Inside Puppy Mills

NAME: Sophie
BREED: Pekingese
AGE: 5 years old
NAME: Lovey
BREED: Yorkshire Terrier
AGE: 6 years old
ABOUT THE DOGS: Sophie, aka Biter, a 5-year-old female Pekingese, was one of the dogs removed from World Kennels on May 2. Last Chance for Animals, the rescue group who took her in, believes that Sophie was born at World Kennels purely for breeding purposes and had never lived outside of her wire cage. Sophie is thought to have had 5 or 6 litters. LCA volunteer Kim Sill was the first human outside the kennels to have contact with Sophie. From day one, Sophie has been aggressive to every person she comes in contact with, except for Kim, to whom she is very attached.
Lovey is a three-legged Yorkie, also from World Kennels. She was first seen by LCA getting trampled by the other dogs in the cage. Once removed, she immediately started licking Kim. The licking started off cute but has since become a bit of a nuisance.
ABOUT THE OWNER: Founded in 1984 by Hollywood actor Chris DeRose, Last Chance For Animals advocates conscious and informed lifestyle decisions, and the organization is committed to disseminating truthful information about societal animal abuse to improve the treatment of animals. LCA continues to conduct undercover investigations with its many volunteers and has succeeded in putting puppy mill pet stores out-of-business and making puppy mill kennels compliant with USDA regulations. Learn more about the group at LCAnimal.org.
BEHIND THE SCENES: An initial edit of the Last Chance for Animals segment featured Cesar working with Sophie and Lovey, as well as a brief background of the puppy mill story. After the National Geographic Channel saw the segment, they wanted to do a longer and more involved story about LCA and its exposure of puppy mills. Dog Whisperer Producer Christina Lublin worked intensively with LCA, and they came up with an undercover investigation in which Cesar could participate, resulting in an hour-long look at what happens at a puppy mill.

I always knew not to buy puppies from a pet store, but had never really seen firsthand how inhumane they were. Thank you for airing this episode. It was a refreshingly brave stand for National Geographic to take. Thanks
Agreed! After seeing the these dogs in these horrendous conditions; blind dogs, over heated, cold starving we can no longer turn a blind eye to this! What an eye opener. I'd love to see a regular show (like they have for Best Friends -Dog Town) about this group Last Chance for Animals and the rescue efforts/undercover operations that they do!
Sincerely
E Elizabeth
Absolutely agree!! Chris and the LCA team do wonderful work and what a rivoting program. I want to see more!!!!
Thanks to NGC for airing this very special program. Chris, LCA and Cesar make a powerful team. Thanks for bringing awareness of the plight of animals in puppy mills and showing the compassion of those who wish to stop inhumane treatment of animals. It would be a great service to continue the collaboration between Cesar and LCA! Maybe a regular series?
I agree with Tami. I think it would be far more exciting than most of the reality series I see on television. It would definitely be up there with some of the great ones Nat Geo has like Dog Whisperer and Dog town! Thank you! :)

I have been an avid follower of Chris Derose for well over a decade, the man is a true Hero! I was so relieved to see him get on Cesar Millan "Dog Whisperer" Show which has a large fan base, this episode brings much needed attention to what goes on behind the scenes of puppy mills. Amongst many others, I would love to see Chris Derose doing his own show on NatGeo allowing him to bring vital information to the mainstream.
Thank you

Hear hear! What a powerful episode. It was so incredible to see Cesar and Chris working together. I would absolutely LOVE to see LCA featured on NatGeo. They do such important work, and a series featuring them could really effect the public's awareness of what goes on in the animal trade.
Thank you so much for airing this brave and extremely important episode!

Chris, LCA and Cesar make a very powerful combination exposing the horrible conditions of animals in puppy mills. There does need to be a show on NATGEO to keep this business in the public's awareness. Thanks to Cesar to getting involved in this cause .With Dog Whisperer's large fan base, I hope we all get involved in trying to solve this inhumanity.
Thanks NatGeo for deciding to expand this segment to the full hour. Puppy mills exist mostly due to an uninformed public, and the educational value of this coverage is huge. In addition to educating the public, the investigation, prosecution, and rehabilitation efforts are both exciting and meaningful, and would make great material for a continuing series, possibly in tandem with Cesar and/or Dog Town.
Thank you so much for airing this incredible episode! I truly am grateful to LCA and Cesar for all they did to help those dogs. I would love to see more shows like this. I feel it really helps the animals and lets people see up close and personal what really goes on. It also shows how people like LCA are on the job and dedicated to bring about justice for those who cannot speak. Please have more episodes like this one. LCA needs their own show... I feel it would bring positive change for animals. Thanks NatGeo for this informative episode and thanks to LCA and Cesar.

Thank you LCA and Cesar for the work you do and thank you National Geographic for airing this. This is a practice that shouldn't even be legal in a civilized "humane" nation, but since it is...the public must be educated...it's about time!
It's a wonderful way to wake people to how awful puppy mills are...thank you for helping to expose the truth.
What an interesting episode! I hope to see more episodes and shows of this kind. NATGEO should consider making a series. The combination of intrigue and compassionate justice is truly inspiring. I trust we will see more of these important and fascinating programs featuring LCA and Chris.
The show revealed the true story of puppy mills and we applaud Chris and Caesar for sharing their knowledge. Please allow Nat Geo to continue to educate people about the horrors of puppy mills in the U.S.and around the world.
Thank-you NATGEO so much for the Dog Whisperer:Inside Puppy Mills episode, it was very sad, but, quite a learning experience as well. I have known of Last Chance for Animals for a long time and it is because of them that I have not bought any dogs from pet shops and have been telling my friends not to as well, I have become very aware of the many other serious animal causes out there that need to be addressed also. LCA, under the helm of Chris DeRose, is to be commended for the long, hard, gut wrenching work that they have done in the name of and for the good of all animals everywhere. NATGEO should be very proud of the episode and the good that will come out of it and I hope you continue in your endeavors to help bring more public awareness to a very serious topic. Kudos to Cesar Millan as well, he has certainly gained my respect.
Please keep LCA in your sights cause there are a lot more episodes to be had from all the different animal causes that they have become involved in and the great work they have done.
Thank-you again
Thank you so much for airing these episodes! truly grateful to helping these poor dogs.Well done for the dedicated work Chris and LCA. Please have more episodes like this one. Thanks NatGeo for this informative episode and thanks to Chris and LCA.

Thank you Chris DeRose and LCA for an incredible show along with Caesar. Puppy mills need to be exposed for what they are and you certainly achieved that. The collaboration with Caesar was remarkable and it gave us insight into how these dogs can be rehabilitated. Thanks to Nat Geo for airing this episode and I believe more should be produced to educate those who continue to visit and purchase dogs from pet stores around the country. I've said it before Chris, you are a "warrior for the animals"!
I just lost my sister-in-law. Her last request to me was to see if Ceasar would be on Dancing with the Stars. He has everything it takes: looks, physique, patience. It would add another whole viewing audience and we would LOVE to see him. I've written to them as well. Please consider it, seriously. We love you, Ceasar.
Thank you very, very much for airing this very important information about these terrible puppy mills. We are so grateful to National Georgraphic, Ceasar Millan, and Chris De Rose for bringing this to the forefront so millions of people know the truth and hopefully will never buy a puppy from a puppy mill. Please air more investigative shows like this from Chris De Rose and any other animal cruelty issues. We wish you would air a show about the Canadian baby harp seals as this is so important to millions of people around the world. Thank you all for caring.
I have already seen these puppy mills on some RSPCA programs and it is really horrible. Poor innocent animals, it really make me feel sad. We need more people + organisation like Ceasar and National Georgraphic to bring this horror to public's attention in order to STOP it !
I love the dog whisperer show and am a fan of all the wonderful work Ceaser does. I was disappointed however that they didn't really portray how BAD Puppy Mills really are. I think Ceaser held back really showing how bad the situation is. I guess people who are interested can research. If you really want a taste of what they are really about not just sugar coated go on Oprah's Web site and archive the puppy mill piece she did. I couldn't stop crying the entire show. Ceaser has alot of influence and impact on the public because he is such a public figure I wish he would have showed more indepth the HORROR of puppy mills. This isn't to be taken lightly. I hope and pray that someday soon there will be no more puppy mills. I live not far from Lancaster PA and they are one of the cheif contributors in the US to the mills it makes me sick.
Thank you National Geographic for this great episode of the Dog Whisperer featuring the story about Puppy Mills and the work of Chris DeRose and his organization "Last Chance For Animals". It's about time someone has the guts to shed light on these horrible practices people employ for profit. It makes me sick to see sweet, helpless animals being taken advantage of and nobody is willing to go as far as Chris DeRose to show it to the public. His last documentary "Dealing Dogs" was one of the most heart wrenching things I've ever seen and we need more investigative reporting like it. The general public is asleep and has no idea what goes on behind closed doors and the only chance we will EVER have at a world that treats animals more humanely is by showing the horrible and brutal truth. And "Puppy Mills"are only the tip of the iceberg!! Please....show more shows like this!!
Thanks again,
Sandra Hess and Michael Trucco
I was glad i got to see the episode it was really awesome that ceaser was rehabating the dogs. I'm an huge fan of ceaser and i love watching his show because i learn so much. I've read books about dogs behavior but way I see Ceaser puts it in action it all comes together. Plus I volnteer at our animal shelter and I use Ceaser's advice bout stay calm and assertive. I hope I get to meet him someday
Chris DeRose is a true hero. Thank you NGC for featuring LCA on the Dog Whisperer. The truth must be told more often and kept in the public eye so that no one forgets those who can't speak for themselves.
I also would like to mention that i had loved the show and would like to see more investigation shows with Last Chance for Animals! This is very IMPORTANT and your help is needed to continue to have investigative shows on animal abuse!
THANK YOU Chris + LCA !
These people are true heroes, like the ASPCA Animal Cops. The lowest of the low are those who abuse the defenseless. Laws much be changed to make punnishment more harsh. The possibility of a small fine and/or short term incarceration is just not enough.
Cesar, Chris, et. al. keep it up! There is a special place in Heaven for all of you!!
I'd just like to add my big thanks, as well, to NatGeo, Mr. Millan, LCA, and all others who are doing their part to put an end to this horrid 'business'.
Well done!!
Many thanks to National Geographic for showing this horrific animal abuse to innocent and hapless animals. Chris and LCA have worked tirelessly for decades and brought many animal issues to the public's attention. We need more programs that inform the public about animal abuse, in all forms, that is ignored or unknown.
Maris Sidenstecker I
Love the work that LCA /Chris de Rose is committed to do and I think that more shows like that should be exposed to the public!!! Imagine what a show like that could accomplish?!!!
Thank you for making us all aware - it was horrifying yet such an eyeopener! Please show us more! Thank you Chris & the team of LCA for all the work you guys put into this and I look forward to seeing lots more.
Annemarie Scarpa
This was very hard to watch. I had no idea how horrible these dogs were treated.

Are there people still out there that do not know what happens at puppy mills? incredible ;(
Is there anything we can do to stop puppy mills? Why does the government do so little to regulate puppy mills? The only way to STOP this is to have a greater punishment to animal cruelty. Put these horrible people in jail for the rest of their lives.
Thanks, Cesar, Chris and all of the LCA volunteers. Keep up the good work.
