Imaginary Walls
You may have heard me say this in the past: Fish swim, bird fly, and dogs walk. It is the most important activity you can share with your pet. It is part of dogs' genes to walk, migrate, and explore. Wild packs do this daily in search of food and water. If you have a dog that refuses to take a walk, he or she is unstable and that is a serious problem.
I would first advise you to seek the advice of a trusted vet to make sure there are no physical or neurological problems. Once those are ruled out, a professional trainer can help teach you the proper pack leadership skills you will need to incorporate during the walk to help ease any anxiety your dog may be experiencing.

THIS is actually where watching and referring back to Cesar's Packleader DVD really can help people understand this emerging idea of being a "packleader". Those of us that watch/study the various resources of Cesar's printed/audio-visual materials, already understand the what and why this shift needs to happen particularly within the context of the dog walk.
I found the packleader video to be ever MORE helpful with helping others understand, who either don't get the National Geographic Channel, or family and friend
as whose constant "humanization" of MY (our) dogs (inspite of requests to behave otherwise), end up slowing or even actively sabatoging our efforts to rehabilitate or modify the behavior changes!
The Packleader DVD is number one on my gift giving list. I have also decided my new year's resolution is, to take my copy of this DVD around to the rescue and foster groups and show pieces to as much as the full DVD as possible(If they will give me the time) to help the volunteers understand how they can help the after holiday season dogs become more adoptable.
I am also very excited to see the continued emphasis on the partnership of finding a more experienced "professional to work with these tools with - no mater is we are talking about the activities like the walk or the tools like the "electric shock collar". I just had a trainer from our area come over to double check my progress and own assessment on a food agressive beagle who was two days from being put down for biting at someone.
As a foster parent for difficult dogs, I know that that was his last chance and if I am not SURE that his food agression behavior is completely modified, this (100% otherwise) WONDERFUL and wonderfully trained dog will be put down the moment he goes to the new home and he menaces the new owner who makes a mistake.
As teacher myeslf, I have had way to many direct experiences of how I am blind to my own weak areas or bad habits, so no matter HOW experienced one gets, it is always worth time and energy to have another review MY behaviors to see what I might be unconsiously doing (like when she pointed out that I was calling the beagle's name so often and how it would help to remove the bowls and send them away from the food/feeding area when they were done eating (wow what a difference that made, by the way!).
I have a new dog. She is a stray and a white boxer and 2 years old. Her name is Sadie. She is deaf and I was wondering if you have any ideas or guidelines on her training.
Thank you.
Do you have a list of professional trainers who use your technique?
Thank you,
June
I just got a dog and it is part wolf and part pitt bull how do I train it?

Dog owners and dog lovers around the country are singing your praises. Your ability and willingness to share your knowledge has not only helped dogs and there owners but also, and perhaps more importantly the relationship between husbands and wifes, who didnt see things the same way as it related to there pets, and ulimatly couldnt solve there pet prolems. Your shows and teachings helped spouses to better understand what they needed to do to help there pet and ultimately there own relationship. We are still working on our leadership problems but Im shure we are better off for watching your shows that are very important to us. Keep up the good work, and please come to N.Y. Thanks, Kevin and Sharon
What do you think about what's being said about Cesar's training techniques by The American Humane Society and Warren Eckstein?
I was a little upset about it because I am a Cesar fan and have never seen anything abusive or inhumane!
Hey Diane! I read your comment and was shocked to know that people would be against Mr. Milan's teachings. My response is a point that he drives home constantly- people tend to humanize their pets, and that is not healthy. This is why people end up with so many problems with their pets. The Humane Society is not a bad group of people, they're just making the same mistake everyone else is making. However, since the humane society is a very influential voice, they do more damage than help by saying that Mr. Milan's teachings are abusive.
And on a side note...do they see the dogs when they leave his care? They are well behaved and balanced- how does that even relate to abuse?
As far as Warren Eckstein goes, I haven't heard him say anything about Mr. Milan, so I can't really comment on that. I'd have to read/hear his comments.
Thanks for the discussion topic!
Hi Ceasar! I love your show. Even though I don't have a dog at this time I watch religiously! Did you see Ellen Degenerous on Leno last night? She was talking about her dog having some problems adjusting to their new house. I Posted a message to her blog suggesting she contact you. I have seen you help owners with similar problems. Maybe your people could call her people? I think she would be a great guest on your show and vice versam ie however that works.
I have a dog who is a year and a half years old. I just picked up a copy of your book and I must say that I find it very interesting. I have learned more about what I have done wrong with my dog in the first few chapters than I ever imagined I would.
I don't know if anyone on here will have any helpful advice, but I would like to get opinions before I make my decision. My 5 year old lab attack our 8 week old puppy this morning and the injuries were too bad to save her. All the puppy was doing was walking by him. The 5 yr old dog has nipped twice in the past year, but nothing like this. Our vet told us this morning that we need to put the 5yr old dog down as well and he is being held for 10 days per state law. I love my dog like he is one of my children, so this is tearing me apart. I want to do what is right for my dog, but I want to do what is right for my children. Opinions, comments, advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You
L.A.
I have heard raves about Mr. Milan and I'm told that my companions run my life. I want to know where I can purchase the video set so I know what to do with my devil dogs. I love them but I'm the only one that can live with them. Thanks in advance for your guidence, Joanna Giglia
Joanna, you can go to cesar's cesarmillaninc website to find DVDs. The first season of Dog Whisperer is out on DVD and also some other DVD series are available.
Hello,
I am new to watching the Dog Whisperer but find the show very informational. I have a 2yr old beautiful 100lb female Alaskan Malamute and she is my pal. She is very non aggressive to the point of hiding behind me when small dogs bark at her. She has had mostly bad experiences with off leash dogs running out to her barking and scaring her. I have tried to socialize her the best I can. Whould be nice to see one of the shows on how to ease her tention around other dogs. Wish I could submit a photo for all to see.
Cesar,
I have a almost year old bulldog. He can't play with other dogs without getting overly exhited and pouncing other dogs with his big paws. He also is very stubborn and won't follow any directions. I try to discipline but he ends up injuring me and scraping all my legs. He gets into a zone and he will tune all that I'm saying out. I'm afraid that it will take another dog bitting him for him to learn that his bitting is not right. Even if he doesn't do it intentionally. Please help and let me know what can I do to get you to come to New Jersey and help me.
We have a 1 1/2 year old pit/boxer mix. He he wonderful around our children/grandchildren; however he is very nervous around strangers, especially children. He recently tried to nip a visiting child. After that incident, we scolded him and leashed him while the child and his parent were present so that we could control him. How can we make him more visitor friendly? We plan to have him neutered soon. Will this help calm him down? I don't want to be responsible for him biting or hurting anyone. His breed has a bad reputation, but he is loving and wonderful with us and we don't want to lose him.

Drew- Your dog sounds adorable. The library has all of Ceasar's tapes and Shannon has his book. Good luck with the training!
I have 21 months old Beagle and she is very active. I love to take her for a walk, but she can not control her self. She runs and pulls everywhere. I don't like to take her any where she goes nuts. We play a lot in my back yard; she just loves to run around the yard. How can I get her to calm down I've tried everything. Can you please help my Savannah? Thanks
I have a 13 yr. old female Lab that lives outside. The past 3 months she has started to bark in the late p.m. hrs.(NONSTOP).We also have another dog who is 8 yrs. old,a male, who lives outside as well but only barks when he knows something or someone is around. My husband & I think the Lab is just getting old.We don't know what to do with her....her barking keeps us awake unless we lock her up for the night. She is otherwise a wonderful, healthy dog.We are very puzzled.....

Dear Cesar,
I have a 2 1/2 year old Shitzu. We bred my moms dog after the sudden death of my father 3 years ago. I delivered the puppies and fell in love with my dog Beethoven. He has filled an emotional void in my life, but I fear I have spoiled him too much. He is very prtective of me. He tried to bite my husband, my daughter and grandaughter. He claws the door to pieces if I leave without him(he is used to going everywhere with me. I can't even go through the drive through restaurants. He jumps 4 feet off the floor when the gardener comes. I have tried to use your methods on my own but he doesn't take me seriously. I know your are sooooo busy but can you PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME! I'll do anything you say. Thankyou Lisa Schmeltz

I am a new dog owner with 3 sons. I wanted a small dog for myself and ended up with a Boxer and Im not too happy. It's still pretty small and I think someone may still want her. I hear that they are great dogs for children and families but are they truly? They look very intimidating so my husband decided this dog would be best for our family since they keep breaking in homes around the neighborhood. My issues are....1. size, I would like to take my dog with me almost everywhere I go and with a larger dog I dont think it will be as easy. 2. I wanted an indoor dog. and these dogs are much larger than I would have liked to be indoors 3. My grandmother is afraid of dogs and comes over very often to babysit she is more likely to not come over with a larger dog. 4.I am afraid it will become too strong for me to control. 5. I wont feel comfortable with the dog in the back yard with my children or other children.....Last and not least MY HUSBAND DOESNT WANT TO GET RID OF THE DOG!!! He says we need a protector not a small dog. Can you help me show him that this dog is wrong for us since I will be the one taking care of it or what is your opinion???????
I love the show, and I am so happy to see that there is someone who actually cares about the animals. I just need a little bit of advice. We just got a new Fox Hound puppy, he's 11 weeks old, and he's doing well with the house training, but he chews on everything, including my 11 month old son. No matter what I do, I can't get him to stop, in a week, he went through 3 leashes because he chews them or plays tug of war when we walk. I know he's a puppy, but what is acceptable puppy behavior? How do I know when to discepline him? He acts out the most when I'm walking him (probably because I have my son on my hip), or if we leave him alone in the room for a little bit (even if we are still home). If I do talk sternly to him, he tucks his tail and runs, and if i barely touch him (to move him of my son), he howls like someone just beat him within an inch of his life (and I have never hit him). Can anyone help? I really like him, but if I can't get him to stop nipping my son, I'm going to have to give him up, and I dont want to do that. What am I doing wrong? Please help
i love ur work.. i have seen u with many dogs and many different breeds at any given time.. my question is can a bullterrier , english bulldog, and apbt co exist in the same dwelling. ur shows makes it seem possible. what methods would u advise for training these types specifically. and how would i go about training them.. and is it advisable to get them all the same age? i hope some one can give me some type of response thanku

Hello my name is Tisha and I have a question for you. recently, we bought a golden retriever puppy, [named Sadie] at 8 weeks old, she is now 8 months old an has a couple of problems: Please Help!
1. Whenever someone new, or out of our imediate family comes over, Sadie will run around the house in circles and just jump all over grandparents, cousins, and friends. It's to the point where they dn't want to come over.
2.Sadie seems to have a lot of fun tackling, molling, and hurting my little brother who is only 4, i am worried that soon Sadie is going to really hurt him. sadie will not stop we have to put my brother in the other room to stop her.
3.Whenever my mom or I try to take her on walks she pulls us to the point where we cannot take her. The only person who actully takes her out for walks is my dad, and she still soesn't behave for him, we are worried that Sadie doesn't get enough excersise.[The only other time that Sadie is outside is when we take her to the field.]

Hi..my husband and I adopted a Bishon Frise she is 4 years old. Her owner had to leave for Iraq and wonder sometimes if she misses him? Because she never plays with toys, I have bought her everything, but no response. She is a wonderful dog, very sweet, no disipline problems. Just wants to be loved and right by my side all day. Is this normal for some dogs not to want play with toys or even run for a ball? I hope she is not depressed. She does interact with people and loves to walk. I feel she has had some training also....hope you have some suggestions. Thank You
Hi Ceasar - Love the show. My husband and I have adopted a 4 1/2 yr old female Rotti. She was only purchased by her previous owners and was kept outside all day long and crated in the basement all night long with no interaction with the family. When we adopted her we decided that this was not right for us - we got her spayed, she has free run of the home both day and night and accept for a few minor accidents she is great. She is very loving, but licks constantly. She will lick anything - people, carpet, floors, blankets - I mean anything in her toungs reach. How can I break her of this habit? If there is nothing in reach - she will then lick herself.
Hello, I have a 6 month of Shitzu she nipps me quite often. I keep telling her no but she keeps doing it. I just had her groomed they had to put a muzzle on her. Is this common. What should I do to get her out of this. Thanks Lisa
We adopted a puppy whose mom was found in Hurricane Katrina. She is a lovely husky/border collie mix. We only have one problem, if she gets out of the yard or away from us for any reason (thankfully it is seldom), she runs and does not even look at us when we call her. She comes fine in the yard but not when she gets out. We are afraid for her safety. We have read numerous books and tried many approaches but we cannot get her to want to stop exploring to come back to us. If she is where we can drive the car to her, she will jump into the car when we open the door and ask her to come, however this is not always an option. Thank you.
Cesar I have a problem with my dog he is Siberian Husky and an Alaskan White Wolf mix well for some reason I don't understand him at all!! He is a year old now he turned a year on May 16th. For some odd reason he likes to tease my grandfather by tearing up his shoes, his hanging lamp to fix the car, and he has dug into the planters that have some plants in them. I don't know if he is trying to get attention or is he just making my grandfathers life just miserable? Please Answer Back my email is MODERATOR'S NOTE: PERSONAL EMAIL ADDRESSES ARE NOT PERMITTED ON THE BLOG. THANKS! Thank you for your time!!!
Dear cesar,
my name is caitlyn im 13 years old. I have been watching your show since it started and i think it is great, but i have a slight problem my family brought a puppy 1year ago, his name is furby. When we got him he was good. When we moved to a different place wich was about 10 months ago he started chewing on everything such as blinds, furniture, and he starts fight with our other dog who is 6 years old. For an example if furby is in is cage(not lock up) he growls at my other dog meeko if he is walking by his cage he will get out and start attacking each other. furby has another problem. If he see someone that he doesnt now he will bark like crazy and he will attack them. so please can you help me!!!!!!PLEASE!!!!!!!!!
I have had 3 Boxers in the passed and never ran into any problems with aggression. I now have a 1 1/2 yr. old female Boxer and a 4 mo. old male Boxer. Whenever friends come over the 2 dogs will growl at them. My son could be playing with the 4 mo. old and then leave to go to a friend's house. The puppy will see him walking on the sidewalk and growl at my son. I try to distract him but he is so fixated on anything outside. When I leave the house I gate them in the familyroom and kitchen and leave the back door open enough for them to go outside, but instead they will urinate and deficate on the floor. I have alot of kids through my house and I don't know what to do to get them out of this behavior. I'm selling my house and moving cross country. I will be driving with my 12 yr. old. son, the 2 dogs and 18 reptiles. Since my husband passed away my son and my animals are all I have. It would destroy me if I had to get rid of my dogs. Please I really need your help desperately !!!!
Need help, We have a 1 1/2 year old pug that gets seizures when she gets excited. Is this normal? We are in the process of getting another dog, we have brought the dog over to the house so the dogs can meet, at first when the dogs started to stiff each other nose to nose, the new dog quickly laid down, but once the pug starting grawing and barking the new dog started to bark as well. Once that happen my pug went into a seizure. Will this go away once the dogs get to know each other.
Dear Ceaser, I love watching your show and i 3 dogs of my own so I am trying to learn about your training techniques. I have a collie that we got at a shelter about 2 or 3 years ago. He was the sweetest dog I ever met until my mom had a baby. The baby is over a year old and every time he has gotten near this dog the dog would growl, snap, and ocassinally pin him down underneath him and just growl at him for no reason. the dog seems to be scared of the baby, it might be from something a kid did to him when he was a puppy. The collie still acts this way and if he attacks the baby again i'm afarid the only thing to do is to give him back to the shelter. I love this dog and on more than one occasion he has shown me that he would do anything to protect me and I desperately need your help to stop my dogs behavior before he serously hurts the baby. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!
Cesar,
My name is Joycelyn and I have a 10 month old yorkie poo who recently tries to attack us if we stop rubbing him, rub him for to long or try to remove him from the bed or couch where he does not belong. Pii Wii has succeeded in some attacks. Im afraid to let anyone else play with him in the event that he is unprdictable in his actions. What suggestions would you have for this type of behavior. He's the little dog with a big bite. RRRRRRRRRR

Just got turned onto you and your awesome show. We adopted a pure white 5 month old female chihuahua mix and later discovered she is 100% deaf. We also have a male chihuahua (4 years old) and a female chi-mix (13 years old). The puppy cannot hear their warning growls and only wants to bounce all over them. We are afraid to leave them together for fear that the male will hurt her. We are frustrated trying to teach sign language to a very active, distracted puppy and want to help her become a joy in our large family of children and grandchildren. We want to "get it right." She is very active (possible Jack Russell mix per our vet?) and yet she also loves nothing better than to sit in our laps and go to sleep. She is crate trained and does fine with that but we would eventually like to let all 3 of them together while we are away as the other two get along fine. Can you help?
Hi all,
just wondering if anyone has ever encountered a situation where a dog is living in a house - comfortable with all family members for months, then all of a sudden, starts barking at family members and at just random things for no reason...? She is a young rottie/lab mix. She is very friendly , and sweet, but for some reason, she started barking at my mother when my mother comes in the door - she never used to do that. Anyone else encounter anything similar?
Hello Ceasar,
I just had to say that I love your work.
I have only recently started watching your show 7 nighs a week, but I think I am one of your most loyal Australian viewers. I am totally addicted to your show "The Dog Whisperer". You are brilliant!
I have watched many animal trainers trying to break owners bad traits in dogs and failed. But I am yet to see you give up on a single dog. The owners are the true problem in most cases though. Thank God you are here to give them a wake up call.
I live in Sydney, Australia and though I do not get your show on the National Geographic Channel, we do get it via a similar channel called the "BIO Channel" on Foxtel Digital (Pay TV).
Last night however, I missed your show due to bad electrical storms causing a total electrical blackout and a my pay TV (foxtel) having an outage. I was very angry indeed!
I have only recently started watching your show on a regular basis, and now I won't miss it. It is on at a perfect time for me. I serve dinner and sit down with my girls to watch Ceasar work his magic on another unruly dog. My kids also get value out of Ceasar's lessons.
Although, last night when I could not watch your show, instead of having a viscious dog lurking around waiting to snap, I was that snappy dog. LOL Luckily I got a double episiode of TDW tonight. :)
LOVE YOUR SHOW CEASAR! LOVE YOUR WORK TWO!

Quote from Joann:
Hi Joann,
What a wonderful thing you have done by taking in this stray dog... especiall one with a deaf handicap.
But rest assured, even though she is deaf, and you cannot communicate with verbal commands, you can use other methods just as easily. You can train her with body language and silent commands (similar to working with deaf people), you can learn to sign commands to your dog.
For example: if you wanted her to sit, you could use a click and point method. You click your fingers, and then point to the ground. Ok she can't hear you clicking, but the she can see you perform the command. Repitition is the key.
Maybe the first time you try to train her you could ask a friend to help you. Obviously she is not going to know straight away what you mean my these commands.
So, if you do simple commands, and have your friend gently help her follow the command by guiding her into the sit position, and then reward her with a pat and perhaps a piece of chicken... and then repeat the command again... and again... and again. Until she does it on her own. After she masters the trick you can replace the food reward with maybe a game... or a walk.
You need her to be relaxed, and happy with you as her owner. For this to happen you have to be boss as well as her friend. REMEMBER DOGS ORIGINALLY COME FROM WILD DOGS like a WOLF that has been domesticated and bred over and over to get our domestic breeds. Wolfs are pack animals. As they are not in a pack we become the pack and you have to be the pack leader from the start. Deaf or NOT she needs a simply job to keep her active and LEADERSHIP. Boxers are hyperactive dogs that need constant stimulation just like a young child. They never seem to grow out of this either. So you have to be calm and assertive but yet dominant around her. Dog schools can also help you in training her.
Good luck!

Ok she cant hear you, but body language and other signs (like sign language for human deaf) will sink in after a while. & lots of walks, and maybe obedience training or agility training as she is a boxer. Boxers are very energetic dogs and bore easily if this is not burned off. Brain and Body need stimulating. Give her simple jobs to keep her active when you arent araound also. Buy her a backpack, tie it on her before you leave for work and take it off when you get home.
Most of all be persistent, set rules, be boss same as with a hearing dog. They still need rules.
I have a 12 week old lab mix. When I try to take him for a walk on the leash, he gets extremely stubborn. He bucks around like a rodeo bull when I gently tug the leash three times. He will sit and look the opposite direction we are walking. However, if I walk him without a leash, he calmly walks directly behind me and sometimes beside me. How do I motivate him to walk behind or beside me on a leash?

Ceasar, your're amazing :) It is incredible how well you works with the dogs on the show. We have a 12 week old female chocolate lab, Callie. She is nipping constantly! We're very dedicated puppy owners and have tried several things...nothing is working and we seem to be running out of suggestions. Can you help us??
