Apparently this is coming off talking about the SLC Straight Edge loons that killed somebody and would try to bomb McDonalds' and animal labs, but the narrator is talking about how vegan Straight Edge is the peaceful version of Straight Edge and its presence refutes the violent image? Ian, if you're the real deal, I am also confused as to why they'd have excluded you.

It's possible they were aware of certain comments distancing yourself from straight edge as a community/movement?

(I'm going to take the road less traveled and assume you actually are who you say you are. I'd feel horrible if I accused Ian Mackaye of lying and found out it's really him. Haha)

My point is that Vegan Straight Edge isn't some new offshoot that's dedicating itself to living peacefully to give Straight Edge a better name; it existed before (not only before, but alongside kids like the ones shown, only then the peaceful kids weren't getting any airtime) and was militant and violent and done in the name of Vegan Straight Edge. They obviously had just talked about it, yet they have the narrator introduce these kids with "It's called Vegan Straight Edge", like it's a new offshoot instead of just the different extreme.

That's something at least.

Oh goddamnit! I already get shit on for being vegan straight-edge, but now I can't wait for the ammount of shit I get now after this for being a "dumpster diving hippie anarchist squatter" When I was in highschool kids much much much smaller then me would come make fun of me and like try to intimidate me because they always said "straight-edge kids don't fight! haha" It's shit like this where they get that from. I hope the whole thing doesn't come off as either your hippie dumpster diver or a militant murder machine. Dude, how is it so fucking hard to accuratly portray us in the media. I had much hope about this documentary, but I don't know after seeing those 2 clips. Where do they find these people seriously? I mean no offense and I haven't seen the whole story about those guys, but for the most part dumpster-divers eat anything from meat to dairy to eggs and alot are called "freegans", so if this is the case they have no right being associated with vegans.

to xmikex - I went to the site you said had an upcoming doc on straight edge - but it looks like a film done by straight edgers. Isn't that a little conflict of interest? Its not really a documentary then - just a film. Might be a good one, but will be completely one-sided. Mormans make a lot of documentaries about their religion...

I lived in salt lake county and not every one is vegan straight edge or militant its a fw tuff guy who think they need to prove a point. I just finished watching the documentary and they did a good job showing both sides and proving were not a bunch of hooligans that run amuk but a family and stand by one another we may not be blood or know eachother but we are bound through straight edge

dumpster diving is stupid

this documentary was so focused on the militant side of sxe. it is such a shame because there are thousands of amazing sxe kids that are active in the community, environmentally conscious, and pacifists. i am not sxe, but i have many good friends who are. we accept each other's lifestyles. the thought of it being considered a gang is ridiculous, and from where i'm from it is deffinitely not the case (not even by law enforcement). i'm saddened by the lack of balanced reporting on the part of nat geo; as a long time member i expected more.

QUESTION... I embraced the sxe lifestyle pretty much through the last half of the 90s through about '01. I fell through my own cracks and started drinking with some buddies. And over the course of the next 4-5 years, I became an incomprehensible stoner, a heroine addict, crack smoker, (briefly...) heavy drinker and cigarette smoker. This is more of a question than a comment, I guess, but I have been thinking really hard about my younger life, and my life over the last few years, and I was a lot happier when I was claiming the name STRAIGHT EDGE..
I had a purpose, and I was ok being clean and happy... So I guess my question is.. would it be way to hypocritical of me to clean up and call myself STRAIGHT EDGE again? I have always been into the music, and such, and I AM a former, so I wouldn't think it would be a bad thing to want to clean up my act and claim my place back in the group... would it????
