Protective Puppy

When dogs first became domesticated, humans admired their protective instincts. They felt safer knowing that their dogs’ barks and growls would warn them against predators. Today, we still sometimes think of our dogs as our protectors, but when that instinct goes awry, there can be trouble.

When one dog becomes overly protective of another, the one being protected becomes the “property” of the other. But as always, if you are seen as the pack leader, any new dog you bring in to the household will automatically know where their place is in the pack. If your leadership is questionable, your dog may take it on herself to assume responsibility for the weaker members of the pack.

I consider Cesars lessons on the "claiming" behavior that a dog does to be one of the top three most important and valuable that has changed everything for both the house members AND my ability to work with rehabbing rescues quickly!

It was the Hoss and Greta episode that brought that light bulb moment to me when Cesar said that one must claim back all the furniture pieces (bed/chair/chouch/window/door...),each one separately!

Suddenly, I was able to see how dogs "claim" people too.
My boyfriend (who to this day, tends to think of dog as friend, loved that my rescue beagle and the chow would come in the morning and lay on top of him for pets, still not seeing how this is the dog claiming the person, saying "he is MINE!"

Now I am very watchful for the chow in particular who oh so casually cuts between the other dogs and I, when he does that, I step around him with a "tsst" to hold his attention and cut HIM off from the pack by stepping between the pack and him!
He stops the behavior immeidately when this happens.

I also noted that everyday the leadership is tested. When I became sick with a viral pneumonia last spring that took months to recover from, the claiming behavior escalated very dramatically! (Thank HEAVENs for Cesar's way on the tread mill -
which by the way, I came back from his seminar and had SUCH clarity that I was able to put all four dogs on it with no leashes just like Fire Dog Wilshire! Even better, Marley lab/greyhound loves it so much that he does a second round with Buddy beagle, side by side!

hi ceaser, im a real big fan of your show,i watch it all the time.I have a Brittany spaniel puppy who is about 9 months old. she can be out of controll sometimes and other times she is calm. she takes stuff out of the garbage, she wont leave my other dog alone who is 8 years old,she takes stuff out of thr rooms and chews it and when you try to get it from her she runs away acting like its a game, when you open the front door she darts out and doesnt stop.My dad and my little sister are not calm when there around her. they yell and scream and that only sics her even more.My dad thinks my other dog is the perfect dog in the world. i think shes the inctigator and my dad doesnt think so. i would really appreaceat it if you can send me tips on how to make my puppy happy and balanced. Hi Cesar,
I watch your show all the time {even repeats}, my boy friend of 3 years has a 10 yr. old shepard mix that seems to have adopted me. He follows me everywhere, listens to me before he listens to his owner my boyfriend. Question, I recently rescued a 10 week old husky.....older dog was more tolerant of him as a puppy but now that hes 9 months old .....older dogs name is Austin, he as boyfriend puts it gets jealous. Now I know this is not an emotion a dog has, its more of a dominant behavior, here is the question, how do I train my boyfriend to stop treating old dog like human being? The husky is very good tempered and great natured very well behaved, but with the sqabbles between the dogs the husky prefers to be outside away from older dog austin. Another question, is it ok that the husky stays out most of the time? He has a beautiful dog house fresh food and water all the time, my nieghbors say he cant be out as much as he is, is this true? Lost in the Katahdin region,
your fan,
Erin

Hi Ceaser, I am a huge fan of your show, though I have just discovered it two months ago, I am hooked. I have an older dog who is a black lab mix (not sure with what). He is 10 years old and the only main concern I have with him is that he has horrible 'communication skills' with other dogs. He has some dog friends, but when he encounters them on the street, he reacts with hostility. I have been practicing your techniques, and I think they are working. Thank you so much for what you are doing for people and animals.

The main reason I am writing in, my sister-in-law just got her first puppy. The two main issues they are working on is training the puppy to do her business outside and biting. When they try to discipline the puppy, she barks at them and bites them. I have been trying to help, but as she is not my dog and I am not living with them, there is not a lot I can do. Are there any techniques or advice you can give (mostly for the biting)? Thank you again, and keep it up!

I think that you do an amazing job with your work. My mother and i love you. You seem to amaze me with your work and you train the dogs right and without abuse. Keep the job up.

Love

Hello Cesar, I really enjoying your show and find it incredibly helpful. I have a two year old Rhodesian Ridgeback. After a long hard puppy-hood he finally has achieved a calm submissive state - that is until I brought his little 2 month old sister home recently. He is relatively patient with her but she is relentless with him. Several people I have talked to about this have said that I should not interrupt their rough play because he is teaching her proper dog etiquette but he has a good 75 lbs on her and sometimes it seems as though he gets very frustrated with her and I do not want her to get hurt. She seems oblivious to this however. She has no fear and just keeps coming back for more. Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Cesar!
I have been watching your shows for about two years now and just want you to know how you have improved our lives. I am certainly not a dog expert, however my two cocker spaniels are becoming mostly well behaved when we have guests, ( I used to have to put them behind a closed door), and when we have someone just knocking on the front door, (they no longer charge and bark). I am so grateful to you for your shows, I truly believe you are changing the dog social world for thousands of people.

Thanks Again

hi cesar,
I love youre show and im happy you have shown people the bright side of the pitbull. I have had two pits that have past and have just got my 3rd. He is 6.5 weeks old his mother past when he was under a month and the breeder said to pick him up, so i did now he is showing signs of dominince and agression my other dogs never did. It started a couple of days ago first he tryed to hump my arm isnt he a little young for that? Next he turned into a snarling growling furball couse i took garbage away from him next he found a piece of carpet that smelled good n was tearing it out i touched his bumm n said no and he growled, Then i pulled him away from it and he lunged at me. Also he likes to bite socks especialy with feet in um so i put my hand around his mouth and push is lips under his teeth tell he lets go hes snarled at me for that to. this could be a real problem and need to fix it before hes 110lb crazy biter what do I do?
