Best of NGC Week: Friday
Last night, Best of NGC Week displayed the mysteries and beauty that make up our earth. Friday night brings you inside three seperate African Tribes, The Dinka, The Hamar, and The Wodaabe. All three have distinct differences and all three are full of rich cultural traditions.
8p Tribal Secrets: "The Dinka"
The Dinka live deep in southern Sudan, the largest country in Africa. NGC takes viewers to this remote landscape of Africa to show us customs and traditions at the very heart of their cattle-centric culture, including showering under urinating cows.
9p Tribal Secrets: "The Hamar"
The Hamar live among the bush covered hills of southern Ethiopia. NGC takes viewers to this remote land to show us two life-changing challenges at the very heart of their culture--a rite of passage to manhood and putting a father's uneasy spirit to rest.
10p Tribal Secrets:"The Wodaabe"
The area where the Sahara meets the southern grasslands of West Africa is home to the Wodaabe. They are a nomadic tribe numbering perhaps 65,000 in Niger and are among the last Nomads remaining in Africa.

Re: Eaten Alive June 29, 2007
11:00 AM
At 11:15 this morning I put on NGTV to find lions eating something in the jungle. Seconds later I realize it is a baby elephant who is still alive. No I didn't check to see what show was on. I expected NGTV to be smart enough to not schedule that type of programming during the day. I now have to explain why Dumbo was being eaten alive by lions. Are your kidding me?!!! Who does your scheduling?!!! During the day when school is out, NGTV should should be selective as to what is shows on its channel. Yes, children should have a better understanding of the wildlife that lives on this planet, but a show like that should be shown only for adults. A program like Eaten Alive should be shown in the evening when children are in bed, not during the day. What were you thinking?!!!
Catherine-
You are so right! Your childs' welfare is in serious jeopardy!! No, not from the supposed evils of witnessing the natural world as it truly is, but from over-exposure to the unrealistic fantasy world of Disney cartoons such as Dumbo. While cartoons such as Disneys' have a place in childrens' television viewing, so does someting called REALITY. It's OK- take a "powder" in order to relax if you must, and join the rest of us there. Providing that you do your job as a parent, your child will benefit from witnessing both "extremes".
loved the first 2 hours on heart problems - when will the last hour air - central time - houston texas - thanks
I caught a very short part of your program on Tribal Secrets the other day and was wondering why the boy was licking the back side of the cow? I can't think of a good reason to do that
1 only saw a short bit of the Tribal Secrets on the Dinka and would like to see the whole thing. Will it be repeated on your Turkish service ?
I was stunned one morning recently while flipping through the channels to see an elephant calf being eaten alive by lions. I know things like this occur in nature, but I cannot comprehend how a team of National Geographic photographers can just sit there and capture this on film. It is unbelievable cruelty to allow this young animal suffer as it must have. The lions need food and you need a film...so use your gun to mercifully shoot the elephant you bunch of sadistic bastards. No animal deserves to suffer like this little elephant did particularly if a human can do something about it. I am totally disgusted and will never again support anything National Geographic does.
I also saw the "Eaten Alive" program. I have been troubled all week and have had trouble sleeping. I was doing some work on the computer and it was on. I wish I had never seen it. IMO, this program was really sick, worse than pornograohy. The kind of thing that no one wants to see. Where is the good judgement at HG? I am more than disappointed with NGC and will be blocking the channel since I can no longer trust the content that may come into my home for all to see. Color me sick.
Let me see here. Oh, look! NatGeo has a program called "Eaten Alive". Let's see what it's about. Boy, I sure hope I don't see any cute animals being _Eaten Alive_ !!
What is wrong with you folks??! It's called "EATEN ALIVE". In police terms, that's called a CLUE! This kind of thing is a daily occurance all over the world and is in fact, fascinating to see.
The fact _you_ find a program offensive is not reason enough to have it removed. Especially when it is so plainly labled so the content within is obvious to anyone who is even remotely lucid.
BTW, NG I _loved_ the program. Let's have more!
I watched the eaten alive up until after the first break. it was disgusting..i cant understand how this makes 'good' t.v. surely it would it not have been more humain for the producers to shoot the elephant rather than film it for entertainment purposes. I usually watch and enjoy your programmes however this one has played on my mind ever since. I feel sick everytime i think about it and maybe you should put a warning on the programme before it starts! its a baby elephant for christ sake their intelligent animals! It did not deserve to be left like that when people around could have interveened surely its not natural for a film crew to be watching! So you cannot argue its natural! As for MC's comment you wouldnt expect to see a human being eaten alive by a lion, or a domestic dog eating a kitten on tv, so why on mainstream tv should this be allowed!
