sXe: Reflections on both sides of my life
Jeremy Nelson
Police Officer
Straight Edge just kind of found me. I was not looking for it. I grew up in a semi-poor family, unlike a lot of typical Straight Edger's. My mother worked long days, at multiple jobs, to buy the necessities of life. She was a good mother who loved her kids. My father was a drug addict alcoholic who frequented the local jail. I don't have a lot of memories of my father sober. It seems that every story I have starts out with, "This one time when my dad was drunk!" So at a young age, I made the conscious decision to never do drugs and alcohol. The very thought of becoming my father was fear enough to keep me away from them.
But, it was also my father that pointed me towards Straight Edge. He was an avid music fan who often made me listen to different obscure bands. This one time when he was drunk, he made me listen to Circle Jerks and Butthole Surfers records while he rambled on about the songs and what each one meant. This was my introduction into punk music. I liked the music, but I didn't like what a lot of the bands stood for or talked about in their lyrics. It seemed like most punk bands were drunks and addicts, and the lyrics reflected that. It wasn't until I heard "Straight Edge" music that I really started liking the music. It seemed like the bands were writing songs about my life. Songs that I could relate to on a personal level. The bands were so intense and passionate about the messages they were conveying that I was hooked with my first concert; Chain of Strength at the Speedway Café.
The music was what keep me out of trouble, and what got me into trouble. My associating with the music led me to join Straight Edge Crews and the Crews led me to problems with the law. But, it also kept me away from drugs and alcohol. I always wanted to be a Police Officer and that kept me from taking a path in life that several of my friends took. However, my association with Straight Edge kept me from becoming a Police Officer for awhile as well. I was turned down by several Police Departments because of my Straight Edge past. One Department actually hired me and fired me within a week when it found out about my Straight Edge past. I pushed on and eventually landed a job. It's kind of funny to think that the same Police Departments that would not hire me because of my Straight Edge past now pay me to come teach their Officer's about Straight Edge.
Becoming a Police Officer also took its toll on my friendships. Straight Edger's that were like brothers to me would not even talk to me after I got hired as a Police Officer. Some acted as if I was a traitor, while other acted as if I was using them for information on other Straight Edger's. It also works both ways. I have Police Officer's that think that I am trying to infiltrate the Police Department for Straight Edge. Every time I teach a class, someone will call the Police Chief and let him know that I am still Straight Edge and probably trying to get more Straight Edger to become cops so I can create my own Straight Edge army. It's kind of funny and it's kind of frustrating.
There are lots and lots of other stories that I could share with you, but the bottom line is that Straight Edge helped and hindered me in my life. But, I would never change a thing. I keep my Straight Edge tattoos as reminders of a time in my life that I do not want to forget. Like the tattoo on my back says," Life. Love. Regret."

I know what that's like I have straight edge tattooed on my forearm and I have many tattoos of straight edge my mom was a drug addict and abused alcohol I vowed to never be like that because she was never around and hurt our family, I never got into the straight edge crews because I knew of the consequences if I had joined them. I can barely wear a shirt that says straight edge without getting hassled by police officers, but I live for being drug free and clean I teach my brothers and sisters to stay clear of the temptations of drugs and alcohol, mostly because I've had so many loved ones and close friends die of drug overdoses and alcohol related collisions.

Pretty much every time the mainstream media pays attention to Straight Edge it's to focus on the few within the Straight Edge community who cause trouble and not on the thousands of us who live peaceful, positive lifestyles. If you don't know what I'm talking about, look on youtube for the video of Geraldo Rivera unnecessarily/unfairly harping on Karl Beuchner of Straight Edge band EARTH CRISIS. Hopefully, this National Geographic documentary will focus on how positive a movement Straight Edge has been for the vast majority of us involved with it.
This is the DUMBEST club I’ve ever heard of. If you personally don’t want to participate with drugs or alcohol then don’t, but don’t form a militant group to hurt the people who do. Or hurt the ones who are selling it, law enforcement exist for a reason. This world doesn’t need a group of testosterone soaked immature boys offending people that are trying to get by or enjoy their lives the way they choose. We live in America and have the right to choose what we want, whether its a bad or good choice. This reminds me of another club called the Nazi's, these people hurt Jews, blacks, mentally challenged…etc. All because they didn’t participate in what they believed to be "the right thing to do." This is sick & sad. For the people who don’t go bashing in peoples faces for having a good time more power to you. Live your life without forcing your beliefs otherwise you’ll be just like idiots causing pain to others, but you’ll be doing it verbally rather than physically.

Daniel, Your comment is completly ignorant. Straight Edge is not bout being in a "group", straight edge is self commitment to no drugs. You dont turn edge to become more popular and start a crew to announce we are different.
i am just confused. i guess i am just old and i remember that straight edge kids were just good kids into punk rock and hardcore. this is just crazy and i am confused.

you people are so retarded.
I also I agree with Joseph. It is not a club it is a self vow and commitment to stay away from drugs and alcohol. And for your information not all edge people turn to violence to show their commitment to the group or their belief. Next time really pay attention to the show and do more research before you bash on straight edge people.
dumpster diving is stupid
GOD DAMMIT I DONT KNOW WHAT FUCKING CHANNEL THIS IS ON THIS WEBSITE SUCKS FAT COCK
Apparently, Daniel has missed the entire point of straight edge, as most people have. But it's fine, I hope he's seen the documentary now and had some light shed on straight edge. Straight edge is not a movement, it is quite simply a way of life. We have no religious, political, or otherwise agenda. It's not a club, gang, crew, or party. Just a lifestyle...pretty simple really.
I was very interested to see an interview with a straight edge police officer. Having just finished the police academy and having been straight edge the last 5 years of my life, it's not very often you find people like this. I have also experienced negative reactions from friends, since it's such an "un-pink" thing to do. I don't think I've ever used the term straight edge to describe my non-use of drugs or alcohol in background investigations for police departments, and in my area, I really don't think they would know what it meant. Only in places where police have had problems with violent people who present themselves as straight edge, such as in Reno or Las Vegas, do police departments seem to have any notion of what straight edge means.
On a side note, I heard the singer of Chain of Strength went on to be a police officer as well.
Jus sayin'

To megan smith: You are on the national geographic channel website- what channel do you think its on? wow, you really need to relax - stay off the coffee
this was a god show except for people like (Daniel)saying all of us are millitant and destructive because we are not all like that. there is way more positive (posi) than negative things about sXe.
if she could worry about her drinking and drugs and not say stuff about us that would be great.
Xstraight edgeX for life
good job joseph i agree with u and daniel is wrong
Daniel, you need to learn to listen. The narrator said numerous times that the millitant straight-edge groups only make up a small percentage of the overall straight-edge population. Straight-edge isn't a "club" it is a personal choice. People don't claim Edge to be part of a group. Straight-edge kids don't walk around beating up drug dealers. The violence involved in a straight-edge kid's life would still exist even if straight-edge didn't. All of the violent situations that I have been involved with had nothing to do with my claim of straight-edge, they were over friendship. Personally, I have the biggest problem with fake people, kids that claim edge but it isn't in their hearts. Kids who claim edge and then break it are more proned to being attacked than a drug dealer.
true til death

The First thing people need to relize is most Hxc kids and straight edge kids are in crews.Im not straight edge but i was in a crew. The philosphy is mess with one mess with us all.the crew thing used to be about going to shows and show brotherhood.now its about picking on metal kids? and why cause they dance diffrent?so what...and then you have the militant straight edge kids who mess with other HxC kids cause there smoking? and the vegans? being militant cause we eat meat? I belive in America where we are free do as you wish as long as its bound to the law.......ya know what was funny the dude last night wearing a ramallah shirt last night but he was straight edge...lol love ya white trash dirty rob...peace im out
First off, how do you talk about the Reno scene without mention of 7 Seconds? Oh, wait... you're only focusing on the straight edge scene as being gang related and don't care to look into the history of the positive aspects. Even looking into the "gang" related parts of the scene you've totally missed the boat as well. You give tons of credit to FSU yet fail to mention the Boston Wolfpack from the early '80's and bands like SSD, DYS, Negative F/X etc.
And what's with Thurston Moore narrating? How about any of the other folks actually involved in the early sxe scene? Not just someone involved in punk. Might as well have had Jimmy Gestapo narrate. But his name's probably lost on you.
This was horrible. Thanks for making straight edge look like a gang. Get your facts straight before you put your own lable on all of these kids.
I wasn't going to get into this discussion but I wanted to address the guy who said, in a comment above me, that most hardcore and straight edge kids are in crews.
That is simply untrue. That may be the case in your area, but I've been across the country and visited hardcore scenes in small towns and major cities and can honestly say that the percentage of hardcore or punk kids involved in crews or worse, gangs, is pretty low. It's simply non-existent in many scenes and in others it's closer to 5% or 10% of the over all population at best. Again, it may be that your part of the country has more crews, or more people in crews, but over all I just don't feel that's accurate.
My thoughts in general on the documentary...
The thing to keep in mind, and the thing that this documentary sadly choose to ignore in favor of sensationalism, is that the sort of kids predisposed to join a gang will make any social interst they have into a gang activity. If a kid likes baseball, he or she's going to form or join a baseball gang, if a kid like knitting, she or she's going to join or form a knitting gang. Those are ridiculous examples but the point is that it's the kid, not the lifestyle.
Suggesting that straight edge, which is as much a personal code of ethics, or a discipline to live by, is a gang is both short sighted and reckless. I'm 35, I've been straight edge just shy of 20 years and I can't even remember the last time I got into a fight.
It's a shame you chose to devote the majority of the program you created to portraying straight edge this way.
its a lifestyle not a gang
Daniel:
So you're fine with the drug dealers standing on the corner selling their junk to kids, ruining lives, breaking up homes? That's neat. You sound like one of the great humanitarians. Also, excellent comparison to the Nazis; they wanted to get rid of an entire people and we want to get drugs and alcohol out of our neighborhoods. Brilliant.
people have the right to belive in what they want its their life style if people want to live that way let them why do people care its their life.
This documentary and the kids in it make straight edge look ridiculous. I realize that this might be "good news" and boost ratings, but I would have expected something a little less one sided and more current. This was sensationalism at its finest.
Nat Geo fell short big time on this one.
However, what can I expect? I would have preferred to watch a set by The First Step instead. (Or Insted)
Although I do live by what straight edge stands for, i don't consider myself straight edge. I don't listen to that type of music or hangout with traditional straight edge kids, nothing against them, i just like death metal along with my other straight edge like friends. It is a great concept that i fully support, but it is sad how a few fanatics can ruin any good cause.
this show only scratched the surface of hardcore. yeah... edge was created in washington but what bout all the bands that are not straight edge that have contributed so much to the scene? Bryan from DBD, white trash Rob from ramallah, a whole bunch of kats from FSU. Sworn enemy, Death Threat, blood 4 blood. I dont believe NGC did enough research. yea straight edge is a big part of hardcore but there are many more aspects to it than that. Like standing up for yourself and your friends, and not taking b/s from bullies Im not edge, but i respect it and i still believe in what is was created for... in the words of scott vogel
"Its about friendship, honesty, commitment
and searching and looking for justice
in this messed up world.
Its about living your life for yourself, and no one else.
Be yourself, and be happy.
screw everybody that tells you whats right and whats wrong.
Look in your heart." This is what hardcore is and im sure a lot of people will beg to differ but thats what is and nothing more. Its bout finding yourself and finding friends and family where you had none. I honestly believe that NGC could have covered the other aspects of hardcore. The scene that i come from is of CO-EXISTANCE. Straight edge or not. Its bout the music and the principles. Next time, NGC should do a little more home work b4 you belittle our kind with your stupid media b/s. You totally blew this out of proportion... oh yeah not mention all the hypocrisies that were coming out of those kids mouths. this show was a JOKE. NGC knows nothing and neither does John Q public bout the real world of hardcore

The sheer misunderstanding of this culture is astounding. I never realized how far this could go. i understand you selling out to the man pissing of some SXE dudes though. also if law enforcement did their jobs and kept drug dealers off the streets and stuff there wouldn't be the violence. Also how was syracuse over looked. i mean i guess it's not really a big deal anymore, but there is Earth Crisis. the most well known sxe band around.
don't get me wrong, i get into a tussle no and then, and maybe once it was becuase i was edge. also don't quote Vogel. he is a douche bag.
dude this bout NGC's misinterpretation of our lifes not bout personal grudges. I dont care what you think of vogel but dude seriously c'mon your trying to tell me that that is not what hardcore is bout?
Funny...I'm 33 and still EDGE as I was when I was 21...I wanted to be a cop my whole life but failed numerous cop interviews when they found out I had "STRAIGHT EDGE" tattooed on my arm. I was told it reflects gang activity. I was also told that having the beliefs of Straight Edge would only make it difficult for me to be a cop, since (according to them)...I would not be able to be objective being I saw all who drank and did drugs as ,what they call "sub-human" But I don't feel that way...even my boss today constantly busts my balls about my poison free lifestyle... truth is Stright Edge is for ME and ME only...I have planty of friends and family who smoke and drink...I also have co-workers who are vocal about being pot heads...do I still talk to them? YES...Am I still nice to them? YES...I figure that's their choice...it's just not mine. My choice is drug free...My choice is STRAIGHTEDGE. XXX
To mikey ive been all over to shows also and i can tell ya if you are new to the scene the crews or other HxC kids hate mosh on you try to fight you,and up in NY and Boston, PA, all around up there ya have FSU,BFL, acting as bouncers or tough guys, ever since Boston Beatdown has the hardcore scene changed with everyone trying to be so militant. just look on myspace at pictures of SxE and hardcore kids holding guns bats and so fourth trying to look all bad ass and tough guys.Hardcore is about unity hardcore is about the music.not how tough you are how good you dance..or how tight your jeans are how how cool your bullet belt looks turned sideways.Belive what ever you want to belive if your straight edge, vegan holligan, skinhead, punk whatever....preach it through ya music...caue music is more powerful then a fist or a bat. im out peaxc
The best part of the whole gang mentality was that they actually stated that there has only been 1 death contributed to the "SXE gang" I love how they had nothing current, only stuff that happened in the 90's.
woops, I didn't mean to use the word contributed above
straight edge for life
life love regret
I LOVE YOU AND UNBROKEN
and this hating on straight edge has to stop
the is the biggest load of crap ive heard EVER
im 18 years old and on my 6th year of straight edge
call it a "gang" call it a "crew" call it whatever but were here now
and have been for ovr 20 years
and belive me
YOUR not going to be the ones to stop us....
I remember the group at my high school that was straight edge, and I was always a little confused by them as I still am now... if someone wants to make a commitment to not drink or use drugs, then why not just leave it at that- a personal commitment to oneself? Why all of the drama of the tattoos and the cliques and the "noone understands us..." There are a lot of people who choose to be healthy and who don't drink or do drugs- myself included. I guess I just don't understand why it needs to be announced to the world. I am going to try to watch the show though because it seems like I'm missing here...
I am the mother of a 23yr. old young man who has been straight edge since he was 14.I couldnt be more proud of his dedication to living a positive lifestyle. How he chooses to showcase his passion (with tatoos) is as far as im concerned admirable. The truth is I have only seen positive things come from this lifestyle, and again, could not be more proud!

I remember back in the day bands like Youth of Today were starting to get into the militant thing and all of the Krishna crap they would preach. We ran them out of NE PA!
daniel..are you that naive
drugs are against the law, right?
Well, bottom line, people who break the law live out side the law. Cops are lenient with drugs, and there ARE loop holes within the law. There are no loop holes in a fist. You are right though, people do have the right to choose. Some choose to stand up for what they believe in, and some don't.
i think its allright, all that sxe kids are about. buy im not because i belive in MY OWN philosophy of life, not giving it a name or a label, such as an X tattooed shallowly on my skin but deep on my brain and thoughts, a conviction that borns from within and not from influence from out and not also looking, acting, doing what a crew of other kids do. the cool thing is that they all have the same ideals and stuff, at least by the moment, because this way of life and the label of calling theirselves sXe has become a fashion these days, what creates a bad perception of all the sxe people. i wouldnt like to be stereotyped or people to say im violent because i call myself straight edge. thats why i dont call myself a straight edge anymore, still i have those values plus others and i dont see through a lens so delimited and that maybe wouldnt let me enjoy and experencie more of this life.
straight edge is for fags
straight edge is for fags
It was a pretty good doc. for mainstream t.v., it covered the posi kids, the crew kids, the young naive kids... I've been sXe for 12 years now, seen kids come and go. The bottom line is, you gotta do it for yourself. If you do it to impress others, you are gonna find who your true friends are in the long run.
I second what Steve said about Thurston Moore narrating... what an odd choice! Jimmy Gestapo narrating would've been even more outlandish "QUEST FOR HERB!" Also what he said about the older Boston crews from the mid to late 80's... and last time I was in the NE area, not all FSU kids were/are sXe?!
As far as sXe being a gang - REAL gangs, KILL each other over stupid things like "territory". The most you hear about sXe kids getting into fights or beatdowns, usually ends in broken egos. This is my opinion
u suck
u suck butt
You know what they say TRUE TILL DEATH....
Oh for your friends STRAIGHT EDGE IS NOT A GANG
As Jeremys dad I read this article knowing some background about the subject of my son and his involvement with the straight edge movement.
There are some items of this story I would like to comment on.
First of all I am very proud of my son, and the accomplishments he's made in his life. Also I guess I should be greateful that I can always , at least, be used as a bad example. Because I was not a good person, back then.
However, I want to state that despite all of my faults, and there were many, I always had a full time job. Not quite the dead beat this article makes me out to be. And I provided as much to my family as I could. Yes, even as much, as his 'long suffering' Mother, if not more, finacially at least. Yes, I was an alcoholic, and "frequented the local jails," and later prisons. My recreational alcohol use led me to become an abuser. That created a lot of problems in my, and my family's, lives.
But that has all changed. As a result of a head injury, and treatment for psychological problems realated to it. I was diagnosed with ADD, and a bipolar disorder. I take medication for these and I have made a great improvements in my life. It is my belief that I had some of these illness before my brain injury, and I was self medicting with alchohol. I am sober for a few years now. And my life is so much better. Though I can't change my past. I can choose not to live that way today. I hope I have a better relationship with my children because of this. If Jeremy chose SXE because he didn't want to be like me, he made the right choice. I wouldn't of wanted him to be like me. He has also made me proud that he overcame the violent aspects of it, and has become a really good police officer.
Again, I am very proud of him.
If anyone chooses to become straight edge, do so for the right reasons. Stay straight, No Drugs, No Alcohol. Don't be caught up in the gang mentality of violence. True Sraight edge is non violent!
Live Free!

only in this country people get crap from the police and the main-stream media from making a choice of being drug-free.
