Canine 911, Part 2: Woof and Wheels

When dealing with dogs, confidence means assertiveness and motivation means consistency. If you’re not projecting confidence and motivation, your dog can never move from a negative state of mind.

A dog will have a hard time trusting somebody who does not lead with confidence. Challenge yourself and your dog by creating goals, big or small, every day. Your accomplishments really depend on how badly you want it, right?

Dogs are pack animals, always looking for leadership. This must be applied consistently, don't drop the lead just because you don't feel up to it one day!

I have watched The Dog Whisperer since it's inception and I don't think I've missed many shows. But this episode was so unique. As usual, Caesar helped the dog, Bo, in this segment. But his real value was in what he did for Anita. He brought her back into life again. He didn't give up on her. But for me, the incredible part of the show was when Caesar is watching Anita demonstrate Bo's talents as a service dog to a 1st grade class. Of course I have seen him smile and grin in every show. But the look on his face as he watches Anita during the demonstration was priceless. He seems to have a look of such pride for what he has helped this lonely lady accomplish. It was one of the most touching things I have seen in a very long time. Beautiful!

Hello, I saw the episode where the woman was in a wheelchair and her dog was afraid of the bus that was so necessary to her survival. I just want her to know you are not alone. When Cesar said "When you are in a panic mode where do you go" and she said "Nowhere i am kind of a hermit not by choice" Well do not be a hermit you can come to me. i know i am come from the middle of nowhere but she can come to me. No one should be alone and i understand where she comes from. I think no one should be lone. And she seems so nice and sweet she just needs an outlet to turn to. She has her fantastic dog, but if she needs to talk I am available. I am sure she has lots of people offering these things to her. So what i do have to offer is this. You are a wonderful person and you deserve happiness. Do not be afraid of the world there people out there who just want to be around people just like like you we are no different, Think about Beau he wants to be around people an dogs. I know i need to. We both need the same thing. I just heard your story about the man who said "You need to be on this show" Well i am glad you were. I saw you and realized I need to be around people again as well.

Anita is a hero, overcoming not only her own disabilities, but she overcame her fear of talking in pubic to the elementary school kids about Beau's remarkable skills! Talk about a strength of character. She is truly hiding her light under a basket. Her quiet demeanor and perseverance through all the trials in her life are truly admirable.

Please! Keep reaching out to children. I think exposing them to what true human strength looks like will empower them through life, and teach them empathy for others. Just like the man who helped Anita to the front of the line to meet the producers.... What she gave those children is an insight not only to how dogs can help people, but how people can help people! Anita is a real American hero. She just needs to believe it.

I just watched watched the episode of the Dog Whisperer in the lady, Anita, with CMT (Charco Marie Toothe)
I was very interested in this episode because I have several members of my family with the same condition, my husband, his sister and one of our sons. I was very interested because of the condition the lady was in was just like my late mother-in-law and her mother. This condition has been a problem for our family and a real concern for me because we are sure that our son has the condition also.
I was very impressed with the service dog, Beau, and his handler, Anita. I am interested in finding out what services are available for my sister-in-law. She is only 54 and has to walk with a cane now. I would like to find out some information for her.
I have trained several dogs in obedience and agility and have had a lot of satisfaction in working with my dogs to listen and behave for me and my family.
I would like to find out what I can do to finish a dog as a service dog. If there is some way to that I could do this, please contact me about where I can go.
Thank you,
Cathy Sengstock

Dear Dog whisperer,

We have a 4 month old Doberman Pincher. Could you please give us some tips on how to train him.
Please right back soon.

From,
Benjamin

I can see how belief has a ripple affect. Anita was leaving her house but she herself was under stress which was being passed to Beau. When Cesar told her she could change the conversation for the sake of Beau she was able to see the results right away and it gave her more confidence. Each exercise built on that, the bunny exercise, going to get the bunny, and going to the school and giving the children the demonstration of what Beau could do. I can use that in my work with special needs children.

I agree wholeheartedly! I have worked w/ troubled dogs as a trainer for the past 10 yrs and can say that the "people" I train have to want it bad enough for change to happen. The dog/s can only begin to heal by their owners example!!

This is something that seems to be the obvious problem when walking into the majority of homes with "problem" dogs. You are so right.

I was asked to take a young German Shepherd and train it in one month for a man who had purchased it as a pet. It was obvious from the start of training that this dog had no boundaries, no limitations on behavior and no self-control. By being firm and rewarding only for good behavior along with a lot of consist training, I was able to get this dog to heel next to me without chewing on my hand as well as sit and pay attention to me at all times. When the man came to pick up his dog, I had him walk with the pup and he was amazed.

Cesar, I love your show and have learned a lot over the years and implement many of your techniques into my own training. Thank you.

I just wanted to share that I have a small lap dog who I bring to work for pet visits for a skilled nursing facility. I cannot tell you the joy she brings to our residents. She is four year old and I have been bringing her since she was just six weeks old. My dog trusts me when I bring her to facility and place her with a resident.
