A Lack of Vision

When dogs ask for direction, our answers should be given through discipline. And by discipline, I don't mean simply giving corrections. Discipline maintains order and lets a dog know his position within a pack. It is what allows the dog to feel safe.

Some people are reluctant to discipline a dog with a physical handicap. Dogs don’t feel sorry about themselves, so we shouldn’t either! It's okay to provide discipline; it is what your dog needs. Take your dog's particular disability into account and find a safe way to provide a correction.

If a dog is in an anxious state, the pack leader needs to step in and tell the dog to calm down. In this particular case, the dog is healthy; he just can’t see. Using the physical touch isn’t going to hurt him. By using physical touch to discipline, the owner is able to remind the dog of his rules, boundaries, and limitations. Remember, a physically disabled dog still has the same basic needs as a healthy dog.

First - for everyone. Please check out the books by Patricia McConnell (The Other End of the Leash) and Victoria Stillwell (of It’s Me or the Dog). They use MUCH easier and simpler techniques than Cesar, and do NOT rely on being an alpha leader (in the dominating way) the way Cesar does, which causes people to be too dominant, and can backfire badly. I’m sure I just offended 95% of the people on this list, but please hear me out. While people who have tried to make this same point on this blog have managed to make the point in a way that would NOT reach most fans, they do have some good points. Dogs are dogs, and humans are humans, NOT alpha dogs. We need to help dogs understand how to live in our world, not try to make it like what we think theirs should be. Plus, dogs are NOT tame wolves - dogs have evolved with us, and it is NOT effective to act like a wolf pack leader. Please research the dog training world’s feelings on Cesar, their concerns are NOT based on jealousy!

Also - if your dog is having problems, don’t wait til you can contact Cesar (or anyone!) through a tv show or email. Please - there are great dog trainers and animal behaviorists in most communities - a good place to start is at your vet. Find someone who uses positive training techniques, is willing to be patient and clear with you, and who you trust.

Good luck!

This message is for Tara, Please do not worry about offending we followers of Cesar, we simply feel sorry for your ignorance and misunderstanding of his (Cesar's) hard work and expertise. Unless the books you speak of claim that tying the leash to yourself and then your dog and falling asleep just to wake up to a perfect dog, then perhaps you should actually try his techniques instead of critisizing them!! I can not think of anything easier than a structured walk with your beloved pet. I have four children and a cockapoo 4yrs. and a high energy pitbull 3 mos. My new puppy loved to play too rough with my very mellow older dog. Thanks to Cesar's show I walk my dogs together and they behave like different dogs now!! It takes a lot of work and dedication not to mention consistency; however, it is cheaper than a gym membership (I like to be in shape) and my dogs are perfect citizens! So don't worry about offending us just go to the gym get in shape and maybe Cesars technique will be clearer for you! Come on what could be easier WALK your dog..exercise, discipline, affection! GOOD LUCK!!

Funny reading this blog. Cesars videos are also funny viewing in spots.

When I decided to get a dog I started researching dog training and nearly decided to not get a dog because I did not want a dog that performed for treats, had to be clicked at or punished, nor did I want to play silly pack leader mind games with it.

What is most funny about Cesars videos is that sometimes he gets it right and clearly illustrates the collaborative family dynamic that a group of dogs will form when not stressed, yet still runs around trying to dominate dogs with his big muscle chest. What makes it even more funny is that the dogs have no idea what he is trying to do. At best they will be bemused, at worst frightened. Fear will often get a dog to do what you want right now, but how will it affects its future state of mind, behaviour and relationships?

I do not understand why National Geographic makes this programme, are they not usually the makers of quality, well researched documentaries?

Everyone who follows this blog should check out the following links: these folks are much closer to the mark than your friend Cesar. And quite frankly I am sick of walking my dog around people who are aggressive and often cruel towards their dogs. No wonder they have behavioural problems.

Of most significance is the nonlinear dogs link, especially the part about dominance. Very interesting reading. I am using the natural training principals with my own dog and it is fun, we both enjoy it and my dog is remaining the happy and confident soul that was presented to me when he was 8 weeks old. What de we do? We play!

I'm tring to contact Cesar Millan by E-mail if any one of you know his E-mail address Please contact me to my at MODERATOR'S NOTE: Please do not post personal information to the blog. It will be deleted. Thank you.
