both relationships, with both dogs, feeling sorry for them and it has been hell ever since. I have used my savings on vet bills and am working a second job to keep up. I'm feeling hopless currently. :/ I'm afraid to tell my husband they've fought again. Any suggestions are welcomed.

Pamela, a few things to try:

Don't favor any dog in any way. Nobody sleeps on the bed- that elevates them to "human" status and sends the message that the one getting to sleep on the bed is more important, and also the leader, whether it is a dog that really wants to be the leader or not. Some dogs will unwillingly take on the role of "leader" if they feel that no-one else is stepping up.

Every time you feed them, feed a different one first. Don't feed them in the same order all the time, as that is also something that elevates one to status above the others. Think what mixed messages they're getting if the one getting fed first is not the same dog that's getting the status of sleeping on the bed? What are they to assume from all of those differences?

Nobody gets petted, loved, played with, etc...unless you decide to deign them with your attention. And you must call them to come to you. Don't let them initiate such contact.

Nobody eats until they have done some "work" such as a long, tiring walk. Even after everybody has walked for the morning, they should all be asked and expected to sit quietly awaiting their meal. The ones who are the most willing to calm down and wait get fed first.

Fighting is not to be tolerated and should result in "bannishment" form the pack for a time. The culprit(s) should be separated from the rest of you and from each other and ignored. Don't even look at them, speak to them, or touch them while feeding them or letting them out. Do not acknowledge their presence at all. Depending on the severity of the misbehavior and the way the dog is responding to this, you may ignore them for 5 minutes...or 3 hours...or two days. They are not allowed to rejoin the rest of the group until they have shown some kind of willingness to cooperate or relax.

Really, just try to treat them all exactly the same. NObody gets more petting than anybody else, nobody gets more treats than anybody else...no special sleeping spots, no special feeding order.

It does sound like they've had alot of upsets and shifts in their pack hierarchy due to comings and goings of more calm, stable dogs.

Frosty arrived from the shelter's "death door" a bundle of nerves. Our 17 year old Akita died a few months earlier, a calm, contained and contented pal to the end. Frosty was startled by rattling paper, a bird overhead, men (yes, all males were foreign and scary to him). His anxiety level was high, but our Akita had a bout with anxiety a few months before he died- would wake up and wonder and wander and whimper, could NOT sleep and the insomnia spiraled him downward. I gave him Melatonin, a natural substance, a hormone that reduces anxiety. It broke the anxiety cycle, he relaxed and could walk purposefully instead of wander, and he went back to a normal sleep pattern. We tried a few times with Frosty, not nightly or daily but once or twice a week, total of 7-8 times in a month. He could relax yet was alert and become accustomed to new surroundings. I think it helped me EXPECT him to be relaxed, also! He still needs a lot of work but has learned to play! Squeaky toys are no longer menacing!!!

I haven't lived with a dog since I was about 6 years old. I'm now 40. So I'm a bit apprehensive around dogs, mainly those that are barking at me. I don't know what their barking means other than they are probably protecting their territory. There are many dogs in my country neighborhood. Some chained (one by order of the town) and some not,and some enclosed by electric fences with collars (whatever those are called - invisible fences?). I wish my neighbors would watch this show. I think it's great. I think their dogs aren't great. Actually I guess I should say that the owners aren't great for not being good "pack leaders." I can't step out of my house without the neighboring dogs barking. It's not pleasant. I can't go for a peaceful walk up the road. I and one pair of dogs got over each other and weren't having a problem after my first son was born. I was able to take him for walks. But since my second son was born more dogs were added to the neighborhood. I couldn't take my sons for walks anymore. How can you get your baby to fall asleep with all of the barking? Ugh. Now that they are both walking we still don't go for walks because the boys and I are afraid of the dogs. (The bull dog, that the town forced the owner to chain, lunges on it's chain. I'm afraid the chain will break.) I was willing to take them. I armed myself with a billyclub, an air horn, and pepper spray. I tried to take my sons for a walk. I had one in the stroller and one walking next to me. My eldest son pulled away from me and ran across the road (thank goodness no cars were approaching!) back to our house as soon as all of the dogs saw us out in the road and started their cacophony. Needless to say, our health is impeeded. Thankfully we have a large yard but it would still be nice to go for a walk. Any suggestions? Any good books to read to understand what a dog is thinking, how I should behave when approached by a barking/growling dog? Oh, another thing! At my parents' summer place there are two rottweillers (spelling?). The male is usually chained, poor scary dog. The female is usually off the chain. Both seem mentally disturbed. My brother carried dog treats with him to be able to walk by their house to bring the garbage to the dumpster. There are other dogs that run free that don't bother anyone. The rottweillers and their owner are full-time residents, all of the other dogs and people are there only for the summer.
My brother had success giving treats to the rottweilers to keep them happy. I know of another who had similar success. I am wondering if it might be perceived as rewarding wrong behavior to the dog.
I'd been wondering where Cesar Millan was from - great accent!- plus how much his service costs. This blog answered those questions. If I had the money I'd fly him here and hire him to give everyone around here lessons.

I have been watching faithfully each week and have now gotten my daily walk with my rescued lhasa apso under control. I have often wondered if I missed it somewhere or possibly Cesar has never mentioned adult dogs who were never socialzed as puppies. I adopted Libby at 2 years old and she is a people lover. But she is definitely dog aggressive. Using our new walking technique works fine until we see another dog approaching. I know he says not to tense up but it's tough when she immediately starts hyperventilating and tugging violently at the leash. I have tried the SHHHING that Ceasar does but it does nothing. I have tried reversing our direction but that's not helping either. She just turns and continues to snarl. HELP! Where am I going wrong?

My Bullmastiff when he sees another dog, starts to throw a hissy fit and startes jumping up. What I do is stay really calm and I do in calm voice say ,"calm down." and really quickly he'll sit and actually calm down because of my energy. I'm leader and he's sees that i'm not getting all worked up so in the dogs eye, there must be nothing to worry about if the leader(me) isn't worried.

This is what I tell my mom, because she wonders how I can stay so calm. I just tell her, "I have the leash, I know the dog isn't going anywhere, so there's nothing to get all worked up about." That's what I tell, because it's true, if you have the leash then nothing should happen. You don't have to worry about the dogs escaping and attacking another dog if you have the leash. Also just think of it as a kid throwing a tempertandrum, that's what I say my dog is doing. So if your dog , jumps, barks , growls , whines, don't let that bother you. Just stay calm and your dog will really feel your energy and he'll calm down.

I actually love taking my dogs for walks and I purposely walk by other dogs, just so I can rehab them on any negative behavior they do in the presence of another dog. The only way to fix the problem is to face the problem. Avoidence is only a "temporary" fix.

That's why my mom loves watching me work with the dog in obedience class, because I'm so calm. It's funny all the other dogs will be going crazy and everybody's yelling at their dogs and the dogs aren't calming down. While i'll stay calm and my dog will be the first one to calm down because of my energy.
Just remember, stay calm and assurtive. You are the leader and are in control.

Barb - I also have a dog aggressive dog - we think she was undersocialized, abused, or just had to fight for her food . She was about 8 months old when I adopted her. I put her into a puppy class at Petsmart, just to get her socialized. The first class all she did was snarl, growl and snap at the others. The instructor told everyone to give my dog space at first. After each class she got a little less aggressive with her classmates and we let her interact a little more. After week 8 she would play with them all. She also did much better with strange dogs, but I am still working with her because she is not 100%. Of course, she gets praise when she is calm and nice, gets a correction when she is aggressive. She is not 100%, and may never be, but is much, much better.

Last night show was amazing. The dog park part showed me how special you are. I realized how little I know about dogs, in spite of the fact that I have 3, and my oldest is 5 years old. You can read dogs mind, all the dogs minds, even strange ones. I wish I knew, just like you do, what every position, placement of the tail, ears etc. mean, and how to react to it. I must also say that the doggie park in LA is huge, and quite beautiful. I live in a medium size town, but our doggie park is less that 2 acres, - divided for big and small dogs. Not much to run round.
Maybe you could do a show to teach what tail, ears, posture mean, showing teeth etc. I can pretty much say what my dog is thinking, but I am far from reading other dogs.

I too am going to get myself a pair of Land Rollers! I'm 48 and my 15 month old bichon is not getting enough exercise from our walks. He crazily runs around the house nearly every evening which tells me that he is not getting enough exercise.

Has anyone noticed that this season's Dog Whisperer episodes have a yellowish tint to the filming? The first year's episodes were crisp and clear. I really don't like the type of film that is being used this season.

I, too, was very pleased with the dog park episode. We own 5 dogs and I crave knowing more about dealing with their interactions with eachother. We adore Rottweilers,and I was thrilled to hear Cesar state that it isn't fair for the big guys to get blamed for a behavior while it is 'cute' for the little ones.

I totally understand the shows' liability statement in that people should not attempt to break up fights themselves; it IS dangerous. On the other hand, if a fight does break out, it is likely to escalate, and tips on difusing and handling it would be very welcome. If a fight breaks out you can't simply make a professional appear to help you!

While I would think several times over before breaking up a tangle of dogs unknown to me, I do--on occassion-- have to break up my own. We have one scrappy shepherd who is usually our flash point if there is a fight amongst our 5. We've been told to lift the dog's rear legs, as it throws off their balance. By replaying the segment several times (yeah, TiVo!) it appears this is what Cesar did. I actually have no fear of breaking up my own..my problem is being CALM and assertive instead of MAD and assertive!

On another topic, other parts of the blog and Cesar's show have made me rethink old wisdom. We always fed the dogs in order of their status in the pack... the alpha dogs first, the omega dog last. The consistency seemed to help maintain calm. By following Cesar's idea of most calm first, the omega dog would win the contest and get her food first. My question is then, does this later set her up as a target for 'being out of order' within the dog heirarchy? Other books dealing with dog-dog issues within a household suggest following the natural order of the pack; pet the alpha first, et cetera. This may well be a case of 'what works for your pack'.

Consistency and schedule help us a lot. We can not walk our dogs before work: we're gone by 7 AM and live in the northeast, where we'd have to walk them in the pitch black if we did it before work. After work seems to work fine, so long as they know it's coming. One thing we always do, when leaving, is to divide and separate. We never leave all five roaming around the house. We might put two upstairs, two downstairs, and one in the kitchen. Experience has taught us that they are capable of partying if left together.....!

The biggest problem we have is a problem domino-ing through the pack. For instance, one starts barking and you move to correct her and bam the next one goes off. I can never seem to interrupt the chain fast enough to stop it, especially if it's barking....any suggestions with regard to this would be welcome.

Anyway, I, too, would like to hear stories of some of Cesar's dogs, and would appreciated any and all episodes on dealing with multiple animals.

I love your show, I try to watch it every Friday. I am only 13, but I love dogs so much. I must read about them everyday it's not in my agenda it just comes up.

Anyway I have three dogs I take care of myself, two huskies and a Boxer, your show has inspired me to walk them as much as I can, although my backyard is bigger than my house they get so bored they end up ruining it after I clean the last mess up. It's hard for me to walk them everyday when I have homework and all these other things I have to do in one day.

Well I hope you keep make these shows because they help me with a lot of proplems that I have with my dogs.

I have been reading this blog for the first time today. I do watch Cesar's show from time to time and I love it. I have a situation that maybe some of you can help me with. I have a 3 year old lab mix, Rex, who is very sweat but very hyper!! He barks at everything, he jumps over an almost 5 foot fence in the backyard or stands on my son's bed and barks at the neighbor's dogs. He has broken out the screens in my house and sun porch because he jumps through them and has ruined 3 sets of blinds from the windows because his scratches at them. We have now had to put a very long lead in the yard to keep in from jumping the fence. He has the run of the yard, which is pretty big, but he stands out there and barks like crazy!! I have started to stay out with him, and he will be quiet when I am there, but if I turn around he is barking again. If the neighbor's dogs are out he is nuts and pulls and barks and we have to physically pull him back into the house. We have a terrible time taking him for a walk because he pulls and barks and it is no fun for anyone. Help!! Does anyone with more experience watching Cesar have any ideas to help Rex get in control of himself? I am a single mother with 3 children, so I do like his possessivness and protection of the family and the house. Maybe I can't have it both ways.

HOw can I play with the new puppy without the jack russell being jealous. since she is in heat I keep her seperate from the puppy. And also everytime I let the puppy out he wants to bite and bark at 7 weeks old. Is he going to be an aggressive pup?
