what i think is funny is the fear that is being pushed on everybody. i have studied meteorology and natural geography in college and it was pointed out global warming is a naturally happening phenomenon and that there is relatively little we can do to stop it. not only that, but if the ice caps melted there would not be such a dramatic increase in water level as it has been pressed upon us, only a few inches or so. the temperatures are not going to dramatically increase that much either, what will happen is that the weather will be more stable, meaning that there will be cooler summers and warmer winters. another overlooked fact is that the most active "greenhouse" gas just happens to be the most abundant substance on the earth, dihydrogen oxide. yes hydroflourocarbons do do some damage but they are in such low number that they are not nearly as damaging as water vapor. does not mean we can trash the planet but people need to stop this doom and gloom environmentalism and just open their eyes and see what is happening is just part of earth's NATURAL life cycle. Deal with it, and live your lives.

I feel that the first three individuals who commented are sadly ignorant, and misinformed in this matter. First off hydroflourocarbons are not the largest issue; it is clouroflourocarbons (CFC's) that break the bonds in ozone (O3) molecules, which are so very necessary for life as we know it to exist. This ozone layer blocks extremely high frequency electromagnetic rays that would literally cook you alive, from reaching the surface of the earth. Yes, it is true that the sea level may only rise 5 or 6 meters (roughly 16-20 feet), however that is not the only factor that will drastically alter the planets climate. I don't believe that the sea level will rise nearly as high as some have predicted, nor I believe that humans will even approach endangerment; however it is my opinion that if there is not a global effort to reduce the level of CFC and carbon dioxyde emissions then mankind, weather it be in this century or the next, will have to face the extreme consequences put forth by this planets reaction to the actions of a destructive previous generation.

Don't claim to be anyone with special degrees in the earth's sciences, yet something is happening here and all of us should be conscience of it. Oil dependancy is rediculous, we need alternative fuels, and fuels that don't cause harm to our atmosphere. Unfotunately, our government and big industry are one in the same and since those are the people that line the pockets of big politics, we may never see real change in our life time. Our foolish use of our forests, why on earth can we pass laws that say no more smoking in public places, yet we can't say start using electronic billing and/or bill pay. My guess here is we would save billions in wasteful use of trees that we depend so much on for our existance. I happen to work for an automobile manufacture, why do we insist on trimming the american worker becuase their the problem with big business profit? My guess, if you sell vehicles that were "green", more of the American public would buy your vehicles and you wouldn't have to worry about your bottom line as much or trimming factory workers who make your profits and buy your vehicles. Green vehicles more than likely save our planet the loss of ozone depletion more than any other harmful product made? It's really time regardless of whether Al Gore is right or wrong to wake up and have proactive polititions who will forget how many dollars they can get from fund raiser after fund raiser and working on our childrens future.

Based on our history of bipartisanship & procrastination as well as emerging industrialization of huge nations it's probably too late already. Already there are many plant and animal species that your children will never see. Some island nations are on the verge of submersion. Weather patterns and ocean currents are critical and at very real risk of catastrophic failure and humanity (importantly the bright and educated) just aren't getting it.

At first I was sceptical about global warming until I visited a glacier that I had visited 15 years earlier in Alaska. I was amazed to see that it was almost gone. You don't have to be an expert to see that this kind of melting is not normal. The glacier that I visited was hundreds of thousands of years old and it's almost gone. There has to be some consequences for this kind of melting and the fact that people are chosing to ignore it, is just part of human arrogance and denial of the facts. And it is really sad, because that's why nothing significant will be done until it's to late !!!

Does no one watch what's happening in the Arctic or in Siberia? Permafrost, by definition, stays frozen all the time. Sadly, the permafrost in the Arctic is thawing out and in the process releasing CO2 and methane. the extra GHG's then provoke more melting of permafrost in the following year. Truely i can't believe how stupid some people could be. I really believe that if this is going to happen then only god wants that put like god says we men and women are not perfect and like humens we don't know what is expected untill we really see when he comes. Another thing is that truely i think that when the time comes no one is going to believe it because we have been playing with this idea and its just stupid.

the thing is that people are forgetting one thing about global warming, well yeah it is a naturally occurring thing but we are causing most of it with all of our burning of fossil fuels. the one thing people forget is The Greenhouse Effect where all of the carbon dioxide that comes from burning fossil fuels goes up in to the atmosphere and stays there and keeps all of the heat from the sunlight inside the atmosphere and gradually heating the world up, this is also a naturally occurring event like global warming, but we are contributing to this which will probably help speed up global warming. the greenhouse effect is a good thing it keeps the world warm and at a constant temperature so that the Earth does not freeze over. what i think is that this will probably be the future but i probably wont live to see the day. and when the arctic and antarctic ice caps melt they will not cause the ocean levels to rise drastically but they will rise about 10-15 feet. i was reading the comments above and i saw something about the ozone layer and i was amazed that people did not know that the ozone layer has nothing to do with global warming, the ozone layer is just part of the atmosphere that filters out UV rays like UV-B, UV-A, and UV-C and has nothing to do with the global temperature to rise.

You people just dont get the big picture do ya? They show this to inform and possibly prevent, not for entertainment! If your scared, than you should stop contributing to what you fear! Its not the oil companys digging the oil, Its the consumers buying and using the oil! There are many other ways to get energy (and EASIER ways as well) I'll use a metafore:

Lets say Someone is handing out money (oil companys) another person takes it (Us) and spends it on something (using the fossil fuels), but every time you spend the money, you get a hole in your pocket(Global Warming). I think that these programs tend to over-exaggerate the situation, but if they didn't, maybe people would take even less effort to "go green" than we already have. Yes, global climate changes happened in the past and they are happening again now. We can, tho, alleviate and slow down the situation by taking steps to be more environmentally conscious now.

The show proposed a scenerio where urban settings would need to adapt to nomadic survival. Aside from theories on global warming, such a strategy certainly is logical and wise in light of disasters such as Katrina.

Many publications, including Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming (and Environmentalism) and Unstoppable Global Warming Every 1,500 Years, show that humans have no affect at all on the climate. I have been taping broadcast programs so that in about five years when The Lie has been exposed I can rub the envirowhacko's noses in the dreck they have been spewing.

Environmental science publications are full of facts that mankind does not have any impact on global climate change and that the earth has warmed and cooled cyclically for millions of years. Even the History International channel broadcast this. The following excerpts are from the 2/8/08 broadcast.

"Little Ice Age, Big Chill"

"...[C]ataclysmic cold that began just seven centuries ago, a period now known as The Little Ice Age [ca. 1300-1850]. ...Millions perish as the cold triggers a deadly chain reaction across civilizations. ...Its effects were much less pronounced than the last major ice age that ended about 10,000 years ago when 30% of the earth was covered by ice. Still, its impact in many parts of the world was devastating. The Little Ice Age cooling was as much as -2 to -3 degrees centigrade less than the average temperature today. ...This was a modest change compared to the things we see in the geological record, but we know from historical accounts that it didn't take much to disrupt society. ...It was a year (1653) when New York harbor froze for 5 weeks allowing people to walk from Manhattan to Staten Island. When Eskimos sailed their kayaks as far south as Scotland. And when two feet of snow fell on New England in June and July during a season so cold it was remembered in both America and Europe as the year without a summer. ...The natural forces that caused The Little Ice Age are a mystery. Climatologists are determined to unravel it because they believe it was not an isolated event but part of a recurring cycle. [Emphasis added.] The Little Ice Age may be a chilling blueprint of our future. ...For all our technological power, we can't control the climate. [Emphasis added.]

From ca. 400-1400...[O]ne of civilization's greatest surges of prosperity...population boom. During the Medieval warm period Europe's peasants swelled from 40 to 60 million. Populations also soared in Russia, China and North America, and agriculture expanded north to regions once too frigid for farming. ...As the warm climate embraced Europe its inventive and optimistic population embarked on an unparalleled building spree - ...Westminster Abbey, The Leaning Tower of Pisa and the magnificent gothic cathedrals still held in awe today. ...Prosperity and optimism, however, were defined differently in the 13th Century than they are today. Even in times of wonderful weather, even in times of prosperity the Medieval farmer, the Medieval peasant lived on the edge of doom. The average age is probably around 35. Or 36. The level of infant mortality is appalling...probably one in every two dies before the age of one. So, what we are talking about here is a very harsh world. Any change in the weather can be catastrophic. ...Near the dawn of the 14th century an unseasonable chill began to descend on the warm world of the Middle Ages. With brutal swiftness over the course of only a decade, the average global temperature dropped to a level some four degrees colder than today. ...From Norway to New Zealand glaciers began their rapid advance, growing more widespread than at any time in the previous 10,000 years. In England the Thames froze frequently. ...The Little Ice Age was to be an age not only of cooler temperatures, but also of more frequent and intense storminess [resulting in crop failures]. Between 1371 and 1791 111 famines devastated France alone. In 1601 one famine in Russia killed over 500,000 people.

Today, 700 years after the Little Ice Age began, climatologists are still debating what natural processes triggered it. ...There is no clear consensus and no lack of theories. I believe the basic cause of the Little Ice Age was that we were getting less radiation from the sun at that time...some scientists believe that the sun my be only part of the answer. Another piece of the puzzle may be much closer to home. Scientists have discovered intriguing evidence from cores drilled in the perpetual ice packs of Greenland and Antarctica. Preserved in the ice is a record of climate dating back 115,000 years. Sulfur cores deposited in the ice cores indicate that during the Little Ice Age there was an average of five major volcanic eruptions each century. Each of the eruptions had the explosive power of Krakatoa in 1883. Today, such powerful eruptions occur only rarely. A volcanic eruption puts out particles and puts out gases into the atmosphere. The main gases they put out are water vapor and carbon dioxide which mix with the atmosphere, but it is the sulfur gases which cause the climate to change. If the eruption is strong enough it will have a plume that goes all the way up into the stratosphere, and these react with water vapor to form a cloud sulfuric acid droplets, a thin, hazy cloud that is in the stratosphere. It can stay there for several years, and this cloud reflects sunlight back to space and cools the earth's surface. Less sunlight gets to the surface.

Some scientists believe that the cause of the Little Ice Age had less to do with hot gas high in earth's atmosphere and more with cold water deep in its oceans. Their theory focuses on a phenomenon called the thermal haline circulation or oceanic conveyor belt. The conveyor is a powerful flow of warm water that transports heat to northern latitudes. The Gulf Stream is just part of this massive global loop. In essence the way that it works is that surface waters of the ocean get warm in the tropics because there is a lot of sunlight there. Those waters flow - they are conveyed - north about to the latitude of, say, Iceland. That's where they are losing a lot of heat to the atmosphere, so heat's being sucked out of the water. The conveyor's momentum continues as the cooling water grows dense and sinks. It then flows south to maintain balance with the warm water flowing north at the surface. Some scientists believe that the Little Ice Age occurred when natural forces disrupted the enormous flow. They theorize the catalyst was a flood of fresh water from Arctic ice that melted during the Medieval warm period. The reason why people believe that the edition of freshwater can kill the conveyor is because you are basically messing with the salinity part of that equation. By adding lots of freshwater, you're making the surface water less dense, and so no matter how cold you get them they can't sink. And if they can't sink, it stops the conveyor. If the conveyor stops, the affect on the earth's climate, especially in Europe, could be enormous. Heat would no longer be transported to the atmosphere above the North Atlantic, and the prevailing eastward winds over the ocean would blow cold instead of warm air over the continent. Little Ice Age temperatures would abruptly engulf Europe.

While scientists remain uncertain which natural forces triggered the Little Ice Age, they believe they know what caused the coldest seven decades within the Little Ice Age's 500 year span. Between 1645 and 1715, near the midpoint of the Little Ice Age, frigid temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere dipped by an additional three degrees Fahrenheit. Climatologists traced the cause to the sun, which they believe was weakened by a phenomenon known today as the Monder Minimum. The Minimum there refers to a minimum in the number of sun spots on the face of the sun, and when there are less [sic] sun spots on the face of the sun, the sun is sending out less radiation and the earth is getting less radiation. So, we're getting less radiation, that can cause a global cooling period.

[A]round 1850 the Little Ice Age came to an abrupt end. The dramatic shift occurred over the course of perhaps only a decade. Scientists disagree about what natural force was responsible. In the same way that the Little Ice Age was probably fundamentally caused by a reduction in the amount of radiation that the earth gets from the sun, when it ended in the late 19th century that occurred when the sun started putting out more energy. The end of the Little Ice Age was caused by fewer volcanic eruptions during that period, but also industrialization and anthropogenic pollution caused by greenhouse gases. The end of the Little Ice Age, I think, was caused by the same thing that brought the previous ten cycles to an end - that it's a natural fluctuation, and I think it's the ocean. Some scientists believe that the oceanic conveyor, the powerful flow that transports heat to northern latitudes, oscillates in strength. They theorize that the most recent weak cycle of the conveyor caused the Little Ice Age and that the most current strong cycle still continuing today brought it to an end.

3,200 years ago temperatures dropped 9 degrees Fahrenheit for about a century. The abrupt cooling was minor compared to the last major Ice Age 15,000 years ago but more severe than the Little Ice Age. ...As they [scientists] look to the future, the only certainty is that nothing is certain. We don't know whether we're going into a hyper warming situation for the North Atlantic or a regional cooling period. There is that much uncertainty in the models."

The sun goes through 100-year cycles and within those cycles 11-year sun spot cycles. The earth goes through natural cycles of heating and cooling, and there is no evidence that mankind can in any way change our climate. Scientists have measured warming on Mars, and so far as I know there are no SUV's there.

ATTENTION: REALITY CHECK

Pay close attention, thus I will provide vital information regarding psychological behavior and the impact on human beings triggering their reasons to believe Global Warming “as they secretly hope” is not real.
It is all a combination of hope and denial; along with fear and uncertainty of their descendant’s well being.
It is a sad reality that in the last 100 years, we pumped enough CO2 in the atmosphere to change its composition, and we continue to release billions of metric tons of CO2.
Not much can be undone or changed by a single human, or even a few million human beings. We are talking industries, commodities and human pampering comforts, traveling/transportation, even nutritional changes as everything is so industrialized and massive produced.
There is little we can do about it, but ignoring it, or forming part of the group of incredulous individuals is implausibly ignorant; rather irrational and irresponsible.
Shortly after the start of the industrial revolution, there were virtually no worries of climate change triggered by the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide started to be measured by scientist groups in the late 1950’s. It is clearly evident that global warming is real.
Cyclical warming and cooling of the earth is normal, but abrupt and sudden changes in the climate have never been experienced by this earth unless caused by super volcanoes or asteroid impacts on our planet’s surface.
I will point out a few facts highlighted in Algore’s film, Nova Science, Discovery Channel, National Geographic, NASA disclosures, and United States Meteorology and Oceanography Institutions. Not to mention the UK, which has advanced a great deal and has spent lots of resources creating super computers to predict global patterns.

-Global Warming will melt the polar ice caps and sea levels will rise several feet within
this century; transforming the way we live on this planet and leaving hundreds of
millions without shelter.
-Climate changes will relocate precipitation causing floods and droughts in different
locations disrupting agriculture, way of life; as well as having a huge economic impact
in many countries including the United States.
-With warmer sea waters, hurricanes and tropical disturbances will be more frequent and
of much higher intensity. Stronger winds, more water content, and much stronger eye
walls.
Hurricanes will reach further North; as tidal waves in combination with rising sea
levels will breach into main cities causing flood and bringing them to a screeching
halt.
Climate refugees will affect the economy.
-The analysis of deep ice, proves that the earth never had this much CO2 in its
atmosphere; as far as we can go back and measure, 650,000 years.
Measuring Isotopes, has proven that every time there is a higher concentration of
CO2 in the atmosphere, the average global temperatures rises.
There have been ice ages and warming periods, taking place over thousands or
millions of years; giving enough time for the earth’s ecosystems and landscapes to
adapt. This time it’s different. The fossil fuels we’re burning was the same CO2 that
Earth cleaned up from its atmosphere from the fossilized remains of dead plants and
animals; by exposure to heat and pressure in the Earth's crust over hundreds of
millions of years we get an array of elements in the periodic table that can be
transformed in what we call now fossil fuels.
NO HUMAN BEING WAS ABLE TO BURN FOSSIL FUELS AT THIS RATE
EVER. IT WAS UNKNOWN, UNHEARD OF, USELESS, AND UNABLE TO BE
PROCESSED, LET ALONE BE USED AS ENERGY.
THE LAST 100 YEARS PEOPLE.. AWAKE UP!!

-The melting of glaciers like the Himalayas, will leave millions without fresh water supply.
-Melting ice can release too much fresh water into the dense saltier waters, disrupting the ocean conveyor (ocean currents and its patterns) creating completely different weather patterns and even stopping the ocean conveyor in its entirety. CAUSING THE NEXT ICE AGE. Sooner than we think.
These are all facts; to prevent chaos and massive public fear, government
agencies attempt keeping this kind of information at margin.
-Warming and sea level rise are expected to continue even if greenhouse gas levels are stabilized. The delay in reaching equilibrium is a result of the large heat capacity of the oceans.

From a psychological point of view, many people have chosen to ignore and continue their daily lives. As Algore makes his point “AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH”.

Do you think that truth is convenient to think about?
Of coarse not.. That’s an intense reality that its best not to think about it and just hope it corrects it self.
Don’t your kids go to school every day and think what they want be when they grow up.
Isn’t it better to just think or hope it isn’t real.

Of course in all theories, there must be a minority of scientists who will argue an opposing position. If our democracy is to work properly, however, policies must be based on the findings of the majority.

When I look at the lay people here who believe that humans are not causing climate change, I cannot help but think of the comparision:

LAY PEOPLE WHO DISAGREE:
- probably generally don't have scientific training or background and don't check each and every one of their assumptions rigorously
- have only read or listened to other opinions ...never done research on their own
- have probably spent less than 1,000 man hours of direct laboratory research on the subject

vs.

SCIENTISTS WHO AGREE THERE'S A REAL PROBLEM:
- scientist with decades of training in science
- have done methodical, careful research, analyszing assumptions, constructing careful experiments, testing hypothesis
- have probably spent decades...10,000 to 20,000 hours of objective research on these questions

well, hmmm...I wonder who I'm going to trust?

Catie, you are like many of the billions of poor who also want a car just as badly as you!...It's their inalienable right! Wow! MATTB - you said that it's a hoax; watch the film "the great global warming swindle" and "stay curious". Well, I took your advice and became curious. In 1 minute, my curiousity led me to find this on Wikipedia:

From your open minded advice, I managed to find something to shed questionable light on the film that was suppose to support your thesis. Since you are open minded, however, I know you will now realize your mistaken view, right?

MARTIN - So Martin, I will consider you seriously if you can explain your hypothesis to me in detail and disprove current scientific theory, point by point showing how your theory is more viable than thousands of research scientists. Please do the research and post here...otherwise, don't say something you can't really back up.

RUSS - you are pleading so nicely with National Geographic! Have you seen all their other programs? Do you find them to be worthy? They are pretty high quality, aren't they? If so, doesn't it seem quite strange that the hundreds of staff here (quite intelligent people, really! I mean...look at all the extraordinary programs they have brought you in the past!) spent millions to produce this? Do you think that they just happened to have a moment of total group insanity? Yes, that's VERY plausible, isn't it!
Now THAT would be another plausible theory you could champion!

KEVIN - Hey Kev, can you stop being a comedian and just devote 10 years of your life being a scientist and doing "real" research to prove your point instead of throwing out a few numbers...armchair research ...then I can take you seriously, OK? And you gotta update your database! It's not just your SUV! That's a small part of it..Go read some real and current research papers instead of magazines. Go to the local university and study the research papers yourself. OK? There's lot of scientists there too! You can conduct your own personal poll to see how many on campus support which theory! BLANCA - You have a lot of spelling mistakes; "truely" is actually spelled "truly" and "humen" is actually spelled "human". Your grammar is also incorrect. To convey your point, you must use better English.
You say "people are stupid". Well, we all carry ignorance with us in life, don't we? It's one of the inescapable qualities of being alive. In the Merriam Webster dictionary, "stupid" is defined as:lacking ordinary keenness and quickness of mind. We're all like that sometimes, aren't we?

J LARRY - You seem to have done more armchair research here than everyone in the list above. If you have made that much effort gathering your video evidence, then, gee, why don't you just become a scientist and enter the proper forum for challenging the status quo? We are, after all, after truth, aren't we? Do it! Put your money where your mouth is! Instead of making your point to lay people, go and challenge the thousands of scientist in a formal, objective scientific debate! Then we can really see if your points are valid or not! Or you could just email any relevant research scientist on any university campus. They're quite accessible, you know? They are scientists, after all and are after "truth", unlike a lot of lay people who already have their truth and try to find facts to support it and throw away facts that don't.

So in summary, all of you above, you aren't scientists. If you disbelieve what the majority of reasonable scientists tell you, you should offer point by point evidence showing your model is better and email a REAL scientist to present your case! They will be more than happy to educate you!

Sometimes, you need to look at the Indigenous people of the world; some of the legendary cultural beliefs are based on non- written European ideas. The legend of Red Elk and others describe what maybe or can be, NOT what will be!
