Teacher’s Pet
If your dog bites you, perhaps while making your Dog Whisperer submission video, it’s important not to take it personally. We may think the reason we were bitten or growled at is because they’re trying hurt us. But dogs don’t rationalize.
If a dog bites, pulls, or does something I don’t agree with it, I don’t take it personally. By keeping calm and neutral, I am able to come up with solutions. If I let it get to me and get into a “fight, flight, or avoidance” state of mind, it doesn’t help me or the dog I'm working with.

thats such a great lesson, one that will help greatly with people as well. As soon as there is any conflict it is easy to get emotional and take things personally. I always get so excited when you point out little pearls of wisdom that dogs can teach us about being better leaders for our human packs as well.
I'm moving back home in 4 weeks and will finally be able to get a dog, I cant wait :p
Cheers Cesar, you rock bro
We are new to owning a puppy (Scottish terrier, born in March) and so am I new to all the knowledge, learning and training...and that's just for me, not the dog! My husband watched an episode of the Dog Whisperer and got me hooked. Since I've been watching Cesar I've also done alot of research on training. It's a little overwhelming as there are so many techniques out there. I've put into practice several things Cesar has talked about and even though my puppy is only 5 months old she seems to be balanced and happy...not to say that she is perfect by any means, she still has a long way to go. It's very discouraging to read some of the blog comments that are on different sites that put Cesar down saying that he doesn't know what he's talking about. I don't think there is any ONE right way to do things, I think you have to look what will work for you and your dog. As for me, Cesar makes sense with what he says and the things that I have tried with my own puppy seems to have worked (or has begun to work) so you can't tell me that Cesar is "full of it" and doesn't know what he's talking about. Whatever you do and however you decide to train and take care of your dog you have to believe in it and have a positive attitude. That's one thing I have learned, if you have any negativity whatsoever your dog will sense it and you might as well forget doing anything that day because nothing will go right.
Thanks Cesar!
Hola sesar . estoy imprecionado y orgulloso de to saviduria que tienes para dominar esos perros locos ; mandame un consejo si esposible de tener ese poder con caballos
It is complicated to teach other people not to take it personally when their dog bites. Have you any advice on how to "train" other people that way?
Thanks a lot.
need help with my dogs i have a 125p.boxer and a bulldogmixpit they fight and cant stop it.
I wanted to know more about Maurene. The girl that you showed today with dogs Sammy, the other name escapes me. She was doing so well with walking and I wanted to tell her that walking with two dogs like that, I don't think my friend Carrie, who has had to learn to walk over the years could learn to do in a day. She is still half in a wheel chair. I think that it is wonderful what you do. Thanks for doing it.
That is why a dog can bite and then the next second act as though nothing happened. They think in the moment and don't rationalize what is right and wrong. They just react.
Great article! As a professional dog trainer it is easier for me to communicate with client dogs; I don't have all of the emotion wrapped up in the situation like the family of the pet does. This is also why I have to laugh at myself with my own dogs, as I will find myself frustrated and conveying negative energy when things don't go as planned. Only when I let go and calm my voice and myself do things turn around. This reminder of the value of patience & kindness is just another good lesson our loyal companions give to us, if we learn to give them proper guidance and leadership.
I work with special needs children and I have always been able to not take it personally when they are having physically acting out behaviors. But I am going to need more practice when it comes to my dog as we encounter challenges on the walks. But I have set a goal with her and the follow thru is going to get us there. I am thinking I may need an E- collar for my tongue in the mean time.lol
