Rescuing Riley

NAME: Riley
BREED: Saint Bernard
AGE: 11 months
ABOUT THE DOG: The Smith family purchased Riley from a breeder when he was four-months-old. Though mom, Patti fought for a smaller dog, the rest of the family was set on a Saint Bernard. As the pup grew, so did his fear of stairs. Now, Riley weighs 141 pounds and remains firmly grounded on the main floor. When it's bath time, Riley must be sprayed with the hose outside because the only bathtub is on the upper level of the house.
ABOUT THE OWNERS: Patti and Jim Smith live in Moorpark, California with their 13-year-old daughter Allison. They also have a 19-year-old daughter, Michelle.
BEHIND THE SCENES: Even though Cesar's first plan for Riley's rehabilitation didn't work, the entire stair exercise with the giant Saint Bernard took only 25 minutes.

Watching Cesar struggle with Riley was interesting. The dog weighed more than Cesar and Cesar was huffing and puffing when that rehab was over. As usual, calm/assertive Cesar prevailed. Darn!! That man is Good!
I actually had this same stair issue with my lab when I first got him. He was about three years old at the time, and he was terrified of going down a flight of stairs. When I brought him home, he crept up the stairs, but in the morning he didn't want to come down. It took my sister and me three days to teach him how to go down stairs. The first day I took his rear end, she took his front end, and we carried him downstairs. The second day I put him half way accross my lap, and we scooted down the stairs. Then on the final day, I blocked my dog's exit at the top of the stairs and kept moving down behind him; he had no other choice but to walk himself downstairs. After that, I never had another problem with his fear of staircases. I probably could have acheived the third day's result on the first day if I'd figured out that blocking his retreat forced him to overcome his fear.
