Nacho's Beef

DOG: Nacho
BREED: Chihuahua
AGE: 4 ½-years-old
ABOUT THE DOG: Nacho can be very people-aggressive, especially if someone tries to take a toy or object away from him. He's also very protective of his owner, Gloria, and will try and bite anyone who comes near her. He's earned the nickname "Velcro" because he's always by Gloria's side. Meet Nacho in an all-new Dog Whisperer this Friday at 8P et/pt!
ABOUT THE OWNERS: Daniel and Gloria Don have been married for 35 years, and have owned several dogs, though Nacho is the only one to give them problems.
BEHIND THE SCENES: During a filming break, Cesar and the crew had lunch at D.Z. Aikn's in San Diego. A staff member had Cesar sign a photo to hang up on the wall.

Nacho is cute! Chihuahuas have a tendency to be one person dogs. I have one Chihuahua who prefers me but is socialized and likes to be held by strangers. She is a wonderful companion. On the downside, I just adopted a second Chihuahua that yips and pees when ever my boyfriend or I try to pick her up. This is making it difficult for us to housebreak her and bond with her. We are her 3rd home. Her previous owners gave her to me because of this behavior. I hate to let her go. If any dog/Chihuahua lovers have any advice please share, I'd appreciate it!!! I barely know where to begin. http://www.atempestinateapot.com
A Chihuahua is certainly not one type of dog I would choose to own. They just seem a lot of trouble if people don't know how to handle them. It's horrible to think that so many dogs end up in the ASPCA and other such charities.
I have a very sweet long-haired chihuahua, but she can be very shy with strangers. I think she just is a little afraid, but never mean or aggressive because she is so small and kind of overwhelmed when people want to approach her. She usually warms up after she can smell the person and approach on her terms. Maybe instead of going to pick her up, wait until she comes to you to for attention and jumps on your lap. They usually are very cuddly and affectionate, but can react badly...aggressively or fearfully...hence the peeing, when they feel threatened in any way. Just try to be patient and let her come to you. Instead of picking her up to take her out, maybe just try letting her walk outside(after you), and use a leash if you need to. Maybe she just needs to feel more safe and secure since she has had 3 different homes. I wouldn't trade my chihuahua for anything...she is a great dog...am not and expert, but just know that chihuahuas need a lot of patience and love...and definitely a pack leader!
She probably feels afraid or anxious. It also doesn't sound like you have her trust yet. Remember Cesar's, "no touch, no talk and no eye contact" to lessen her fear or excitement. Remain calm and allow her to come to you or only give her attention (gently, approaching from the side) when she is calm and submissive.
