Stonehenge (finally) Decoded
On Sunday, June 1, the National Geographic Channel will be premiering Stonehenge Decoded. National Geographic Channel takes you on an archeology roller coaster ride to derive what it's mystical purpose was, how it was built in a time of lesser technology, and what it meant to people that built it. Below are a number of links that can help you explore this topic along side the channel.
Preview clips from the show ahead of the premiere.
If video isn't your thing, we have photos too!
Head straight to the Salisbury Plain for the closest look to the temple, aside from being right there.
Play the offical Stonhenge Decoded game - guaranteed brain teasers that frustrate even the smartest person.
Spinal Tap's Nigel Tufnel has his own theory of who built the temple.....

Depictions and models of Stonehenge typically show it as a completed circle. According to what I've read, the stones needed to complete the circle, or the monument for that matter, cannot be found at the site or in the neighborhood roundabout. Does National Geographic have archaeological information that indicates Stonehenge was in fact completed as shown?
My understanding the site is ceremonial in nature, timed with celestial events.
Loved the article in June's NatGeo and watched "Stonehenge Decoded" tonight with continued fascination. While new theories have been launched and are on their way to answered, I must ask a few questions which now gnaw at me: What were the course and volume of the River Avon in 2500bce? Were the avenues between sites ever flooded (to either facilitate building or move the population between sites)? Were the site ditches ever flooded? What was the area's microclimate from the earliest settlments and how did that affect the population? What are the acoustic properties of Stonehenge and its surrounding monuments? Are there echoes related to form(as with Chichen Itza)? Do the upright stones themselves have tonal qualities(related to their form as finely or roughly manipulated and thereby "tuned")? How does Stonehenge, Silbury Hill, the Sanctuary, Woodhenge, West Kennet Long Barrow et al relate temporally?Acoustically? I'm pretty clear on bronze age barrows and henges in general, but remain quite curious to discover more. While I've poured through Aubrey Burl's volumes, innumerable others, and everything by National Georgraphic on the subject, I'd greatly appreciate any further information.
In moving the stones, the show depicts them doing it during warm weather. Since the culture was agricultural and warm days would mean working in the fields to grow food to survive, why not move the stones on sleds during the winter months when the people had time on their hands and the ground was frozen and covered in a white lubricant called snow???? Ice covered rivers would be perfect highways, as well.
I was disappointed in the program, and found it long-winded and highly speculative in its conclusions, guaranteed to make truly professional archaeologists blush with shame. In particular, there was no mention of the earlier phases of stonehenge prior to to the erection of the sarcens; surely these are vital to understanding its purpose. One thing I'd particularly like to know...were the bluestones taken from an existing stone circle in the Prescelli Mountains rather than quarried? This might explain their unique value to the stonehenge-builders.
According to Zecharia Sitchin brilliant archeologist & researcher who has written 7 books on the history of the Anunnaki
(those who from heaven to earth came) states that the stonehenge layout was a very complex astro-nomical device which tracked celestial bodies
in exact & precise ways much too sophisticated for
the stone age people that
lived at that time. The Anunnaki were highly advanced visitors from the 12th planet of our solar system IBURU which has a 3,600 yr. orbit. Sitchin's translations of the many thousands of clay tablets (using cuneiform writing of Sumerians) showed they had a very great knowledge of our solar system. Sitchen
for example, was able to describe in detail the planets Uranus & Neptune
ACCURATELY using data from
the clay tablets written
millennia ago! His descrip-
tion was verified by Voyagers fly-bys!- proving
the veracity of the facts as descibed on the thousand
s of year old clay tablets.
When George Smith (in 1876)first discovered this huge massive library the first
stories he found were the story of Noah's Ark, then the Tower of Babel etc etc so it was apparent these were the original stories which became the much shortened version we now call the Bible. In fact, the stunning, sudden fact of the appearence of Homo Sapiens is explained in the Sumerian texts by one scientist (Enki) who used genetic engineering to combine the genes of the primitive "ape men" with the genes of the Anunnaki to create Adam in their "image & likeness" This was in Africa. Again the sudden explosion of civilization in Sumeria was due to these
"gods" teaching the people
mathematics, language, writing. agriculture, etc
etc. There is ample evidence of their activ-ities. Of course they were the ones to build the great pyramid which was a
powerful navigational aid
for the interplanetary rockets they used.
They originally came to mine gold to use as a shield around their planet to protect the atmosphere,
Evidence of very ancient gold mines exists in Africa. They also mined tons of gold & tin (for use in bronze) at Lake Titicaca in Peru where huge deposits existed.
Mitochondrial DNA shows that the first "EVE" was
traced back to Africa which matches the location where Adam & Eve were created according to the
Sumerian writings.
Other astonishing truths are brought out in Sitchin's many books.

I was fascinated by the program and couldn't help but notice when they showed Stonehenge at the conclusion of the program, I noticed the connection of the 2 upright stones with one laid across on top, and of the 2 wooden pillars with the bodies laid to rest on top of the pillars. Whether there is any real connection I don't know, but it sure brings alot to the imagination.
It's rubbish to say that people from the stonehenge era were incapable of conceiving and building stonehenge; on the evolutionary time scale they were intellectually our equals. Even though they didn't have all the advantages of our modern sophisticated technology, they had people smart enough to figure out how to design and build this monument using what was available to them at the time. Forget extra-terrestrials; however much you'd like to believe it, ET hasn't yet visited earth, except perhaps as primitive life forms riding on meteorities.
National Geographic normally provides high quality programming, but I thought that they really droped the ball on this one. Stonehenge Decoded was speculative beyond belief. I couldn't get over how many theories were presented as fact, when there was absolutely no evidence to back them up. There were also several places where the program contradicted itself. I have to say that I found this program to be very disappointing.
So Woodhenge is a Temple of Life and Stonehenge is a Temple of Death? No evidence to offer. Real scientific. You might as well dig up the UFO and Atlantis theories. What about Merlin?
A responsible scientist sticks to the most likely explanations. Such as: Woodhenge was a practice piece. You don't move those stones until you know where you're putting them.
Was that "archaeologist" using National Geographic to sell his book and pimp his career? I see nothing else of merit in this.
