A Message from A Man Among Wolves Shaun Ellis

Greetings. I first want to thank everyone for taking the time to write into the blog. I am very excited about the show on Monday night, and have spent the week in the US talking about it. 20/20 ran a great preview friday night - I hope you were able to see it - and of course the full documentary premieres Monday night at 9 on NGC.

There have been so many great comments and questions, I wish I could reply to each of you. But, there is one thing I want to address - and that has to do with my kids. I think it is important for people to know that while living with the wolves involved great sacrifice on my part and my family's part, my children continue to be and will always be an important part of my life. As I am sure any parent can relate too, you never stop loving your kids - even when you are not able to spend time with them. I do see them frequently, and they along with my fiancée Helen are very supportive of the work I do. Frankly, I couldn't do it without them. For me, the wolves are also my family, and I do love them too. I am so committed to the work that I do so that wolves will still be around in my children's future.

Thanks again for all of the great comments!

Best,

Shaun

Raw meat...hardcore...do you get sick often?

Shaun, as a grad student in biology (almost done!) and a future dog veterinary behaviorist, I greatly look forward to the program this evening. I'll be recording it (and probably re-watching it again and again!). Thanks for all the unique work you do to save my very favorite animal.

Shaun,
As a lover for all canine breeds and as a teacher, I am looking forward to watching your show tonight.
I was interested in trying to find some of your books, do you know where I can find them?

Hello Shaun, I'm very excited about the show and so pleased that folks are going to get a chance to see your important work. If only tortoises could howl, I'd have a better chance of understanding them! Love to you and Helen.

Johannah

Hi Shaun,
I can't woit until tonight to watch! I think it's facinating. By the way, I like rare meat too! Keep up the tremendous work!

Dear Shaun,
I am a poet, artist, dancer in Sarasota, Florida. What has that to do with wolves? I have a passion for getting to the bone of the matter (truth) and as my art and my life reflect my passion it grows into light and understanding of our relationship with all of nature but especially with wolves and dogs (our natural and first allies—-primitive man certainly knew the language of the wolves and took advantage of it.) Someone questioned if your project was a good way to “get information” about wolves, and I thought, its not about getting information--- its about communication---- there are other bright stars (souls) in the universe besides humans, but so few of us fail to see them. I feel a great tide rising of wonderful souls like yourself who are finding ways to bridge the communication (and spiritual) gap between humans and the other animals. I applaud you, I commend you, I honor you, I am enlightened by you, and I thank you for following your passion. In another life I could have been you. With people like you around I don’t feel half crazy.
Respectfully,
Scylla Liscombe (p.s. my relations came from Wiveliscombe)
& Misty Morningstar (sister dog)

Dear Shaun,

when my mother told me about this show and your work a week ago i just about fell out of my chair. this is what i have wanted to do all my life. i love wolves and i want to show people that they aren't just stupid animals and that there are ways that we can live with them that doesn't involve the use of guns. i hope that your research will begin the ball rolling for more and more understanding of these beautiful animals. you are an insperation to me to find a way to be able to participate in similar reseach. thank you for all that you are doing!

~ Jenn

Shaun. The sad fact is that whatever humans don't understand they usually kill. As a total animal lover I just want to say WAY TO GO. I bet the wolves love you too.

For in the end, we will save what we love, we will love what we understand, and we will understand what we are taught. The only problem I have with what you are doing is that the people that we really need to change the thinking of, are going to think you are an extremest and not pay any attention. This should not concern us animal lovers, but how else do we teach if we can't make it something they can relate too? I am a future elementary teacher so I really want to know an honest ansr..
Thanks, Rachelle

I saw a commercial for this show and I am so excited to watch this.I also want to tell you that I love wolves and I have many original oils of wolves. They are my most favorite animal. Wolves are a very important part of our world and people need to realize that. Not too long ago people killed these beautiful creatures for sport and nearly put them into extinction. It is a wonderful thing Shaun is doing. Keep up the good work! I look foward to watching this tonight.

Wow, quite a lovefest you have going on here Shaun.

Allow me to dissent.

Don't you think your work is a bit selfish? Perhaps you are learning a lot of scientific information about wolves, but what are they getting? A half-mother? Despite being the wolfiest man on the planet, you are after all, not a wolf. No person will ever be able to react with or sense the full range of what it is to be "wolf".

The Native Americans you mention have certainly been able to bond with and understand wolves without so deeply intruding as you.

I am glad you are able to use what you've learned (scents, sounds, etc.) to protect wolves in Poland. Sadly though this is just another example of modern science putting a bandaid on modern intrusions into wolf territory.

What you've done should be viewed as a one-time experiment, not to be expanded into a "technique" by which humans forever indulge in their insatiable quest for knowledge.

i think what your doing is really cool i am a huge fan of wolves so thanks for what your doing for the wolves

You are an amazing man. You have put so much on the line to not only prove that it's possible to teach wolves but also to learn and understand such magnificent creatures. I hope to see more of your work with wolves. And I can't wait to get A Man Among Wolves on dvd. This is something I'd be honored to have in my collection.
Goddess bless you always, Shaun.

I'm watching your show right now. It is amazing how you are so dedicated to your work. I think that you are extremely brave, bacause of the fact that the wolves could kill you. I can't believe your work. Thank so much for trying to help animals. You are doing GREAT!!! Keep up the good work! It's people like you who we need more of in the world!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!

Wow, im just amazed at all im watching. Me and my mom couldnt wait untill tonight to watch the show. Its shuch a good thing that your showing this on TV!!!

Shaun,

I'm sooooooo excited about watching your special tonight. I absolutely love wolves and think that what you're doing is very interesting and will benefit alot of people. I believe there is alot to be learned from ALL of creation and I give you HUGE props for stepping out!!!

Dear Shaun,

Thank you for Inspiring me! I have always been interested in wolves and have written researchers in hopes to join them in their study, whether my age or my education defers the researchers from responding I do not know. However I have not given up my own research and study of the animal I respect the most. Thank you for your inspiration, on that note I have another suggestion for the problem involving the polish farmer.

One suggestion- Use of wolf urine to mark boundaries as well as your idea of using recorded howls.

Another point to be made is that the wolves as you know target only the weak of their prey. Therefore eliminate the young old and sick of the herds during times when wolves are typically hunting. Thats probably already been done but the it never hurts to discuss ones thoughts.

Thank you again for listening,

I have seen your show "A man among wolves" I loved it. I am a wolf lover as well as a doglover. I am giving comments to support and protect the wolves to the defenders of wildlife. Good luck and I hope you do get a way to protect them(howling might be the key in protecting them) and maybe one day you will live with them in the wild.
My sister and I had a wolf shepherd and he use to howl but he was as tall as a great dane and had a coat like the wolves. We had him for 14yrs. Ever since I had him Ive been in love with wolves. Hopefully, everyone will find a better way for the wolves to live since humans are taking away alot of land of these beautiful creatures as well as other animals too!
Good luck to everyone and for what you are doing to protect the Wolves.

Shaun: Being priviledged enough to have two pure wolves mysef, I truly enjoyed your show. We have raised our wolves since they were 1 week and 3 weeks old. They truly are magnificant animals and we love them dearly.
And you are so right, they are not pets! They have their own home and we are honored enough to be able to visit them in their home. We have an extended family, me-grandma, my husband - grandpa - Our daughter - mom, our son-in-law - dad, my 11 year old grandson - brother. Our youngest grandchildren 6 and 2, do not go into the wolves home but interact with them from outside quite well. In fact, our wolves love to meet the visiting children through the fence. Keep up the good work.

Shaun,

Thank you for your inspiration.I have always wanted to research wolves first hand and have contacted other researchers, who; for whatever reason have failed to even acknowledge me. So again in this short note that you may never ever get I thank you!

A suggestion regarding the polish farmer with a wolf problem. Along with the use of recorded howls perhaps wolf urine could also be used to defer wolves from the property.

Just a thought.

Thank you again, you are truly inspiring!

Shaun & NGC
I was so impressed with the work that you do with this pack.
It is the unique and dedicated individuals like Shaun that can really make a difference in wolf preservation.
I believe this program could really change the way some people view wolves.
My question and hope is will there be more follow up programs?
I would love to see how this will evolve.

Hi, Shaun
I just finished watching the man among wolves national geogaphic special. First, may I commend you on your dedication and determination that you have for you love of these wonderful, beautiful creatures that only the native americans understand here in the U.S. Being an animal lover myself and have a little cairn terrier boy named Spencer, I love all animals but especially dear to my heart are the wolves. Here in Michigan, one can go to the Upper Peninsula and can hear the soulful howls of the wolves. It used to intrigue me, what did they mean. It was somehow comforting, to hear them on a warm summer night.
I do not understand the misunderstanding of your family, but the goes hand-in-hand it seems when one person's dedication is not important to others. Know that you have a family in the viewers that watch you and understand the love you have for what you are doing and you WILL make a difference, I just know it.
Thank you for showing us your world and explaining what the soulful howl means, now I know what the sound meant, all those years ago during vacations in the summer. Much love, Take care, Tammy in Michigan

I just got done watching the show, BRAVO!! It was great!
We have turned down wolves to add into our small pack of dogs for we feel a wolf is not a pet. Though we love wolves, we feel wolves need to be wild.
I just loved the show and your work I feel will help us dog owners out here to understand more our own dogs.
Thank you for giving up everything for your passion, you are unique and one to look up too!

From small town Oregon

Why do the parks not put live food (sheep, etc) within the wolfpack areas, like yellowstone so that the wolves do not go out to the ranches as much. It seems lack of resources is what drives them outside their area food.

I am a rancher but also a wolf lover.

Shaun,

I just finished wathcing your National Geographic special, Man Among Wolves One word quickly comes to mind...AMAZING!!!. I applaude you for the great sacrifice you made to leave one loving family for another . Your dedication and passion for your wolf family was quite apparent while viewing the show. I just wanted to let you know that you are very much appreciated for all that you do. I,too, am very passionate about wolves and feel a powerful, spiritual connection to them. I have been fortunate to photograph 4 wolf packs near my home and in so doing have developed a deep respect for these animals. I hope your show will allow people to see the "goodness" of wolves and how we can coexist together.

Thanks for all that you do and keep up the great work!!!

Sincerely,

Bob

Shaun,
I admire the work that you have done. You truly have great dedication. Ever since I was old enough to say the word wolves, I loved them. I'm 17 years old and my dream is to work with wolves as well. I want to help them and their population. They are beautiful and wise animals. Also, they are very spiritual. I went to a psychic a couple years ago, and right when she saw me she said, "your spirit animal is a wolf." That made me very happy. I was hoping that maybe you could give me some input on where and how I should go about starting my work. I live in Wisconsin. I would like to move to Ireland or England. That is also one of my dreams. Well, I hope you hear back from you. If I don't I wish you the best of luck with continuing your work with the wolves.

-Shaylah-

Hello again,
I couldn't just write one comment! :)
I just wanted to say a few more things. I went to a wildlife center up north, Wisconsin about 2 years ago. While I was there, I saw 2 white wolves and I watched them for hours. I just sat there on the bench. I felt an extreme spiritual connection with them as I watched. I would walk along the fence and they would follow me. They watched me with great curiosity and interest. I wish I could have gone in the enclosure with them. They looked sad and a bit too skinny. I just felt this energy from them of being trapped. I just wanted to let them out. Wolves do not belong in what seemed to be this small enclosure. It was almost as if I could feel what they were feeling. I cried for them. I don't know if you get feelings like that or not, but I would like to know. I've always had a strong connection with all animals. I had pet chickens. Raised one in my home until he got bigger. He felt like my child, and I'm sure when your with your wolves you feel that way too. I know I can never have a wolf as a pet, so thats why I would like to work with them and help them in the wild somehow. Well, I'll let you go. I'm sure you have plenty of work to do. Hope you hear from you.

I wish you the best !

Dear Shaun,

my name is Akasuki.
I very happy with your show, for I love wolves too. some times I think I am wolf. ahahah.
I have a husky that is part wolf. His name is Kiba. I want to train him like a wolf. To howl, to do all of the body language and other things wolves do. could you give me some tips. I can howl and do all of that. but I cant make him understand.

-Akasuki

dear shaun, we know that some people do not under-stand what you are doing. but as we know you're love for the wolve's is some thing much more than they can under stand. you keep doing as what you said, you teach them and they teach us. they are beautiful animal's. please add me to your fan club list. thank's for reading this. robin Earlywine

Dear Mr. Ellis,
I just finished watching your special documentary on National Geographic.
What you have done in living and communicating with the wolves is quite spectacular.
I am extreamly impressed. Thus,The reason that I am writing you.
I am hoping that there may be some hope in helping the Mexican Red Wolf here in Arizona, U.S.A.
They were reintroduced back into the wild in approximately 1996.
Of course there was a territorial duspute with the ranchers at the time and is still ongoing,Hence the problem.
In your segment tonight I was impressed when you used defensive howling recordings for a rancher to keep wolves from disturbing his cattle.
I realize that this is at a very early expermential stage, yet I was hoping that it could be proposed to be used here rather than harrassing the wolves for 15 minuet prior to shooting them with the governments blessing.
I have the origional "Draft of the Enviromental Impact Statement" that I would be more than willing to send to you so that you can see how the law was outlined. I would be more than willing to assist in gathering any further data necessary.
I don't know how if our state legislature will except any help with the fued with the ranchers vs. wolves. But if they are open to discussion will you please give this some consideration.
I do know that your time is very valuable as you continue with your wolf pack and your family. I just ask that you please give this some consideration, I do not want to see this sub- species erradicated. Most sincerely and with great respect,
-Boni

Shaun,
I am very interested with what nation did the Native American Indian source come from? My Grandfather was named Wolf & he was a
Northern Cheyenne. Grandfather Wolf was a Holy Man a Medicine man hopefully you will see why I am asking you to open up your resource???
Thank you for your time, Judy Kovar

Dear Shaun:

I watched your show tonight, and I was completely blown away! Keep up the good work! I was especially interested in your studies regarding wolf howl recordings to deter wolves from killing livestock. We have a farm here in Northwest Wisconsin that has suffered losses, and the owners have been active in getting the wolf removed from the endangered species list here. It would be nice to be able to show these people an alternative path. I'm also interested in reading your books, but I'm not sure where to find them.

Shaun and Bernard,
I greatly enjoyed your film and I was glad to see someone trying to come up with alternatives to killing to save these beautful creatures.

I am working on a film project of my own for a college course I am taking and if your time allows could use some advice.

My project is on the aerial wolf hunts. If you have any more alternative suggestions as to why killing from the air isn't the way to solve problems, I sure could use the imput. Also, suggestions to how to present this that won't turn off the audience.

Thank you

Dear "One with Wolves"

I commend you for your work! When I first heard of this show, I made sure no matter where I was, that this show would be taped to make sure I viewed it. I stayed up to watch it tonight. It brought tears to my eyes; especially the part where you were howling with the pups. I feared for you when you had left and returned back to the pack, and at the same time, I had no fear at all... It took real guts for you to walk back in the den. The work you are doing is SO IMPORTANT for SO MANY REASONS. Thank you for bringing even more attention to the Wolf and may you continue to walk the path of "Oneness" with Wolf. There is a Wolf Refugee here in New Mexico. If you ever get to these parts, I am sure we could arrange a lecture as the people in Santa Fe support efforts such as yours.

Blessings - Skye

Hi Shawn! I'm sure you're aware of the aerial wolf shootings in Alaska.

I've signed several petitions to stop the hunt, but so far they're not listening. Senator Ted Stevens is a notorious anti-environmental wingnut, and he's all for it.

Is there anything else we can do to stop this horribly cruel practice?

Sincerely,

Eileen Flanagan

Shaun,
First of all I just want to say that I admire your complete dedication in this whole "study"! I can fully appreciate your intentions, as a wolf lover myself , it has ALWAYS been my belief that we can live in harmony with these amazingly intelligent and majestic animals. I believe you just may have found the answer, concerning the farmers livestock losses, while protecting the declination of our wolf population.I want to say that I think you are brilliant, patient,VERY MUCH dedicated in your work and belief in these experimentations of this very misunderstood animal!Your immense love for these wolves proves much. I commend you and wish it were me right alongside!!! I absolutely love wolves and have studied them, a bit, along with a bit of native American beliefs, as well.BEST wishes to you and your lucky fiancee and children..... Absolutely brilliant!!!!!! Peace

Shaun's work is amazing and compelling. As a nature writer I am delighted to see this on television in the US.

I did blog on this on my WriterByNature.com website.

I am grateful for the additional information on the National Geographic site.

Shaun, thanks for all you do to help us understand and respect wolves. Thanks for sharing this information with the world.

Hello Shaun
I admire the work that you have done. You truly have great dedication. I love wolves and all animals
Sincerly Christine Hill from PA

Dear Shaun,

Please come visit the wolves at our Preserve in Northern New Jersey. You will truly appreciate the amazing place it is. The only wolves in NJ in 100 years. Go to Lakotawolf.com and see the website. Please know I understand what you have accomplished and admire you greatly.

Niki Richardson

Shaun - All I can say is WOW. I am so glad God has blessed us all with your unselfish love for these magnificant creatures. Teaching the pups to howl was very touching.

Dear Shaun,
Being an ardent supporter of wolf and wildlife preservation I was fascinated to see you interact with your wolf family. I was fortunate enough to be kissed by a wolf during a wolf seminar once. In no way could this seminar compare to what you do, but I did learn in those moments (never mind what you read about in books), how truly extrordinary these animals are and how equally great a lack of understanding many people have of them. I am heartened that through your work ultimately wolves will be less endangered and more understood and respected. They have a huge job in the wild keeping our eco systems healthy. People need all the education they can get.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and your wolves close up and personal. It's just so fantastic!
We will all be looking forward to any future works and scientific results of your work in the future. I am so grateful for you and your work. Thank you and your pack, and National Geograhpic for airing the program.

Wishing you all the best and future sucess!

Sincerely,
Nancy T.

SHAUN,

Shaun,

We are students in a Life Connections class at South Lafourche High School in southern Louisiana. We were able to watch your show in class. It is very interesting. We like it.

Sincerely,

Students in the 4th hour life connections class.

Hi Shaun,
I just got done watching the show which got recorded last night for me. I LOVED the show, I LOVE wolves and always wanted to see if someone could live within a wolf pack and prove that they arn't bad animals and that humans can live with wolves and not need to kill them. Just thought i would let you know. Keep up the good work, and I hope the show keeps going because I already want to see the next one.

Krystle

Shaun,

I was floored when I saw your show. You are doing something that I've always wanted to do with big cats that live in prides. I'm studying to become a Vet Tech and an animal keeper, and I really would love being a specialist in any of these areas and you have proved to me that my dreams can come true. That I can actually be that close, be ONE of them while I am studying them. Thank you for your show!

Sincerely,
Jessica Thomas

I finally watched the show and laughed and cried. The absolute best part was when you were teaching them to howl. All of sudden I heard this other howl, hit the pause on my TIVO and my Rottie had found his own wolf roots and was howling along with the TV. I was just stunned and then laughed and then cried and then unpaused and let everybody howl. It was a great moment.

Shaun,

My name is Joey and I am 9 years old. I watched your show last night and I thought it was amazing. I have loved wolves for a long time and have many books about them. I always wonder what it is like to be so close to a wolf. I know your work will help us understand wolves better. I learned so much from your show. Keep up the good work.

Your friend
Joey

I just wanted you to know that I saw your show and loved it! I have always been an animal lover since childhood. Animals are just as important as people and I'm glad you are getting a message out there. I was hoping to find a list of your books, but I haven't been able to find them. That might be a good thing to add to your bio...

Shaun, the first thing I'd like to say is please keep up the good work! I know that many people will say very unplesant things about your work, scientists and others as well, but those types of things usually accompany the beginings of great works. Personally, I have always felt a connection with wolves and I'm glad to see that you have chosen to do what you do, to give up certain things for the advancement of another. Although I could never make that choice myself, I admire your passion and dedication to our friends, The Wolves.

Hello Shaun!!

I want to say i watched your discovery channel thing and i was in like man i wish i could do that really because i have alway thought about wolves as a awesome animals powerful and etc. I wish i could know you because you have showed me on that show so much. I am glad someone is looking out for them because they are beautiful animals and they are just GOD's awesome animals as in like the lion too. But wolves the whole pack does something. Well i hope and pray you and your wolves are good and i hope that the wolves you helped at that farm area are still good. May GOD be with you Shaun and thanks again for all the info.
Your friend in the USA,
April

Shaun,
I saw youre documentry last night. I was completely amazed!!! You have shown a side of the Wolf that I have never seen before. I am interested in learning more...Especially photos of Wolves in the wild. Any ideas? Thank you again i look forward to purchasing the DVd. Thanks
Mike A

Mr. Shaun,
I am a huge fan of wolves, and when I heard of your show last night, I had to watch it. I am interested in living with wolves when I am older, like you are, but I don't know how to get started. Thank you for working in this area, when most people would dismiss it as a crazy venture.

By the way, how did you adapt to raw meat when you were not the alpha anymore, and couldn't cook or eat the liver?

Shaun,

I have been looking forward to watching your program for a while and I finally was able to watch it this morning.

I was very excited when I first saw the preview commercial on NGC. I've had dogs my entire life and in dealing with them I often resorted to the growling and bearing of the teeth when they would beg for food or try to dominate me. I found this to be very effective in showing them that I was the pack leader. This goes along with how much I enjoy the Dog Whisperer program in which he advises that people need to be the pack leader.

I love the importance of howling you have found with your pack. Howling with my dogs is a favorite activity of mine as well. I knew that howling was their form of long distance communication but I did not realize that there were specific howls to call the pack together.

When you have your scientific backing it would be interesting to see if domesticated dogs could learn and respond to the various howls. It would be great if people could learn the recall howl, teach it to their pack and just stand out in their front yard and howl for a lost dog to come home.

You, sir, have found the reason you were put on this earth. Keep up your fabulous work.

You should put up a wikipedia article about you and post on youtube.com. I'd like to keep up with what you're doing.

Hi again,
I have noticed that a few people have mentioned wanting to learn more or get involved. In my quest to do my own documentary I have meet another amazing person like Shaun who works with the wolves that needs help. Her name is Tonya Littlewolf. She is the Founder of Wolf Mountain Sanctuary. If anyone is interested checkout her site www.wolfmountain.com

Dear Shaun:
I am very interested in your work and I send my bestest wishes to you and the pack that many wolves are able to be released into the wild. I also hope that by the time I have children the Canis Lupus will still run free in the open wild, protected; and not behind iron cages under human survalliance.
I am a university student in Rhode island, and I was wondering if their are any simularities in the behavior and communication between wolves and coyotes.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could get back to me. I understand that your work is very important for the future of these animals, and also that your family comes and a top priority as well. It would mean a lot to have your feedback though.
Thank you so much for your research and the best of luck for you future and the future of your entire family.

Sincerely,
Rachael

Hey Shaun,
Great Show! You should make it a series...it would be really successful. Good Luck to you!

Dear Shaun,
WOW!!!!!! THANK YOU & the Nat. Geo Channel for giving us an experince of a lifetime! I'm a school librarian and, rest
assured, all my "cubs" will be using this website to continue the thrill and enrichment of what we saw on the show.
The most popular non-fiction book in our school library, among over 500 students, is the book on dog breeds so it follows that many of them list wolves as their favorite wild animal. We thank you for all you are doing to protect these magnificent creatures.
God bless and sustain you in your work. A grateful school libraian

Calamay and I both thank you for what you are doing for our family. We howl your success, me and everyone in my pack. Although, I must say I was very pleased to learn that you were beaten from alpha male status. In a wolf pack, It should be a wolf who leads. I wish I could meet you and your pack, but I must tend my own for a few years yet. Much love is passed from my pack to your's...May you get your wish to live with them in the wild.

May Calamay, Wolf Goddess of the Light Moon, Protect, and bless your pack and your Future.

As High Priestess of Athlan, and Priestess of Calamay, I bless thee in thy learnings and wish thee happy journeys.

As fellow wolf, Keep in touch.

I think I love you!!!! I love everything and everyone that have to do with wolves...but you take the cake. My sister howls hello again. anywho...good luck with life.

Shaun,

It is amazing that you should be doing this. When I was about 9 years old, I had the idea to do the very same thing that you are now doing. It has always been a goal of mine. I have felt lost for opportunity, not knowing where to begin etc., and I began to feel guilty for not being able to do this, but you are doing it, and I think it's great! Now I don't feel so terrible for not being able to do this myself.
You are giving the wolf-loving community hope, and that's splendid.
In these desperate times, we really need activists like you. Keep up the good work!

Dear Shaun

After having to watch your show on the National Geographic Channel, I must admit that your research on wolf howling just totally blew me away. I LOVED EVERY SINGLE SECOND of YOUR SHOW. Simply amazing. I am currently a collage student at the American University of Kuwait AUK (hopefully I'll be graduating with PR/Advertising major along with graphic design as a minor) and I just wanted to say that you have done one of the most outstanding research on wolves in a long time. Wolves are my favorite animals; I've read a lot about them, their behaviors and how much they are closely related to our own human behavior when we are either with the family or at work :). Further more, I think you have probably unlocked the secrets of wolves through vocal communication.

However I have couple of question. Is it possible for us to tell the different types of howl that the wolf releases from long distance whether it is signaling "To stay of its territory" or "To indicate that they are heading your way" or whatever howl they release? If so how can we communicate back? Lastly, since you’re an expert on wolf behavior, do the behavior of wolves and wolf-hybrid dogs differ from each other? Thanks and keep up the great work.

Shaun, I'm not one of these fortunate person who saw the show, for I'm in Brazil. But I'm pleased anyway that you do such an important work as to help human fellows understand wolves. The Planet is theirs too.
Thanks.
Regards

If someone can email me the names of the wolves in Ellis' pack, It would be much kind and many lives thanks.

Dear Shaun,
Do you still live with the wolves? I am 7 years old and liked your program very much. I was very interesed in why you eat the liver.

Hello Shaun...
I am a professional audiologist and field recordist. I am currently involved in creating sound design for a National Geeographic project.

I think that your experiments and theories regarding wolf howl recordings are very sound.
I also have a background in a Native American apprenticeship, and I believe that I may possibly have some alternative insights into how you may be able to improve on this vein of your research.

I would be happy to share these thoughts with you, In the spirit of helping with this issue If I can.

Ron Sunsinger

Shaun,
You seem like a pretty open-minded person. I'm curious if you ever had a Sasquatch return one of your howls? Have you ever heard howls that were not from a wolf or coyote? My hobby is Bigfoot and our group is trying to understand the reasons for their howls. There are several recordings.

i watched your show and i was moved by the work you are trying to do. i am going to school to be a wild life biologist and hope to work with the mexican wolf in my area. i love these animals and want to help them make a come-back in new mexico. i admire the work that you do and hope that one day i can show people that these animals deserve our help and that they will see the wolf through my eyes, as loveing majestic and unbelievable animals. sincery Eleasia Coombs

A very inspiring and admirable work you have done. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Paul

Hi
You are The Best!!!
Bye

What were the long term results of the rancher that was using your recorded howls to protect his cattle? Have you tried this with any ranchers in Wyoming or Montana? I'd sure like to find out if this is working.
Thanks

Shaun,
I am raising a five week Grey Wolf pup with a 13 year old male wolf dog. I was wondering if you could send me a sample of the different howls? The pup would really appreciate it and I would like to know what they are talking about. Keep up the excellent work. I hope to see a sequel .

Chris

Loved your programme and wondered if you would contact me. I had a dog from a puppy approx. 6 weeks of age in Spain during the early 70's and he was at least 3 parts wolf and the vet reckoned a little bit of a lab or some dog like that. It was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. I had him with me for 16 years. The most clever dog I have ever come across. Really scared everyone when he howled until they got used to him.
Thanks for the wonderful work you are doing.

Dear Shaun, i see the show tonight on channel 5 and thought to myself this guy is great you put your life on the line.. for two things.. something you love and also something that you know will help farmers ie the one in poland.. please carry on doing this stuff.. and if another show comes out i will DEFINATELY BE TUNED In!!Please try and get back to me on dusta_duin_dis@hotmail.co.uk thank you, and keep up the absaloutely brilliant work.. paul hardcastle age 16 london

Just to say I am a child and have only just heard and watched your programme but adored it! I would like to say that what you are doing is amazing. Animals are needed to make the world go round espiecally wolves, to keep deer population down and so on. I am wolf lover and own three dogs. Don't take notice to the people who say what you're doing is wrong. The wolves you adopted, you gave them another chance to be a wolf even though they are not wanted by all. Keep it up and i'll be able to do it some day! P.S If I meet you I have to teach you how to run on you hands and feet like a wolf and like me! From Ella

Dear Shaun,

Your programme last night on Channel 5 was absolutely beautiful and spellbinding. I ve been rescuing Wildlife for 21 years and run a Sanctuary from my home. At present I have 26 "Wildlife patients" in my care as well as 45 domestic pets so life is always busy! I am glad you found someone who was willing to share your passion with you, it can be a pretty lonely and thankless task sometimes. When I watched your programme I wished it had been at least another 2 hours longer! I think you were an absolute Saviour regarding those wolves and it was certainly an education. Those negative comments previously written by other people are only said because they are jealous and wished they had thought of the idea first or been in your shoes! If someone puts you down its because they resent what you have and envy you. People can be dreadful as I have found!! When I have rescued animals I have sometimes been crititised for it! (like catching seriously ill feral cats to get them veterinary treatement)The mentality of people is unbelievable!Anyway sorry this is long, I wish you a very happy life with Helen and your lovely wolves. Best wishes Beth

i was doing a project on you for english. then i found this blog, wow!!!!! what a find, my dream is to do what you are doing now, its a shame im only 11!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!well il lie and wait and hope il live like you one day. your my hero cause you dont care about the camera, only for your practicaly wild wolves

well i had to do a project on my hero and i have decided that anyone as dedicated to wolves as you is definitly my hero. have you ever heard of wolfs rain, its a 15 anime about wolves and its great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
im gonna follow in your footsteps and become a wolf behaviorist if i have the chance!!! well its great to know u have a blog!!!

c ya mate!!!

wolfy hardcore!!!!

Let me be the first to give some negative feedback on your documentary.
First of all, after watching "A Man among Wolves" I cancelled my subscription to National Geographic and will never support the society again.
Your show had all the qualities of a Monty Python skit. At least we got a good laugh out of it.
I understand the need to preserve and conserve, but your obsession with these animals and wanting to be just like a wolf is almost obscene.
I would never forgive my father if he left me for a bunch of wild animals. There are millions of human beings in this world that you and your children could be channeling your energy and time on. You are not a wolf, Mr. Ellis. You are a man. Start acting like one.

i just love your show and i just fell in love with wolves ever since i was a little girl. and it hurts me to see how people can just hurt them. we are ditroying there invoroment and that needs to stop.and i want to become a wolf biologist to save our wolves

saun tell me how you started doing wonders with wolves?
i too love them i'm awed by their beauty, strenghtlove of life, their pups remind me how i played in our whelping box when we had 2 litters of spaniels!

the 2 my parents own now are terriers! dusty, willow!

I am happy to read all this succes: you deserve it completely. Proud to work with you in Boston, next june. Please, take all the good thoughts streaming from my heart to you...

i wish i coul dmeet you, just to talk about your dedication to one of the worlds dying species. but what is most important to me is how you manage to do it, and the effect it would have on people in generations to come. i hope to live out your intentions, one day, and maybe learn something from you!

All the best! first time viewer of the show!

Hello Shaun. I just wanted to say that you're a good person. Not to be a suck-up or anything, but I really appreciate you doing what you do. I am fascinated by wolves, and I hope that maybe I can do something similar to what you do someday. Maybe not LIVING with wolves, but at least helping them. Saving them.

Keep up the good work. ;)

Hi Shawn,
Well, just to tell you that last night I could watch your program at Natgeo... ESPECTACULAR!!!. My admiration to you, for being what you want to be. My respects to those sweet and powerful wolves.

Dear Shaun Ellis,
You are a brilliant man! Your philosophy in studying wolves is a marvolous yet risky task that give you my upmost respect. I hope everything goes well with the wolf recorings with the Polish farmers, because maybe that will replace the option of having wolf hunting legel again here in America.I bid you good luck with your research, theories, and those wolves you've raised!

Your admirer,
Chelsea

I've always had a close bond with animals, expecially with large dogs. When a stray dog had puppies under our house I was extreamly exited. I sat and watched for hours a day, learning what each yip and whine ment. I watched their body language and after some time, mimicked the sounds and motions until the mother finnally axcepted me. After only days she trusted me enough to take care of the pups while she went off to eat and drink. I watched how she taught them the rules of being a dog, so I mimicked them and soon I understood what it ment to be a canine. From then on I decided I wanted to work with dogs, but I found it confusing how domestic dogs entertwine the rules and bodylanguage of dogs and humanes. I decided that I'd much rather work with feril dogs, what I really want to do is work with wolves. I find there communication with each other, rules, and diclipline fasinating.
If it wouldn't be to much trouble I would like your opinion on what my next step should be...what collage, feild of study, ext...

People PLEASE PLEASE be very careful what ideas you take away from this show. As someone who has worked for years with captive wolves and am passionate about conservation of wolves in the wild I ask you to compare Shaun's assertions with the surfeit of good scientific studies that abound on the WWweb. Some of his ideas are based on accepted fact, unfortunately a lot of his ideas are based on his own interpretations for whatever reason, and are not backed by serious scientific study, where are the controls that would prove his assertions? Shaun is NOT, as Bernard would have you believe, regarded with awe and respect in serious Wolf conservation circles. In the UK he is in fact regarded with both amusement, and a great deal of worry. I am surprised that The Nat Geo channel should have put this programme on the air and presented it as serious scientific study, but then, it makes good viewing figures. We have a lot to learn about this magnificent animal, for years man has simply destroyed without learning anything, Shaun Ellis's approach however is not a valid learning tool.

Here is just one official comment from a respected Conservation society that has spent a lot of years and a lot of money raising awareness and funding wolf related projects in Europe:

"Following recent programmes on Five and National Geographic, relating to a specific pack of captive wolves, we'd like to clarify our position.

The programmes contained (in our view) several misconceptions, which are addressed below.

Firstly, wolves have a lot of innate behaviours. They learn during puppyhood how to be a wolf, from a mixture of observation and experimentation via play. We have observed our own wolves learn hunting techniques without ever having been "taught" by a human. Thus, we reject the programme's assertion that it's necessary to teach young wolves how to be a wolf: they manage just fine on their own. Similarly wolves don't need to be taught how to eat, after a few practice sessions pups will work things out for themselves.

The second problem is one's relationship with a pack of wolves. Captive, socialised wolves have no fear of humans, unlike their wild brethren. This can potentially lead to problems if you become careless when interacting with them. The programmes featured a handler who had started off as an "alpha", then took a leave of absence. Although much depends on the wolves involved, to come back and appear as an "omega" is highly dangerous. During the summer months wolves are generally quiescent, but when hormones rise during the breeding season the omega often bears the brunt of pack tension. Wolves will use a variety of signals and postures to prevent conflict - and as wolves are not humans, a human attempting the same thing is more likely to give off the wrong signals or incorrectly interpret signals being given.

This leads to our primary concern, which is, should the handler featured in the programmes have misjudged his animals or his approach to them, he is at risk of a serious attack. Such an attack would have a disastrous effect on the work of conservation groups in the UK, as undoubtedly the media would tar us with the same brush despite our differing working practices"

XD Rare steak rox my sox!!!! ok, i want one of those hybrid wolves for a pet, but i have know clue if its a good idea. some ppl tell me there awsome, yet ive heard some stories about them attacking their masters....what would u advise???

sorry, NO, not know....hehehe...

dear shaun,
if your wolf pack ripped the stiches out, licked the wounds, and it healed faster, couldn't doctors just bottle up the salivia and instead of spending so much money on stiches and stuff, just make it a perscription???

Dear Shaun,
I may be young But I love the things you do. I wish I too could live with the wolves, but I don't know how you gained their trust. I wish you good luck with your work and am very happy to see something like this. As a Lover of all things canine, I hope you stay cool and smart.
Thanks for listening.

Mr. Ellis, I first recorded your show way back in April when it was on, and have since watched it many times. I love the whole concept of what you are doing, and am extremely hopeful that your work comes to fruition. What I would really like to know is, in the time since you made the special and it first aired, how much more progress has been made with your ideas, and have you since found a spot to relocate your "pack" in the US? I, for one, would really love an update. Thanks you for ALL you do with these beautiful creatures. I am a HUGE wolf lover, and have even passed this trait down to my 7 year old granddaughter, who before she could even say the word "wolf", would howl when trying to identify one. It was adorable! Anyway, please keep us all up to date? And, good luck, and God Bless!

I was amazed by the program on NGC, so much so that me and my freind based our holliday around visiting the Combe Martin Wildlife and dinosaur park to see the work up close and we were not dissapointed. The best holliday i have had in years!

Anyone else wanting to visit the Park should check out the link above. A visit would surpass your expextations.

Mr Ellis I have always wanted to have a wolf as a pet. I am 23 years old and live in Southern California with my dad and I have always had cats and German Shepherd but finally got a chance to get my first wolf pup in January 2007. I learned a lot how to raise him by watching what you did. He is now almost a year and hasn't shown any agression toward anobody. The films you did were amazing, thanks for your help and dedication.

Just so u know u are my new hero just becose of how u sacraficed all the things that mattered to u to live with these amazing wolfes. i love wolves 2 of my dogs r actualy half wolf and my dream is also to live with wolves even if it means haveing to sacrafice what is close to me. iv watched your show about 50 billion times but im still trying to perfect my howls. i may only be 15 and people may say i dont know what i want yet but one thing i do know is that i love all wildlife and demesticated animals and no matter how my life turns out i do know i want to help wildlife.

love your show
ariel

I will be glad if such programmes do convince people that it is cool to protect wild animals (even predators). But I unfortunately think that the only result may be the rising popularity of wolfdog hybrids, which is no good. So, please people, especialy when you love wolves don't make them live in captivity, rather help them to be free and wild (and safe).
If you have a special bond with wolves there is a lots of dogs (TRUE dogs which are easier to train and live with) that really reminds wolves eg. Saarloos or Ceskoslovencky vilcak. But having them is still much more challeging than other dogs.

Going back to wolves. The wild life is spreading :) There is a confirmed information that near the city in central Poland in which I live the pack of 4 of 5 wolfes has settled down. It's quite a big suprise. After the breading season the youn ones joined the pack. Now is 6-8, and that gives hope that some will move to the north. The pack is generally safe because not many are aware of their presence.

I wrote too long text. Sorry :)
And don't bully me because of the mistakes. I'm Pole and I guess your Polish is even worse

Hi Shaun

Your show has inspired me like no other before, i've been interacting (or at least trying to) with animals all my life, especialy my dog, i've always thought i had a special connection with "Canaines" and now after your show i realized i acctualy might be on to something. I saw a reflection of me in you and that has struck me profoundly. I will definately nurrish my connection with animals even more nowdays, and will do what i can to spread the word of reason about wolves in my country, so that people might understand them at least 1% as well as you do.

greetings from Slovenia.

Shaun,
I think me and you would get along great! we could sit and howl together. I think waht you're doing with the wolves is great.I've decided, as a career, I'll help pretect and perserve the last remaining wolves. To teach people about them. I feel so close to you, and I understand the love you have for the wolves. When I was young I wanted to either live with the wolves, or have a wolf as a friend. Keep on doing what you're doing!

Hey.
I recently went on a holiday to Devon, and dragged my parents down to the Wildlife and Dinosaur park there. Being a wolf lover myself, I ONLY wanted to go see the wolves. Then I heard about you, and I was really intrigued about you and your work. We came down on the day the BBC were filming, and I saw you. You were busy on your phone though, but I wanted to talk. =( But it was still amazing to see you in person. It made my day really. <3
I know you probably get this ALL the time, but
I just want to say, that I think you and your work and AMAZING and I'm looking forward your work in the future. I wish you the best of luck with everything that you do.
Peace and love
<33

Dear Shaun,
I am a huge fan of your show sadly I havent watched for about a year now. Why? Because I can't rmember when it's on! So can you help me figure out the time our show is on in Rialto, area code:92376 cause that's where I live, and I realy want to start watching it again. :)

Please Help! :(

Your Biggest Fan,
Jeorgia Rock ;)

We have watched your documentry 'Wolfman' on channel 5 in the U.K and felt very moved and educated on your dedication to pack life. We have an Alaskan Malamute at the age of 18 months and he shows signs of being a dominant male but comes in 2nd rank to my husband and myself. I believe that wolf and malamute are closely related and some of your techniques we have actually had to adminster long ago. Such things as the biting on the ear and muzzle and to express a dominant nature to take our place in the Alpha role. After watcing your documentry we are thinking of expanding our pack but have the worries of pecking order. Our worries have been put at ease knowing a little of what to expect by bringing in a less dominant or an equal male. Please if you could enlighten us on any information as to what to expect or how to bring in a new pack member; your adivse would be much appreciated. I have a question for you or anyone who is reading this. Do you think Malamutes and wolves have the same mentality to pecking orders and discpline in rank? Keep up the good and infromative work.

Yours sincerly,

Dear Shaun Ellis,
I have always been facinated by wolves and wanted to learn more about them.
I have just recently come in possesion of your book Spirit of the Wolf. I have learned a great deal about you and your work, but I always say that the best way to learn about a subject is to hear it from the person who is an expert in the field.

I wish to hear from you in the future. You can contact me at arch_angel_alpha1@yahoo.com

I used to work with wolves as well and experienced some of the same things you did. We used to ask the wolves to lick our cuts and scrapes, for example, because we knew they would heal faster. It works!

I'm happy to see any kind of work publicized that detracts from the myth of the wolf as a vicious killer. They're wonderful, intelligent, loving animals. They have their own society and rules and it's been my experience that playing by their rules, as you do, allows one to have a close relationship with them.

Your idea of using wolf howls to keep wolves away is brilliant. Again, it's playing by their rules, which gives it the best chance to work. That's the thing that needs to be remembered - we can't expect them to speak our language; we must learn to speak theirs.

Hello Shaun,
I love what you do and i wish you a new year with full of success in your research in this year.

I found out about this video on the internet and i just bought the DVD.

much love, all the way from Toronto.
Cheers.

I am new to protecting livestock and loved the method in which you used on the Show in Poland. I want to purchase a cd like the one you used. Do you know where i can purchase such a cd? I too also love wolves and want to try any other option than guns to solve my problem. Thank You and God be with you.

Shaun, i hace on question for you...can you teach me? Can i be ur student? Can i work with you? I think you have a sense that most others dont have when it comes to wolves...

Hello from the Carpathian Mountains.

For the last 11 years I've been researching wolves, wolf diet and wolf-human conflicts in Slovakia, which shares the same population of wolves as Poland, where Shaun has done some of his work (see www.slovakwildlife.org).

At the end of last year I was in Poland to attend an expert seminar on the conservation and management of wolves and other carnivores in the Carpathian Mountains. I asked Polish wolf researchers if they knew about Shaun's work. These are professional people whose full-time work is studying wolves in the wild in Poland: their territorial behaviour, when and why they howl, how to protect livestock from predators. I was surprised to find that they had never heard of Shaun Ellis.

I described Shaun's work to them. In their opinion, playing recordings of wolf howls is likely to attract wolves, not repel them, as Shaun has claimed. The explanation they gave is that resident wolves would be anxious to defend their territory from intruders and so would tend to approach the source of any howling they heard coming from within their territory. The researchers I spoke to have personal experience of this from their own work in playing recorded howling. I'd be interested to hear how Shaun responds to their opinion.

Apologies for the long post.

Hello,
thanks to youtube.com I have seen the trailer for A Man Among Wolves. Unfortunately, in my country (Czech Republic) this show is not known and that´s why most Czech people don´t know your name and what you do for wolves. But I wish you lots of experiences with these beautiful animals and good luck.
I´m sorry for possible mistakes.
PS: I must buy your DVD:-)

Shaun,
Thanks to You Tube i was able to watch your whole show! I saw the adds on TV last year and thought it only came on once...for some reason. So i went ahead typed it up on You Tube and i was able to watche the whole thing! Thanks alat for the things you do to save the best animal in the world! I hop as I grow up i will inquire more information on wolves!

I caught the documentary just now on NatGeo. Amazing work- I am envious of your hard work and achievements. I read "Julie of the Wolves" many times as a child, and have always admired and been fascinated by wolves. Your efforts are remarkable, and I enjoyed watching evidence that a human can indeed become a pack member. Congratulations and good luck in the future.

My grandson and I watched your documentary and we love the wolves more then ever now and we love you for your accomplishments...we know you love your family just from watching what you are doing now....keep believing in what you are doing and you will be fine...we hope we can continue to write you....

Dear Shaun,
I have a story to share. about 8 years back, I was at the houston zoo, and the last exhibit I went to was the mexican wolf. A female wolf started walking up to the fence, and we looked at eachother for a couple of minutes, I was knelt to her level, then took a picture of her, then she stayed there, still looking at me, so we looked at eachother even more after I took the picture of her. Growing up, I have always been a huge fan of wolves, I see them as path takers, and close to family, like me. I must say, I admire you for what you have been able to do, and wish I was doing the same. That would be an invigerating experience.

hello shawn !

i'am french canadian and i saw on youtube some sequences of your adventures with wolves ,the wolves are so mysterious and fantastics i'm working in the north at Baie James and i try to observe wolves but it's not easy ,i try to get near of them without succes,i want to buy your movie but i don't know how ,do you can give me the references for calling it.if it's impossible i want to say you thank you for them and continue to do your nice work with the king of the forest THE WOLVES

Tank's PIERRE

p.s excuse my novice english!!!

SHAUN,

YOUR A VERY GIFTED MAN AND IT SHOWES IN YOUR WORK!! FOR MANY OF US WHO ARE VERY PROUD OF WHAT YOU HAVE DONE AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO WE SAY THANK YOU AND PLEASE KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK! I AM A K-9 OFFICER AND SPEND A GREAT AMOUNT OF TIME WITH MY PARTNER AT WORK AND AT HOME AND I KNOW HOW VERY ATTACHED YOU GET TO THEM!! I UNDERSTAND YOU PASSION AND I WISH YOU GREAT SUCCESS!! BE SAFE BUDDY!

I was just wanting to know what kind of emotional and behavel problems would a male mexican grey wolf have if he didnt have a alfa female of his own. I know he isn't a full blood wolf, I believe he has some huskey in him. I have confirm the wolf in him though. He seems to want my dogs to be his pack, and he believes that my female is his alfa female, but if my female dog is not around him, he seems to become very depress. He stops eanting, he lays around and he crys. I have come to learn the difference between his cry and his howls. Trust me there is a BIG difference between the two! He is very friendly and will even let my kids play all over him, I believe that he might have been a pet at one time. The only thing that realy makes him wild is he hunts on his own, he wont come around when there is new people around and he will not come into my house. Is there anything I can do for him? The only time I keep my female and him apart, is when my female comes into heat. He becomes so sade I almost want to put her back out side to be with him. I think my dog becomes depress as well it is almost as if they are soul mates. If my germen shepard breed what kind of dogs will the pups be like.

Hi Shaun!,

I've always wanted to grow up and do something like what you're doing! It's nice to see that there are people as dedicated to really helping and -understanding- animals as I hope to be in this world. Now I don't feel so crazy! I'm currently writing a paper about your wolf calling stragedy to keep wolves off of farmer's land for a Human Ecology course. I was hoping to find some follow up information on the success rate of this method. If by any chance you read this, please get back to me on it. I'd be really grateful and so would my G.P.A.!

Keep up keepin' up!
Stephanie
