Dr Mike Discusses Some of His Friends at DogTown
Porto is a great dog. He was always very energetic and seemed to enjoy his visits to the vet's office. He is very gentle and laid back - ready to except what the world gave him and make the most of it. He did not seem overburdened by his problems.
Bruno was a tough case because you could see a dog wanting to come out of the restrictions his disease gave him, but he could never really do it. Lots of times with a dog like Bruno, I will say their quality of life is not acceptable, but there was something in his eyes that made me want to try a little harder with him. I feel very sad about his case because of this. We could see glimmers of hope, but they never really materialized. It was horrible that he had to go the way he did (with GDV), but it was better than if we prolonged his condition that it did not seem he was going to recover from. I remember when my dog Scruffy tried to play with him (or dominate him - its hard to tell with Scruffy) that it made Bruno mad, but he wasn't able to do anything about it. He did like my old lady Dalmatian named Dottie. Bruno and Dottie would go for little walks together outside in it was nice to see Bruno wag his tail and get a little bit excited. With dogs like Bruno, I am always hoping to get a glimpse of what they would have been like as a young, healthy dog; sadly, it never happened with him.
Zoeyann was very shy and hesitant. She was easy to work with, but she did not warm up to me in the same way Porto had - perhaps it was too many vet visits at such a young age. By the end of the appointment, she was a little friendlier, but was always a little hesitant. I think she liked being with the dogs more than me.
Best Friends/DogTown is an example of what is possible if people who care about something work together to achieve that goal. It is not an endpoint in the animal rights/rescue movement, but a nice stopping point on the way to end the suffering of animals. It is about the individual animal as well and what can be achieved if an animal is just given a chance to thrive and be loved. It is not perfect, and there is more we can do, but we certainly are able to help a lot of animals and can be used as a model for what is possible. It is great because it shows there are other options for many animals and that, although ending the treatment of animals as disposable beings is a long war, there are battles being fought and won that are making it a fight worth fighting.

I cannot wait to watch this series. I have been to Dogtown, and it's an amazing place. You cannot leave without feeling hopeful. Thank You, NGC, for making this series --- the world will be a better place for knowing a place such as Dogtown exists. Thank you, Best Friends, for your never-ending labor of love.
These are amazing stories from Dogtown. I've been to visit Best Friends and I love it. How wonderful that it will have its own show!
Can't wait to watch this! Looking forward to learn how Best Friends handles difficult cases such as aggression.
I can't wait to see this series. I have fostered several dogs from Best Friends. The people there are the best!

I can't wait to see the series. I volunteer and foster for DFW Labrador Retriever Rescue. I have sent the show info to all our volunteers on our group email. We are all programming our Tivo's and dvr's. as I write. Thanks to Best Friends for all that you do. Hopefully I can get to come out and tour the volunteer at Best Friends in the future.
This is amazing and wonderful. These dedicated and knowlegable people are an example of what can be done with animals that are considered unadoptable.
This is what we should be focusing on, saving these animals lives and helping them to get good permanent homes, not banning breeds of dogs, based on the actions of a few dogs. How can we get this information
out to the people who are making laws to ban breeds of dogs based on their breeds? We need this to get out to our legislators, mayors, dog wardens etc., so hopefully they will see the truth about dogs and stop banning our dogs, based on breed.
This is truly a beautiful place. The staff are friendly and care deeply about the animals' well-being. I look forward to this series and episodes on nutrition. I have heard of the miracle stories and the healthy recoveries the dogs have experienced.

I am very excited to see this show. I have a dog that I adopted from Best friends (Jiminy)and he will be watching the show with me.
This Sept. I hope to be able to spend some time in Dogtown (specifically at Jiminy's old place) volunteering.
Congratulations to Best Friends - you've come a long way in a relatively short time. Bless you all for your love of all animals.
God bless these people. I wish there more like them in this world. Can't wait to see the show.
i wish that your 'handlers' would get some training on how to handle stressed out dogs. it's frustrating to watch them continue to grab abd squeak at these dogs who need to be helped to relax first. i always wish i could be there to intercede. i usually just turn the show off. couldn't someone talk to cesar milan maybe? or someone? please
What was Porto's allergy? I have a Chihuahua with a similar issue. We have come to many dead ends regarding the cause of his constant scratching.
I just watched the first show! How wonderful. It was great to Animal (Noble) in the beginning. I keep track of the different ones on the web site at BF. I would love to see more shows, maybe on Guardian Angels, or Cats or farm animals. They do so much for these animals. God Bless them all! And Thank you NG for having this show!

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IS THERE ANYTHING WE CAN DO TO CHANGE THE LAWS TO MAKE IT WHERE THESE COLLAGES CAN NO LONGER USE DOGS AND OTHER ANIMALS TO DO TEST ON THANK YOU SAMMIE
Loved the show. God bless you for the work that you do to better the lives of animals!
I saw your show tonight and it brought tears to my eyes. I just feel so grateful that there are people out there like you. I have two rescued dogs of my own and I swear they watched the whole episode with me, feeling equally as grateful. THANK YOU, and bless you...
The first show has stayed with me all day. For an organization to save them all is a first. For an organization to re-train them all is a first. I am deeply touched by your commitment to the animals who say so much with their tails. This program can only raise awareness even more.
What Best Friends does offers so much hope for so many animals deemed unadoptable that might not be given a second chance. My dream is to have a smaller version of Best Friends' santuary some day and watching the program is so inspiring!
AWESOME and INSPIRING show - thank you NGC and Best Friends - can't wait to see more and learn about your amazing work
Dr. Mike, I saw you on TV working on a hairless big black dog, forgot his name, but I have a simalar case home. I took a rotweilerpup from 51/2 months over from people who refused to continue fighting for his live. As a 3 month old pup he had parvovirus because they went out with a pup who only had 1 booster,I told they not do do that because it's very risky. Was treated at the vet for his virus and got tickfever and from their on it with downhill. His immuumsystem went dangerous low and the result was demodex with infection under the skin. They didn't want to spend no more money on the dog and I took the dog with me and continued with the vet. A lot of injections and antibiotics and prednizon and nothing helped , about $2000 later I dicided to go for a 2e oppinion to a other vet. Same diagnose but different treatment. 1- weekly vermecin injection for the demodex and 6 weeks antibiotic cephalocin 500mg 3 times a day. A little improofment but not to my satisfaction. And then I dicited lets try something natural on top. I live in Aruba and aloe is growing here like wheat. Every other day I cut 3 big leaves, peel them get ride of the yellow and the white meat from the plant I pass thru the mixer and then put it all over his body and after the 2e times I saw already a improofment. He was also diagnosed with allergies and can not eat even the best commercial dogfood. allergic to Fish,Rice,Wheat, potato Yeast, peanuts, trees, crops, grass, ants, molt. So the vet gave me from Purina vetarinarian diet HA. The pure aloe is a big help and he is doing a lot better. In a month from know when his blood % is at 45 i will castrated him that will probally help him to. I just wanted to share this with you because as more Info their is about this treatments for demodex as faster we can help this poor guys.I gave 11 dogs and 7 of them are rescues that I personaly saved and they are all doing great and have a sweet live,so I hope that Jack (the rothie) will become good and have a great live like the rest of my roedel. Dr.if you maybe have a other advice for Jack I would apriciate it.Thank you for your attention and you guys are doing a great job.I hope that the States will get a goverment who forbit PUPPYMILLS. Have a nice day
I would like info on adopting the hound brother who did not find a home-I believe his name is Ruger (?). Thanks.
My wife and I just watched your show. W O W You people are doing some good stuff. We are the proud parents of a rescued Sheppard mix now 14 years old "Sara" and a spoiled little Yorkie "Zoey" now a year and a half old. We are near retireing, About 2 years, And I would love to spend some time with you as a volinter. Please let me know how we may do this. My E-Mail is Hrleemn@aol.com. Thanks Lee
I was very pleased to watch Dogtown on NatGeo Friday night. This program will make a huge impact! It was so well done you would think everyone at Best Friends was an accomplished actor. I am telling everyone I know about it and the fact that I plan to visit Best Friends in the next few months. The work you are doing is awesome!
I watched your show last night for the first time. AMAZING!!! I've been involved with a local animal rescue (bullie buddies of las vegas) for about 6 months now, they are a very small group with limited funds that rescues Pit Bulls. The scale of your operation is amazing, and god bless all of you for the work you do. I do how ever have a question for Dr. Mike. I have a 3 1/2 year old female Pit who is going through her second battle with Immune-Mediated thrombocytopenia in about 8 months. Information is very limited on this disease, and although we caught the problem early this time, I need to know how I can prevent my baby girl from going through this every 6 to 8 months, besides the expense it takes a huge toll on her body. can you please send me information on prevention, I know what the disease is, she also has AIHA as a secondary diagnosis. I wouldn't normally ask a question like this through a blog, however I can't seem to find another way to contact you and I'm running out of options. Thank you
I am trying to get the address for Dogtown in Utah so I can send them a donationa and there is no where on NG site or there site that I can find the address to send them a donation. I think what they are doing is a godsend. And remember dog spelled backward is GOD.
So if anyone at there has the address please send it to me. Carolyn
You can visit Dogtown (part of the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary) at www.bestfriends.org. The run completely off of donations and I'm sure they would appreciate your support. Dogtown also has a specific website at www.bestfriends.org/dogtown

Thanks NatGeo for airing such a wonderful show. I look forward to seeing more shows about Best Friends. This is the best reality show to have come out.God Bless all those who support Best Friends and the welfare of animals.
It's great Dogtown is on TV so even more people can learn the wonderful things that happen at Best Friends. I hope the series continues with visits to the cats, horses, birds, bunnies, and other animals at Best Friends, too!
i think that it is really wonderful that there is more to life knowing that NGC is here to help in any way i love animals and i dislike it when i see people with there animals not treating them with no love or respect, breeding them just to have money, i have LOTS OF LOVE FOR THOSE WHO RESCUE SUCH WONDERFUL CREATURES!!! i really LOVE your show! keep it up thank you
TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO WATCH THE SHOW THIS FRIDAY JANUARY 11TH AT 9PM. THE MORE PEOPLE WHO WATCH, THE MORE LIKELY IT WILL BE THEY WILL MAKE MORE SHOWS.
I loved the show, please do more segments. We need more shows like this to educate people on humane treatment for animals. There is a saying-when we know better-we do better.Kudos NGC!!
My heartfelt admiration goes to Dr. Mike and Elissa, Jeff, Nadine, and everyone else at Best Friends for doing what they could for an old, sick dog like Bruno and all the other animals in their care. Also, thanks to L.A. Animal Services for making it possible for Bruno to get help. Things must have changed since I was a child growing up in L.A. in the fifties and visiting the city shelter was an unforgettably depressing experience.
Thank God for All of those among us who realize how much more fulfilling and complete the human journey is when we share it with our animal friends. I have been an animal lover & pet owner all my life & can't wait to begin watching this show! Thank you NGC!
Those of you who read this really MUST read the books about Best Friends AND visit the sanctuary. It is a spiritual and overwhelming experience to see the sanctuary for yourself. Make plans to stay for a few days and spend time with ALL of the animals, you won't regret it!
Being a dog lover as long as I can remember (I'm 55 now, so figure at least 53 years) I had to watch the show when I saw the first ad. While watching the inital episode I thought of riding my motorcycle to Dogtown from Ohio and volunteering for a month.
I've just watched the second show and still tear up about Bruno.
Dogtown is truely a noble and inspiring effort to help man's best friend and the humans that love them.
My best to you!
On wed the 8th we had to put are beloved pug down he was only 6 are family was devestated we miss him so much he seemed to have the same problem Bruno was having so this show was very special, God Bless the staff and all those who have made a contribution to dogtown !!!
I cry everytime I watch is show I wish I was there and I wish there was a place like this in every state at least, there are so many animals in need I am an animal lover,
Wow!! Just watched the show and I'm so impressed with the work you're doing at Dogtown! In a world so overwhelmed with homeless animals and filled with such sad animal stories, you are a breath of fresh air. I hope this show is a huge success and reaches millions. Education and awareness is the key. If circumstances permitted, I'd hop on a plane tomorrow and dedicate my life to volunteering at your wonderful facility. My two rescues and I will be watching and praying for all the wonderful people, and most of all the animals, at Dogtown- Best Friends! God Bless you all!!
Have watched both shows and am so thrilled that "Best Friends" is getting out their message on National Geographic Channel--hope there will be shows on the wonderful work they do with cats, horses, birds, and all animals really!! Have volunteered at "Best Friends" and can recommend no better vacation spot and rejuvenation for the spirit!!
How can I donate to Dog Town?
I have the coolest Boxer who is 5 years old. He has a medium case of Hip Dysplasia. It is getting worse lately, he is getting to the point of not being able to stand up and even has a tough time laying down.
I have been giving him a bi-monthy shot of Adequan for about a year now. He is also getting a healthy/safe regiment of glucosamine and Rymadil.
What can I do?
Can DogTown help my boxer, Apollo?
Who funds Dogtown!! what a wonderful place, I love the show and I am amazed.. all these wonderful people caring for all these beautiful animals..
wonderful show thank you N.G. i love the idea that there are people out there that love animals as much as i do keep up the great work
DogTown is funded by the generous donations of its ever-growing membership.
It's easy to help DogTown continue rescuing and spay/neutering the puppies on the Native American reservation - just copy/paste below:

I watched DogTown and was so touched by what I saw that I immediately wanted to move there to help. Is there a direct website for DogTown? Your work is so wonderful! Our good wishes for continued success isn't enough. May the Grandfathers watch over you and keep you safe and give you many days with blue skies and good health. May he continue to bless the animals with a path to you.
WHERE CAN A DONATION BE SENT?
Hi Mike!
I am beyond thrilled to know that you are out there in Utah, doing such great things for our favorite 4-legged friends. Good for you! And congratulations on your success with this program so far. I can only imagine how rewarding it must be to turn your passion into your profession.
My husband, Ben, and I have a rescued dog and there's never been a better pet, as far as we're concerned!
Best wishes to you.
I am so happy to be able to watch such honorable rescue organization like Best Friends on TV!! Thank you National Geographic!! Shows like that are so important for the welfare of our fur friends. I will be watching Dogtonwn every week.
We honeymooned at Best Friends 7 years ago and return each year on our anniversary. What an amazing place! If you are planning a vacation to the National Parks, make sure you plan a day or several days to visit/volunteer at this most amazing animal sanctaury. I hope NG does more episodes on different part of Best Friends.
poor Bruno touched my heart. I have a chow that looks a lot like Bruno. When poor Bruno passed I cried, but I saw that sweet man that overtakes the graves and delivers the prayers I cried again. His love towards these little creatures is amazing. I retold what this sweet man has said and others have cried too. God bless these people.
Thank you Dr Mike Discusses and all the staff at Best Friends! It is so wonderful what is being done there... gives me hope for man kinds future.
Also would like to thank NetGeo for making this three part series. It is my hope they will not be the last.
Dr. Mike,
I just finished watching the episode about Bruno. I was sobbing & my heart breaking as I sat with my dogs and watched the program.
Best Friends is wonderful and all of you are too. What a great program and I love the compassion you all have for the dogs.
If I ever get out that way I definitely want to stop by.
Many Blessings to all of you.
I just watched your show for the first time, and I just want to say God Bless you beautiful people!!! It was the episode with a dog named Bruno, and let me tell you, I cried so hard as I watched it with my 3 dogs. It is so nice to know there are caring people out there like you. A thousand thank yous for all the animals you save!!!!
P.S. where can donations be sent?
I love watching your shows and although I don't live close enough to vist Dogtown, I watch with an open heart and wet eyes with every new show. Your staff gives so much of themselves, and what your orginization does, is simply amazing!
You, your animals, the staff, doctors, and the work you do is such a blessing!! I hope the show brings an added awareness to the needs of animals all over the world. God Bless You!
Donations to continue the spay/neuter project on the Navajo Nation - where the puppy was pulled from the tire pile - can be made here:

Tonight was the first time I had seen DogTown having just learned of it from an email from Best Friends. Having been a long time member of Best Friends, I was very anxious to view the program. It was positively awesome and touching; I loved it. What a fabulous crew of people they have working there at DogTown and Best Friends Sanctuary. I truly admire and respect them. I wish all of the human race could be that loving and kind (wishing thinking). Thank you so much for airing this program.
Donations can be sent to Best Friends Animal Society 5001 Angel Canyon Road Kanab UT 84741 or you can visit www.bestfriends.org/dogtown to donate online.
On the January 18th episode I saw that the caregiver gave a raw diet. Where can I find that size package? I can not find it in NC anymore? I have 8 elderly resuces and they would greatly benifit from that type of diet. One of my dogs (11 yrs)has pancreatitis and he is on prozyme but do you have any other suggestions to help him?
Thank You for doing wonderful things at dogtown!
I've watched all 3 shows. What a wonderful show. I notice that it's not on for at least the next 2 weeks. When will this show be on again?
Thank you,
Julie
Dogtown is a wonderful show. Dr. Mike is a great vet. You can really tell that he is really giving his all to help these dogs and give them the best treatment. It's great how he never gives up on finding out what is the root to the dog's medical problem. Thomas who handles the aggressive dogs kudo's to you. It takes a special person to handle these special dogs and you can tell the dogs really respect and love him.
Your show is beyond words. Your Dogtown is beyond words, but more than that God Bless all of you who are vets there, technichians, trainers, anyone who works there. You are all a gift from God helping the helpless and NEVER giving up. There is a place in heaven for all of you and the beautiful dogs you have helped. I generally tape DogTown, and watch it a few times since I am so impressed and it has given me more insight on the power of love and giving to poor unfortunate animals. Thank you for all you have done to help them. I'm not sure if this is the place to ask a question, but I can't seem to get an answer from anyone. I have a female Bichon Frise and I would like to share our home with another, should I get another female, or male?
I worked at Best Friends for three and a half years, and worked with all the wonderful people there. It was the best experiance ever and i loved working in the clinic with Dr. Mike.It great to be able to see them on TV finally getting the exposure they finally deserve
TO ANYBODY AT DOGTOWN: I am in a situation and need avice asap. I did not see a "contact us" phone number so I am trying this route. My son, Mike, rescued a puppy about a year ago during a terrible thunderstorm. She is mostly pitt bull and very sweet. She was either abused or hit by a car and dropped off and should not have lived through the night. Mike and his college friends pulled their money together and took her to a vet. They were informed the dog probably would not make it. The next day, Mike went to see her at the vet and decided to adopt her. After several months of recovery, Dakota did fine. However, Dakota is now in need of surgery. She has torn the tendons in her right back leg and was informed the other leg will probably tear also. She is not two years of age yet. Mike did get two opinions and concluded surgery needs to be performed. The problem is, money. My question is, does your organization perform surgeries for rescued dogs that have been adopted? If not, do you have any referrals? The vets we researched all want $2,500 for only one leg. My son saved this dog and says he is willing to go into debt if need be. He's says there is no alternative. Do you know of any place we can go that will be cheaper then this amount? I realize I am probably barking up a wrong tree, but she is to go in for surgery next week if we can't find an alternative. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Mike and Dakota live in Lubbock Texas and is going to have surgery in Dallas next week. Her recovery, they say, will be one year and during that time will be confined to a kennel. Does this sound right? Your help or referrals will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Michelle

I hope dogtown is back on tv soon it is the animal program that I have watched in years. I hope to see your work with tlc continue. If i lived closer i would love to help even if it means cleaning the kennels. I thank god for Dogtown hope to see you back on TV. Sincerely, Brenda Lloyd
I saw dogtown and that is somewhere I would love to live and work. That would be my lifelong dream. How would I contact them??
I so love the show and what you do for the animals. do you have a program where someone could stay and volunteer? I would take vaction to come there. I told my husband I want to move to Dogtown. What skills must one have to get a job there? I have been an animal lover all my life and always had rescue dogs as a child. I now have shelties and several cats. If I could I would have 100's of acres and do this myself. Thanks for all you do.
I hope NG continues to film more shows and makes Dogtown a regular series. The message that is sent by this amazing organization is one that needs to be heard on national TV -often! No other group does what they do. The effort that they put into Hurrican Katrina relief and the number of animals that they saved is far and above the efforts of anyone else who was there. I know this because two of my children were there working with them. They never stop in their efforts to help where needed. They went to Lebanon to help the dogs caught in the war there, saved puppy mill dogs and just recently took responsibility for many of the abused Vick dogs.
Every single day Best Friends exemplifies the very best in human nature. Please continue to show the world what we need to do and what we SHOULD do for the animals we live with on this planet.
God Bless NG and Best Friends Animal Society.
I love this show! I can't wait for it to come back on! How can you see about adopting some of these dogs? I am so happy that Dogtown exists. There needs to be more compassionate people like the staff at Dogtown in the world. Thanks, Dogtown.
Where is the show!!!!!
God Bless Dogtown and all of its employee's for the work they do saving dogs
It warms my heart to see such generosity and compassion
Your show is great!!! I love it, I saw the episode with Bruno on it, the chow mix that didnt make it =( I cried my eyes off... I fell in love with that dog in a second, I can't imagine why someone would neglect such a sweet creature. I know, by now nothing should amaze me;people do horrible things to these poor defenseless animals, but thank God for you guys. People like you inspire people like me to wanna help, and most important you inspire hope....
I saw your show for the first time last night. I love the work you are doing and intend to watch the show regularly.
I am still crying after watching Bruno put to sleep.
Bless you for the work you are doing.
i have spent over $5:0000 on my 7yr. old pit bull for skin allergies i dont know what to do nothing works i am now just trying to keep her comfortable with over the counter things i am at my wits end financially i saw an episode where someone brought you a dog with the same problems you checked the limphnodes to see if it was a type of cancer please help zena my dog from new york

Dear Dr. Mike , i watched your show tonight and i loved it. i too have a dog with allergies. she is a 9yr. old chichua that has been battleing ear allergies for awhile . we have been from vet to vet and each tells us its a yeast allergy, three said it was her food we changed that but it got worst. she take allergy shots that last for a short while and then they fare back up . if there is another solution to her ear allergies please give me some advice .i hate seeing her holding her head down and rubbing her head on the floor. if there is a solution i would be so grateful. i wish there were more places in this world like dogtown that really do care about animals.
I had read about the show in People Magazine and I put it on my favorites to tape when it started and I am so.. glad I did. I absolutely love it. I adopted my dog Pepper from an animal shelter and it is the BEST thing I have ever done. He is the love of my life. Thanks for bringing this show to us. It makes me feel so good everytime I watch it and to see that I'm not alone in the love that I have for animals. Thanks, Teri Cochran
Dr. Mike,
I too was touched by Bruno the chow. I recently experienced the same trauma with my chow; same neurological problems , same cause of death. This was probably one of the most difficult times in my life. He has been gone for 3 months and I will always miss him terribly. I was so sad that Bruno did not survive as well. thank you for making his final days precious and loving. you and your staff are angels
