Howling Beagle (Airs Friday, January 12)

There are lots of hunting breeds that live in big cities and owners need to be able to manage and control their natural hunting instincts. For these dogs, it's all about senses: Getting the scent, spotting prey and going after it. Some dogs do have a lesser hunting drive and may never have a problem, but more determined dogs need to be able to channel the drive using any available resources. The trick is to redirect his attention from your cat or the park squirrels by creating a kind of scavenger hunt for him, using his own toys or your old clothes. Let him get the scent of the object you want him to find, then hide the prize behind a tree or under a bush. It's a great way for him to satisfy his desire for the hunt!

Wow, I learned how to get labs to jump in the water for toys but never how to learn how to play hide and seek!

This is an episode which is around a skill completely outside my experience and I am looking forward to learn how to do this game with a "food agressive beagle" I working to rehabilitate and rehome! What a fun thing to teach a new owner to do!

our beagle sydney is also a big barker
he was raised on a small farm in MS. We now have him in FL since his home was destroyed( with his family) in hurricane katrina. dont get me wrong he s a great dog but he is used to barking at ANYONE that comes on the perimiter. so he barks at everyone man, child, or dog that walks in front of our house. im going to try this out. i think he will like this game.
thank you
shaunna
ps he was also trained to alert at the sound of a door bell ( which we do not have ) but if he hears one on tv it takes thirty minutes to convince him there is not someone at the door. haha

I apologize in advance for any typos; due to an injury I am typing with one hand. The fractured elbowed occurred when I was walking my daughter in-laws red nose pit bull on Dec. 4th; she spotted a cat and dropped and dragged me as if I weighed 5 pounds. I was so scared at the time but now I am very sad because now I realize that I will never be able to walk her again. Oh how I wish Cesar Millan could visit Tampa Florida it is beautiful this time of year. :-) Please let Cesar know that I love his work and his dog Daddy!!!!!!

I have 2 german shorthairt pointers,a male & a female. I love the breed, but I am new to the breed and I didn't realize they are such athletes. Thanks for the tips on playing hide and seek. My main problem is the 2 year old male WILL NOT COME BACK

sorry didn't finish the last comment. He won't return to me if he gets loose. All he wants to do is hunt and although I live in a rural area, I'm afraid that he will be so into hunting that he will get lost or hit by a car. What can I do to train him to come to me when I call him?

Dharma is a A.Staffordshire she is 8 yrs.and still hates speeding Trucks/Cars/etc. She runs up to all other Dogs Big/Small she has had her Butt Biten a couple of times.. then she gets submissive with Dad placing her down at that point..
Dharma has been in bad accident @6 mos old left upper back molars knocked out & (R) leg damaged nerve..given acupuncture 9mos saved her leg..but she still has the rage on other animals and people she does not know? How Cesar ca we stop this I used some of your tecniques Yes they have worked but she is adament in her Alpha state. Thanks Glenda Jasper

Duke 12 YR.old A.Staffordshire 85 pds Neutered at 8 weeks Duke naws at the tip of his teeth on all my pillows bedding anything that is cloth or Dad's Vest he naws like a nervous energy could this be from being Neutered @ early age? Otherwise Duke is a real champ until Dharma his sister totally Alpha runs him away from anything she wants from him balls frisbees etc. Do I stop the fight when she attacks him in fullon fight (No Blood)or let them fight there own battles? Duke is such the good mannerd Dog now that Dharma is in the picture for 8 yrs Duke is eagar to chew more than ever. He rather go off in the other room when she is in her Alpha mood..But when they are at the River or Lake each weekend Duke kicks butt..Thanks Glenda Jasper

Cesar is an amazing person. His insite into the mind and emotions of dogs and people is something that comes natural to him. My wife and I watch every episode of The Dog Whisperer and I have learned many tips from Cesar. I have two wonderful minature White American Eskimo dogs. Angel (female) and Greta (female). Without even realizing it, I established myself as the leader of the pack early. Angel was a pup we got from a private breeder and Greta was a rescue. Her master was going into a nursing home, so we took her home. I never have to repremand my dogs, they are so considerate. They get walked daily; they are given good food, and lots of love. They respect me as I respect them, but they always know that I am their leader. They do not have any hangups because I treat them fairly. I do not play favorites with one or the other. So when I found Cesar's program, I realized that treating a dog like a human is doing them an injustice. I had been on the right track. We love Cesar Millan, The Dog Whisperer. We never miss the program.

I love this idea! Try Cesar's ideas but keep reading and contact a good trainer through the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. Cesar has some good information but don't foget to check and see what others are doing and saying in the field of dog training and behavior. Animal behaviorists, biologists, psychologists, dog trainers, & ethologists are coming out with new pet dog related information almost daily! I'm reading Patricia McConnell's PhD new book "For the Love of A Dog" and it is WONDERFUL. I'm a fan of Jean Donaldson & Dr. Ian Dunbar PhD's books as well. Ray Coppinger & Dr. Nicholas Dodman Dr. Temple Grandin, Trish King, James A Serpell also... the list goes on and on. The most current research and information available regarding dogs and dog behavior is NEW, EXTENSIVE, EXCITING!

I want to correct something which I wrote above "try Cesar's ideas". As the show states in the disclaimer, don't try his methods without first consulting a professional trainer.

Karen Hammonds:
sorry to hear about your injury, last yr I steped into the path of my running dog, got knocked off my feet & broke my wrist. But beside that I don't let my 2 dogs pull, my rottie or my boxer mix, I use prong collars, put them up high behind the ears & they just don't pull. Don't give up walking the dog, practice in the yard. When I put on their regular collars, say just from the car into the dog park, they pull too, hang in there and win.

Karen Hammonds,

I have been pulled down by my dogs (two) in the same manner you described, under the same circumstances. I've not had injuries as serious as yours, just lucky I guess, but I went down BLAM on my face, broke a couple fingers, ribs, and my dr THINKS I fractured a small bone in my wrist but I didn't get it checked out & so I don't know for sure. This happened to me more than one time -- like about half-a-dozen times -- before I heard about Cesar. I started practicing some of what Cesar shows on the show, and it helped a lot. I'm still pretty fearful though. But I'm working on it!

I "got back on the horse" right away. I liked Bootsmutt's suggestions above about the different collars. Cesar's Illusion collar is good for this. I am still fearful of walking both of mine together on leash on nice days, because that's when other dogs and cats are also outside. We live in a rural area, so there are tons of animals out loose here.

I sometimes now just turn around when I see a cat or dog, and go in the other direction. I also try not to look at the cat, because the dog can sense that I'm doing this and if I'm fixating on the cat, then so is the dog -- and with two dogs, it's a recipe for disaster. If I just have one dog, I am able to control them (they weigh 80 lbs each). I have great difficulty controlling both unless there are zero distractions.

I recently got the NG channel and really enjoy the shows..We have two dogs, both are dogs that people surrendered. Our Lab/Husky mix is beyond good. I don't think she has ever done something wrong. In a year she has only barked 4 times, at the kids that live underneath us, (we don't get that). Two weeks ago we rehomed a beagle about 1 yr old. I think the former owners were not quite telling the truth on alot of things.. he's murder to walk, pulls you everywhere. He is crate trained, but hates it and cries alot.I have had a broken finger because of walking a dog, our old st. bernard, and one pulled out of joint by a dalmation(sp). If Cesar ever feels like doing a show in Seattle, the beagle would love to see him. I would never get rid of the dog because he is very sweet natured, and is good with our other dog and a 2 yr. old, it's just taking walks is horrible.

LoL! I remember those days with my beagles. I liked to play hide and seek with them (throw a toy and run and hide somewhere while they ran after it) It was awesome to watch them nose through the apartment trying to find me. One even followed the sent through the air up to the top of the dryer, where I was sitting.

We cured the howling of one by accident. We had to go away for a day or so and put her in a kennel (a nice one that had long walks during the day etc.) While she was there she must have howled a lot b/c when she came back she was hoarse, she had also must have given up on howling to get something b/c she stopped doing it after that.

Does anyone know were the next phycology center is moving to?
and my dog and my cousins dog are really smart and listeners now. at first the dogs were totally agnoring everyone in my family and now therre so respectful. Cesar's metonds work i'm the only one in my family that believes that cesar is truly a dog whisperer.

-Angelica
P.S.- If cesar reads this please send me how to make my other cousins dog a follower and not a leader. And the weird thing is that my cousins family wants the dog to be the leader very very weird.

Does anyone know how I can ask Cesar Millan something? I noticed he has a giant, stone Olmec head in his dog yard. It's an archaeological artifact from Mexico, or a replica. I wonder where he got it and what his heritage is.

Thanks

I love the Ceasar Milan's show and have his book. I have 2 wonderful dogs, an Aussie and a Bassett Hound. I have always used the human as the alpha technique with all my dogs. I have a problem with my Bassett though since learning I am allergic to dogs. He should not be sleeping with me and I can't keep him out of my bed without him whining and hound howling all night! I have always prided myself on my dogs obeying me but can't get past this one. A show on this subject would be wonderful!
Sleepless in Pittsburgh

DONNA! My wife and I also have a German Shorthaired Pointer. Günther is a 55 pound, 6 month old GSP and he is COMPLETELY out of control. He is OK at night when he sleeps on the bed with us, but in the morning when we let him out as we get ready for work, he will have dug holes, and bit leaves off of saplings (my magnolia and my pomegranate are most likely deceased). I take a 3 minute shower, and he does this kind of stuff that rapidly. Not one second can we turn our backs on him... and forget about WALKING. He RUNS and won't stop. He'll drag me until his tongue turns purple. He literally chokes himself as I desperately try to keep up. Take him off the leash? UH, NO. He runs off and won't come back when called. Group classes have failed. I am at my wits end. If Cesar decided to rehabilitate Günther for a show, he'd throw up his arms in frustration and retire. I love the breed also, and I like an active dog, but he is WAY TOO HYPER. Walking your dog is supposed to be a pleasure - not a constant battle and daily occurrence of angina.

I hope your arm heals well.German training collars(prong collars) work great--they may look horrible but if used correctly do not cause injury or pain while walking your dog. I am disabled and always in pain our rotti/lab mix (was a pound pup)weighs 1oo lbs I can't have any presure placed on me and the collar works great--off collar my 12 year old walks him but he does pull
I enjoy the show the dog whisper and have gotten some great tips.wished the show had been on when we first got lucky-I would have made sure we socialized him with people like we did with animals he's great with rabbits ,cats and dogs but is nervous of strange people.

hope cesar does a puppy show showing how to prevent our dogs from developing problems.

(how ever in his book he says to start off walking your dog when you bring it home- but puppies (or any dog )that haven't had its shots shouldn't be walked outside until protected from parvo and other dog disease-(for puppies my vet says 2 sets of shots)othes say 1 listen to your own vet.

Colby Bauer...Cesar's way is what you need, but his techniques don't always work for everyone. Check out the book "The Koehler Method of Dog Training" by William Koehler. Either the most recent edition, or an old edtion - it doesn't matter which. He will give you techniques for training that mesh quite well with Cesar's philosophy.

In the back of the book, in the section about really incorrigable dogs, there might be some things you don't like. I don't either, actually...but just ignore them and use the basic techniques that are the meat of the book.

Love the shows & have learned so much from Cesar.
What I am after are those roller blades Cesar uses and where to get them, their brand name, etc. We have big dogs that would benefit from the increased speed.

thanks

my sister is very sad beacouse her dog bit my frend and is under quarantine. she all ways sleaps on my sister. goldy is not house traned. And my dog is allways is barking. I know that it would maker her very happy if you could and save he dog.

I have an almost 3 y/o Great Pyranese who barks and barks and barks. She barks at a car driving down the road...over 1/4 mile away!!! We let her out on a long leash in the back yard and as soon as she hears it click, she lunges off of the deck and starts barking. I have actually had her outside for 3 hours and she barked the whole 3 hours. I have told her to stop..doesn't happen. Then, when you call her to come back in, she won't. I live in MN and our temps during the winter can bottom out at 40 below zero so we can't exactly walk her as much during the winter. I do walk everyday (pending good weather) with her and my kids during the summer, but she still barks.

Does anyone have any suggestions? We are literally at our wits end and are ready to give her up. We hate to because she is awesome with our 2 young kids...I mean AWESOME. Any suggestions???

Cesar, Hello, my name is Tim I have a pet pit-bull. His name is Rosco. He is a very friendly and lovable dog, he gets along with everyone, two and four legged. I would like to know however how I get him to come to me and stay by the house when we go outside. He just doesn't listen at all. He is very hyper and wants to be all over anyone that comes near him, in a friendly way. This is my daughter's Email, her name is Meghan. Thank you for all your help in this matter. Your show is awesome!!! You are incredible with the pets on your show. Thank you from all the folks you have helped and myself and my family.

Gratefully,
Tim

My husband and I watch Cesar every week. The techniques used relate to dogs' needs without being cruel. I have two dogs, one is a Rhodesian Ridgeback(7 years old) and the other a black mouth cur(1 year old). Though we don't hunt, both breeds are hunting dogs. The Rhodesian is used in Africa to flush out lions and the Cur is used in the South part of the U.S. for tracking and killing wild boar. Our Cur is extremely active, and though we walk them every day. The walks never seem to wear her out. I finally bought a backpack for her to wear on the walks. From the first moment I put it on her, she loved it. Her whole attitude changed into a "proud working mode". The only problem now is that my Rhodesian wants a pack too. When I hook up the dogs for a walk, my Rhodesian waits for a pack to be put on her. I guess we'll never run out of drinking water during the hot summer. Thanks Cesar for all you do!!

Cesar's techniques are great and we're using his training with our dogs and even the cat responds to the tsssssssssst (not that she really listens YET she's young, 8mos) but our household alarm is a Conure. She squawks and the frenzy starts. Regardless of the stimuli, deer, bunny, hawk or a leaf blowing by, until the bird quiets the others are far from being calm. We're working of the others reactions however, is there a solution for the parrot? While watching Cesar it's almost like the bird is laughing at him saying the tsssssssssst won't work on me!!! "Is there anyone out there" with an answer? :))

Oh yeah... beagles howl just like in the Disney movie "The Fox and the Hound" it's what they do when they have found what they're looking for!

Does anyone have experience with walking/training Doberman's? I have consider the backpack for them because they are such high-energy and need more challenging exercise. Would this be good for them? I have 2 and bought both in Germany. They are beautiful with great temperment and personality. The female is a focused fetcher!! I love it but she gets so focused that it is nearly impossible to get her to be calm-submissive. I'm working with Cesar's calm attitude myself and I tell you that it takes great patience. Seeing him work with dogs on his show has helped me maintain a calm state with my own dogs to see some results.
My biggest problem is that I plan to breed the dogs so some of the dominance things are a problem. The female is older (9 months) and bigger so she thinks she should be in charge. The male is 5 months but a male so he thinks he should be in charge. They are not aggressive about it but it's difficult to keep them from getting each other spun up since I can't supervise them all the time.
Be alert if you plan to get 2 dogs close together in age and want to train them. I wish I could get them with Cesar's pack to learn how to act with each other (especially the male who isn't as socialized as the female).

I would love to see Cesar try to train a hunting dog to "come" when out in the field. I have a plott hound/mountain cur mix who could carry the show for another season. She doesn't go far Thank God! but could spend hours/days/weeks (don't let me elaborate on this one) in the woods rain or shine non stop; This is a dog that gets 2hours of exercise a day! We have mastered the exercise, the leash walk, basic commands. Its just the off leash experience we have trouble with. There are dog owners at the park who don't even believe I own a dog, because they are so used to seeing me walking alone on the trails with a leash in my hand, no dog in sight. Still, we always come home together so I will keep trying. Love to know Cesar's secret on this one.

I love the idea of rollerblading with my dog but I am a little shaky on them. I noticed your rollerblades that have big wheels on them. Are those like training wheels? Are they more stable? Where can I get them? I love your show and always learn something new. It's amazing how quickly you are able to get problem behaviors under control.

Hi Cesar,

I was upset by the recent article in People Magazine about others "dogging" your methods of rehabilitating dogs........why can't people just be happy that there is someone out there helping these problem animals so that they can still have a good life and not be put down! Just know that my husband and I are proud Cesar supporters and believe in what you do! You have worked so hard to get where you are! Thanks for all you do........good luck with the move to Santa Clarita? I think it was...........love from our doggies in TEXAS!!!!!!!!!!!

My dog is 5 years old. His name is jojo. When we do laundry he always rolles in my dads dirty undershirt. I really find it interesting and want to know why he does this.

What breed of dog is Daddy. He is a huge awesome dog. Have you breed him and if so do he have any puppies? Would you sell them or would you give them away since I read that he was a dog from the pound?

I have a 16 month old male Black Cocker Spaniel named Gunny. I'm watching for a show where he deals with a barking dog. Gunny barks at anything he hears outside, hides his ball, knows where it is, but barks at it, barks at the doorbell, even on TV. Does anyone know if Cesar has done a show on barking?

I have 2 neutered 7 month old brother wolf/malamutes.
I have walked them using Cesar's techniques for 3 months every
night after work for at least 30 minutes. They walk great along
side me as long as they don't see other dogs. They are not aggressive at all, just seem to whine some and want to pull towards them. I correct them when they start pulling, but they
out weigh me easily and I am all over the place until the other
dogs pass. Then things settle down and I have control again of
the walk. Will this phase pass as they get older? Am I not doing
something right? Should I get them back packs?

!!!HELP!!!!I have a 14 month old yorkie toy named Fancy I have tried to pottie train her so that I could have her inside the house at all times but she just will not listen. My husband said that if she doesnt learn soon Im not gonna be able to have her anymore. My daughters and I love her alot but its difficult to train her I dont how I have tried different things. Please, Please , Please help us. we watch your show alot and we think you will be the one to help.

hey!!!!!!!! i love your show the DW !!! HOTT!!!!!! by the way do have any help on how 2 clip dog's toenails???

My dog Matilda and I have been doing Dog Agility for over a year. To get her to come to me is good except when I lean over to put the leash on she backs up. So I started walking away from her and going to the bleachers to watch the other dogs and Matilda when called would come and then I could put the leash on her. WEELLLLLLLL, NOW MATILDA is smart...she knows that when I walk away and catch her in the bleachers as she is sitting next to me she has now started to just sit in the Dog Agility Arena and stair at me while Im sitting in the bleachers. I got up one time and walked off the bleachers and hide from her....well, then she just went up into the bleachers and wagged her tail at all the other people and dogs that are there. Sometimes Im thinking that Matilda is telling me that she is NOT finished playing and doesn't want the leash. She does this at home also. I have tryed treats when she comes to me. But, when I reach for her to put the leash on she backs off like to say neener neener neener!! What can I do to get her to stand still while I put the leash on her. She does great at all other tasks, sitting, staying, all the Agility obstackles.......but, not with me trying to leash her. HELP!! and CESAR I watch your show ever chance I get......Even all the reruns..........I have lots of dogs and have trianed them in rounding up cattle to dog obediance......BUT, IM STUMPED ON THIS ONE!! Can you give me some suggestions, Please. Donna.......and I won't tell Matilda!! lol

Hello!

First i want to thank you for a great show. It runs every Monday evening at Tv4+ in Sweden, and i watch every episode. And when ever i "babysit" my parent's now 8mounth old mini Daschund Morgan i try some of the thing's you talked about on the show.

This last time he stayed at my place, i realised that he stoped barking, when ever he saw or met another dog.
Also that he now knows that the first five minutes of the walk he can stop as often as he wants, to relive himself and after that i deside when and how often he can stop. The walking has definitly become more pleasant.

He want's to get up to my bed in the morning to play, and to get me out of bed. Now he knows that unless he needs to get out to relive himself, i don't get out of bed at 6 or 7 on a Saturday or Sunday morning. But if he wants to sleep next to me his welcome. This Saturday we had a quite cousy morning, when we slept until 8:30 or so. And then we played for a couple of minutes before we got of bed.

It's wonderful to see how his turning into a calm, confident well behaved young dog. So thank you Ceasar!!

Kind regards Anneli

I have a four year old mute(part Chow/part Lab)named PeanutButter. She is a very preventive of me and I am six months pregnant and my fear is that when the baby comes home that PeanutButter will try to harm the baby. Please let me know if you have any advise on how to prepare for the baby. I love PeanutButter and don't ever want to have to give her away.

Our dogs have a craze for runnin around! Everytime we take them for a walk, well they pull and the shove, they begin fighting with each other and always stop to sniff other dog business. Another thing is that Mickey barks at people all the time besides us. He egt princess very nrevous and scared so she begins to howl. A few days later she also began to bark. Every time smeone approaches them just to pet them, they back down or try to run away. They go nuts when they see us and they only eat chewy food. Princees eats the normsl dog food but Mickey is a a whole other story. His teeth are very soft and Princess's teeth are normaly sharp. Mickey is a Chihuahua and Princess is a Pomeranian. PLease helps us!!!!

Sincerely,
Gina and Elsie Vnegas

i AM IN DESPERATE NEED FOR HELP, I CAN NOT FIND ANYWAY TO CONTACT CEASAR MILLAN. PLEASE TELL ME HOW. MY VERY LOVING LARGE PUPPY [11MONTHS OVER 80 LBS] NEEDS A LOT OF HELP. I DO NOT WANT TO LOSE HIM. I HAVE FOSTER CHILDREN, MOSTLY TODDLERS,HE KNOCKS THEM OVER . NOT A GOOD SITUATION. HE CHEWS UP EVERYTHING.HE GETS TOO ROUGH WITH OUR SENIOR DOG. I NEEDTO GET THIS RESOLVED SOON OR HE CAN NOT STAY HERE AND TAKE THE CHANCE OF HIM SEVERELY INJERING ONE OF THE KIDS. I LOVE HIM BUT I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO. I HAVEN.T FOUND ANYTHING IN THE BOOK THAT ADDRESSES THIS PROBLEM. SOMEBODY TALK TO ME.

I have noticed on Cesar's show that he mostly works with adult dogs, and I personally haven't seen him work with younger dogs, or teenager dogs.
I have a teenage Belgian Tervuren.
He's the sweetest dog, often overly affectionate in fact, he knocks kids down, climbs all over them, jumps on people, and is often overly excited to the point of being waayyyyy too in my face, constantly needing attention, and it feels overwhelming because I can't seem to get him to chill out, I've been doing basic training with him, and have never hit him, but now because I'm constantly reprimanding him, he cowers when I approach him, and I'm now beginning to feel guilty, and unsure of what to do.
I keep hoping that with proper obedediance training that he will outgrown his neediness and fear of the beach.
He was the dominant pup in the pack, and I have really worked at not letting him dominate me, which he was intent on as a pup.
I've been watching your show, and have tried to apply your techniques, but not sure exactly how to help him grow into the magnificent dog that he was born to be.
I live in Hawaii, the island of Maui, and would like to be able to take him to the beach, but when I do, he acts aggressive towards all dogs, so I keep him on his leash, and cannot just let him loose for fear he's either going to attack another dog, or get hurt by other dogs that he might harass.
He's a splendid, beautiful dog when he's running in my yard, but when I take him to the beach, or out in public, he gets nervous, so lately I haven't been able to take him with me.
I don't let him roam my property without supervision, for fear of liabilty, so I keep him on a long run, and walk him around the property daily.
Can't get him to chase balls for exercise, and the roads here on Maui aren't conducive to roller blading, or I would do that with him.
Bikes and dogs are not an option either.
The tennis ball, if he would chase it would be ideal.

Hey Cesar, wanna visit Maui and help me with my dog Koa?
He needs your help, and so do I.

Bring your family to Maui, and help Koa and I.

And then you could show your viewers what to do with teenage dogs.

A hui ho,
Phoenix

My dog Buddy, is a shi-tzu-poodle mix. He has a problem. Everytime someone leaves the house he has to pee and poop in the bedroom. If we put him in his room, he will tear it apart by spilling the water dish and ruffeling up the blankets. He also has an issue of eating his own poop whether it is outside or inside. He is like a rebelious teenager. My parents want to get rid of him, and I just don't want to give up and quit on him because I do really care for him. What to DO?

recently i wrote about my neighbor's dog. he is sweet and affectionate but gets very little attention. he remains chained in the yard. i try to walk him but my health doesn't allow me to do it consistently. but since i'm the only one who does, i don't want to give up on him. the problem is that he pulls most of the time on the walk. he will stop and change direction whenever i want him to but once we are on a straight path, he begins to pull. consequently, i can't go far because he wears me out. the techniques that cesar uses for this problem do no good. is it possible that he pulls so much because he is always chained up and pulling on the leash in the yard? i would love to solve this problem so that i can spend more time w/ him. any suggestions?
thanks so much.

Hello Ceasar, I have a one year old male medium sized cocker-poodle. He is smart and trains easy, he's affectionate and loves going for walks. The problem is he barks. He barks at any & every noise, at people, at animals, at the light turning on in the backyard! Although I do not like using bark collars, we did try that approach but all it did was cause him to bark more (bark-yelp-bark-yelp-bark) - so we stopped using it. We have tried all we can think of to get him to stop barking so much. At times I think he is afraid and that is why he barks at everything. Please send suggestions on how to work with this problem and bring his barking under control. Did I miss an episode where excessive barking was addressed? Thanks for anny & all help

Finally a person who actually has a feeling for dogs. I have been able to read dogs for years. Maybe from being bitten over and over by my familys Pekapoo, he was mean but thinking back he showed the non verbal actions that you talk about all the time. My favorite job was working with a local vet he also had another to help now and then that had her masters in pet pschology. I learned alot from her. But I also feel I have an instict in how a dog comunicates and I watch you and I say the same things you do before you say them. I feel alot of people think I am being mean but that couldn't farther from the truth.
I LOVE dogs it's like I feel I must have had this calling to animals my whole life(no I'm not a wacko)I just wanted to thank you for all your very very hard work you do to educate people on the care and training animals and how they think.
Today I saw the episode with Storm who wouldn't eat hamburger. That's my Mom's Shih Tzu. I try to tell her things but she doesn't listen to me. My Shih Tzu acts like a dog and my friend of course. My favorite breed is the Pits and the Rotties I have had both and they are the biggest babies forget thier reputations I am a firm believer the dog will act out by the way it was trained, and treated.

Thank You Again,
Cindy and Missy (my Shih Tzu)

HELLO CEASAR
WE HAVE A MIX RAT TERRIER WE ADOPTED 4 YEARS AGO. HE IS OKAY AROUND FAMILY BUT CAN TELL HE IS LEADER OF THIS PACK. WE HAVE TO KEEP HIM ON A RUNNER OUTSIDE BECAUSE HE BITES PEOPLE. WHENEVER WE HAVE COMPANY HE GOES INTO A RAGE, GROWLS, SHOWS TEETH AND WILL ATTACH ANYONE THAT IS NOT IN THE FAMILY. WE THE FAMILY DO NOT FEEL COMFOTABLE WITH HIM AT TIMES. WE WOULD LOVE TO SPEND MORE TIME WITH SAMMY AS I AM SURE HE WOULD LOVE TO SPEND WITH US BUT HE IS TOO AGGRESIVE. I HAVE JUST PURCHASED THE TAPES AND HOPE TO MAKE MAJOR CHANGES IN OUR FAMILY.

I Love your work and your gift !
I have just one small question how the heck do I get my husky to let me touch her feet, She hates it and snips and pulls away I have only had her maybe 7 mos she is between 3-5 and belonged to my next door neabors (they were very abusive to her) and she adoped me and I told them they could not have her back ! she is happy- very much love and well feed now and loves my attion and is just the best dog, I have no real complants about her it just seems to be about trusting me 100%, I just know that where she came from was not a good place. I have earned her trust its just her feet and I am baffled, I thought to try nail ploish and she will not allow that eaither ?? I have rubed her feet but that took maybe an hour for her to trust me ! and I thought maybe I should do that everyday a fue times untill she learns that I am not going to hurt her - she is going to need a nail trim soon and I dont want to tramatize her any more than she is all ready is, many years ago I worked in a vet hospital and never came across anything like this?

Dear Cesar,

I have a beautiful german Sheppard named Ruby. She is 6 months of age and she has recently lost some of her baby teeth as we knew she would but she has gotten in to the bad habit of mouthing during this time. We fear that she might bite someone when she is older so we want to nip this in the butt now. She has lots of toys and stimulation and she won't stop. We have tried some tips of your show but she doesn’t react very well. We have been taking our time and working with her consistently. And she is very excitable. We are calm and assertive she lives in a calm environment and has lots of exercise. I find it really odd. Got any tips?

Thanks,
Caitlin.

our bitch Tess is lovely on and off the lead and with people and animals very relaxed BUT we CONNOT leave her alone for a minute as she gets very fretful not destructive, we got her from the pound so no history she is 3 years old please any suggestions ????????????

I have two Daschunds about 14 weeks old and we are having a hard time getting them to pee & poop outside. Even if they are outside in their pen for an hour, we bring them inside and even when we are watching them they start to pee or poop within 10 - 15 minutes, we've tried different things and nothing seems to work. Please help with any suggestions.

Thank You

Our family owns two dogs. A minature schnauzer that is 10 1/2 years old and more recently acquired an abandoned chihuahua that is now around 10 months old. The problem is that the schnauzer has never liked other dogs and since she is getting older and is not fond of the chihuahua and has since begun peeing in the house as if to remark her territory. The schnauzer also has been one that always barks whenever anyone comes to the house or just for no reason. I will admit, we have not been very good at training of her. She has never shown aggression towards anyone and is very loving. But I know that she is also very territorial being a terrier. The chihuahua was found at around 4 weeks of age, abandoned without teeth. She has shown her teeth on a few rare occasions but is very untrained. Our yard is undergoing a major remodel so she has been unable to go outside to the bathroom and never has been house trained so she is peeing and pooping throughout the house. She is afraid of the leash and does jump up on people. She also will not come at all when called and has to be chased down. I would love for a few things to happen here: 1. for the schnauzer and the chihuahua to be friends which could be good for the older dog in her last few years of life, 2. for both dogs stop using my house as a bathroom, 3. for the chihuahua to come and to learn to walk also on the leash, 4. and finally, for the chihuahua to show now aggression towards anyone and to always be loving and dependable. My goal is to have two balanced dogs and to have a clean house. Our family has a great respect for Mr. Millan and admiration and I know that he would be able to work with our two dogs. We would greatly appreciate being considered for his attention and would love to give a balance and peaceful remaining years for the schnauzer, which is the older dog, and a great companion for the younger dog too. Thank you for your time and consideration in our situation.

Good morning. I have a 1 year old lab that I have got from the animal shelter. I love he dearly. But he does not repound to me at all. It take about three time to him to respond . He likes to dig . But I can get him to stop digging in the yard. He also takes off on me . He is not listening to the comands that I give to hime (not responding ). I'm having a hard time w/ him. He keeps eating wood chips that are in the front yard. I tell him no. But he still does it again. Not listen. I can leave him off his chain because i live on a buiness street in milwaukee. The cars are traveling fast down the road. I'm afraid that he going to get hit by a car.

I am a dog trainer in Texas and a breeder of bullmastiffs.I am having a problem with my dogs living together as a pack.I have don somthing wrong and have not been able to fix it.I own 7 dogs and cannot put them together without a fight and I know it's my fault because I do not deal well with dog fights.I know it's my own fear that is causing this problem and my lack of being a pack leader when they are together. If i have them on a leash I have full controle and am pack leader but without the leash I have no controle over the fighting .There is more to my story but I do not have the time to explain it all right now.It is frustrating for me because i am a trainer and understand dog behavor but I am not able to get past my own fear or dog fights and it is ruining my dogs lifes they are always kept apart and I would like to have them together as a pack and me as there fearless leader Please help I have more trust in faith in you then any other dog handler i have seen. thank you Dianna Stephans

I have a 3 year old doberman that i want to start rollerblading with. I was wanting to know the brand of rollerblades Cesar has. I think they would be comfprtable!

hello cesar,i have two beagle mixes at home and their names are twinkie and oreo. lets talk a little about oreo. She always wants to be protected when i try to discipline her and everytime when i give her a bath she whines at the top of her lungs so that everybody in the neighborhood can hear her. how do i make that stop also she digs, beggs for human food, and one major problem is jealousy she is also afraid of everything.oreo also pulls on the leash when we take her to the park and she basicly gags herself and she dont even care about it. lets talk about twinkie now. twinkie digs, beggs for human food, barks excessively at night and when a guest comes over to the house and she jumps up.She also trys to chase after the outside cats.twinkie also pulls a little bit on the leash. can you tell me how to end all of this.

Besides my two beagle mixes i also have a saint bernard. she will not eat her dog food but when we give her people food she always gobbles it down. When we let our puppies out of the yard cookie barges out of the gate and she runs near my other dog sheila and will not come back. can you please tell me how to end this.

I NEED HELP!!!!

I have a 5 yr old female beagle with the WORST separation anxiety I have ever seen. She is very loving and obedient however when I leave my home she howls, and cries for hours! Worst of all she has chewed a hole in my front door and that includes the side molding and the internal FRAME!! She has also chewed through my side gate. I have tried hidding treats around the house, the Kong, muzzle, scratch boots, dish soap, Bitter Apple, hot sauce, aluminum placed over the door, balloons tied tied to the door, medication, and now the kennal. NOTHING WORKS!!! In the kennal she freaks out shaking, panting, drewling, scrathing and biting to get out, all while crying and this goes on for HOURS! I am so lost with what to do I am about to get rid of her. Please give me some kind of advise I will try ANYTHING!!

Thank you so much.
Miss Logan

I am the proud owner of a five month old Mini Dachshund name Toolie. She is such a wonderful addition to our family...so smart and loving. Lately, however, she has begun to bark at every little noise she hears. I know that she is a dog and barking is there way of communicating, but how do I stop her from barking at everything? We take her on frequent walks and have socialized her from a very early age. I'm confused as to why she has become such a barker. Is this just the breed or is there something I could be doing to prevent this?

What can you tell me about the roller blades and where can they be purchased?

Thank you

I just brought home a Beagle mix from the animal shelter. He is afraid of everything, Especially a leash. I have had him for about three days and he has started to walk on a leash and urinate while is on the leash. He will not have a bowel movement while he is on a leash and I have taken him to my grandmother's house b/c she has a fenced in yard. When he is there he will have a bowel movement b/c(I'm guessing) he is not a leash. I'm moving in 15 days to a place that does have a fenced in yard but is there anything I can do until then to ease him. Also, he will just be lying down and start to do a crying sort of bark....It's piercing! Any suggestions??????
