A Veteran's Perspective

Chris DeRose
Investigator, Last Chance For Animals

As a veteran investigator of 30 years I have seen and witnessed many horrible things done to animals. To be an effective investigator, you learn to separate your emotions from your intellect. Your job is to photograph, videotape and document what is going on and to put these people in prison and out of business for good, so it can't happen to any more animals. Next thing is you use this documentation to change laws and to make a permanent change for the animals. It never gets easy. When you go home at night and put your head on the pillow, that's when you have to deal with your demons.

I did my first investigation into a puppy mill about 23 years ago and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The cages were piled 3 tiers high and the pups in the top cage were urinating and defecating on the ones below. These dogs were kept in an outdoor enclosure and it was dead of winter. The pups on the bottom literally had ice forming on their bodies and were shaking profusely. The look on their faces is something I will never forget.

I investigated a case in Elko, Nevada where the temperature dropped down to 16 below zero chill factor. It got so cold that the owners abandoned their trailers, leaving these helpless animals to the harsh elements and certain death. When we got there, most of the animals were already dead - frozen in place. There were other animals as well such as rabbits and cats. Three months later, one of the dogs that survived this horrendous ordeal jumped off a sofa and all four of his legs broke because of what he went through. Hundreds and hundreds of the other animals weren't so lucky. All I can think of was that I wanted to destroy the place so that no one would ever come back and start up that horrible business again.

I have been a supporter of Last Chance for Animals and Chris DeRose for over 25 years! It's about time they got some national exposure for the great work they do. Thank you for doing an episode on their amazing work. I can't wait to watch it.

Cool! Can't wait to see the episode with LCA/DeRose. They are like Delta Force of animal rescue! Thank you Cesar for bringing us shows like this!

What a great pairing -- America's best known dog trainer and America's best animal abuse investigation organization. Thanks for bringing the issue of puppy mills to the attention of Nat Geo viewers. I respect Cesar for his education efforts and I respect LCA/Chris DeRose for his unfailing committment to animal welfare. Both Cesar and Chris share a common love and respect for animals. My hats off to the producers, sponsors, and participants for tackling this importmant issue.

In spite of increased publicity in the past few years, many people do not know or recognize how horrendous the conditions are at puppymills. Thank you for exposing this cruelty and allowing others to know and see the facts. I look forward to see more investigation shows with Last Chance for Animals on National Geographic as well as other networks!

LCA (Last Chance for Animals) is the best animal abuse
investigative organization in the country. I also applaud Cesar's
work w/ helping people better understand dog behavior thus leading the owner and dog (s) to a much happier life.
I've been a member of LCA for several years, and Chris Derose
is a straight shooter. He tells it like it is. Thanks to the sponsors and producers for bringing this horrendous issue to the public's attention. People need to know puppy mills are still out there and they need to be shut down.
Chris Derose is a phenomenal spokesperson for the animals.
His work comes from the heart as does Cesar's and his commitment to dogs and their well-being. What a fantastic idea to put these two together. I look forward to more shows on animal-related stories, hopefully featuring LCA and Cesar and their continued arduous work.

I've been a friend and supporter of Chris Derose and the wonderful folks at Last Chance for Animals for nearly 13 years. I was fortunate enough to live next door to Chris for over 7 years and I learned quickly that he not only talked the talk but he walked the walk. Still living now in his tiny one bedroom down the street from his office Chris lives modestly and everything he does or makes goes back to the animals. Still driving the same old car. this man is dedicated! How fortunate I am to have know Chris and LCA. I will continue to support them in every way possible for ever!

Sincerely

Erin in Florida

Chris DeRose was the inspiration that turned my sister and I into proactive animal activists. DeRose is the pioneer of all animal abuse investigations and single handedly exposed puppy mills, bringing them to the forefront of the media. DeRose merging with Cesar, "The Dog Whisperer", was the greatest "dream team" ever made. Cesar has "saved" more dogs that were "red listed", while other high profile animal organizations would rather kill these "unadoptable" dogs that were never given a chance.
Chris teaches us to adopt rather than shop for dogs (shopping supports puppy mills), while Cesar teaches people that anyone can "balance and handle" any dog, so they are socialized and adoptable, (calm submissive). With these two as a team, there will be no need for shelters or rescues for abandoned animals. We can start by putting this "dream team" into every educational curriculum and insitution.
Long live this K9 Dream Team,
Dog Whisperer and LCA!!!

I have been an avid follower of Chris Derose for well over a decade, the man is a true Hero! I was so relieved to see him get on Cesar Millan "Dog Whisperer" Show which has a large fan base, this episode brings much needed attention to what goes on behind the scenes of puppy mills. Amongst many others, I would love to see Chris Derose doing his own show on NatGeo allowing him to bring vital information to the mainstream.
Thank you

I feel very honored to have met Chris DeRose this evening. My dear friend Carmen assisted Chris many years ago with the publication of his book, In Your Face and told me when I moved to Los Angeles 11 years ago that I needed to meet him. Well here I am 11 years later working with the Last Chance for Animals crew assisting with some of the training for the wonderful pet stores who have chose to go humane. This is a true dream come true for me and I have to say hats off to you Chris, Kim and all at LCA for all that you do.

I can't wait to watch it! LCA are doing a great work and should be seen by many others!! Thank you for everything!!

This was a real eye opener into the deceitful background the of Puppy Mills which cover their dirty business with the face of an innocent and adorable puppy. Please continue the series with more follow up investigations.

Cesar, Kim, and LCA were able to expose puppy mills for what they are: compassionless businesses. It's awful that puppies and dogs are not being give the treatment which they deserve. I loved this show and look forward to many more with LCA!

Thank you,
