Baseball Dog (Airs Friday, February 23)

Separation anxiety not only occurs when an insecure, high-energy, or anxious dog is left behind at home, but also, as in the case of Debbie and Joe’s “baseball dog,” at close range.

The truth is, it’s in dogs’ nature to be with its pack 24 hours a day. But in order for them to live with us, they have to learn to become somewhat independent and this can create anxiety.

Your dog must learn that you can be in the same room but you are doing something else and he is doing something else. If you give the dog attention all the time, he learns to become addicted to it. You open a door and he’s right there. You go to the restroom and he’s right there. He becomes your shadow.

Anxiety comes from a lack of being challenged and not being able to understand detachment. When you exercise your dog and he reaches his limitation, he’ll naturally go into resting mode. He’ll stop following you simply because he’s tired.

Wow! I didnt realize that my actions were contributing to to why my new dog thinks he has to be where ever I am. I really thought it was an obedience thing and I was really thrilled. Now I can see it as an anxiety behavior that I have been rewarding with good dog pets when he is right there when I sit down...wherever.

It is one more example where even though I am doing well, with entering and leaving the space and not creating excited behavior during feeding, still here is another area where MY inconsistent behavior contributes to problems in his behavior that are small but could become big with time!

I'm confused. Our dog follows me from room-to-room...literally waits until I'm finished with whatever and follows me to the next room. She always lies down and is calm and waits. I wouldn't think this was anxiety, because she's obviously "calm, submissive"... but does the fact that she needs to constantly follow me indicate insecurities!???

This is my question. My Jack Russel is as wellbehaved as I ask of him. I am movement challanged and probly not the best match for a J.R., but I was the one there when he needed a refuge after "Katerna", and now have we have bonded. He spends his time on a pillow by my chair and in my chair with me . He also follows the same behavior Cindy decribes, and I have the same question.

I have a question for anyone who might could help. My husband, 9 year old daughter and I have a 2 year old Yorkie. She is a wonderful, affectionate dog and very attached to us. My daughter is in school all day and my husband and I both work. Bella appears to be very sad in the mornings when we leave and I feel bad leaving her at home alone all day. We are considering getting another Yorkie as a companion for Bella. Is this a good idea? We spend a lot of time with her when we are at home. Our Yorkie is very social and enjoys company of any kind. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We have had our miniature snauzer, Lexi, for almost a year now. We are both away from the house all day and unfortunatly Lexi has to stay at home by herself. When we leave we can hear her high pitched yelps and whining all the way down the driveway and when we get back she has completely destroyed anything in her sight, even the walls. I think she might have seperation anxiety and I'm really worried about her and also afraid to leave her at home. What should we do?

Do you have any comments from others concerning how to stop a dog from jumping a fence.. we have to chain our Boxer because he jumps a 4'fence with ease.. I dislike chaining a dog but we feel we have no choice ..we watch Cesar all the time but have never seen anything concerning fence jumping.

We have 2 dogs, a chauluia, and american/rednose pitt mix. The little dog barks at everything. And roxy the big cog is very dog or cat agg. I 'm a loyal watcher of your show and find it helpful only roxy tends to want to lead or walks I know she needs the walks but they are draining for me. How can I get her to let me be the leader of this pack? Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much much for what I've already got from your shows, and do believe you are a truely amazing man Keep up the good work. I would like to be so much more involved in what you and your family is doing!

Hola,
Our family just wanted to say that we enjoy each and every show. It is so incredible how you work with these animals and change their lives, along with their owners.
We like to believe that our baby, Dolce is well behaved, in the home but CANNOT BE WALKED. Dolce, a female, 1 1/2 year, 14 pound, miniture Schnauzer who takes us for a walk. Panting, running, barking and attacking other in her path is the reason why her walks are limited. With each show, my husaband and I have learned so much and have implement new techniques but can't seem to get Dolce to follow our comands while walking her. I understand that you get mass amounts of emails and are extremly busy but a response would be greatly appriciated.
Your Friends, Erika, Juan and Dolce

NEED HELP - I got my son (a Medical student) and his wife a Springer Spaniel pup a year ago. His wife already had an older Beagle. Anyway - he did not crate the pup from the beginning as we have always done. NOW the year old Pup destroys everything in the house when they are gone and also destroys the crate I gave them to put him in. Obviously the crate should have been used from the start But wasn't. What can they do now to control the dog when they are gone from the house. This is definitely hurting their relationship and their home. He lays down at their feet at night and is calm but goes crazy when left. PLEASE PLEASE Help them.

A good trainer in the area of Madison would help - PLEASE help save the house and marriage!!

Hello,
I have a 4 month year old golden doodle... Herbie. He is a great dog, and we have done a good job thus far in training him basic obedience tricks. He sits, stays, lies down, come, give a paw, can loose leash walk for the most part. However, my dream is to eventually run with him. Whenever I have tried to run with him, he immediately starts to nip at my ankles, and jump up, almost like he wants me to stop. When I revert back to a walk, he eventually calms down, and starts to loose leash walk again. Is there any hope for Herbie and I to share on of my favorite activities together?

Dear Cesar,
Hi My family has a Maltese dog that is 1 years old going to be 2 years old on June 29th. Recently he has been barking alot when people comes to our door or outside. When people come in side he gets Snappy and a mean bark/growl. He is not like this at home with My kids or My husband and I. He is such a great family dog. He has no socialization with other people or dogs.
Sincerly,
Janelle

Help! I have a 14 mth old shitzu x pom. Since I've had him I have not travelled. I have plans to travel to Sydney in July for 3 nights. "Jet" will stay with my cousin (who has the mother). My problem is that when I have taken Jet to my cousin's house he sits at their back door scratching wanting to come inside to be with me. (At home he spends the majority of his time inside). Is there anything I can do to prepare him so he's not distressed and I can enjoy my weekend away?

I have a question about a problem with my 8 year old Springer Spaniel, who has always been a loving, well-behaved dog. Recently, he wakes me up in the night, panting and pacing around, as well as trying to get under the table next to my bed. There is no calming him. He may go out for a few minutes, but is the same when he comes back. If I shut him out of the bedroom, he scratches and whines at the door endlessly. He does not sleep on my bed, but several times I have let him in hopes it would calm him. It does not, in fact he stands on me! After an hour (or more) of this, he becomes exhausted and falls back to sleep. He did it once, then a second time two days later, and now a third five days later. Any ideas what this might be about?

One of our dogs is a 7mo old Yorkie. Nearly 2mo ago she began barking at people and other animals. I don't think our routine changed much at that time. A week ago, we introduced a new dog into the family, A 2y old german shepherd. They play fine together, but it seems that since we introduced the two, the Yorkie barks at others more than ever. Im sure she's just showing off, but how can I get this to stop? It hurts my ears and riles up the other pets in the neighborhood.

My husband and I work at home. Our mature, 7 years old, dog in good health (no bladder problems) pees on our furniture and rugs when we go out for an evening and occasionally during the night. Occasionally he will deficate as well. What can we do? I suggested putting him in a crate when we are gone. What is the best solution for this problem?

I rescued a 5 year old golden in October. She is a lovely girl. She like to be on the same floor of the house as me. She can be happy in any room as long as she knows where I am.
All of a sudden she has to be a foot away from me. It is almost like she is frightened. Why all of a sudden has she become spooked.?

Hello, I have a 2year old doxie that for the past 6 mos has been urinating on corners of his bed and corners of curtains actually anything that has a edge only when I leave the house even if we have gone to the park and worked out. He is not neutered and a lot of people have told me thats why. I try to discipline him by doing a stern no after smelling the site but then sometimes he growls.I am at my wits end of trying to figure it out.

My parents have a big problem. They inherited a 2 year old female pure lab. They already own two other dogs one female 11yrs, and male 12yrs old. The lab constantly jumps up on my mom and attacks the other two dogs. Both the older dogs that been diagnosed with a joint cancer. When my mom or anyone turns there back one of the dogs were thinking the female 11 yrs old pee's on the carpet and floor. Were not totaly sure she is the one to do this. All the dogs also bark at everything and don't listen when you tell them no or quiet. The lab also thinks she can jump up on both the couchs she ripped up. Please help my parents I really think they could use your help. Amber Dobberstein of Minnesota

We have a 13 year old golden retriever who has had significant problems with his legs. So it is hard for him to move around and he doesn't get much exercise. The problem is at night he barks for 2-3 hours straight. We think it is separation anxiety and that he just wants to be around us. His hearing isn't very good and we also have him on a few meds including Rimadyl, Benadrul and SOloxine for his legs and bad skin problems. We simply want some ideas to have him stop barking at night and sleep soundly. That way we will sleep soundly. Thanks.
